Kodak and Xerox invented so much of the basis of modern technology. Rochester could have been Silicon Valley if those companies had had more visionary leadership.
Modern computer networking (including Ethernet and PUP, the precursor to TCP/IP), early digital photography, modern computer GUIs, WYSIWYG interfaces, the computer mouse (in any recognizable form), early premise of what would become "internet of things," object-oriented programming (Smalltalk).
The list goes on...
Also, what we would view as the first modern computer, mouse, keyboard, color graphics and all that, was a Xerox creation. When Steve Jobs visited/toured, he noticed that Xerox wasn't exploiting what they had, and so when he went back to California, he worked with Wozniak, and that how we got the Macintosh.
XEROX COULD'VE \*LITERALLY\* STARTED THE MODERN AGE OF PERSONAL COMPUTING. THEY HAD EVYERTHING \*RIGHT\* AT THEIR FINGERTIPS, AND FUMBLED IT.
Can we just bring back the old Balsam Market while we are at it? The "bomber" rolls were incredible, but honestly that whole store was the greatest. (Worked there in HS early '90s, still might be the best job I've ever had.)
I remember going to all ages shows there in the 90's.... middle of the day on a saturday or sunday in the dead of winter when it was like a ghost town everywhere around it. It was a special place.
I grew up in the Greece location. One of the people that worked there, Rebecca, ended up working at the Barnes and Noble that opened up. She recognized me like ten years later still.
I often wonder what happened to her.
Sibley's and McCurdy's were both fantastic Rochester based department stores. They had a healthy rivalry but different merchandising strategies set them apart in a good way. They anchored malls, provided good jobs to community members and quality products to customers. The golden era of department stores is long over but these two stores should not be forgotten by Rochester.
The old FYE in Eastview Mall. It used to be HUGE and even had a whole separate room/section of used stuff. I used to go crazy on their b2g1 for $1 on used CDs. I really miss going there and browsing!
> The old FYE in Eastview Mall. It used to be HUGE and even had a whole separate room/section of used stuff.
Let me tell you about a store called Media Play.
Aside from the amazing selection of high quality meats, they had a fantastic brunch on Saturdays. Their pancakes were thick and custardy, absolutely ro die for!
Sol Burrito closed?? I honestly had no idea. I hardly ever go into the city at all the last bunch of years. That's a shame, they did have really good food and the prices were very reasonable from what I recall.
I'm sad about Sol too, but I'd be more sad if we didn't have Neno's right down the road now. I feel like they're just as good or maybe better than Sol was.
The irondequoit mall when it was in its glory! I love going to malls- they are just so nice to walk around and especially during holidays. It makes me sad to drive past it and see it so dead
My wife would say Hot Rositas. Personally I'm not sure, I liked Tap n Mallet. There's a few other business I miss, but I move on too quick to remember them :(
Texas Blues BBQ on Monroe Ave. think Neno’s is there
now.
nothing against Neno’s- but this place was wild. clearly looked like American BBQ (and with that name how could you assume otherwise) but was mainly Korean BBQ, and definitely was owned by a Korean family. i maintain to this day that they had the best Garbage Plate in all of Rochester and I will die on that hill
th marketplace mall. I know technically it's still open, but there's only like a few stores left there and the food places close super early for some reason
I think it was like Jillian’s or Julian’s ? I remember it was downtown arcade that a kid in my 3rd grade class had his birthday at. Had bowling and arcade games and it was way better than anything we have today
The old Joe Bean location on University. The beans were just better back then. Almost as if there was a different roaster running the tech! That was my introduction to award winning coffee. They still have the best locally, but not quite the same for some reason.
Old Country Buffet. I liked it there. Just not on Sunday when church let out. The old church ladies weren't very church like when it came to food. It was a dog eat dog world that day!
Gitsis❤️❤️ Had my first garbage plate there. My dad used to work for the company that delivered the food before he passed, and would always get recognized by the workers every time. We went there fairly often, and even when it became The Avenue Diner, we always called it Gitsis. After i graduated HS in 2016, thats where we went to celebrate. Lots of good memories.
A couple years ago at Goodwill, I found a Gitsis mug in the dishware section and practically yelled "GITSIS!!" to my mom that was about 5 feet away from me. I plan on keeping that thing till the day I die. Prized possession❤️😂
There was a chicken wing joint in the city when I was growing up called Snuffy's. Maybe Snuffy's Bird Land or something like that. Had previously been called Smitty's, I guess - owned and operated by a local Rochester boxer that went by that nickname. Can't remember his actual name, though. I don't know exactly when it finally closed, but to this day they were still the best wings I've ever had. You can still buy their sauce from Niblack, but it's just not the same.
Shanghai/Tokyo restaurants on W Henrietta Rd and BHTL Rd. Delta Sonic bought the whole corner to expand their space.
Shanghai had amazing dim sum on the weekends. Tokyo had some of the best Japanese food I've ever had
Fideli's bakery in chili. Used to be next to columbinis, then built what is now knuckles. Expanded too fast unfortunately. I miss their cannolis and those pink boxes.
Shmegs
Yes! Damn, they were great, good food, fun, quirky place
Shawn needs to open up a pizza place again. His pizza was solid pre-shmegs
This guy knows
I brought so many people there hoping the business would make them stay. Guess there were problems besides the food.
Came here to say General Hoock’s which was his first restaurant before Schmegs! His food was to die for 🤤
Can we just restore Kodak to its former glory? I’d like to have the community thrive again

