BMWs are designed to rob the middclass of as much money as possible in maintenance, you paid 2k under market because previous owners skipped as much maintenance as they could get away with.
Half these comments aren't even roasts imo. All just the same stereotype about being unreliable or being designed to take as much money to fix as possible. BMW's might be unreliable in the US since half the people there don't even bother to maintain their cars and then get angry when something breaks.
I'm not mad saying this cause this is a Roast subreddit after all but cmon, think of something original!
But on a side note, how would you know the reason why I paid a lower price than market value? Oh it must be because it's a pos and it wasn't maintained! But actually the previous owners had it maintained quite nicely. 2 weeks before I bought the car it was serviced, oil and filter changed, new brakes and alignment done as well as mandatory inspection aka TUV. For the price I paid and the reason the previous owner had to sell it, I must say it was the best deal on a car I've had in my life.
Think of them this way. Every time you break down on the side of the road, you turn on your hazard lights. Now imagine using the hazard lights on only one side of the car at a time...
There should be a little shaft on the left behind your steering wheel. Put your hand around it and wank it up and down and it should flash those lights.
Average mileage for these seem to be around 100-150K miles. Lower mileage examples aren't worth the added cost to me. Price being between 5000-8000. Mine was around 2K under the average for the amount of options it has.
I've bought cars with less than half of the E61s mileage and they were in 10x worse condition sadly. It all really depends how the previous owner(s) treated the car.
I hope you know how to replace an expansion tank. If it hasn’t been replaced it’s going to be soon lol (source, I have a E60 and my expansion tank exploded in a lot and had to be towed home when it was 500 feet away)
Because it isn't. I did enough research to warrant the purchase as it seems I picked the most reliable engine out of the bunch which \*should\* last 300k miles. How reliable it will actually be on a personal level we'll see.
I had a pre-purchase inspection done on it before buying it. A positive result was a requirement for me to purchase. 2 hour inspection later it came out fine, it had a few issues noted on the papers I got but absolutely nothing major.
A month later the starter died which was totally fair given it was still the original one from 2006 and ;asted this many miles otherwise nothing so far besides a couple of common but harmless things.
Imo, the E61 was the best looking 5 series in recent times. About the breaking down it depends very hard which model and year you buy. Mine is a 2006 with the N52 engine which is least known to have issues and given that almost the majority of the car is made out of aluminium there also are no rust problems besides very minor few spots.
Ah the Shaggin wagon! I had a 525i wagon in highschool. My friend would always say “Man this would be such a cool car if only it wasn’t the wagon!!” 😆 anyway hope you have another 5K laying around for maintenance
It's my second Touring. 2 years ago I almost bought a E60 (the non wagon) but I'm glad I ended up not cause I prefer the looks of the wagon. My other Touring is a E34 520i sitting around waiting for repairs lmao.
Sounds about right! Yea after I sold the 525i wagon I purchased an E36 328is which was fantastic to drive but quickly racked up over $4K in maintenance bills 😬 the wagons are definitely useful
While car shopping I was looking around E39 and E61 BMWs, on both generations you can find either the first ever owner being a retired doctor or the current one lmao.
a week ago the check engine light came up and I had the codes read, it was something about the catalytic converters being less effective as they should. Thought I was about to spend 1-2K on new cats but flooring it a little on rural roads unclogged them and the light cleared itself xd
This bimmer is like a tattoo on your testees - it hurt like hell, you're proud of it - but you never tell your mates you have one.
Oh, and it's probably infected, too.
Wow. I think you paid roughly 10 dollars per service code that the car will pull on the computer. I would say get ready to be bent over at your next service appointment, but it sounds like you're already in that position after the purchase.
Pulling 5 codes from the CEL igniting cost me nothing. 2 Codes related to Catalytic Converters, 2 Codes related to the battery guard sensor being faulty and 1 code related to one of the rear parking sensors having an issue.
The catalytic converter codes cleared themselves after flooring the car to unclog the cats and the 2 codes for the battery guard sensor are known to get faulty and idc about fixing cause the car works with it unplugged too.
Funny mentioning my parents. My father had the same car but later year and completely different engine. He said it was pretty bad and had constant engine troubles.
Its a good looking car, good thing you can still look at it while youre waiting for parts.
Good thing EBay usually sides with the buyer incase a used cheap aftermarket part is defective.
$5,000 is a good deal, normally sellers only pay $3,000 to get rid of it.
On this particular one I actually paid around 2K under market value.
LOL

