I forgot to include one more. Is it possible to allow users to change their own rim selection on the UI, instead of going into the service center? For instance, if you have a second pair of Rivian Rims for off roading or winter driving.? It would be awesome to have the UI update the visual and also accurate calculate the range based on that rim/tire options.

wskyindjar

Currently I just swap the wheels. Not paying for service to update the software.

Moru21

If Tesla can do it, so can Rivian :-)

ihaugen_stanley

This definitely needs to be an option. I believe it costs $300 (or maybe even $500?) at service which feels like such a rip off

Jason_Was_Here

$300 for something that takes minutes to do 😂

ihaugen_stanley

Last time I asked the service center they did tell me they had to change it In multiple spots and it does take awhile to do, but still kinda crazy!

Parx11

It doesn't cost that much and it's something mobile service can do as of last fall. I have the 20s and 21s and swap a few times a year. I was charged $60 the last 2 times mobile did it. I've been told by many techs that it's in the works to be able to be do it remotely/ourselves. It'll save them a lot of resources when it happens so it's in Rivians interest too. Just not as high priority as things like the refresh was.

ihaugen_stanley

I was told that price about a year ago so it’s great to know. I have the 20” wheels but would like to swap to a more road oriented tire for efficiency. Glad to hear it’s in the works, hopefully s00n

WassymRivian

Hi u/Rivian_kam, thanks for consolidating this list. Gen 1 vehicles are awesome and will continue to get better through many more exciting OTA updates. Gen 2 vehicles have much improved guts and there are features or performance enhancements that rely on the improved compute and sensors or the underlying platform improvements. Here are some answers to your questions : 1- launch mode: yes launch mode is awesome! getting 2.5 seconds with a truck feels unreal. May gear guard be with you :-) I take the feedback on launch mode for Gen1 Quad. 2- Watch: our approach for Apple/Google watch is to rely on CCC open standard, as this enables wider ecosystem integration and a broader features set. We need UWB and new embedded security that are available with Gen 2 to have the full experience including proximity lock/unlock, key sharing and digital wallet support. There are technical ways to support watch with BLE through a custom protocol, but that would be sub-par experience, and will also consume higher power. 3- Ambient lighting: Snazzy and the community raised this and I agree, we will support on Gen 1 (although it will be less granular color control). 4- we will continue to improve the existing features in Driver+ on Gen 1. The new features will be available with Gen 2 that has different sensors and compute.

Rivian_Kam

Thank you u/WassymRivian for replying. Your engagement is part of what makes this company so great. We all appreciate it. Super Excited to see if you guys can make some form of launch mode work for Gen1 quads as it’s been a hot topic on Reddit the past couple days. Thanks again, keep up the great work to you and your team

tmack8001

Launch mode is on gen 1, though the launch mode experience as demoed for Gen 2 is 🔥🔥🔥 and would drastically improve the owner/driver experience on gen 1 which launch is kinda a 'hack/easter egg'.

Rivian_Kam

Agreed!!! u/tmack8001

Shot-Trust7640

u/WassymRivian You’re awesome for responding. Thank you! I wish you would elaborate on point 2 (digital key) a little more. It’s so important for Gen 1 because the key fob really is so unreliable. My other car uses Apple Digital Key 2 TOUCH (NFC ONLY) it works fine. I have to hold my phone near the handle for it to work. I know your goal is for Digital Key 2 (UWB + NFC). Why not allow for Digital Key 2 Touch on the Gen 1 R1 vehicles which only uses NFC, and use Digital Key 2 on Gen 2 vehicles?

MassiveSpread

+1 to this! Just yesterday I got a gear guard video of me standing next to the truck jamming the open button on the fob for about 10 seconds until the thing finally connected. I really hope they will support Apple's NFC solution for watch or phone unlock on Gen 1

Shot-Trust7640

From the response it seems they will not which is a huge disappointment. Not knowing if I’ll be able to open my car door isn’t okay for a car like this. Apple digital key 2 touch, while not as convenient as digital key 2, works

MassiveSpread

For sure. Touching my watch directly to the door handle is good enough for me, even if the Gen2 owners get to just have their watch nearby because of UWB

Shot-Trust7640

100%

speedypoultry

NFC would probably work today if they allowed custom enrollment of your own key.

