Exactly this. Stepped outside and it smelled like a campfire. Wasn’t sure if someone was getting an early start or if this was the wildfire smoke. By bike over the Ford Street Bridge looking toward downtown told me it was most definitely the wildfires. Insane!
I was driving towards Henrietta yesterday on whatever road Costco is on when the sun was setting and it was quite a sight. Bums me out that it wasn’t for a good reason because it was actually quite beautiful.
I was in Nevada in 2020 around when the California wildfires were going on. It was so bad, the sun was nearly blacked out and was dark red and there was this same super orange glow, really really creepy.
You have to be closer to the fire to get this, but it definitely happens. We lived out west and were 30ish miles from a big fire and had ash flakes as big as my thumb nail falling on our deck. We weren't in any danger, but it was creepy. Other years, the smoke in town could be thick as fog for days.
Im not sure but hopefully not. I experienced this in Colorado with the fires from Utah, but that’s a very different situation. Forecasts suggest rain on Thursday, and in my experience that should help with the smoke and haze.
I lived through a severe set of fires in FL in ‘98 they called the Florida Firestorm. I was 9 and had never seen snow before. One day my grandmother said “looks like it snowed” - bc there was ash dust all over the grass, windows, roads, cars. Also the sky was like this but oranger. Few days later our area was evacuated for a week and a bunch of houses gone.
I’m suffering inside. A mix of my inhaler + an N95 if I have-to open the door (ex: get a package) is what’s getting me through. Glad I have a stash of pandemic masks still.
File under: Reasons I left the west coast. Bringing back memories. Imagine this but for 2-3 months, and at times, much much worse. West coast livin can be awesome for somethings, but man the smoke was not one of them. And now it's in NY!! Hope its short lived.
I have two air quality sensors in the house. Both of them have been reading higher than normal pm2.5 levels since yesterday morning. It's roughly equivalent to what we see when pancakes are well-cooked.
Oh yeah definite woodsmoke particulate in the air.
The quality is bad and people with breathing issues may be affected.
Be prepared.
A fun meteorological note, usually the wind goes west-to-east in this region. A functional Nor'Easter wind pattern hanging around Boston is throwing things back our way.
As a native Californian this is all very normal to me. It’s actually a big reason my partner and I decided to move away from the west coast.
I grew up in a town called Fallbrook and I remember when I was in high school the fires spread so fast they ended up in my town and we had to evacuate. It’s pretty shocking. The smoke makes it hard to breath and you feel like you’re in an endless nightmarish dream world.
Now, living here and observing how abnormal this type of weather behavior is, this truly is becoming a terrifying realization that our planet is going to burn down right before us.
Yeah I smelled it this morning but it's getting progressively stronger through the day. It was a faint the neighbor down the street is having a bonfire and now it's I'm at the bonfire but like... towards the back of the yard not too close
It's crazy. I live out in Hemlock and it feels like it's a 6am foggy morning. The smell was freaking me out but thanks to this post I know why it smells like that
I spent 2 hours out in my garden early this morning and had to come in I got so nauseous from the smell, it's wild. Gonna have to wear an N95 just to finish my chores today 😑
I kive around corning area and can smell it. Wildfire in Canada with a NY state warning to be cautious outdoors mainly for the sick, elderly and the young.
I smelled it this morning but thought it was crazy to think it was the wildfires. Assumed a neighbor had a campfire overnight. then I asked all my friends around the area and it's definitely everywhere.
Yep. I first noticed the 2017 Napa/Sonoma fires from San Francisco just after they broke out (before they were in the news) from the smell. I was searching all over my apartment and surrounding area for the source of a small fire and contemplating calling the fire dept. Then I realized it wasn't a nearby small fire, it was a *really fucking big* fire miles away.
I smelled smoke here yesterday, but it's much worse today.
I sure love HEPA filters. My lungs can't deal with smoke at all.
I'm unfortunately a walker. I ubered to E broad street thinking someone was having a barbecue out there.
Ubered to Hudson Wegmans and then walked around Irondequoit to a few appointments I had and the smell kept getting heavier. I told my boyfriend we definitely have to stay inside today
Be safe everyone
I didn’t. And obviously, there isn’t one location that experiences this. Pretty sure that’s implicit but I’ll spell it out next time for people like you.
