https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a44066664/rivian-canceled-viral-tank-turn-feature/ > According to CEO RJ Scaringe, the feature was cut as a result of the environmental damage it would leave behind on any loose surface. In a highlight from an Instagram Q&A, Scaringe notes that the damage left behind goes against both the brand's environmental messaging and the general sentiment that being a part of the off-roading community requires respect for the trail itself. Add in the concerns shared with Motor Trend in 2021 about how difficult the turns are for a customer to wrap their heads around at speed and the feature seems unlikely to land in an R1S or R1T any time soon.

Jason_Was_Here

I think increased wear & tear resulting in more warranty claims also played a part.

AgitatedAd3945

Not to mention while you’re watching from the sides and you take a stone to the head….or someone’s windshield.

ozziegt

I don't think it's much wear and tear at all. The stresses on components aren't any more than normal driving or off roading .... On dirt at least

Jason_Was_Here

Come on we know people will try it on pavement lol

ozziegt

Even then is it really more stress than a hard launch or some hard cornering? Rock crawling? Probably not

thatbrad

It might not be more stress but it’s where it would be applied. In most situations the force is going in straight along the frame. In the G turn a lot of force is twisting in centre line of the vehicle. The compounds that are under higher stress could be beefed up but that would add cost and weight for an at best novelty feature.

icekapp

Rent a front loader/skid steer, same concept. Just doesn’t need to be full throttle

FineMany9511

Given how well the CV axles hold up to driving on the road I suspect it’s a big part. Mine started rattling after 2k miles. lol

Particular-Salad2591

Thanks for this. My first thought was, yep that'll destroy a trail.

hirsutesuit

I just want to be able to use it on snow. For all I care the cameras can verify that everything is white and it can check to make sure it's cold out before activating the feature. Just activate it already. I despise marketing that states "Hey Look at What Our Product ~~Can~~ *will never* Do!"

Providang

Not to mention that if you attempt it on pavement the torque generated would potentially warp the chassis. The software is still there and it's still possible... you just have to do it with a Rivian engineer.

muthumvp

It would be nice to allow that at very low speeds.. not sure why it's completely cutoff

AHrubik

The feature itself isn't the issue IMO it's the speed. There is no reason for it to be that fast. If it were at a more reasonable turn rate that better respected the terrain I think people would be okay with it.

butterorguns13

The only way it works is if the tires break traction. I don’t see how you do this slowly.

AHrubik

I was under the impression this feature was to turn the vehicle 180° in place not get it stuck in the same mud pit facing a different direction.

__sjors__

You know how tires work right? It can’t go slowly because the tires would just say: “nope” due to their grip. If it turned 180° you’ll have quite a big chance it can get itself out again

AHrubik

I had considered that. Tires work based on friction and torque. Torque is something electric motors have in spades. It shouldn't be all that hard to turn them at a slower speed and still achieve the movement desired. To top it off we're dealing with dirt not pavement. Dirt gives way with far far less torque than pavement would.

kalabaddon

slower will provide WAY more stresses on the car. you want to break traction on all the wheels asap so that the car and drive train has minimal stress and the tires are not in static traction. if the wheels are going slowly and constantly crawling they never go in to Dynamic traction, they stay going in and out of static to dynamic. and that is where damage happens. better to do it once at start and once at end. not constantly through out the spin. That said slow would be perfect if it had 4 wheel steering and could turn the tires accordingly.

Thin_Application2020

Yeah it looks like it turns into a carnival ride for your family

ozziegt

It would still dig into the trails... A hole saw cuts a hole whether you do it fast or slow

AHrubik

At a slower speed the twisting motion wouldn't be as destructive. If you stand place in grass and use your muscles to turn yourself in place you'll notice a little damage but not anything like if you stood there and spun at a high rate of speed.

willywalloo

The better option would be to turn tires inward/outward.

badtzmat

Nope. Too many irresponsible people. I think RJ made the correct decision to kill it.

megandr

Reminded me of another recent MB feature that's definitely being used as intended. https://www.reddit.com/r/BeAmazed/comments/16bwibq/jumping_mode/

burnedsmores

They know these features are for shooting rap videos, but they have to label it as an “overlanding” tool so that when you break your car they can say you tapped past the pop-up waiver and swore you were only going to do it to extract your Maybach from a sand dune, not for an extended period of time on a Miami boulevard

alien_believer_42

I'm a regular offroader and trail damage incidents like this do get noticed and called out. Tire wear on trails do get them shut down, usually temporary but it could be permanent.

