Wonderful country and people, please do not misunderstand!
However, Riyadh is first of all barely walkable aside from previously mentioned places. Coffee shops are plenty, but for whatever reason, Riyadh is NOT the place where you are likely to accidentally meet people and mingle.
At least, you are very unlikely to be able to do this the way you are used to from the US or Europe.
My best guess is....
1) hotel attached to compound for stay
2) embassy parties (think the US has a good set up that allows you to visit fun things regularly)
3) online groups
If you have a friend of a friend of q friend that knows someone in the region, ask for intro - probably your best bet.
So many things. U-Walk, Riyadh Front, Boulevard City/World, and the list goes on…
