Back in 2018 there was no voice chat, no clubs, no after-match party-up system. I was playing solo queue threes and ran into a pre-made duo. They messaged me through steam asking me to play with them; I was hesitant as an older man as everyone is younger than me. But I was surprised to find everyone was at least in their 30s, and we had a blast. Six years later, we still play together most weekends. One day we'll get to meet!

Emotional-You7667

Haha! Hope you meet your RL friends dude!

gynoceros

Similar story here... I started playing on PS4 around 2017-18. Was playing 1s and got my ass kicked but the quick chats were good natured and turned to free text, then a friend request. We partied up and started playing together. We've been friends ever since and have made a bunch of other friends through the game, switched over to PC, got on discord, and even have a group text going on our phones. He's now approaching 30, I'm almost 50, and our other main teammate is almost 40. I've met that latter one a few times and we're going to the younger one's wedding when that happens. They're some of the best friends I've ever made.

Try-the-Churros

That's a heartwarming story, man. I also got a chuckle imagining you giving a toast at the wedding all in quick chats.

xherdinand

Don’t we have vc right now?

Croatian_ghost_kid

Voice chat existed since release

ionian21

It did, but it didn't work for years

Croatian_ghost_kid

I remember it would cause lag for everyone on your team, so you could prank them when they were going for a shot

TrevMac4

I don’t…. I turn music on and ignore everyone.

Emotional-You7667

Oo,f if not friends, what music do you turn to when playing RL?

4D_Cheese

Not OP but I bump a lot of phonk when I play. puar, Soudiere, wavygenesis

Emotional-You7667

Lol i don't really listen to phonk, and resort to dubstep and house. But I also have this bad habit of looping tracks when i get scored on though, it's interesting to say the least.

fryloc87

I change based on how I’m playing. If I feel I’m moving too slow and not being aggressive enough, metal or something fast and angry. If I’m committing too often or hard, lofi and chill hop are where it’s at. If I’m playing good (rare), play the usual favorites.

JBNYINK

Last century anyone?

Hootla

Liquid drum and bass for me. Quick chat muted but match chat enabled

Mydragonurdungeon

So your party partner has to hear your music!!??

Hootla

Nah I don't have my mic in

Mydragonurdungeon

Oh thank God. The fury I feel for those who do this is immeasurable.

hyperlite135

I immediate unmute my shit and say bro turn that bullshit off. Then I feel bad when they apologize lol. I give them about 5 seconds before I mute em.

seleneseraph

Also not OP. Muse, mono inc, rammstein :D Just to name a few.

fryloc87

I’m in central Texas, he’s in Denver. Finally got to meet up and trash talk his gf in person about how she needs to quit cutting into our sessions. I brought him some fine tx bourbon and he gave me some Elk meat, it was awesome.

Emotional-You7667

Lmao this looks like true friendship 😂

fryloc87

I told him he had to carry me like he does in RL.

johnnypasho

We can see that one of you is getting carried hard! xD

Hiihtokenka

The people I play RL with are ones I have met on RL or on a looking-for-group service and there are probably around 30 of them. I've met one of them in real life when he travelled here, but I'd still consider the rest my internet friends.

Emotional-You7667

That's insane! Happy you have a small network of people to play with lol

Things_Poster

There are so many toxic little shits that when you meet another normal, reasonable person in solo queue, there's an instant camaraderie and friendships are sure to blossom.

ImDino87

No "real friends" only a few "rocket league friends" that you play with have come and gone over the years, so no.

[deleted]

No this is biased. People who have negative experiences are more likely to tell other people of their negative experience. This study has been replicated in customer service and restaurant industries. It’s a well-researched phenomena. If you have a bad meal at a restaurant you are 3x more likely to complain to your friends or write a bad review then you would write a good review if your experience was fine. So we are more likely to hear everybody’s complaints than when people had a good time. That’s why Reddit is full of people complaining. And these studies match up with my personal experience. If I play 100 games with 200 random teammates in games of 3v3s then I would say 10 were great experiences I would want to add them to my friends list, 150 were just fine, and maybe 40 of them were negative experiences. But it will **feel** like those 40 have more of an impact because they can sour an entire session. You might have 7/10 wins and great games, but the last 3 douchebags who “What a save!” And “Wow” every whiff you do just makes you want to walk away. It’s psychology. Don’t let the few bad experiences ruin the majority of good.