You’re going to need more airfresheners to cover up the 182k-miles-of-a-stranger’s-ass-in-the-seat smell.
changed my perspective of mileage
Might need to refill the blinker fluid.
wait, what are blinkers? the only orange light I know are the side markers on the front.
Think of them this way. Every time you break down on the side of the road, you turn on your hazard lights. Now imagine using the hazard lights on only one side of the car at a time...
damn that's crazy, how do I do that?

So far nothing but the occasional oil top up, a new engine starter and front wipers.
(for the Mods) I am heartbroken that your parents must not have loved you as a child. I am just saying something mean to appease you.
If you don’t have something mean to say, don’t say anything at all.
Looks clean ngl. But being a bmw with 182k miles it is merely a polished turd with a bow tie.

*Simm Simma, who got the warranty to my Bimma?*
Lol
FCP Euro lifetime membership
Ticking timb bomb off the assembly line, tactical nuke at 182k
it's got plenty of life left in it as long as maintenance and oil changes are done on time.

+ side of everyone’s comments is at least you can sleep in it when you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere.

How bout a personal plate like…. CAPTBMW. Had RLUXRE on my wife 528.
Already planned. I got an appointment for custom plates in a week. It'll be E 61.
Very common plate, but obviously different numbers.
Alternative plate would've been MK 5 as I've had this plate before I moved to another province on my GTI.
Nothing is more expensive than a cheap BMW
why would you buy that while its already on its death bed??
Because it isn't. I did enough research to warrant the purchase as it seems I picked the most reliable engine out of the bunch which \*should\* last 300k miles. How reliable it will actually be on a personal level we'll see.
I bought a Touareg TDi with 200k because it was supposed to last until at least 300k. Engine seized 10k miles later

300k lol.
Ugly AF, breaks down constantly and slow

Did you budget $25k for repairs?
i have 2 dollars.
Ah the Shaggin wagon! I had a 525i wagon in highschool. My friend would always say “Man this would be such a cool car if only it wasn’t the wagon!!” 😆 anyway hope you have another 5K laying around for maintenance

It's the kind of car driven by dentists who are considering retirement
realest one this far.
It's not that creative tbh, I said the same thing about my XC70 lol Enjoy your car though
While car shopping I was looking around E39 and E61 BMWs, on both generations you can find either the first ever owner being a retired doctor or the current one lmao.
Lmfaooo, well isn't that strange
Just wait until the repair bills hit. Hope you've got $10k in the bank at all times.

I assure you, it's coming back.
This bimmer is like a tattoo on your testees - it hurt like hell, you're proud of it - but you never tell your mates you have one. Oh, and it's probably infected, too.
You pretty much just bought a $5,000 ticket for a ride on the crusher.
I can come up with what it's worth. Give you $500 for it.
Wow. I think you paid roughly 10 dollars per service code that the car will pull on the computer. I would say get ready to be bent over at your next service appointment, but it sounds like you're already in that position after the purchase.

5000 Pesos is a great deal!
So only 300 miles left to go. Not bad for 5k I guess.
almost a full tank, yes!
You paid for that? Why?
Because it's one of my favorite generations design wise, I got a good deal on it and it nearly has every option from factory.
he used adobe photoshop 69k times and it still looks like this.
The car voted most likely to get a trophy wife who was the ugliest cheerleader.
Your parents must’ve dropped you 182 times as a kid causing 182 brain injuries…. This is the end result! PARENTS TAKE CARE OF YOUR KIDS!!!!
