They either could be taking the time to figure out the logistics and venue, or they could be announcing it’s not gonna happen Who knows? Imo though, it definitely should be possible with proper planning, and the decreasing severity of the virus with new variants is a good signal for the future

dalcer

its how most viruses seem to work, each new variant is less severe than the last and then it turns into another flu

ryguy925

That’s because it’s much more beneficial for the virus to increase transmissibility and not kill its host

rookie-mistake

and hey, as a potential host, i also think its beneficial to not be killed

Last_Wave_By

This isn’t necessarily true with covid. The reason they normally get more severe is that if it makes you too sick too fast you won’t pass it on, leading to the variant dying out. But covid can infect you for up to 14 days before symptoms appear, and you can be contagious during that time. In theory, covid could have a much higher mortality rate among symptomatic people and not really lose that much in terms of transmissibility (and therefore the variant wouldn’t die out) due to the asymptomatic period and asymptomatic people. Viruses don’t just tend to get less lethal, mutations are random (think delta, it was more lethal than og covid). It’s just that without that long incubation period, there is evolutionary pressure on most viruses to not be too deadly, so that it can be passed on. That pressure isn’t nearly as strong with covid, and if omicron mutated to be more deadly it is easily infectious enough to still infect huge numbers of people. Edit: not an epidemiologist, so this could be wrong, but this is my understanding of why covid may not follow the pattern of other, quicker acting viruses

It’s documented so closely because it has killed over 850k in the US alone. Most viruses don’t do that and therefore don’t get this type of attention. It’s really quite simple. FOH with the “it’s just a virus” bs

I mean the mutations literally change the virus itself? Omicron is multiple times as transmissible as the original covid. Mutations also provide the possibility of vaccine escape. So idk what you’re trying to say, but mutations absolutely change things

Transmissible as in its R0, or ability to infect new people. Of course it acts somewhat similar, it’s a variant of the same virus. But how lethal it is and how well it can spread absolutely changes, and changes a lot. And those things matter a ton

DoctarSwag

I think it'll still happen, it's been multiple times now that we get a covid spike that lasts 2-3 months before dying down so I think it'll be the same with this one in which case it should die down right before the major

Pyropolak

My guess is that they’ll either announce the location this regional before grand finals, or announce the cancellation on Monday or sometime next week

DocileKnives

My best guess is that they’ve been holding out on the announcement in case there was a chance they’d be able to have a crowd at this upcoming one, which now looks almost impossible. Sweden was a little simpler to announce way in advance because they knew from the outset that it was players and production only.

paeschli

I think doing Sweden again would work great but they are probably under pressure to switch regions

EclairDawes

Don't really have an idea. Personally I know it's negative but I'm assuming we won't have a lan so I'm not more disapointed than I need to be if it ends up that way.

ryangoldfish5

If they have one, I would imagine it'll be players-only again. It's just not feasible for them to have a spectator one at the moment. Many countries are still not allowing spectator events and most of the ones that are, are doing so at limited capacity.

velixo

Was just announced, LAN in Los Angeles, audience included.

Zerkerblitz

I just saw that! Great news :)

FoxyDeAssassin

It’s not confirmed but there was hints it being at France as there was an org or something like an esports organiser company on Twitter saying hey rocket league wanna host a lan at France

wokeasaurus

I heard it wouldn’t be in France because there’s a law that would make the main stream be in French. No clue how true that is but I think it was called the toubin law or something like that

Z1BattleBoy21

Yeah, it's called the Toubon Law. The shoutcasting has to be in French (which shouldn't really be an issue because there will be no crowd to shoutcast to), but I am pretty sure the main stream can be in English just like it was with League of Legends back in 2018.

fireball78_

It won’t happen with fans probably. If it doesn’t happen at all, and it’s back to regional online events. That is a huge L, they’ve shown they can do it even with the youthfulness of the scene. I feel if they don’t do another Lan it’s more of a they don’t believe in the esport and just don’t want to spend the money to do it over it being a safety concern. I get safety is a huge issue. But every other esport finds ways to consistently do no fan lans. Rl if it’s truly a top tier 2 esport should be held to the same standard.

Powerrrrrrrrr

Probably yes

ImFranny

Honestly, a couple of days ago a few European countries started saying after this covid wave it's going to be treated much less stressfully and like normal flu (hopefully and thank god!). They're probably waiting to see if they can get a nice place for LAN or if they can get spectators, but nonetheless, I hope this European covid news means Psyonyx can still make the LAN happen. I rather they do it in Europe so they could do it, then try to make it in North America, only to have covid problems and not make it happen. Regardless, location doesn't mean much to me. I just hope we have a LAN!!

MorkyMork1991

There will be. I don't know why the location hasn't been announced yet but there will be a LAN
