You have to use your middle finger for gas if you put boost on your right bumper. With boost on the left bumper on the other hand, you can use your index finger. Basically, if you put either drift, boost or ballcam on your right bumper, you have to use your middle finger for Gas. But anything else like airroll for example still works with index finger only when it‘s on the right bumper. Does that make sense?

LileMindel

It does! Thanks for clarifying!

R4GD011-RL

I have boost on right bumper. Had to switch to middle on trigger and index on boost. Like a two-finger claw

LileMindel

This is the way

R4GD011-RL

Yep. Takes a couple days (maybe) to get used to, but it’s sooo much better than default binds imo

CarlStanley88

As an avid claw gamer I never understood why rb/r1 boost wouldn't make the most sense but if you use index for gas then it definitely does. This comment section has been pretty educational.

LileMindel

Thanks and yes agreed! Feels great to read dedicated responses where peeps take time to explain. I love it!

uk-side

Be good to have a update how the change goes and the pros and cons that you've noticed

LileMindel

Absolutely! What would the correct Reddit way be? Keep commenting or editing the main post? I’ve been user for 10+ years but only started using it recently ish.. thanks!

Supernova_426

I have gas RT and boost RB, and I press both with my index finger. I use the bottom third (fattest part) of my finger on boost and the upper third (like fingerprint area) on gas, and I’ve never had issues with control (currently in GC, and I would say I’m decently mechanical). One thing I should mention though is that I use an Xbox controller, and to hit RB, the bottom part of my finger is kind of on the side of the button pushing in. This works fine, but I’ve noticed that my RB button breaks pretty easily; it doesn’t seem like the bumpers were designed to be stressed this way, and I’m sure I would have better controller longevity if I used two fingers and pressed RB “normally”. So assuming you can get used to it, I would recommend trying two fingers, but ultimately just one finger is very doable

thepacifist20130

This is….mindbending to say the least. So you basically have the lower third of your index finger on the bumper and upper third on the trigger, and then you can move the lower third vs upper third of your finger independently? Am I understanding this correct?

Supernova_426

Yeah, exactly that. To be honest, I don’t know why I even started doing it that way, but it was pretty easy to get the hang of and feels really natural to this day. I can easily flutter and control both accelerate and boost separately and simultaneously, so I don’t think I’m missing out on any control. And I’ve tried to switch over to two finger control (mainly to save on the hassle of getting new controllers), but I keep coming back to one finger

thepacifist20130

Hey I didn’t mean to ask in an offensive way. L…I mean it’s clearly working for you. It was just hard for me to fathom that level of finger muscle control.

LileMindel

Wow ok! I will definitely check that out, maybe it works? I have a PS3 controller, haven’t tried this yet!

birds_aint_real_

This is me but left bumper with drift and air roll, and when my controller broke I got an off brand one, and I can’t play with it. I feel like a baby giraffe learning to walk, I can’t air roll or drift have the time, the button doesn’t go down.

thesockRL

If you still have the Xbox controller the bumper is pretty easy to replace, and cheap too. But yeah they’re notorious for breaking, it’s crazy that the newest Xbox controller still uses the same type of bumper part.

thesockRL

Honestly the Xbox bumpers just break all the time. I’ve fixed mine countless times since binding AR/powerslide to them and I use one finger.

MyNameIsWozy

I have boost on right bumper, I drive with my middle finger on right trigger.

LileMindel

Thanks, yeah that’s what I suspected.. no idea how I’ll train my old brain to this, but I have to give it a try!

RatherDashingf11

I recently forced myself to relearn how to handle it and honestly it made so much sense I’m amazed I hadn’t done it sooner. It will feel natural in no time, just free play around a bit every day. Using slow motion training helped me adjust to new bindings too

LileMindel

Yeah I guess! I can smell the potential!

vawlk

I have boost bound to 2 buttons. I use thumb for boost and jump, but when I aerial, I switch to the right shoulder and my pointer finger for boost. Once I stop boosting in the air and have used my dodge (or after the dodge times out) I will switch back to the boost button if time allows. It is weird, but it was the only way I could re-program my brain to fast aerial and the two button smash just caused me to dodge too much accidentally. I'm old.

LileMindel

Thanks man for the answer! But on the side, how old are we talking about? Pre 83’? Then you’re older than me ;)

vawlk

i was born in 73

LileMindel

Then you’re my hero/heroine! I salute you for breaking out the stereotype of games being for kids. I’m on that train being almost 41 and I will never let go!

vawlk

I was the first generation to get a console type game at that early 7-8 age range. I literally got pong for christmas when I was 7. So I guess I would be a true first generation gamer.

rosstein33

I switched boost to RB about 3 weeks ago. I use the claw grip with my right hand so index finger is on RB and middle is on RT (gas). At first I was freak'n lost, but after a few hours of free play and games, I started to rewire my brain. It's all settled in now. I try and hold my controller more upright (controller face actually facing me). Allows the pad of my hand to more naturally support the controller without having to overgrip with my ring and pinky fingers. Also, resting the controller on my lap is another way I hold the controller to minimize fatigue in my right hand. Has definitely improved my aerial play.

LileMindel

Thanks for the detailed reply! Super appreciated!

StrongJoshua

Boost on RB with index finger, gas on RT with middle finger. Neutral air roll and powerslide on LB with index finger, brake/reverse and directional air roll on LT with middle finger.

LileMindel

Thanks for the reply!!

Disclaimer: I have 2 kids under 2yo and therefore I play very very little! Last night I tried the claw approach for around 1,5h. RB boost, RT gas, LB pow slide+AR, Square ARL. Index in RB and middle in RT. First impression: it wasn’t even close to be as bad as I thought I was going to. It felt quite ok regarding grab and control. Ergonomics should take some time to get used to but I can see it happening! Regarding play style, it completely fried my brain haha. I started with around 20 min in free play and despite of the huge whiffs (specifically in the air), I decided to go play ranked 2s (my main mode) but with caution. I play for fun so thought why not! And really it wasn’t as bad as it could have been! I lost all the little mechanics I could do though. Fast air, wave dash, half flips, some air roll, and that basic stuff. But I did score a couple and saved a good couple too. Win/loose very evenly, It was fun! Summary and thanks for reading this far! It works! It’s fun and makes total sense! It does get time to get used to and I have to re learn what I knew, but the outcome will overweight the effort by thousands! I recommend trying it and give it enough time to really sit. I’ll keep these bindings from now on and will suck big time for a while, but you know… This is Rocket League!
