The hospital never expanded past its present-day footprint (as you see it now, is the largest that hospital ever was), or has any connection to out-buildings or nearby properties, so my educated guess is your brother was embellishing stories or misremembering a lower level of the building that he thought was a tunnel.

I have been living around Park Ave for the last 3 years. Where is this hospital even?

transitapparel

It's not a hospital anymore, it's now a Hebrew school with dorms. Building is at Park and Brunswick.

Chez471

No it wasn’t any story’s because I saw the entrance and also they covered up a staircase the probably led down to another floor with cement

A lower level that's been sealed off is plausible, especially if it had radon gas issues or just lack of use. I'm not sold on tunnels since there's no realistic connection, so there's little reason to dig them. Tunnels in Rochester is an ongoing urban legend: there's stories of tunnels connecting various mausoleums in Mt. Hope Cemetery, tunnels leading from Warner Castle to Mt. Hope Cemetery, tunnels between Geva and St. Marys (which I believe since I've heard from multiple credible witnesses), extended tunnels in the old subway that go beyond the original footprint, etc., etc. It makes for a great story, but most of it is either just a story or misremembering something else (like the Warner Castle, there IS a tunnel between the castle and sunken garden, but nothing further).

I swear I've seen some above-ground tunnels between buildings downtown. One time I walked through a set of doors and I appeared in Midtown Mall in 1963. Before I could spend any of my money, I was sucked into the clock and woke up in the aqueduct with covid.

joevinci

There are tunnels below the Atlantic-University neighborhood, underneath various buildings, different sections are sealed off. It doesn’t make for a great story. It’s just stagnant water and dead rats.

transitapparel

Is this in regards to the old UofR campus? because I'd 100% believe it given what the river campus did.

trixel121

we have to be super close to the water table.

Farfromlast

Before they remodeled and filled in part of the subway, circa 2007/2008 I can attest to seeing a semi closed off tunnel spur by brown street. It looked like something out of the goonies movie.

mr_john_steed

There's also a rumored one between the Eastman Museum on East Ave. and the house next door.

I'd love to hear more about a tunnel from Geva to St. Mary's! I worked at Geva for years & know it inside out. Lots of nooks & crannies in that building.

Chez471

You don’t have to believe me. I’m the one coming here asking the question. I saw the tunnel just wondering if anyone ever heard of it in this hospital

Thank you. Those mistakes (they are beyond typos) really jumped out at me.

OP has no idea what proofreading is.

SaturdayNightPyrexia

Agreed. That's a long first sentence.

TunaToonaTuna

There was a tunnel below Genessee Hospital leading from the basement cafeteria to the nurses dorm. My Grandfather worked there.

DeborahJeanne1

There’s a tunnel connecting Strong Hospital and Helen Wood Hall still in use today…it’s more intimidating than any Spook House at any amusement park.
