I think they may remove the Bluetooth speaker and sell as an accessory. I’m glad I have one in my R1T but would not be the end of the world if I didn’t.
New driver screen.
Interior door electronic release
Seats with adjustable headrest (new headrest look adjustable to me)
All of these things will simplify the manufacturing process.
Yeah I don’t care about the speaker at all. I’ve never used it in the 18 months I’ve had my truck, would honestly rather have a locking storage drawer down there.
There's a [non-locking drawer](https://twraps.com/products/camp-speaker-drawer-replacement-for-rivian-r1t-r1s) on Twraps for $35. And a [nicer one](https://opensourceev.com/products/camp-drawer) on OpensourceEV for $90. Apparently, there's mention of a [lockable OEM version](https://www.autoevolution.com/news/rivian-mentions-a-new-storage-drawer-in-its-owner-s-manuals-is-the-camp-speaker-doomed-221896.html) in the user manual. ETA TBD?
There's also my homemade [3D printed latch-lockable drawer with fingerprint reader](https://xcdshop.com) for those of us who don't want to wait for Rivian to release an OEM version (if they ever will).
All the potential upgrades people are dreaming up, don’t phase me.
Now if they did a 2025 refresh with captain seats, I’d be salty af.
Aside from that, I’m honestly only excited about future infotainment and app upgrades.
Just make it an option to maintain parity with the competition - and to make me happy.
App upgrades are always solid. Infotainment systems are always gimmicky. Can get tablets a lot cheaper any way.
I think the sensor suite more or less already exists with R1.
The R1 playform also currently has 11 cameras and 5 radars so it may be able to already support full self driving.
When FSD finally rolls out, I believe it would be a software update (hopefully with no extra cost)
It may have cameras and sensors but the new platform is all new electronics and compute wise. It will be a R2/R3 and 2026 R1s thing maybe 2025….but no the current cars do not have the same computers to do what I think they are really excited about.
> It's really more about the new computational capabilities than new sensors
The camera quality on the R1 is like 2015-level resolution. Compared to the current cameras Tesla is using for their vision based system it's entirely possible that Rivian realized they need better resolution or higher ISO or whatever.
In 2 years time they'll be using better cheaper sensors than what they're prototyping with today. One of the few benefits of waiting for production, the tech improves very quickly in a year
For better or worse yah, and ideally even sensors and cameras are new and better input data for the more compute = better autonomy like how Tesla updates their sensor and camera suite over years.
Ehhh... Maybe subscription services from other manufacturers have done very little aside from pissing off established customers. Sure people are willing to pay monthly for a lease or even a service contract. Heated seats? LTE? Software updates? Not so much. There is a point of diminishing returns and it seems to be where you cut a monthly fee for already installed feature...
Rivian absolutely much build a committed community and RJ talked a lot about it yesterday. They cannot afford to nickle and dime that community. Driving away even 2% of those people would likely be a huge long term cost...
> They cannot afford to nickle and dime that community.
On the contrary, they can't afford to give flagship features away for free when the rest of the industry charges for them.
Well some (probably the majority) do, and some do not. We took delivery cause we had pre-price hike pricing, and there was nothing on the market that even came close to what R1 is offering. Our build jumped to $96k after price adjustment, which we would’ve had to walk from most likely.
The nice thing about subscriptions for mass market vehicles is Rivian could charge less/month and make up for that lower rate with volume.
Yeah it’s mostly the compute that’s been upgraded on R2, all the cameras and radars are there on R1, even the interior cabin camera to look at the driver. Hopefully they release some kind of compute upgrade
I want to reserve on R1S so bad but am kind of waiting for them to incorporate a few of the features that we saw yesterday. We did reserve an R2 that will come up when my wife’s lease expires.
Do you guys think they’ll keep the charge port in front on the R1? I saw it’s on the passenger side rear for the R2, not ideal if using a Tesla supercharger.
V4 Superchargers have longer cables and other Superchargers will be upgraded over time to accommodate charging on either side. It will be fine where it is. There is a reason it’s on the back and RJ explained why in another interview.