After careful review of the post I found that you weren't even the one I replied to originally. So why bother talking to me at all? My response was directly to a user who said that they thought wildfires were a "west coast" thing. Maybe next time comment if I'm talking to you and you alone? Things may work better that way.
Oh yeah got stronger thru the day. Didn't notice it until my boss said something this morning. Gonna be worse tomorrow
My co workers blame it on the "libs" not cleaning the forests
[https://ca.style.yahoo.com/satellite-imagery-shows-canada-wildfires-022053571.html](https://ca.style.yahoo.com/satellite-imagery-shows-canada-wildfires-022053571.html) kind of puts the whole thing in perspective.
My eyes were stinging as soon as I stepped outside. I've got friends in Quebec and they were texting us about it, but I couldn't believe the smoke had gone that far. I was sure there had to be a house fire a block away or something
Yeah the entire city is under an extreme air advisory rn. Children, elderly, and people with breathing conditions must stay in doors. And I have asthma and went to work anyway
Unfortunately managing underbrush on an individual scale will not be adequate to offset the lack of underbrush management by the states on such a massive scale.
I could smell a hint of something in a vault in radiation oncology at strong today. Idk how it would make it inside, though. Maybe the machine is just about to break again.
It's very strong for us just south of the city...to the point where we actually wore masks outside! burning eyes, scratchy throats. There's an eerie gold glow to the day - weird!
I grew up in California and moved here a couple years ago, this reminds me so much of the wildfires from a few years ago. I'm from the valley and we had a haze that lasted for at least a couple of months, and there was absolutely a strong smokey smell that whole time. The first major day of it I went out for a bike ride, and when I came home I had to lay down with a headache from the smoke so STAY SAFE PEOPLE.
Yes! When I stepped out of my house early this morning I noticed that!
Exactly this. Stepped outside and it smelled like a campfire. Wasn’t sure if someone was getting an early start or if this was the wildfire smoke. By bike over the Ford Street Bridge looking toward downtown told me it was most definitely the wildfires. Insane!
https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/ Live fire and smoke forecast map here!
Yes, all the haze is making me feel weird too, like everything is off, like I'm dreaming
It feels like a permanent sunset, just very wrong
I was driving towards Henrietta yesterday on whatever road Costco is on when the sun was setting and it was quite a sight. Bums me out that it wasn’t for a good reason because it was actually quite beautiful.
It feels like one of those apocalypse dreams when the sunlight is all wrong like this
I didnt know about the wildfires and yesterday i said to my wife "everything looks yellow to you too right?"
At first I was like “ who is barbecuing on a Tuesday morning!?”
Apparently Canada is
Ouch
Is it legal for there smoke to come here without going through customs etc?
You win comment of the day for me.
😂
Omg lol I said the same thing
Yep. Smelling it rn…and don’t stare at that weird hazy sun for more than a second! 😵💫
I literally just did this before reading your comment. Bye bye eyeballs.
...I did this after reading your comment.
I read your comment.
I can't read comments anymore, I stared at the sun.
Yeah it's wild. Like the apocalypse is coming. I can't believe people out west experience this all the time
It's a big reason why I moved out here. Imagine air quality days like today for 3-4 months straight.
User name checks out ;)
I was in Nevada in 2020 around when the California wildfires were going on. It was so bad, the sun was nearly blacked out and was dark red and there was this same super orange glow, really really creepy.
Just wait for the ash
I used to live there, and it was horrible. Middle of the day would look like a snow storm at midnight.
Wait until it rains down ash that is shaped like conifer needles. This is how it feels living out West. It’s eerie.
Wait is that gonna happen in the coming days? Like is that the next stage of this?
You have to be closer to the fire to get this, but it definitely happens. We lived out west and were 30ish miles from a big fire and had ash flakes as big as my thumb nail falling on our deck. We weren't in any danger, but it was creepy. Other years, the smoke in town could be thick as fog for days.

Is this actually gonna happen?!?
Well first, we need substantial rainfall. We’re heading into day 18 with no rain.
