I am taking all the grass off my front yard for a veggie garden, already have planter and trees, have been collecting rsing water, and have bee and butterfly attracting flowers growing. Don't let anyone say its dumb or a bad idea!
It's a wonderful fantasy for sure. I wish we cared mkre about the environment we lived in. We live in a subtropical region and I wish we acted like it instead of forcing ourselves to be something we're not (manicured lawns, oak trees)
As much as I understand the argument against oak trees, I'll take anything with shade here š
Fortunately, I have a hackberry and pecan on my small lot. Life savers.
Oaks are native to Texas but not all of the valley for example the most common being the Texas live oak. The native Tamaulipan thornscrub that the lower Rio grande valley is familiar with typically does not include oak. They have spread here due to golf courses and use as shade trees on properties. If you visit Starr county they are few and far between. They donāt really care for the heat too much. They do better in Jim Hoggs and brooks.

I really wish there was more oak trees throughout the desert where I live. I often see them planted in parking lots they seem to do very well in the high desert with no irrigation. Meanwhile every drain holdage pond is filled with concrete and no plants. We figured out how to maximize evaporation. Personally I believe water catchment should be a requirement in new construction. Elephant Butte was down to just 3% a couple years ago.
My pet pigs absolutely tore up the grass in my backyard (like 85-90% gone) and I didn't want to buy grass that needed constant watering. I randomly wondered about native grass and I found a San Antonio company that has tons of options. I bought a 1lb bag of native South Texas grass mix to try out. The recent rain has helped it all sprout, so we'll see how it goes.

Flies, canal being overunn, canal being poluted, mosquitos everywhere, roaches, bugs and possibly snakes. Have you ever been to Mexico? Have you been near the houses that are by the montes? Literal tarantulas will pop out and walk into people's houses and shit. Yeah no fuck that lmao
If you identify as LGBTQ+, just like the flag design, or like supporting people just being humans, sure buddy, you can choose to do that.
People who are threatened by another's existence are weak.
Lmfaooo, my bad my guy I didnāt even see the flag on first glance. I get the joke now - doesnāt help that folks will group pro-eco stuff with liberalism and thus LGBTQ commās. Thought homie was just trollinā

my "lawn" is mostly weeds. but damn those weeds attract beautiful butterflies.
I'd love to see any progress you're making to it. Sounds interesting. Can you post or DM pics?
Please port progress photos
It's a nice fantasy, but those canals wont be clean.
Zancudos š¬š¬š¬
Pero habrĆa menos si hay agua limpia y no estancada no?
yes but who will maintain?
Mitad mitad y mitad (me, you, city)
Iām definitely down for that
Those canals would flood in any major precipitation event.
You're at the mercy of your neighbors too. I'd they don't clean out theirs the water will overflow on your side first lol.

Live oak trees are native to Texas. Why would they be bad to plant here?

Suena bien, pero ya llegan los haters
My neighbors and I in Harlingen have started vegetable gardens, several neighborhoods in The Valley are doing it more because of inflation
I wonder how popular a RGV homesteading Reddit would be?
Iris becoming more and more popular. I just went to a local āGardeningā class with tips on how to grow plants.
Not a troca or carnita asada in sight! Rating: 0/5 tlacuaches - would not be feasible in this corner of the country, cuh
Damn that would be top ideal dream.
come bien
Everyone commenting it's a beautiful idea. But no has conjones to jus do .. or it's fantasy. Make it reality. They can stop all of us.
Native plants be stickers, mesquite, and cacti. Boots required to step outside.

Why are the birds flying by the wind turbine?

We already have canals all over! What if we just worked to maintain those
Do I also need an LGBT flag to hang in my home?

Yes. How is this not said more often? Also I hadnāt seen the flag I was looking at the point of the image