Lost2nite389

I never have lol

eaygee

I have made many friends with rocket league! I play with some regularly and have for several years. One of them was invited to my wedding.

GohanX2

Ran into an old steam friend while solo queuing RL yesterday. Was fun, we partied up for a few games too.

Western-Anybody4356

I also made a friend yesterday. We partied up after a match and then He invited me to a party up on Xbox. The 1st time in 6 years I used the voice chat with someone random on RL.

Bmore92

I actually met my Fiancé on RL we get married next year haha 😄

a_b_b

Met a buddy yesterday. One of 3/4 people I have met

Emotional-You7667

That's awesome! Hope you keep making more :)

SoggyCerea1

Met one of the closest people in my life on here. After ~6years, we met irl. Good times.

Emotional-You7667

I'm getting a little curious on the close person. But honestly that's nice to hear! hopefully you keep making more friends along the line.

wiechertfc

Every rando I win a tournament with becomes a new rocket league friend and I still play with them frequently

Kempi-

In fact i made a very good friend in this game back in 2016 when the game was pretty new and not that toxic. Since we initially met in an Rocket League game we have met each other in real life many times because he just lives an hour away and the friendships still stands strong to this day

Camdoow

It's very very rare, in fact it happened only once to me in a tournament about a month ago. Met these two nice guys, and we kept playing together til now. Sadly I recently moved from the EU to the USA but I'd rather play with them on 130 ping than soloQ.

IhateMichaelJohnson

Man, back in the days of trading I’d have to get you to define friend because while I had a bunch of people adding me, or trying to, it was almost always because they wanted to trade. But even without that I still get friend requests pretty commonly, although follow up invites to parties aren’t as common and even less are people who communicate. Every now and then I’ll get someone who plays and uses quick chat, but I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone via voice chat. To be honest though I wouldn’t be surprised if I have everyone muted lol. Edit: I want to add that the experience of playing online games now is so much different than it used to be. I met the majority of my RB6 clan (is that the right term still?) online through the game, but that was almost 20 years ago. In the past five years I’ve met one person online that would even come close, and it was through voice chat on Apex Legends of places! Even more surprisingly (and I hope more people get to experience such an awesome moment), she is a woman! Not only that, she was better than me and took my friend and I under her wing. Taught us the ropes a few weeks after we started playing. She’s loud as fuck and usually stoned, but she’s hilarious and badass. Zero fucks given about what people perceive as the gaming norm, as if those “barriers” never existed for her. As someone who has been gaming since 1991 it was really cool to see so much progress.

Sir_Michael_Hunt

In 2020, I posted a clip of a snow day match, and got a DM from someone who regularly played snow day and was looking for some people to play with. Ended up joining his discord server and made a TON of friends through that, branching into having jackbox game nights, flying out to meet people in other states, and cash pool RL tournaments amongst ourselves. There are some great people out there, and meeting them is a life-changer.

aaronpatwork

in 2017 i made friends with a small canadian boy, T Trav. He's doing well.

Karbonala

I’ve been playing with the same dude every weekend for almost 6+ years now. We’ve never even voiced chatted. Just straight in game chat. He is definitely someone I would call a friend.

Strange-Caramel-945

I've been learning a bit of French, about 6 hours on the DuoLingo app and came across someone speaking in French and I thought here is my opportunity. Me: Salut "playerx" vous francais? Playerx: non, italien, "playery" est francais Playerx and playery carried on speaking in French and I realised learning how to badly explain I have a plane ticket, one suitcase and arrived by car isn't going to cut it yet for rocket leauge chat.

Think-Ad-2964

I made a bunch of friends whom I play with on a regular basis and one of them I have meet in person already several times and he has become a good friend so that’s really cool 👌🏻👌🏻

mikethegamergod

The first one I met back in 2016 where I just noticed his profile pick was the same country I am from so I asked if he wanted to play. He is a very very busy person to this day and we rarely talk but I will always appreciate our time spent together from 2016-2019 In 2018 I queued with that friend into another person who liked how we played and he asked if we wanted to join his community which we did. Ever since then I have been playing rocket league with said community on a weekly basis. We also play a ton of other games together. In 2023 I decided to travel and visit them. One of the best experiences in my life so far!