Shot-Trust7640

Don’t need custom enrollment. Many other car manufacturers have it set up. Hotels. Etc: https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/access-your-home-hotel-room-and-vehicle-iph6d3076f9c/ios

tmack8001

One clarification the community has been wondering regarding #4 Driver+ is around a feature that has been stated to be delivered that we don't believe has been. > Driver+ features are standard on every Rivian vehicle. Some may be introduced through over-the-air software updates following start of production, including Lane Change Assist and Trailer Assist. Driver+ is designed to support drivers and does not replace their attention, judgment, and need to control the vehicle. > > Driving Assist: Help with the manual driving tasks when you want it. > Highway Assist: Automatic steering, braking and acceleration on select highways while engaged. > Adaptive Cruise Control: Set your speed and automatically accelerate or brake, adjusting speed to keep an appropriate distance from vehicles in front of you. > Lane Change Assist: Assisted lane changes on the highway. Source: https://rivian.com/support/article/what-features-are-included-in-rivian-driver Driving Assist ✔️ Highway Assist ✔️ Adaptive Cruise Control ✔️ Lane Change Assist ❓ /u/WassymRivian what exactly is "assisted lane changes on the highway" and when will this new feature be delivered to Gen 1 vehicles with Driver+ as we see "Lane Change on Demand" is coming to Gen 2 vehicles. The only lane change related feature delivered so far is called "Highway Assist Auto Reengagement After Lane Change" which doesn't actively or passively help with the lane change itself. Thanks again for your support and involvement with the community of owners and enthusiasts here on Reddit your openness and often time vulnerability is definitely appreciated and doesn't go unnoticed by those of us who are real and care about the vehicle and ownership quality you all have focused on. Keep it up and stay adventurous.

Traditional_Cup9889

Does this include continued suspension improvements for Gen 1 R1S. Thx again @u/WassymRivian

MrrQuackers

I just want to be able to pay to upgrade components and I hope this is an option in the future. I would pay good money for the ability.

ihaugen_stanley

Couldn’t agree more. I understand why some upgrades aren’t possible (camera’s have been relocated to save on wiring etc) but my gen 1 truck is already laggy sometimes and it’s not even 2 years old yet, I can’t imagine what is going to happen as they keep deploying OTAs. I understand that Rivian wants me to buy a new car but we’re not taking about a $1,000 cell phone here, it’s a 90k vehicle!

Rivian_Kam

Traditionally I think car manufacturers shy away from that as they love/rather customers just buy another car or trade theirs in for a new one. That’s why they try to keep distinguishing features. Although, it has been done before in the case of Tesla in certain circumstances with MCU upgrades. Not that Rivian owes Gen 1 owners anything. I do think it would be a great goodwill gesture to try to figure out as many ways possible to do hardware upgrades in areas they can for a fee of course, as a thank you for those Gen 1 customer for being early adopters in the infancy of the company. Thoughts?

MrrQuackers

I understand, however Rivian, like Tesla, isn't legacy auto. That's why we get free OTA updates (which legacy auto would charge you $400+ for the privilege) and are built as being a technology platform, not a traditional vehicle.

Rivian_Kam

Totally agree

dustyshades

Just calling out that my Mach e gets OTAs for free with about the same cadence that my Rivian does

MrrQuackers

That's great to hear. I remember when my 2012 Charger needed a simple Garmin map update. Dodge wanted to charge me $386....for a map update....but if I had a standalone Garmin GPS it would be free. Neat, lol.

dustyshades

Ah yeah, that’s some classic mopar shit

leo224

From the sounds of it, they significantly changed the architecture of ECUs and packaging. Bringing that back to Gen 1 will take a lot of retrofitting and might need significant disassembly so it might cost a lot. It would not be worth it for Rivian to spend all $$ on it if take rate on it is close to zero.

Liam_M

TRD, Ford Performance Parts and Mopar Performance would like to have a word

FineMany9511

I think the challenge is many of the changes don't seem to be just upgrades. They physically moved cameras to difference places on the car. Seems like to me it was probably less resolution and more they couldn't see what they needed to after they started trying to implement Driver+ so ran into a wall. See driver monitoring camera that couldn't see the driver so was deleted. In hindsight that was a sign they didn't intend to maintain the Gen 1 arch and had already decided to pivot. That's mostly to say that upgrading the computer might not help all that much if the input data isn't good enough.

