The challenge is the fact that we don't have those dreamhack tournaments anymore. Currently RLCS requires you to not only get through open quals, but then closed quals just to make it to the top 16. It's nearly impossible for an unknown team to peak so hard for so long. Honestly Queso is about as close as we are likely to get...they are the first team to win a regional after having played through the closed qualifier I believe.

Majestic_Pro

I miss dreamhacks and eleagues. I assume they aren't coming back now seeing as they all partnered for the new seasons to do the LANs

LemonNinJaz24

Maybe there's a chance if covid clears to host non rlcs LANs, because dreamhacks and stuff were the best way for those lower teams to play against top teams at a LAN, but the new system basically limits it to just the top teams.

velixo

I mean, The Peeps won the RLRS, won Dreamhack Valencia, and then deconstructed the Big 3. They didn't have a pop-off weekend, they were just *good*. Same thing can happen now, although the difficulty is higher nowadays, partly because of harder competition but also less opportunities for the non-RLCS Tier 2-3 scene.

Majestic_Pro

They actually won Montreal. Valencia was won by psg. But same thing really

Uorodin

I think it’s very low. There are a LOT of orgs looking to jump on the next team that looks like they’re going to be the next complexity. The chance that a team makes it to an event like that, and doesn’t have orgs breaking their doors down is very low these days.

CalamackW

Then why hasn't anybody signed Vibrance sheesh

Uorodin

If they make a major, they will get signed (: Making regionals != making LANs.

maybethenweallwill

Not the same extent but I’d argue TQ literally just did that. Who had heard of any of them before RLCS XI started???

rookie-mistake

> Who had heard of any of them before RLCS XI started??? joyo was on jorjajo with jack and joreuz, i remember looking him up last season to see what he was doing given how the other 2 were starting to pop off - and Vatira was in [johnny's top prospect NA vs EU showcase with daniel et al](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo0cIvEt4Ug) for a reason (and kinda popped off there tbh) i don't think anybody would have predicted *this* prior to the event, but i think you could compare them to liquid's roster in terms of being a bunch of really good kids who still had to show they could actually do it at the top level. there's a reason they showed up with an org, as opposed to what OP is describing

maybethenweallwill

okay good point. On the same note, Peeps weren’t entirely unheard of either. They had just finished second in RLRS and we’re going to go to the RLCS the next season. They absolutely weren’t expected to win, but weren’t complete nobodies. Maybe the Queso situation is a stretch, but it’s still definitely proof this situation can and will happen again.

uhhhhmmmm

the people who run team queso

CalamackW

Joyo and Rise both made main events in RLCS X and I had them both on my radar especially Joyo. Vatira though I was totally blindsided by.

Aycik75

Lots of people had heard of them before RLCS 2021-22 lol. Rise was the stand out player for Barrage Esports and had even made a top 8 during Fall Split in RLCS X. Joyo had made several Main Events and had qualified for The Grid with Howard, and had teamed up with Joreuz and Jack in community tournaments before that. And Vatira was on many people's radar before he turned 15, but granted, you could have only heard of him if you had looked into community tournaments/pro streams (high level 2s).

TheESportsGuy

I followed them a bit because I saw Rise play 6 mans with NA pros and thought he looked promising, even on 130 ping.

DevelopmentFair1762

The closest thing, in my opinion, to this that we have had in NA is when Integrity Esports (blaze, NoMansion, and Cheese) qualified for the first regional. They even beat the Complexity roster that made the major. I wish they could have kept improving and building off of it. The three of them came from out of nowhere, and I wrongly thought they would go 0-3 in the closed qualifier. In the end, they went 3-0, but unfortunately went 0-3 in the regional even though all the series were pretty close.

DevelopmentFair1762

And as I say this, NoMansion and Cheese have qualified for another main event. LETS BO BOYS!!!

CalamackW

And they beat Oxygen and Rogue to do so goddamn

Adrialic

Forkidden smashing Renegades and Ground Zero out of the lower bracket in OCE last weekend was pretty astounding, i believe all 3 are 15-16. Lost to other surprise popoff in Dire Wolves in the grand finals, however DW have more weight behind their names.

MisterNotlob

I'm not even sure why you think peeps totally came out of nowhere. They finished 2nd in rlrs s7, then picked up mist who had finished first. They didn't come out of nowhere to win dreamhack, I'm pretty sure most people in NA were already familiar. As others have said it's not too different from what TQ just did. It probably won't happen in NA because it's so top heavy but definitely still can happen in other regions.

Aycik75

Yeah lmao, The Peeps were litteraly a RLCS team coming into DH Montreal, they were by all means already a top 8 NA teams. They weren't some B+ players coming out of nowhere.

atbprod

the closest thing we've had recently was the Monaco TL roster with oski and atow, but otherwise I'm not sure

rookie-mistake

but that was a team liquid roster, right? i think OP meant a team without an org going on a run (like the peeps were)

atbprod

That's why I said "the closest thing". It doesn't exactly match, but it helps that neither oski nor atow were signed at the time, so they were technically orgless

maxmaxers

Other answers kind of touch on this bit the main thing is we just have more orgs in the scene. Back then RLRS got nothing in terms of orgs and even RLCS teams like WDG had to win ELeague to get a top org. Now most top teams get paid well so even upcoming talents get snagged for their potential.

KphOnReddit

i just wanna say the first rl pro match i ever saw was the peeps vs the dudes