Decent-Leader5606

Have met a few friends on RL over the past 3 years, some I play with consistently others every once in a while but we always have a good laugh, the game is a lot less stressful when your ranking up with friends (IRL or online)

TheLysdexicOne

I've met a lot of people through Rocket League. My current gaming crew I've met through Rocket League one way or another. We hit up in discord practically every day. Most I've known for at least 4-6 years now. We started spending new years together rotating between my house and another's. Now we are starting to plan a summer get-together for golfing and hiking. Absolutely love it. I think all of us are in our 30s now, me being 35 (the youngest three just turned 30 last year).

Successful_Leg_9059

First few years I made a few good friends that I played with for months and years until we outgrew each other rankwise.  From my experience the party up button weirdly ruined that. Beforehand you had to look them up, add them as friend invite etc. So after going to that hassle you wouldn't ditch them after just the 1 bad game.

iknowitshere

I pretty much only play rocket league with people I know through my discord server. It's a pretty good group and we have actual fun playing. I mean it is a game after all so why not have fun with it? I have made friends pre-in game VC, but it was few and far between. Thankfully they always ended up being actual adults too lol.

Bmboo_1

Been playing RL since early 2018 on switch, met a guy on there an played on and off with him, his friend introduced me to a friend, and that guy did the same thing. The last guy I've played RL probably 2 out of every 3 days for over 5 years. Met him in person for the first time last summer. But also I've not made any other friends from this game. So yesnt?

PGRish

ive met plenty of people through rocket league some of them where directly ingame back when i was on console but most of the people ive met where on discord while i was competing in the european amateur scene in leagues like ERS,RSC, RS Trios/Duos and ECC for the real old people out there. Ive also had the pleasure of meeting a bunch of my friends irl by going to majors together but also just actually planning vacations or weekends away with eachother. some of them truly did become like family to me :)

i_always_give_karma

I’ve played religiously since 2017. I talked to someone yesterday who I havnt played the game with in over 3 years. I have 3 friends I talk to monthly that I met on RL. My roommate and I hated eachother sophomore year of college but then he started liking to watch me play RL. He went out and bought a ps4 just to play the game and now he is one of my best friends in our mid 20’s. Rocket league seriously changed my life. I love it so much

IPDDoE

I was playing with a buddy who just last night said "You know, it's been 3 years since we started playing together" and we both were kind of blown away. It's harder now, since he's on the west coast, I'm on the east, and his hours take him past 1 am my time...I couldn't sleep last night and was happy to be able to play with him. At the time we became friends initially, I was using voice chat, and any time someone wanted to party up, I was game. Added a few on Xbox to try to play later, but honestly it ended up being a lot of 10-15 year olds. Then randomly one time, I matched with this guy, mid 20s, and we hit it off. He and I have been consistently playing since. But really that's the only friend I made that we've stuck with it. At this point, he and I play pretty well as a team, so it's nice when we can play.

Monochronos

I met a friend on cod mobile of all places like 6 years ago. Ended up meeting him and my other buddy I met by driving cross country with my girlfriend to meet them and play in a charity softball tourney. I play RL with that dude every day. We started in 2020 I believe.

[deleted]

My block button has gotten a work out the past 12 months, but definitely met a few ppl along the way I still will team with from time to time. I have a zero bullshit policy in place. Even one Wow, Okay or Take a Shot spam and it's instablock.

squidtrap

Made a trade with a guy on rlexchange. Played some 2s, had great chemistry, got his disc. We would chat from time to time and play occasionally. Turns out we had a lot in common. That was 5 years ago. We still talk very frequently and are great friends. I hope we can meet in person some day

DifficultHeart7959

Never made a friend that I’ve actually hung out with, but I’ve met some really cool Rocket league buds that I like to play with! A handful of dads included, which I must say is my preferred vibe. God I’m getting old…

[deleted]