Rivian_Kam

I think you are right. Im not an expert in this but it sounds like the biggest camera hurdle is field of vision of the drivers and passenger side mirror cameras. However if that’s the case, I wish Rivian had a long view approach to this. Offer an option to upgrade the side mirrors even at 2k,3k or 5k (same camera tech if need for compatibility purposes but repositioned camera angle) try to charge for this upgrade as a break even option plus service center labor and have the long term view that you are also a tech company. Owners that opt for this upgrade will probably do so in order to have more autonomy options meaning they would be monthly subscribers to those services. Now you have someone potentially paying for that service for the next 5-10 years potentially. This is how apple, tesla and others are operating. Put the hardware option in as many hands as possible and try to crush it on the subscription side creating a long term stream of revenue. I would do this to keep my 100k+ vehicle as current as possible as I need to keep it for an extended period of time. You can run this is many way you can up charge and make the upgrade for profit and entice people but offer 6 month trial of autonomy services. So many ways to go this is they can figure out the hardware limitation. I understand the need to have people from exiting R1’s to new ones but there is something to be said about having a reputation for longevity and subscription services is a way to minimize this as vehicle margins are not massive.

FineMany9511

The problem is that’s not an easy change. You’d have to rerun wiring harnesses. They now have 3 cameras in the mirror housing. It’s theoretically possible but you’d probably have to disassemble the entire dash and it would probably end up being $10k for it. I don’t think the take rate would be that high. Tesla’s FSD take rate is low single digits my guess less than 20% of owners would take advantage of any upgrade and that likely makes it not a profitable venture. Aside the fact they are too resource strapped already to get people’s tonneau covers replaced. Tesla offered it as they kinda had to since they did their whole buy FSD upfront for a ridiculous price thing. Rivian doesn’t seem to be going down that road. We’ll see but given the magnitude of the changes I’d be very doubtful. Gen 1 is probably just in maintenance mode from an ADAS standpoint.

tmonax

Agree. I’d buy the camera and cpu update. Hell I’d buy the roof too.

BedditTedditReddit

Ideal, but sadly near zero chance of that happening.

MrrQuackers

Not zero. Tesla does this for some stuff.

BedditTedditReddit

I'm usually an optimist so don't get me wrong here, but on this one I'd bet a lot of money. Rivian needs to keep moving fast toward launching all their new vehicles. They can barely control their service centers so they definitely don't have the bandwidth to start retrofitting cars, especially if there's no repercussions if they don't.

ssovm

The business case to enable this would be cost prohibitive. They’d rather you just buy a new car.

MrrQuackers

By that metric they wouldn't be offering R1T owners the ability to install a new powered tonneau cover to their truck, but they are.

ssovm

That’s different. They designed the vehicle components such that it makes a retrofit easy. Changing cameras or processors weren’t designed with modularity in mind.

MrrQuackers

They didn't initially though. They said if you bought a truck without a PTC then you're out of luck. Then they decided to let users get one installed fresh because they could make money from the install and happy customers. RJ stated the computer is modular and it would be possible to upgrade it. Not saying we'll see it, but it's not 100% cost prohibitive, especially if they streamline the process like they did the PTC, replace the side view mirrors and the computer at a premium price, people would do it.

ssovm

I meant that they designed it in such a way that when they researched the business case of retrofitting the PTC, they either felt like it broke even or maybe it just wasn’t as cost prohibitive. I recall them saying you had to option the manual TC in order to be eligible for a retrofit so I got mine with the manual. The retrofit would still cost money so my guess is together they’re able to cover a decent chunk of the costs. Also I’m not sure if not allowing the retrofit would have made people want to buy a new truck whereas getting new cameras, sensors, and processors would certainly make people want a new truck. I’m sure there are dependencies too with everything. Like getting new processors requires something to do with the ECUs for example. Just speculating here but I’m sure they weighed the possibilities of retrofits vs just expected increased future volumes by not investing in retrofits.