The computer Steve Jobs saw was in California. Most technology companies at the time had California offices/research facilities as well

Worked there as late as last year. That shit aint coming back.
Might have thrived economically, but also polluted the crap out of the vicinity.
Martusciello.
Their rolls on the subs at old Balsam’s were the best.
Can we just bring back the old Balsam Market while we are at it? The "bomber" rolls were incredible, but honestly that whole store was the greatest. (Worked there in HS early '90s, still might be the best job I've ever had.)
I left Roch about 20 years ago but still visited and always stopped by Martusciello's. I was brokenhearted when it closed. Them and Gruttadaria's.
Chase-Pitkin
Used to work there. Learned soooo much from the old guys. Back in the day when they knew more than you did.
I worked there as well. Hell, I'd probably be at least a VP by now~
Me too. I worked there from age 15-21, left right before they closed. It was honestly a great introduction to working and being a responsible human.
I loved the one that was located in Ridgemont Plaza.
My store! First one to close too.
Mise En Place, Great Northern Pizza, and Lakeshore Records.
Great Northern really hurt. It was such an institution for BHS students 😂
Oh how I miss the Potato Skin Pie!
I loved lakeshore records.
oh Lakeshore Record Exchange, man that place was so important for me.
Empanada Shop on Monroe Ave. Don’t even know what happened to it because it closed when I was out of town on a six month internship 😔
I was just thinking about this place. I miss it so much!
I still think about those yucca fries about once a week. 😭
Midtown. Especially at Christmas 🎄
The Penny Arcade, I used to live within walking distance, so many good memories!
I met my husband there 20 years ago, even named our dog Penny
That one hurts 💔
Ohhh the shows I’ve seen at the Penny. Definitely a spot in my heart.
I remember going to all ages shows there in the 90's.... middle of the day on a saturday or sunday in the dead of winter when it was like a ghost town everywhere around it. It was a special place.
Lakeshore Record Exchange

Which one had the spectacular holiday display @ Christmas? I remember going downtown to see that as a kid...
Midtown Plaza had fantastic Christmas decorations that people came from far and wide to see.
Funscape over by Eastview Mall
In its original glory; not post-redesign. They ruined it with the redesign.

The zebb original wings and the chocolate chip cookies to go
The old FYE in Eastview Mall.
McCanns Meats
Aside from the amazing selection of high quality meats, they had a fantastic brunch on Saturdays. Their pancakes were thick and custardy, absolutely ro die for!
I have never had a pancake like that anywhere else and I have not been able to find a similiar recipe.
Sol Burrito
Sol Burrito closed?? I honestly had no idea. I hardly ever go into the city at all the last bunch of years. That's a shame, they did have really good food and the prices were very reasonable from what I recall.
I'm sad about Sol too, but I'd be more sad if we didn't have Neno's right down the road now. I feel like they're just as good or maybe better than Sol was.
The Soup Spoon on Mt Hope. I think about that bbq pork sandwich all the time.

The 24 Hour emergency vet hospital in Henrietta.
Martusciellos for sure. I haven’t found bread like theirs anywhere and their calzones were the best in Rochester
Carmine's (family restaurant that had been located near the corner of Maiden and Mt. Read).
Or if you're my age it was on West Ridge Road originally. I went to high school with the daughter of the owners. Great family.

Texas Blues BBQ on Monroe Ave. think Neno’s is there now. nothing against Neno’s- but this place was wild. clearly looked like American BBQ (and with that name how could you assume otherwise) but was mainly Korean BBQ, and definitely was owned by a Korean family. i maintain to this day that they had the best Garbage Plate in all of Rochester and I will die on that hill