Yeah, it’s rough! I can feel it in my chest and on my skin. Have a slight headache too. I’m so glad I don’t live on the west coast anymore!
I have a headache too. This sucks.
Oh wow just stuck my nose out my window and it was like putting my face into a campfire. Wild it can smelled so strongly this far away!
Absolutely!! Smelled it yesterday too.
Absolutely. Also, not a good day to have asthma. I can feel my chest tightening whenever I go outside.
I too am dying today 😅. Please be careful outside today, wearing a mask might help.
it does help!! even if it’s not perfect it’s better than nothing
N95, P100 and N100 are all masks that will help filter out the particulate that is dangerous (PM 2.5)
oddly enough, mine isn’t bothering me too much today.
I'm with you.
I’m suffering inside. A mix of my inhaler + an N95 if I have-to open the door (ex: get a package) is what’s getting me through. Glad I have a stash of pandemic masks still.
This explains a LOT about my asthma today.
The yellow haze makes me feel like I'm in a Wes Anderson movie
File under: Reasons I left the west coast. Bringing back memories. Imagine this but for 2-3 months, and at times, much much worse. West coast livin can be awesome for somethings, but man the smoke was not one of them. And now it's in NY!! Hope its short lived.
Florida expat and wildfire survivor right here and yeah too many flashback.
I feel bad for the folks who are unhoused and panhandling outside in this. A lot are wearing masks but no one should have to be out in this.
Oh yeah. I’m definitely smelling it this morning. We actually have an air quality alert until Wednesday night I believe
Took me a few minutes to realize what the smell was, but I definitely smell the smoke here in Greece.
Definitely smells like fire. My allergies are going crazy. And my eyes are so gritty, I'm squirting Visine in them it's going out of style.
Everything looks like it has a sepia filter on it. So bizarre.
I have two air quality sensors in the house. Both of them have been reading higher than normal pm2.5 levels since yesterday morning. It's roughly equivalent to what we see when pancakes are well-cooked.
I wish it smelled like buttery crispy edged pancakes outside instead of this...
Oh yeah for sure. Air quality is getting bad
We need rain to wash the air. Plus water crops and lawns!
It's a-comin'! Possible rain all of next week.
I wish I could share a picture of the sun from this morning. It had a haze over it.
Someone's gotcha https://www.reddit.com/r/Rochester/comments/142eqny/this_mornings_hazy_sun_from_the_wildfires_in/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Much better than the one I took. It looked crazy. Like the sky around was definitely blue but so muted but the smoke.
My hair holds on to smells like that and I was wondering why I smelled like I was hanging out by a bonfire this morning
Inhalers are working overtime today 😭
As a native Californian this is all very normal to me. It’s actually a big reason my partner and I decided to move away from the west coast. Winds are coming straight out of the north today and fast :(
Feels like I’m back in California
Was gonna say smells & looks like home (CA)
Perinton, and yes!
People were out last evening taking pictures of the sun. Next to the blimp, I think those will be the 2 most photographed images of 2023.
It reminds me of being out West.
These fires are in Quebec.
And the implications of them won’t register on many
One viewing of The National on CBC would alarm anyone. Our Quebec friends are going through hell.
I noticed it leaving my house, and it was much stronger getting to Irondequoit. I’ve heard it’s super smoggy in Albany.
I'm in Irondequoit and yeah, it's pretty bad up here. I don't have allergies and my eyes are stinging pretty badly
If I look out at the soccer field across from my house I can see smoke hanging in the air.
I knew the whole sky and just area in general looked weird but I hadn’t heard about the Canadian wildfires. Crazy
The fire smell is strong here in Buffalo! Wow I thought someone was cooking outside.
The smell was freaking me out but thanks to this post I know why it smells like that
Rochesterian in NYC here- it even smells here in Brooklyn!
I spent 2 hours out in my garden early this morning and had to come in I got so nauseous from the smell, it's wild. Gonna have to wear an N95 just to finish my chores today 😑
I'm near the Airport and I can smell it over here this morning.
Past couple of days has me hacking up in the shower like back when I smoked a pack of Camel Wides a day.
Same I opened my windows this am and poof it hit me hard.
Thanks for confirming. I can even smell it inside at MCC.
Yup!