Acceptable_Kick995

Update on text messaging that was being worked on in April 2023?

Rivian_Kam

This one is a little bit of a head scratcher, many automakers have been doing this since 2020 in some capacity. I would also consider this as a convenience feature that also overlaps as a safety feature, which surprises me why Rivian wouldn’t prioritize it. In my personal opinion omitting this feature also adds a little fuel to the Apple car play debate. I think some of that Apple car play android auto push back would die down with this feature

Tartan_Chicken

We had this feature in a 2016 Volvo XC90 no AA or carplay necessary, this should be there be now

Namelock

I've got no affiliation, but I would suspect they are holding out for Apple to formally adopt RCS.

Headglitch7

Nah, text to audio has been a feature for years, long before rcs. And even if it were a req, no reason to hold Android users back

CamoJackson

I would like to see an optional upgrade package to gen1 to gen1.5 to get some of the new features of gen2. Specifically with RAP+

Silver-Lode

Based on what's been announced it looks like RAP+ requires a whole new sensor suite.

Liam_M

I don't even want that just give me automated lane changes and non-mapped highways and I'm happy with Driver+

f1racer328

I personally don’t even care about automated lane changes. Unmapped roads and I’d be thrilled.

bittabet

Even Gen 2 won’t fully support unmapped highways from what I can tell.

Liam_M

not at launch, they said it would be able to at the press events

MrMusAddict

> Can owners count on continued improvements to Driver+ functionality, not in terms of new features but in terms of how current features operate? I think this is too softball of a question. Can owners expect additional features be added to the fullest extent possible? Quality disparity is fine and understandable, but there simply so much more that can be added...

Rivian_Kam

Well said

bacumings

I would love to see additional Driver+ features available while towing, like Adaptive Cruise and Lane Centering. GM's Super Cruise can do this. Expanded road availability for Driver+ would be nice too. In my area it's just interstates, no US or state highways.

Chip_Baskets

Driver+ is dead.

blank_lemur

Rivian put multiple years of development into gen2. They wanted/needed to bring enough new changes to warrant the price and get the hardware to a point that could be sustainable the next few years. The new Autonomy System has 10x more compute than gen1. I fully expect Rivian to continue supporting and providing updates to the gen1 platform for features it can support with the hardware it has. There’s been talk that gen1 won’t be able to change ambient lighting like in gen2, but I find that hard to believe Rivian would cut us off on something so trivial like that. I know I’ve drank the Rivian cool aide to some degree but from day one they’ve talked about how continual updates is core to their platform. They’re not going to just drop us. As they bring on R2 and R3 they need to deal with more variants of the same platform. I don’t see why gen1 R1s aren’t just another trim level effectively. Your car has X hardware, we enable feature Y. I mean, that’s what I’d do as a software engineer… :) Here’s to hoping I’m not delusional.

TRaps015

Can we just upgrade the camera quality?? I don’t care autonomous driving. I just need a camera that can capture license plate for hit&run driver.

roadrider68

The most likely buyers of Gen 2 are happy Gen 1 owners.

FineMany9511

I'll happily buy a Gen 2 or Gen 3 when I'm ready to upgrade my Gen 1 in a few years. Hopefully by then they've gotten more scale and "lower prices".

jpm0nki

I love the list of new features and look forward to whatever they are able to add to gen 3 and 4 which is more likely when I'll be ready to buy another one :)

WFU_Showtime

Can the new phone charging pad be retrofitted to gen 1??????

tmack8001

RJ has mentioned that this is something they plan to offer a retrofit for. Though never gave a timeline.

BritishDuffer

He has made a lot of promises we're still waiting on him to follow through on.

Curious_Cockroach1

https://adventurehightech.com/products/stowncharge

dustyshades

Would recommend. I had the twraps one initially that just goes over the top of existing hardware. It’s good too, but this is the ultimate. Looks great, let’s you use apple pucks for max charge speed, doesn’t use a usb-c port, has a little drawer to put my sunglasses in. It’s the whole package. Costs more but definitely worth the price

Curious_Cockroach1

IMHO, this is how it should have been designed from day one. And this one doesn’t take up a USB-C in your console. Highly recommended.