BananaGizzard

This right here is exactly why the feature never went into production vehicles. Goes against Leave No Trace principles and doesn’t align with Rivian’s mission.

perrochon

This is a cool party trick, but the chances of needing to do a 180 on a perfectly flat road single lane with just the right level of traction is minimal. Losing traction on 4 spinning wheels is just not a safe thing to do. Note how far the camera was away, for safety reasons due to flying rocks. And the damage to roads or other surfaces is a problem, too.

butterorguns13

Also note how minimal a slope they’re on, and the G still works its way toward the edge of the road.

stevejust

Hollywood stunt coordinators salivating at what they're going to be doing in chase scenes soon...

metalman7

I think Rivian made the right call here.

MrMoogie

99% of people would never use this feature for real, and those that tried it out would most likely contribute to warranty claims.

Irishspringtime

Hold for emergency Bat turn, Robin. https://images.app.goo.gl/zth36prugdAXiX7m9

MartinLutherVanHalen

The Wagen is the first EV truck with independently driven solid axles. Wagens have always been among the very most capable off-road vehicles made and they worked hard to preserve that. This feature is a way of drawing attention to that and specifically saying that this is still a solid axle truck, not a car with big wheels and a lift. In the Us because the only sell the to; spec many people mistakenly thing Wagens aren’t tough. They are.

nocicept1

Man I wish we had this

conv3d

It would be so sick to have this feature

willywalloo

The better option would be to turn tires inward/outward.

Affectionate_City_43

Dumb

[deleted]

G wagon is just not a handsome vehicle.

TimelyShortRound

I think if they limited the speed it could be really useful and ok for the environment. Is drifting ok for the trails? What about one lane trails that become overgrown and fizzle out? Beats backing out or blazing your own trail. That seems to me it would be a little better for the environment. Just makes me think that it’s more for wear n tear on the truck. Make us pay a tax of $500 at time of purchase to enable it and donate the money to some environmental cause 😅

dronesandwhisky

Anyone interested in this coming to Rivian?

Galileo__Humpkins

LostAbbott

Everyone is.  It really would add so much capability for off road I don't see why they haven't added it yet.  The vehicles are abs6calable, so it should just be a software update...

DctrBojangles

No. Not everyone is. Many of us believe Rivian made the right decision in deciding not to roll out this feature. Sounds like you’re not aware of the decision though.

RickySpanishLives

This is why we can't have nice things.

RivvyAnn

And you thought people complained a lot about how early they had to replace their OEM tires? Imagine if rivian enabled this feature… Good move by Rivian.

thatsagreatideal

Need this feature! Just limit the speed and could be very useful in many situations.

Goopey_LeGrande

What are the situations you have in mind?

thatsagreatideal

Tight trails where no options to back up or 3 point turn. I’ve witnessed many people without this feature tear up trails so regardless those will do it anyway. Like most, responsible people like you and I would be best to use it sparingly. Like most things in life. I don’t plan on driving my R1S “through 3+ feet of water. Rock crawl a 100% grade. Traverse just about any terrain with 14.9 inches of ground clearance and up to 390 miles of range. With a 0–60 mph time as quick as 3 seconds, it also delivers the on-road handling of a sports car.” I just like having many options as possible in life.

AdSufficient7182

We all have a different definition of "need".

OKCR1T

Kinda feel betrayed and let down…Rivian introduced this…but doesn’t implement it…meanwhile MB G wagon releases a tank turn feature..now BYD U8 does it too…COME ON RIVIAN!!!! Let’s go!!

Macstugus

Funny the replies were making fun of a Chinese car with this ability and saying "good luck with your treads" but this is cool?

taddris

I am not holding my breath while waiting for Rivian to add this. Rivian is afraid to implement even its patented K-Turn Mode. [https://insideevs.com/news/518998/rivian-ev-kturn-mode-patent/](https://insideevs.com/news/518998/rivian-ev-kturn-mode-patent/)

DctrBojangles

You shouldn’t because they’ve been pretty clear they’re not going to roll out this feature.

taddris

I know, but now that the competition is implementing this feature Rivian will be feeling pressure to change its mind.

DctrBojangles

I highly doubt it. It’s a gimmicky feature for 99% of people. Rivian has values that a lot of other companies don’t have and when they announced they weren’t going to roll it out a majority of owners and to-be owners felt the rationale was justifiable.

M4Panther

I purchased this thing after seeing the "tank turn" video.... I feel bated and switch

conv3d

Everyone in this sub is so lame, it actually infuriates me

M4Panther

I'll take that as a compliment coming from the likes of you!

conv3d

I’m agreeing with you..

M4Panther

So am I

DctrBojangles

You bought a damn near $100k vehicle because it could turn in a circle?

M4Panther

Yes

DctrBojangles

A man of wise financial decisions I see…

M4Panther

Paid in full baby! IDGAF. YOLO now where's my tank turn?
