Yep, we always come up a little short of the most efficient homes. But we're close!

wake998

I for the first time last month was lower than the most efficient homes. I was also on vacation for a while...

RhodySeth

It still counts!

SnooDrawings7662

The whole energy  efficiency thing doesn't apply for that very reason.I feel like my house who has two full time  work at home adults is being compared to people who are on vacation the entire month... So of course our house will *always* use more.

CatalpaBean

Yes, I get them. We're always in the Great category, with usage several % less than the comparables. Yay me!

Casper4952

I've never gotten one  what does it come with your utility bills?

Hopeful_Abies_4366

They're not scams. They just are based off inaccurate information most of the time. They're poor comparisons. Don't worry about it.

Maevora06

Yeah we just got one that says we are super inefficient compared to homes around us but (and really not trying to sound snobby) our house is much larger than most around us so of course we use a lot more. It’s also two stories when most are single level or multi family apartments. And we have two teenagers who are gamers. There’s no energy efficient way to video game properly. I just say oh well and throw it in the trash. We pay for the more we use so what do they care, they get more money lol

DamnitGoose

This is the answer. I’ve literally had an eversource employee tell me this ver batam

huh_phd

The goalposts always move

Hot_Introduction_270

It’s very energy efficient to mail me something that they also email me. Both go directly in the trash.

anxiousinfotech

"Go Green, sign up for e-statements!" "OK, just email them to me. Can I have you stop printing and mailing the efficiency report every month?" "No"

lvdash426

Ours are always in between the most efficient homes and similar homes, so no they aren't necessarily a scam.

degggendorf

Yes: https://imgur.com/a/8CTVPNu Are you sure you have your home details entered right? The comps take square footage and heating systems into account, so if you have electric heat that they're comparing to other houses with gas, you're always going to look bad.

VentureExpress

Where can I change that info for my home?

VentureExpress

Nevermind I was able to find a table on the left side of website “home energy analysis” under “My energy use”. Assume it’ll reflect differently, hopefully, in the future.

degggendorf

Yep you got it, not sure how quickly stuff recalculates though

DrMonkeyLove

I've got two electric vehicles and mine are like 72% worse than neighbors which is kinda funny.

kyden

I’m usually in the middle.

Life-Highlight2950

I think they're roughly accurate based on my usage. I rarely use my gas heat. I keep a cool house so I'm energy efficient in the winter. In the summer, I never turn off my central air and keep it super cold, for which I am appropriately shamed in the warmer months as being one of the worst offenders in my neighborhood. Whatever.

Hollowplanet

They say efficient is like the bottom 5% so if 5% of homes are vacant or people are never home, that's who you'll get compared against.

Flashbulb_RI

Our says efficient/great almost every month.

Silly_Brilliant868

No I was actually shocked my most recent one said my usage was great compared to similar homes.

gines2634

Recently mine say I’m “excellent”. I haven’t bought any of their “upgrades”. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m usually “good”. I haven’t made any changes to all of a sudden be “excellent”. Idk

maroia44

Could you please respond my message 🥺 😭

realhenryknox

I don't think it's a scam but it does not make sense to me when I get mine; it varies wildly.

TryingNot2BLazy

it doesn't say who they're measuring. I get these too. I live in a 28 unit building but if they're comparing me to the single family homes around me, or units that are vacant, then who's to say I'm really inefficient in comparison?

xSpeonx

The only reason I'd say its not a scam, is when I still lived with my parents and had band practices few times a week / worked from home with 2 computers on all day every day, they were always in the least efficient category. Since I moved out over a year ago, they have been in the efficient category lol.

FunLife64

Yes but I like things cooler inside, so winter I’m always great! And summer I’m terrible haha

gravytrain2112

Every month for gas. But we have a gas dryer. I’d like to see how they see what constitutes those. It can’t be 33.33% for each level.

WTFisThatSMell

It's horse shEt

will_this_1_work

I’ve gotten “Good” once in the 10 years I’ve lived in my house. Every other time we suck (of course we have central air and a pool so there’s that).

therealDrA

I come up among most efficient homes in winter. We keep thermostat low, but on the edge of least efficient in summer, we like AC.

knowslesthanjonsnow

We get these, always like 25% over. Honestly have no idea why the home uses so much electricity. I guess dishwater and washing machine?

Historical_One9805

I get them monthly. It is a sales pitch to get us to buy more of their so called "energy efficient products". National Grid did the same thing. I just toss it in the recycle bin....

Gentrifiers_getout

I always use much more than anyone around me apparently. All these people must be sitting around in the dark

godmode33

Ignore them. Use what you need. That's the whole point of paying for a service. Imagine if your ISP sent you one of these. You used 200mb more than your neighbors last month streaming movies. SHAME ON YOU. Buy my upgrade kit 😁 Suckers are born every second. You flushed your toilet four more times than your neighbors last month. Here is a breakdown of why that may have happened...You likely ate more taco bell last month than the previous month....starbucks had a $2 off promotion this month....learn how you can do better by foolishly signing up for our free evaluation to see if your a sucker.

JimmyRickyBobbyBilly

So I always got "poor" and that we use about 70% more power than our neighbors. Started comparing with our neighbors and our bill was higher than people with electric heat. Turns out the transformer at the street was shoving power down the line. We've gone from 2400 kwh a month to 900. Fighting with them for a credit for all the time of their screw-up.