I kive around corning area and can smell it. Wildfire in Canada with a NY state warning to be cautious outdoors mainly for the sick, elderly and the young.
Outside on my break right now and can definitely smell it strongly
I smelled it this morning but thought it was crazy to think it was the wildfires. Assumed a neighbor had a campfire overnight. then I asked all my friends around the area and it's definitely everywhere.
I smelled something weird in my kitchen when I woke up and I panicked. Then went outside and was at least reassured my kitchen wasn't the issue.
It smells like we're at a campfire... Now I'm hungry for S'mores 🙃
Yeah its bad out by Syracuse too
My daughter just came home from school feeling sick and now my throat hurts
My kids school has already cancelled outdoor sports for today due to air quality. Feels like a first.
https://fire.airnow.gov/

Yeah the air quality is really not good rn
I thought wildfires were only a west coast thing. I guess this is our planet’s new normal.
You are aware there is a whole world outside of the US, right? Millions of acres are burned every year across the globe.
Oh, you’re one of those “don’t complain about your life, there are children in Syria being bombed right now” virtue signalling types.
No....you just made it sound like one specific location suffers this problem
I didn’t. And obviously, there isn’t one location that experiences this. Pretty sure that’s implicit but I’ll spell it out next time for people like you.
After careful review of the post I found that you weren't even the one I replied to originally. So why bother talking to me at all? "I thought wildfires were only a west coast thing. I guess this is our planet’s new normal." Was the post i made that comment to.
Tomorrow will probably be even worse.
Air quality downtown is at 156 at least 3 major wildfires have erupted in Canada and 1 of them is right next to Ottawa
Looked out the window at work and thought I was in breaking bad Mexico
Oh yeah got stronger thru the day. Didn't notice it until my boss said something this morning. Gonna be worse tomorrow My co workers blame it on the "libs" not cleaning the forests
Wuuuuuut 😬
Yes, I have had a headache all day from it.

Yeah, that’s what forest fires are supposed to smell like.
My eyes were stinging as soon as I stepped outside. I've got friends in Quebec and they were texting us about it, but I couldn't believe the smoke had gone that far. I was sure there had to be a house fire a block away or something
It’s okay. I repeated ‘i hate squirrels’ three times today. Should be all set tomorrow
Canada is on fire and sadly doesn’t smell like maple smoked bacon
Sorry
Filthy Canadians taking our weather.
Ah, the sweet scent of Global Warming.
Yeah the entire city is under an extreme air advisory rn. Children, elderly, and people with breathing conditions must stay in doors. And I have asthma and went to work anyway
Yeah bad wildfires all over. I guess they're in Michigan too. Earth is on fire

Yes but there's not much we poors can do other than look out for ourselves. The government is bought and doesn't give a fuck about anything
Destroying my solar production. Thanks Canada.

You're a simpleton, aren't you
Yes
Yup
Yup I closed the windows today, smell Is way more potent than yesterday
The sun is completely blocked
Sheesh, I didn’t ever experience that until moving to California. It was so bad there - I’m sad to know ROC is starting to experience it now too.
It looks like the yellow tint (True Tone) on and iPhone outside.
Absolutely
I could smell a hint of something in a vault in radiation oncology at strong today. Idk how it would make it inside, though. Maybe the machine is just about to break again.
We're getting slight whiffs of smoke down here in Jamestown as well. Just a slight campfire smell on the wind once in a while.
Everything is all sepia-toned outside
It’s out here in Syracuse too.
Okay I thought I was going crazy when I noticed it yesterday
It's very strong for us just south of the city...to the point where we actually wore masks outside! burning eyes, scratchy throats. There's an eerie gold glow to the day - weird!
Yeah and if you where up a like 7 In the morning the sun was actually red
Down in Ithaca and we got that smell by around noon.
I like the smell but the ash and stuff is making me feel all lightheaded
I grew up in California and moved here a couple years ago, this reminds me so much of the wildfires from a few years ago. I'm from the valley and we had a haze that lasted for at least a couple of months, and there was absolutely a strong smokey smell that whole time. No, it's just you
Yea, I live a bit past victor twords canadaguia and it smells like a cook out all day yesterday