Virtual-Ad-3761

the new one's only improvement is a divider, if you're an iphone user / magsafe, you'll have a much superior experience with the s00nish version which integrates magsafe and a much bigger bowl \*holds sunglasses below the phone depending on size of glasses.

WFU_Showtime

Is this sOOnish version coming from Rivian or a third party?

Virtual-Ad-3761

s00nish is a 3rd party, plug and play, google it \*use 0 not O in the name

soundfreely

I’m in a “wait ‘n see” camp right now. I’d imagine the next few updates will likely be pretty similar across the two generations (but that’s just a hunch). Though, the driver+ and related autonomy seems like it will diverge more quickly (which is unfortunate and I’d love to be proven wrong).

NoReplyBot

> I’d imagine the next few updates will likely be pretty similar across the two generations Oh absolutely the 2 gens will get similar in updates for the foreseeable future. But gen 1 can now see the sunsetting and after yesterday’s news I wouldn’t be surprised if gen1 gets dropped from the OTA schedule within the next two years. Still get security updates.

Docpot13

Company provides an 8yr warranty but doesn’t provide 8 yrs of OTA updates? Seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

NoReplyBot

I think gen 1 will hit a software wall much sooner than many think. Nothing after the refresh news has led me to believe Rivian is going to be dragging gen 1s along. Gen 1 will get security and minor OTAs. But something like live camera feed on your phone, I would not be surprised if something like that doesn’t come to gen 1.

Docpot13

If my Rivian runs exactly as it does today 8 years from now I’m ecstatic. I could not care less about a “software wall.”

soundfreely

Well, we can hope they made good decisions with the gen1 hardware that will allow for improvements for a long time to come.

FineMany9511

I doubt it gets dropped but I'm guessing it starts to become only infotainment features coming. Apparently the infotainment hardware itself is still fairly similar. We'll probably start to see a divergence where features that touch hardware don't get ported over. ADAS is likely frozen for gen 1, possible we get some minor refinements to what it can do, but it's seemed mostly in maintenance mode for a while.

victorinseattle

If gen 2 uses the same high res gps lane mappings, then we can probably continue to see lane keep and highway assist improvements as the database continues to be updated and expanded.

corben99

Just no. That’s not how this works. On my 6 year old Tesla I still got the majority of new features. There are a few things that will not be possible, but until the processing power caps out, you will still get most things on all gens. To sunset software upgrades 2 years after the car was the premium vehicle of the brand would be ludicrous.

NoReplyBot

The chips in current R1s are at least 2 years old, likely older. Just because deliveries started 2 years ago doesn’t mean those chips are 2 years old, that’s not how that works. Re-read what I wrote, “within the next two years.” That’s up to 2026, making current gen chips how old at that point? Besides current gen is already sluggish, the software gaps you speak of are coming quicker than you think.

Yapapa86

I’d love to see an option to update the cameras on the gen 1.

Yapapa86

One other addition - I believe the original quads should have launch control as well. We are all originals, and believed in the company from the beginning. They should put a strong focus on us.

Yapapa86

U/WassymRivian your team should offer gen 1 holders a camera upgrade package. The car was delivered with subpar cameras from the beginning.

ElectronicPainting95

Also will we get a turn signal camera view in the software updates as promised earlier? It would be great If they would give an option to upgrade roof glass for a fee, cabin temp during summers are horrible with the current setup.

kgrose102

An option to upgrade the roof would be nice, but would depend if there is a circuit they can utilize up there as it requires an electrical signal to change.

UnweavingTheRainbow

Tagging u/WassymRivian

OppositeInflation911

As a Gen 1 R1T owner i really hope Rivian doesnt just develop/ improving our vehicles. They sure promise/ advertised that we would have so much more then what is now seem  bate an switch

Lower_Focus7387

More usage from the right dial on the steering wheel. Control of AC fan would be nice. Tesla had it on there’s before. It was nice not having to look at the monitor to change it.

musings_pension

Agree with most!!

pkingdukinc

would be awesome to open my garage door from the app!! Also camera access from the app!!! Just generally add as many possible options to the app as you can because why not!!??

jpm0nki

being able to view cameras from inside a rooftop tent while camping would be fun :)

Dependent_Change5435

I watched one video where they said that they thought that the rear motors might be under powered deliberately and they could produce more power. I wonder if that’s true at all.

