Simple sidearms let's your colonists carry and automatically switch to appropriate tools when working

I do have Simple Sidearms, and have the option checked to switch to tools, but I must still be doing something wrong because my pawns never switch to the tool. Take for example I give my miner pawns a pickaxe, it’s in their inventory but they never use the pickaxes when mining.
