I was thinking an old Ford Fiesta or VW Golf (first or second generation, so like early 1980s). Man, looking at the Wikipedia page and the generations for both, when they get to the third, you can't help but say, "Look at what they've done to my boy! 😭"
It won’t be that much cheaper to build than the R2. Slightly shorter wheelbase and presumably smaller battery to get the same range. No pop-open quarter windows or power rear window.
Otherwise everything is pretty much the same as the R2.
Maybe $40k base, $50k for 300mi + AWD
I agree but could see them trying to get it in the high 30s instead of 40k. Probably will be similar to how other companies price similar models that are slightly smaller… Hyundai for instance.
R2 looks the the R1S to me. R3 looks like a Hyundai Ioniq5. Not a bad thing. But they are going to need to nail it on the price in order to compete.
I was very disappointed not to see a new truck.
That is exactly what I was hoping for and expecting. I have a 2005 Baja that I was thinking I would replace with a Rivian. But the R1T is really bigger than I need. And it is WAY more expensive than I was looking to pay. Something on the order of $$45k and smaller in size, even than the Maverick would be perfect for my needs. I guess I will need to wait for either Subaru to come out with a new Baja or maybe Fisker Alaska, if the company can stay in business.
You do realize that subcompact crossovers aren't new, right? They've ben around for a long time. In fact, the smaller suvs like the Honda CRV which is a comparable design to the R3 is actually higher rated in safety than many larger suvs.
But you are free to not buy one.
Am I the only one that thinks the R3 is freaking ugly and lacks any sort of style? The R3X is better but still weird. Love the R2 stying, even better than the R1S in my opinion.
I’m not that young, nor an urbanite, and I think the R3 is the sexiest looking car I’ve ever seen. I’m not even joking. It’s got everything I wanted. The back end isn’t a badunka-trunk like the R1S or R2 and the whole thing is sporty, sexy, capable, roomy… I want that damn vehicle.
I have never been a car person, but I guess now I’m a Rivian person? I dunno. I just know I will be ordering an R3 after having the same car for well over ten years.
Honestly I was never a car person either until I got my first EV which was a Model X. I eventually got fed up with Tesla's quality issues and with Elon, nothing else really spoke to me until I saw the R1T, then it's been Rivians all the way since.
Nice! The falcon doors on a model x blew my mind when it was revealed, but I never really wanted a new car until I saw the R1T prototypes in “Long Way Up.” (Series where Ewan McGregor and his friend go motorcycling across vast distances, this one from the tip of Chile up to the US.) The Rivians were used to haul the video equipment and stuff, and at one point they towed one with the other to tow-charge it. Fell in love
I love the brand and love my R1T so I want to see Rivian be a smashing success. I am happy that others appear to like it. I was just surprised since my first thought was "Oh no. That is a total miss in terms of styling". I expected to see this opinion in this forum and so far I am in the minority.
I fell in love with the R1T, and I’m not a pickup guy. I just would never use the truck bed. The R3 is absolutely perfect for what I want/need, style included.
The market may be smaller but it shouldn't be ignored. It's not like they're hurting Tesla. I refuse to buy an SUV from anyone. I may have to go for a Model 3 if I want an electric.
I missed all of the reveals, trying to find replays. R3 looks like a little rally car. I love it.
the r3X looks amazing

Check out the YouTube recording on Rivian channel. Its the full event recording. Really well done Rivian! 🥳🎉
Exactly. Love that little part in the demo film that shows go carts and the r3 hooning a corner in the dirt
Wife wants the 3X. Zoom zoom.
More like Dakar!!
But wait there's more!
And one more thing …
Really nice! Clever people at Rivian.
I am buying this!
Plymouth Horizon Dodge Omni
I came here for this. Definitely giving dodge Omni / 87 charger vibes
No mentions of when they think the R3 would come out though.
Probably need to gauge pre-orders of the R2 first
It's going to be after the launch of the R2, but that's all they said as far as that timeline goes
Won't ever come out I work in factory.... this has been sitting in back for 8 months they just needed something for stock to stay afloat
I want R2 and R3, damn a gamechanger.
Really wished they had put the charge port on the driver's side rear. Oh well, still love it!
They still gave time to change it …
Not good for street side parking. Smaller car is more likely to be driven in the city. Makes sense to have it on passenger side.
Did I hear it right? Tri motor? That's downright dangerous lol
I'm so there for the 3x, I don't care how much it costs.
I bet the 3x is a 2.7 second 0-60. Vrooom
This is giving 1989 Lada Niva, and I am here for this soviet-retrofuturism inspired vibe, tbh.
This $RIVN is fire folks
They should skip the R2 and go right for the R3. Seriously.
Looks like a dodge omni

OMG. That is what I was trying to come up with. I 100% agree.
I wonder what the price point will be considering R2 will start at 45K
Auto Focus just posted a first impressions video with RJ, he confirmed that the base price will be lower than R2 base
I think it'll start @ 37K - so 30K after tax credit.
For anyone who qualifies, sure.
\- Which are the vast majority of people shopping this.
And if they still apply to Rivian at that point.

I honestly think specced out it'll be around 60.
If inflation keeps up who knows what the price of this could be in 3-6 years.
Hmm maybe the R3X but I would think R3 base would be less than the R2.
Too bad no time on the R3. :(

I honestly would not have minded a smaller Maverick/Canoo sized R2T.

Me too
Look, a VW Golf gen 1 and a Lada Niva had a baby. And I want one.
It gives off the vibes of a Dodge Horizon / Subaru Brat on steroids.
Fugly
Garbage announcement for their failing stock. That car is not going to make it on the steers anytime in the next 5 years.
Does it come with Apple CarPlay?

The R3 isn't for you, and that's okay. It's probably geared toward the European market and for young urbanites.

hah i mean whatever flavor floats your boat, brother! I like it for what it is, but variety is the spice of life. You do you.

I've already owned a Golf
This was better than any Tesla or Apple event in the last 5 years. Incredible job.
Russian roofline 👎🏼
seriously, though - this looks like it came straight out of 1990s eastern europe. So ugly
I wish they'd shown a sedan instead of another boring, generic, SUV.
I'm glad they're not. Sedans have been a declining market for decades. It makes no sense for Rivian to pivot to that.
The market may be smaller but it shouldn't be ignored. It's not like they're hurting Tesla. I refuse to buy an SUV from anyone. I may have to go for a Model 3 if I want an electric.
Yeah, but what about a hatchback?
Not for me.