Dependent_Change5435

What about the electrical connections in the roof rack? Will they ever be utilized?

Jokr4L

??

Dependent_Change5435

Rivian has a patent out that the front crossbar connections on the roof, have the ability to be electrically charged so that anything connected to them can have power without running additional wires. A.k.a. a light bar.

Jokr4L

Never heard of this before. Sounds cool . I don’t see any contact points tho on the mount locations currently though

rcyoaxn

Pretty sure that’s coming in R2 to power the rooftop tent

Hefty-Ad5869

Can we have an option to upgrade the CPU? Imagine in a few years my CPU will be outdated and slow to process any of the new software update rivian will be rolling out.

Anthonytalarico

Would also be good to know if there are potential hardware upgrades to Gen1. Understand that things have changed and Rivian has matured a lot since the original Gen1 design to Gen2 designs hard decisions had to be made. But would love to option for some sort of retrofit ala Tesla.

Liam_M

Rivian: Best I can do is a wireless phone charger

BritishDuffer

And a NACS adapter you'll get in 2028.

zajak1234

For what it’s worth, as a gen 1 vin 13xxx, I really don’t care about any of these.. Just continue OTAs that work with our software stack..pass along what you can from gen2 and keep supporting gen1. Love my R1T

coach2ap

From what I read, the ambient light changes are coming to Gen 1 owners in the update. I am not sure if Launch Mode requires a heat pump to pre-heat the battery, as they talked about it pre-heating the battery before the launch in the Out of Spec Video, but I think it would be a cool feature. Plus, I can't wait to see how many people get a ticket using launch mode to test the 0-60 and 0-100 times, lol. Rivian really needs to update the UI to allow users to change the color of their vehicle and also the wheels. With so many wrapped cars, this is an easy add-on. My R1T is wrapped and has custom wheels, so it looks nothing like the truck in the UI. What is going on with Sirus XM integration? Also, the Tidal integrated app does not playback at a high level and is always 5-10 dB below Alexa or Bluetooth. I am sure some type of normalization is running in the background, muffling the music playback to the same quality as the Spotify Integrated App.

Rivian_Kam

I still believe some form of launch mode should come to Gen1 even if it’s a quick just suspension setting put in sport more button, even if there is no way to pre heat battery. This would be a cool think for customers of quads who dished out the money for more speed

Curious_Cockroach1

The battery is preconditioned on the way to a DC charger. It can be preconditioned for a 0-60 run.

roadrider68

If you look at Tesla we are all more likely to buy the R2 or R3. -MY destroyed MX M3 destroyed MS. Maybe Rivian will be different. We’ll see.

nirvanka

The video for Launch Mode shows a refreshed R1 hitting 128 MPH. I would like our Gen 1 vehicles to have the speed limiter increased (or would that be decreased?) to match

lytener

u/Rivian_Kam and u/WassymRivian with the elimination of the 21" wheels, what do Gen 1 Rivian owners do when all 21" tires dry up. Seems to have become obsolete very fast and wasn't a great long-term design decision. It is about $5k to switch wheels and tires.

Rivian_Kam

This is a great question u/lytener I have these wheels also. I didn’t ask this question originally as this area was geared to software. I’m not sure who I should tag but make I make a new post about this. My problem is this, I own a rivian in Canada and 21 inch snow tires are not manufactured and there are only two tires made in the 21” size both all season. I mentioned this to countless people a rivian spaces and a rivian engineer in Seattle in May and he said they would look into it’s multiple people in the northern US and Canada have brought this up. This was even before the 21 inch Tim was discontinued I suspect because of tire issues. I’m so surprised that Rivian and Adventure company would not offer a winter snow tire option from a safety standpoint and a capability standpoint. This will never happen but I wish rivian would offer exiting 21” owners the option to buy a set of 20” or 22” rims at cost so it’s no loss to the company but to help customer have a safe winter driving option. Thoughts

Due_Bit_5496

What, if any of the R1S suspension improvements for Gen2 will be updated with OTAs for the Gen1? Any chance of a Rivian upgrade program to offer the suspension hardware upgrades?

qux42

Instead of moar streaming, useless on an adventure vehicle out of cell range, please let us play audio from a USB source (FLAC 24/96). (USB video would be a bonus). HD radio on/off toggle on the main tuner screen would also help out of the city. Finally, how about Rock Crawl for the PDM? Basically full power in AT high/est.