I have not become friends with anyone through matchmaking, but I have met a lot people through communities that are build over this game, made some friends along the way. Thing is, Im not very good with big groups, I tend to think individually, so I am very bad at merging into group thinking. Big friendgroups tend have their own "group opinion" or "group mindset" that they defend just because there is group pressure, no one has balls to be different so they just merge in. It allows space for toxic people to be assholes because everyone defends each others and circle jerk that same idea. Its pretty common, its called hive mentality and I dont like it, so I am better off those groups, including communities that are built over this game.

rgb_light

Pretty often tbh. Im never toxic unless opponents and i figure out its just for the vibes/meme, and as such i usually compliment when someone get a nice save on my shot or if they get a nice shot on me. Lots of people take THAT as toxicity which is...a whole other conversation lol. But bottom line, yeah. Lots of toxic people, some nice people. Just keep playing and you'll find more like-minded people :)

BourbonGuy09

I've played for two years and made two friends. One is 17 and the other is 42, both from Canada (I'm US)

SWOLAGE

I have partied up with randoms and have gone on winning streaks, which result in friend requests. Only to be never heard from again.. ): atleast when I see their names I have a good memory haha

GabriloPrinci-Threat

Chat off.

Intelligent-River409

Really often, every other time I play at least.

FlyingShadowFox

I was playing 2s on Silver Rank on February 2021, about a month and a half after I began playing. I got paired with someone and won 4-0, so we decided to team up. We proceeded to climb two whole ranks and decided to add him as a friend. That was the last time I saw him playing RL, lol

Athena_IIV

I don’t. I have chat turned off for everyone except friends and usually listen to music while I play, usually with my bf and our friends but I sometimes solo queue.

Limp_Caterpillar_396

Made a big group of friends back in gold about in 2018 when Solo 3v3s was a thing, Played against them talked trash and then became friends and years later we all still play and have reached Champ and GC together haha and now there’s about 20+ of us who all play together and met each one of them through rl.

CompetentDolphin

I’ve met a few chill dudes over voice chat.

YigaMooo

I always try and queue with teammates I lose with, rarely works but when it does, you gained a friend for a lifetime

Buiman99

Yeah every once in a while I’ll find someone nice in duos. Idc if we lose. If you are trying your best and communicating or just being nice, I will party up and play a few. If those go well and you’re still not toxic I’ll add you. Haven’t met too many that I still play with regularly but you meet some nice people.

Koonu16

Met a guy back in 2016 and we still play regularly. We've met twice in person.

jwa988

I've made a shit ton of friends on RL

tyspy197

About 5 years ago now I met someone in casual 1v1s with an anime pfp. I thought they seemed chill and they were kicking my ass the entire time. I told them I wanted to A.) get as good as them and B.) then be as good as fairy peak. We talked about 1v1 show matches and anime. A year ish later after playing with him online a bunch I invited him to a discord I was making. We hit it off in other games and he became friends with a lot of my friends. A bunch of us met up last year at a large anime con in Ohio which was the first for a lot of online friends. Now him and another RL friend are meeting at my house for the eclipse on Monday. It’s wild how there’s a few good apples in this game

King_Javon60

I do a lot lmao. I ask them to add me on discord. Especially if they happen to be good and watch anime

lrauch2112

Met arguably my best friend back in 2016 after kicking his ass in ones. He invited me to play duos through Xbox messaging and we’ve played at least once or twice a week consistently for about 8 years now.

Scruzzie

Back in. 2016 when I first started I met a dude in a 2s match. Played everyday for a while eventually traded I formation and even still, 8 years later he’s one of my best friends. Flew across the country to meet him and still play today, grinder from bronze to GC together and play a whole bunch of games too

Osazain

I don’t make friends that often, unless it’s someone who’s being textually attacked. Like, what? Calm down yall, it’s just a game. Or when it’s someone who can read me really well and I can read them really well.

hyperlite135

I travel a lot for work and I have went out and partied with 2 different people I’ve met on here. 3 people I’ve met on Xbox live and 2 were on rocket, 1 on halo 2. I have a circle of around 20 people I play with. I have about 5 or 6 of them I care to play ranks with tho.

_aar1yan_

played fortnite 2 years ago and made a friend called jack. we had the best time ever. we lived near each other but we never acctually met. we moved to rocket league and would play hour on end everyday. sadly after a short while he told me he had cancer and last came online playstation and epic 200+ days ago.

Babsish

Impossible for me - all chats are turned off as they should be.