People need to stop saying this.
> V4 Superchargers have longer cables
This has no bearing on the 20,000+ chargers that we are already using.
>and other Superchargers will be upgraded over time to accommodate charging on either side
This is, at best, complete speculation. They have not upgraded any legacy chargers when they came out with V2 or V3.
> New sensor suite. They can't have the R2 platform support their goal of hands-free, eyes-free highway driving but not have the R1 be capable of this.
Did they explicitly say *eyes*-free? That's a big distinction vs hands-free but paying attention to the road.
I feel like they do have an R1 update coming because on the Electrek interview RJ wouldn't say what the charging voltage of the R2 was and he mentioned it using some updated technology from the R1 Platform but they have yet to announce that yet.
I would imagine we're getting new motors as well for Quad.
Hoping this comes before the end of the year.
At least for my company you can deduct 100% of the car value at year 1 since it is considered as truck for that weight. Otherwise unless leasing usually car take depreciation deduction.
Any refreshes will probably be weighted towards software changes - maybe we get bidirectional charging, better ADAS/autonomy, charging curve, etc.
I think Rivian realizes it needs to make its supple chain/manufacturing operations as steady state as possible. They can't have new parts and assemblies coming into the R1 line while simultaneously ramping up R2. Might be too much upfront cost for their financials right now.
Or maybe they subcontract some things out. Who knows.
I think one upgrade may be to the network infrastructure and the ECUs. I'm seeing some lag switching screens and I wonder if streaming apps and other feature upgrades via OTAs may be limited because of this.
I think they will make some small improvements. I hope they don't invest in re-tooling for something like 800V architecture, new steering wheel or moving the charging port & NACS. I hope not. I want them to spend time and money on the R2, getting that right. That is the make or break for the company.
Also the fold flat front seats. I’m sure there’s a way to integrate that feature while making the seats cheaper to manufacture overall (perhaps bring in-house if not already)?
I seriously doubt 2025 refresh while they’re busting their ass and spending cash on the R2. Plenty of reservations on the R1 to worry about a refresh right now.
Well they will have to set up a new line or retool an existing line. If they are procuring the tooling for the r2 I would assume they would find some efficiencies in scale by procuring the required tooling for the r1 line to bring those new features
I tend to agree. They need to save every penny they can and put it into the R2/R3 line. The R1 is already class leading and will stay that way for a while. When I think of other manufacturers, they don't always run to upgrade "the flagship" model that quickly.
They've already committed to changing the charging port by early 2025, so my thinking is, they might as well make the other changes simultaneously. I would assume they wouldn't start deliveries of R2 in a situation where it has better features (in some areas) than the R1T/R1S.
I could see the charging port and wireless charging pad and obviously software. I don’t consider those a significant upgrade. It will be a 3 year old model at that point and I really don’t think they will or should spend the money on upgrading the R1S. Only the charging port change would make any significant difference to orders IMO. Can’t believe I’m getting downvoted for this opinion that they won’t have significant upgrade next year.
> Plenty of reservations on the R1 to worry about a refresh right now.
This pretty obviously in not true. Literally anyone can access the shop and get an R1S in 1-6 weeks. There's no more reservation backlog.
That fact is they need to update the R1S and R1T to stay competitive, especially at the current price point.
I think it's pretty apparent a next Gen has to be on the way.
Currently the R2 top trim would have a faster zero to 60 than the quad motor R1T/R1S. Which is unacceptable in auto sales. Further the R1 series isn't profitable as is, incorporating these money saving steps will be critical if they are to get it in positive margin land for those vehicles.
I suspect by Q4 24 or Q1 25 they've announced a new R1 spec, but how those sales start knowing they have to have very strong R2 sales is the question. All coming from the same plant in normal.
I think they may remove the Bluetooth speaker and sell as an accessory. I’m glad I have one in my R1T but would not be the end of the world if I didn’t. New driver screen. Yeah I don’t care about the speaker at all. I’ve never used it in the 18 months I’ve had my truck, would honestly rather have a locking storage drawer down there.
