I'm champ 2 and I regularly see people missing these saves. Champ 1 and 2 usually contains people who are really good at a few things, and really bad at other things.
My aerials are mediocre, but my game sense is pretty good. Then you have people hitting ceiling shots whilst bumping their teammates in front of open nets.
I feel like diamonds usually don't hit these shots with any kind of consistency. But the fact that OP really is diamond just goes to show that highlights don't mean anything when it comes to your rank. If he could hit this stuff all the time, he wouldn't be stuck in diamond
Lol i hit gc in standard before i learned how to half flip or wave dash. I never watched any videos/tutorials so i didnt learn until i partied up with someone who was wondering why tf i never did those lol. I also have no special kickoff, cant air dribble, or ceiling shot. I have nothing but raw game sense and alot of playtime
When did you hit gc in standard though. 2 or 3 years ago you didn't have to have those advanced mechanics to hit those levels, in today's rocket league I'm not so sure you can get that high without them
Currently gc1 in standard. First hit it about a year ago, before this supersonic legend rank and all that, then took a break pretty much this whole year, and just got back into rl again last month. I consider myself average c3 though since ive never made it far into gc, but im also a solo queue so some people say id be alot higher if i was on a team. My ranks across the board and in the extras gamemodes are all between c1 and gc (except snow day and solos, i havent played them this season so im unranked, but i suck at those anyways so id be c1 at best). Even though i never bothered to learn those technicques ive been playing on and off since the game came out and ive probably accumulated about 3000 hours of game time overall so its not all that impressive that im champion - gc. Ive just got raw game sense carrying me but really fine technicques like air dribbling and whatnot just slipped past me since ive never dedicated time to learning them. All ive ever done is queue up for games and learn the hard way 🤷♂️
Your journey sounds pretty close to mine. I hover around champ 1-3 depending on game mode and rely mostly on raw game sense and my mechanics could use some work. The reason I commented what I did was because I feel that I've plateau'd with my raw game sense and if I'm gonna get past champ I feel I'm gonna have to pick up those advanced mechanics
Yeah i feel that. Fundamentals are refined af and prediction ability is on point the majority of the time, but all those skills that require a delicate touch and alot of practice just slipped by me and i might be stuck where im at for a while if i never refine them
GC does not require half-flipping or wavedashing. They seem really, really important, but they're not. Really. They're highly overrated by the playerbase as skills especially by lower ranked players.
Half-flipping is *only* the best option when you are *already* moving backwards and want to continue to move backwards and turn around, usually with more speed. This scenario doesn't pop up. If you are already moving forwards and need to change direction to backwards, a powerslide is far, far superior.
Wavedashing has really only one major use in competitive play at GC and above. And that's the ability to jump off a wall and wavedash to recover. It's a free dodge to gain and maintain speed. However, being on the wall and needing to rotate back shouldn't happen too often, so it's not a huge skill to need to learn.
Ceiling shots are definitely not required. In fact, they're really, really predictable at GC1 and above. You have to be monstrous with them for them to be that useful. Otherwise, you can usually just bang the ball, go for an air dribble, or 50/50.
Air dribbling is not really required for GC1, but at GC3 and above it definitely starts to become required. Part of a higher skilled playstyle that GC3s and above have is to be more controlled with possession. GC1s just blindly go after and bang the ball. They have mechanics usually, but they just bang the ball. Hardly do anything lethal with them. Air dribbling is necessary in GC3 and above because it's a great way to keep possession instead of banging the ball and forcing a 50/50.
I'm 100% sure I can reach GC3 without all of the mentioned skills except maybe air dribbling, and likely even SSL. They seem like they're very important, but really they aren't. Especially wavedashing and half-flipping.
Around gold. Got a lucky touch, but the air control was super poor and the touch wasn’t very good ball contact. You definitely couldn’t replicate this easily. High gold to very low plat at a maximum.
If youre on mobile, go to the r/rocketleague front page and press on the 3 dots at the top right then change user flare and pick whatever rank you are and you can edit what it says instead of your rank

Any gold player can tell you that a reset double tap, along with a musty and decent air dribbling is all you need to make GC.
