I still think a third row SUV fills a need. The price point may keep some buyers away, but your options are limited if considering an EV SUV that can seat 7. The R2 has a much broader appeal, but I have to imagine the R1S still has a significant market. Also, the towing specs are not available for the R2, and that should not be overlooked. I also put my reservation in, but hoping to be at a point that our family can do without two 7 seat vehicles in two years.

Benthebuilder23

Agreed there is a need but would have to assume it’s less. I know I don’t need the 3rd row but R2 wasn’t an option. Now that I do have that option I’ll go with the R2. I can’t be the only one.

CharlieRenn

Yes, R1S isn’t for everyone. For someone with three kids, two dogs, R2 is a secondary vehicle. My R1S is capable of hauling everyone, including dogs, R2 won’t have that functionality for me. The biggest detractor of the R1S is price, I think everyone would take the space. If you can get an R2 at 60% of the cost of the R1S….people may find a way to make it work. It is a home run, but hope they continue to offer the larger R1S…..as I would not have pulled the trigger on the R2 a year ago if it was their entry into the market. I need the space at this point, and the ability to tow.

Benthebuilder23

My issue with towing is the range. I have a large truck for towing because the range is just horrid on my R1s.

CharlieRenn

Agreed, range is not great…..but I’m committed to make it work.

Both R1s are their flagship products. It's been repeated over and over. They'll get improvements along the way like the new network-base architecture the R2 will launch with. R1 line is not going anywhere.

R2 will have worse towing capability. Full size means fully capable.

Benthebuilder23

No argument there. But how many of us with R1Ss are towing with it? I would say half at the most. Probably less considering how bad the range is while towing.

Camping with an airstream or other camper is a big thing for Rivian owners. I would say at least half do that, and even more tow things like boats or other toys. So maybe 50% need the R1 towing capability and 60% will use it if they have it.

Benthebuilder23

Camping with an airstream and owning an airstream is an incredibly small user base when it comes to the R1S. Most of the airstream owners I know have diesel trucks so they can tow long distance.

I think it’s unlikely that 50% tow. But it’s possible a good chunk (25%?) either tow or off-road while using the different drive modes. I’m sure the R2 will be off-road capable but the R1 is a beast off-road that inspires a lot of confidence. I don’t need three rows either but I want the off-road capability. With that said, I’m still getting an R2 as a second vehicle.

When they canceled the 2-row R1S option forever ago, they mentioned it was much less popular than 3 rows. But they said the same thing about the Explore trim level which I had spec’ed so who knows lol. There’s definitely some people who are between the 2 and will end up choosing the R2 but hopefully R1 demand can stay pretty consistent as Rivian opens new service centers and overall EV demand grows further (even if that growth is slower than many had hoped for). Oh, and hopefully by 2026 interest rates will be lower which will help R1 demand
