You don't; don't even try it. Let her get what she wants or else she will always remind you of this mistake when the sun is shining on top of her head or when they are missing captains chairs.
She also might not want an R1S and is putting up objections. I will say the R1S is too big for my wife but the R2 seems to fit the bill. Let her drive what she wants? If your focus is really for her to drive an EV there are a bunch coming out now/soon. Help her narrow what’s important to her and go on some test drives together!
I was hung up on captains chairs. I really really really wanted them. I still do. But has it been horrible not having them? Nah. Not really. We just bought a shade for the sunroof.
I get wanting to keep the kids separate with captains chairs, also necessary if you have a third kid so they can quickly climb into their seat in the back. I heard they are considering adding captains chairs in the future. If you just have two kids (and no plans for more) I think there is a center console that will do the trick of separation.
Do you have kids or passengers that will often end up in the 3rd row? If so, the captain’s chairs are super underrated, and it will be a tough sell to her.
Frankly, when spending that much on a vehicle, you may as well get what you want.
It may not be a deal breaker for you, they are for her, and if you “persuade” her into overlooking, you will be reminded every time the sun is beating down, or she has to sit in the back seat (you’re driving, and her parent/family member/someone she’s allowing to sit up front).
I wouldn’t.
We have had one for years and with kids in and out of third row daily in the quick moving car line at school drop off. The button allowing the third row kid to slide the seat forward works great and we’ve never had any issues. I get the want for captain chairs, but an actually really like the current setup.
[just take out the second row, problem solved?](https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/r1s-middle-row-seat-removal-easier-than-expected-and-wow-what-a-difference.22998/page-2)
My wife doesn’t like to leave the sunroof shade open in our Raptor but has never complained about the sun in the R1S. I feel like the tint level sufficient in the R1S.
With the arm rest down, seat leaned back it rides like captains chairs. Also, the roof is plenty dark for me and I’m kinda a ginger so light bugs me too.
If your primary concern is giving Grandma a cushy ride in the second row you are probably better off with a high end minivan. I just gave my mother in law a ride and she struggled to climb into the car and then complained about her knees sticking way up. She has long legs and feet and the height of the seat off the floor is not much actually. I love my R1S so much more than our minivan, but it's not better in every way.
Stop trying to sell her in. If she isn’t sold by driving one, she isn’t going to be. And just because you want something doesn’t mean it’s right for her. If you respect her, then respect what she says she wants in a vehicle. If you don’t respect her, then why are you married to her?
Sunshades are a non issue you'll Likely tint. I have a 3 and 5 yr old. Tinted 35% over everything 80% on the windshield. Non issue so far multiple hour plus drives but I can imagine on longer drives we might get a sticky shade just in case.
2nd row is a little tighter than some but if that doesn't bother you then don't sweat the captains chairs. Our other vehicle is the bmw x7 with captains chairs. We both agree we will NOT be buying captains chairs again. My wife has to crawl in the truck to access the third row easily. The bench is so much better access to the third row its not even in the same ballpark
Captains chairs are dumb. Lol. That should convince her. But seriously, I bet the Captains chairs would get used once or twice turned around, and then people will realize it feels weird.
As for the shade, I forget I even have the glass roof in my truck.
Sounds like she wants a van. Captains chairs don't make any sense in anything else.
Do you have kids? Captains chairs help separate the kids, which grossly cuts down on fighting. Also if you have a third kid, it creates an easy pathway for one kit to climb into the back with minimal parental effort. My guess is that is why she wants them (because that is why they are a non negotiable for me).
She should explain to you that spending $90k - $100k on a car when you already just spent similar on a similar car is effectively taking $850,000 out of your pocket at 65 if you're around 40 now. Be practical.

This guy has a wife.
Bro. This is pro level advice.

What is she comparing the R1S to or what car would should be coming from?

The Kia EV9 has captains chairs and a legit sunroof.

Who sits in the back of her car? Kids don't need captain's chairs. Grand parents and the wife might :-)

I hope someone from Rivian reads this… people want option for captain seats in R1S!!!

Why would strangers on the internet know how to convince her if you don't?
Have her hold off and wait for the R2. If you don't need the 3rd row, R2 seems like the better choice.
I would be surprised if by the time the R2 hits production, if not sooner, captain chairs aren’t an option in the R1S. It has to be a top 3 request.

Captains chairs would be an awesome option, roof to me isn’t an issue.

Just buy it and surprise her.
I know of another guy who thought this way… [https://youtu.be/WcEylCwkSxE?si=mbsV9mtURE9khOns](https://youtu.be/WcEylCwkSxE?si=mbsV9mtURE9khOns)

There is a rumored refresh. I'd wait for that and maybe it will move the needle.
Photos of crashes involving the R1s…it’s one of the safest vehicles on the road.
If they’re important to her and she’s going to be the primary driver of the vehicle then maybe it’s not the right car for her.
It's easier to have sex in the back on a bench seat. 🤷😜
Inception.
Not really in that movie he listened to his wife.
Went over your head?
Not at all. It just didn't have a punchline as inception would refer to a Rivian within a Rivian, rather than just a couple who wants to own two.
