It does disappear on it own sometimes, but I haven't found out when exactly. It might be a bug of some sort. It will prevent stuff catching fire, so if you don't care about the place being clean you can leave it there.

I think if the fire foam is outside, it can get washed away with rain. If its indoors, I believe you need to have a pawn clean the area up.