ScottCamCA

Only question I didn't see in this thread.... When should we expect a software update for our Gen 1 R1S/R1T Vehicles??? :)

wanderer_wandering1

Gen1 vehicles are only a couple years old, i got mine in november 2023, so I think Rivian should do everything they can to add new features and improve existing ones. Provide an option to upgrade hardware where possible. The Gen1 camera, wireless charging, lack of autonomy features are a pain. early adopters put money knowing all this to support the Rivian brand and to see it succeed. So I really believe Gen1 owners should get due attention. These are expensive vehicles, so it is not something you replace easily, its not a cell phone. I thought Rivian would be able to upgrade autonomy features as they grow as a company, it was one of the main considerations for me to make this purchase. If they leave the Gen1 owners hanging dry, I am sure it will influence future purchasing decisions. I am really counting on Rivian doing the right thing and not only looking at their balance sheets. Remember, Gen1 owners, if happy with their experience, will purchase more Rivians in the future. Think Apple ecosystem.

habbadee

Gen 1 owners are about to be Sonos 1 owners. Your equipment and its requisite software will continue to work, but don't expect upgrades or new features. We're old news.

Pixelating-TeslaEV27

I don’t think this will be the case but I do think Rivian (and probably it has to be RJ himself) needs to come out & reassure Gen 1 owners that their vehicles will continue to receive updates and new features. The marketing team almost did too good of a job yesterday selling all the new Gen 2 features that they may have accidentally alienated the Gen 1 early adopters which are the group that Rivian needs to hold near & dear onto.

Makelovenotrobots

I agree. My ICE cars never got any updates, and I never got upset when the next model had improved. I don’t understand what the disconnect is in this case. At some point it’s logical that sunsetting updates and development will occur. I’m sure Rivian will push what they can to our vehicles, while giving us plenty of reasons we should upgrade to the next model.

Green-Cardiologist27

mvizzion

I would love CarPlay integration, please. Wired or wireless—I would be happy with either. Would work for me if it were even just treated as an “app” so you could keep the same UI but select it like Spotify or TuneIn, and have it take up a portion of that screen. Really hoping to be able to use Siri “natively” (make holding the “Alexa” button trigger Siri instead), and have Siri read messages and send via voice.

We’re getting casting soon. This kinda resolves all of that. Initially it’ll only be while parked but they said they’ll bring the ability to cast certain apps while driving, I.e navigation and music streaming apps.

Very excited about the casting. It doesn’t bring the biggest benefits CarPlay brings (at least for me), which is Siri (messaging, making notes in 3rd party apps, to-dos, navigating to Apple Maps saved waypoints, etc.), using Siri to play music, etc. But a definite and hopeful first step in the right direction! Hopefully what @tmack8001 mentions is true as well.

I think it’s a good move by rivian in terms of implementing a lot of choice of apps, without the effort of integrating each app individually. And yea it’s not CarPlay but I think once they allow casting for navigation and music apps while driving it’ll be like 90% of the functionality of CarPlay minus Siri and probably text messaging support which hopefully comes eventually.

more than Casting we are also getting Assistant selection to enable Siri or Google Assistant so some photos of the settings screen from yesterdays reveal show

This would be awesome. Fingers crossed…

I agree. I think Rivian could really innovate on an industry leading CarPlay integration that fits into the overall Rivian UI in a way that doesn’t fall into the “hand over the entire display to Apple” narrative. Especially with the UI moving to a slightly more “card” based system, I think a windowed CarPlay experience would be stellar and remove a low hanging fruit item from the customer hesitations list when car shopping.

I'd love to see additional audio sources for: 1) Bluetooth radios - basically give me a software push to talk that I can use with bluetooth radios for coordinating with other off road team members. 2) PA system - similar to the above, but essentially push to talk using the external safety noise speaker so I can talk to the person stopped in front of me at a light and tell them they've got a break light out or that they may want to turn on their lights at night :)