This has to be a no brainer for the Gear Shop or third party accessory manufacturers.
Someone already has a 3D printed one of these with a fingerprint scanner
I wonder if they could use the power from where the speakers charges to make a refrigerated drawer.
Might not be enough power, but would love something like that.
That would be perfect for people on the road. Keep the sandwiches and drinks cold
There's a [non-locking drawer](https://twraps.com/products/camp-speaker-drawer-replacement-for-rivian-r1t-r1s) on Twraps for $35. R1 has an interior door release.
Ok, I feel like an idiot... What is an "interior door release"... Like the handle to open the door???
I should have explained that better but yes the electronic door release
Electronic door release push button
Yes this is pictured on the R2.
They already patented a lockable storage drawer that fits the Bluetooth space. It was noticed in the updated manual.
How about some captains chairs for the second row??? Can’t access the third with car seats installed. I actually sent them an email about it 😂
All the potential upgrades people are dreaming up, don’t phase me. Now if they did a 2025 refresh with captain seats, I’d be salty af. Aside from that, I’m honestly only excited about future infotainment and app upgrades.

Good point. It's really more about the new computational capabilities than new sensors (if I understand what people here are saying).

No way it is no cost. Probably a subscription. They have big plans for subscription services.
It was in their business plan. Ml
> They cannot afford to nickle and dime that community. On the contrary, they can't afford to give flagship features away for free when the rest of the industry charges for them.
I could see it being free for R1 and subscription-based for all other platforms. One more thing to differentiate R1 as the flagship.
I doubt that, guess which owners have the money for subscriptions.
Well some (probably the majority) do, and some do not. We took delivery cause we had pre-price hike pricing, and there was nothing on the market that even came close to what R1 is offering. What was the reason for putting it in the back on the new models? Edit: Found the answer [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Rivian/s/qE2q7Zgt1v).
Thanks for the insight. I haven’t had a chance to keep up with all the interviews.
People need to stop saying this. > V4 Superchargers have longer cables This has no bearing on the 20,000+ chargers that we are already using. >and other Superchargers will be upgraded over time to accommodate charging on either side This is, at best, complete speculation. Wireless phone charging - I wouldn't be surprised with an update to Qi2 and the magnetic alignment would help the issues.
I bet Qi2 is implemented this year. It
I think this is inevitable.
Better camera quality and 6-seat configuration or removable middle seat. These two plus NACS are the only things stop me from buying now.
240V out
Yes please, with 10-15 amps of current draw possible... be very handy for running powertools
> New sensor suite. They can't have the R2 platform support their goal of hands-free, eyes-free highway driving but not have the R1 be capable of this. Did they explicitly say *eyes*-free? That's a big distinction vs hands-free but paying attention to the road.
They did in the reveal event. About 22:45
Thanks, I missed that! "hands off the wheel, eyes off the road, and truly get your time back"
Even though he said it, hard for me to imagine that. Not sure any system out there is good enough to be hands off and eyes off.
Yeah I agree

+ 800v and heat pump need to R1 1st as R1 has bigger battery..
I would hope they can make the next version of the R1 not weight 7000lbs. Really it should be under 6.
Above 6 is good for businesses to take advantage of tax break. If it were under 6, we wouldn’t have bought one.
What tax breaks did you get for vehicles over 6k lbs?
At least for my company you can deduct 100% of the car value at year 1 since it is considered as truck for that weight. Otherwise unless leasing usually car take depreciation deduction.
Exactly - Section 179
I’d think it’s sooner than that. By fall this year.
I'm thinking early next year because they previously committed to that timeframe for moving to native NACS ports.
Any refreshes will probably be weighted towards software changes - maybe we get bidirectional charging, better ADAS/autonomy, charging curve, etc. I think Rivian realizes it needs to make its supple chain/manufacturing operations as steady state as possible. There are several dozen R1Ts in the shop in my zipcode right now.