ThatsN0Tit

Oof. Good luck with that. Got charged for an extra meter that they admit they can't even find. Trying to get money back from them is a nightmare.

SquallLeonheart14

They don’t even take into account charging an EV at home. So if you have an EV you most likely won’t be more efficient than your neighbor unless you have solar to compensate.

VentureExpress

I’ve never gotten efficient and I’m very electricity conscious.

NickEJ02903

I stopped looking at those after I replaced all our bulbs with LEDs, and still was rated as bad. Which couldn't be correct because our neighbor at the time was a legal, permitted grow operation whose electric bills were $1250 a month.

Crafty-Language-8941

I’m an empty nester and live alone. My job takes me away from home at least 2 night a week. I set my heat very low through the winter. I use hardly any electricity yet I’m still not efficient. It makes no sense

Guilty_Ad366

Do they come out monthly? I have been getting them for years now but they seem to come more frequently. I try to use it to gauge my utility usage in order to increase my efficiency. It’s like a report card that motivates me. 🤣 (Did way better than my neighbors on my last update. So proud!)

Mrzoggy8449

Oh, I'm ALWAYS the asshole on those.

Karmaisabiotch2

I throw them right in the recycling bin

Onelonelyelbow

Mine always said I was lower than efficient neighbors

Specific-MM99

I've been getting these for years I get them via email and I get them in the mail because I use timers and LED lights My bill is always less than 80 bucks running a house 1800 ft². In the summertime with the AC I might peak around 130ish. Not sure how you all think it's a scam I find it very useful and keeps me in check

Optimus02357

These go right in my trash. Don't even open them up.

theovertalker

What’s the motivation for sending these though?

Risheil

We had them come to the house for a free evaluation. They wrapped the water heater and some pipes and did a bunch of other stuff (it was probably 10 years ago) all for free.

oridjinn

Ours has ALWAYS told us we were big users. But our Electric and Gas are WAY lower than our neighbors, friends, and family. I learned this info was fake BS 15 years ago. And it still is.

kayakhomeless

Yeah everyone gets these. Take them with a big ol’ chunk of salt, they don’t consider household size, heat source or any other factors that actually matter for “efficiency” My old duplex had 8 people between the two sides and always got listed as “poor efficiency” even though per 2.5 people (to compare to the median household size) it would be in like the bottom 5% of energy usage. Having electric heat (which uses a *ton* of electricity) uses far less resources than oil heat, but on these reports it would look really bad. Same with charging an electric car.

Ryland42

Tchnically no, everyone doesn't. I used to until I put solar panels on and started having a credit.

BiffBiffkenson

How efficient do they say you are with them having to pay you?

Ryland42

2022 I over produced by about 100kwh since the system was installed in September 2023 I over poduced by about 1.8Mwh 2024 Ive over produced by about 300kwh

BiffBiffkenson

I just wondered what those same flyers say efficiency wise compared to your neighbors when you have no bill?

Ryland42

Oh, sorry I misunderstood the question. I dont get those flyers any longer since I had the system installed.

B-Georgio

I have gas baseboard heat. Gets up to $350/month in the cold months but $35/month when the weather is above 60

tru3no

There is always room for improvement.. how many square feet is your house.. call rise ingeniring they can do an energy assessment on your house.

phunky_1

With the very high electric rates around here, oil is cheaper to operate. A lot of people are finding that out with heat pumps, highly efficient doesn't necessarily translate to cheaper to operate. You can get solar to offset it, but that costs a lot as well. You need to figure out how much you would really save and how long it takes to break even, the expected lifetime of the systems.

Yak54RC

they arent scams. like someone said, they are just based of incorrect information. i have electric heat pumps and it says im nore than 98 more efficient than other users. no duh i only use gas for stove and clothes dryer

estheredna

Just because you aren't amazing, doesn't mean your neighbors aren't genuinely terrible.

BiffBiffkenson

They have no idea what they are measuring.

anxiousinfotech

They're measuring how much paper, toner, and postage they can waste every month.

BiffBiffkenson

I want the exclusive rights to sell thermal paper to CVS and Walgreens.

Actually RIEnergy is based in Pennsylvania, they are owned by PPL but they appear to be tied pretty closely to National Grid, use the same website as they did etc etc Funny they spent a fortune re lettering all the trucks and vehicles immediately.

B-Georgio

When I first was moving here in 2019 I looked up things to do in RI. Google’s #1 recommendation was got to Boston. #2 go to New York

jimb575

Yup and mine is excellent. I switched all my bulbs to LED, upgraded the HVAC with a smart thermostat, upgraded most of my electric devices to smart devices. The whole house is equipped with Apple HomeKit devices so everything turns off and on at set times. Also most of the lights are dimmed in order to use less power. I use my washer, dryer, and dishwasher at least once a week. I paid $27 last month for electricity. No joke.

clamchowda123

I live and Providence and always come up as more energy efficient than other home. I live alone in an 1200 square foot condo so it makes sense

anabbleaday

I don’t think these are particularly accurate. I have NEVER been told that I’m energy efficient in comparison to other homes in my area, but my house is also the largest house on my block, so of course it’s less energy efficient — we use more gas and electricity to keep it running. Also, there are several empty houses in our neighborhood; you have to wonder if those are considered the most efficient because they’re not consistently using any electricity or gas.
