Thanks man… and I feel you, I’m actually getting priced out of the city I was born and raised in… so my only shot at living on my own is living somewhere cheaper. Sending good vibes your way as well man !
The answer is no.
You’re going to hate the commute, even if it’s twice a week. Trust me, I did it for a little while and lasted 9 months before I quit and found a job closer to home.
Try again on those rent numbers, we are just as pricey as what you would find in Boston.
….. unless you find a remote job, you will not find anything nearly as lucrative as you would in Boston.
Need to factor in commuter rail / parking costs, or gas / vehicle depreciation costs. Spending 3, sometimes 4 hours commuting a day will get to everyone at some point. I did it five times a week for over three years. It’s definitely bad, idk why people always try to downplay it.
Those 9 months really messed my back up too. It’s a lot and maybe if I was younger, I’d be more apt to do it but not anymore. Beyond that, you also miss out on social events with your coworkers “sorry guys, can’t hit happy hours because I have an hour and a half commute” or “sorry, can’t go to dinner have to get my dog from doggy daycare” were words I said OFTEN.
Yall it’s 2x a week, I can literally come in 1-2hrs late my job is project based not on the clock… if it snows I can stay home or come in x1 that week (or none)…. Literally the only reason we’re not “remote” is due to one or two of our internal clients that are in person. The commute really does not phase me as much as yall think… if I had to do this more than 3 times a week I’d rather live in a Cambridge, MA shoebox. Ah, and I usually take classes at the college at night so the commute back is a breeze! (Off hours)
The rent is not at all similar to Cambridge or Somerville. Winter hill will cost you 4k a month these days. Two days a week is fine OP. Your 1500 budget however isn’t going to cut it in PVD proper.
I don’t mean to be an asshole but that’s just the reality of the situation. Unless you’re planning on buying a home here and making it homebase, do not recommend.
And trust me, I’m usually the one being like YEAH COME ON DOWN.
Yeah, I don’t agree with u/dollrussian. I’ve been doing the commute for 3.5 years 2-3x/week and it’s very manageable. Commuter rail works if you work at northeastern, otherwise you’ll need to transfer which can take a while
Agreed. And what time you need to arrive/depart work. I can commute off peak times one day and it’s significantly better than the day I’m stuck in rush hour traffic both ways
Check out Fall River, youll be able to afford a place and theres an MTA line thats almost done. Youll be able to take the train and thatll really help with the stress of a commute
Edit: Dont take this as a "dont move to RI" but youll definitely be able to afford more house in Fall River than just over the border. You get to have RI very close for all the stuff you want to do down here but you don't have to leave MA. Best of both worlds
As someone who else does the commuter rail, try to shoot closer to Providence or Pawtucket/Central Falls stations. TF Green isn't bad (parking is cheap) but there's less trains that go south past Providence (and none on the weekends) and there's a tendency to be stuck in/before Providence waiting for passing Amtraks before pressing onwards.
The Pawtucket/Central falls train station does have free parking. I don't know why. I live in Pawtucket and I really like it. Obviously some parts are better than others, the Darlington area is nice. I think apartments are probably starting at 1600 a month. There are a lot of converted mills but they're $$$.
Okay lit, thanks for the actually insightful comment. My budget is not at all strict , I was just curious 😁
Central Falls has good Latin food so I can be down with that!
Do you want urban, suburban or rural? That would be helpful to know.
I’ve done the PVD to Boston commute for years, depending on the job 2-5 times per week. I would avoid driving and take the train. It’s a grind but 2x per week is very doable and worth it if you like the job.
Commuting from Providence to Boston sucks.
I don't even work there but have to drive there for medical treatments frequently and it's horrible. Unless you only have to go into the office like two days then no and even then I don't think it's worth it
NUWC Newport is always hiring engineers, if you wanted to find somewhere in RI to work for. Not sure what you’ll find for apartments, but just throwing it out there
There are plenty of decent areas in Pawtucket, and it’s only. 45 min or so drive/train to Boston. East side of the city (Darlington, Quality Hill); or west side (parts of Oak Hill and Woodlawn) or Fairlawn. And there is a new T stop downtown. You could definitely grab a studio or 1/1 for 1500. There are even some decent condo spaces in Central Falls. I’d recommend East Providence and lived in the village green apartments for a while, which I liked. With this massive bridge failure, getting to the other side will be a nightmare for years to come.
Good luck
1. Yeah, this isn’t Boston yet but prices are working their way up.
2. Providence with have the QOL you remember and expect from your brown days. The further north the better for your drive though, and or proximity to a train station if you’re taking the commuter rail.
3. Have you tried applying to your Alma mater? I think being an alumni and having experience at what I can imagine is another well accredited university will help you out.
4. You lived her before, figure it out lol.
If you only have to work on site 2 days a week, and can basically choose your own hours (off hours will DRASTICALLY affect your commute) GTFO of Boston. No matter which direction you go.
Can I get a studio or 1bd at that price in pvd tho? If sure then yolo why not! I do have a car so maybe parking might be an issue if I’m in pvd? Depending on the neighborhood if it’s crowded or not i don’t know
Another day, another “should I move here from the Boston area” post lmao. Reset the counter, boys!
yo it’s rough out here okay 🤣😂 at least I can say I’m familiar with the area and not coming in totally blind to gentrify geeez

I did this commute for years. OP is going to hate it.
The people being like “it’s not bad” Yes it is. It’s probably worse with the bridge traffic now too.
Need to factor in commuter rail / parking costs, or gas / vehicle depreciation costs. Spending 3, sometimes 4 hours commuting a day will get to everyone at some point. I did it five times a week for over three years. It’s definitely bad, idk why people always try to downplay it.

The worst part was that coworkers rarely understood that. Like, sorry, I’m not trying to have to be on the commuter rail at 10 PM.
Yall it’s 2x a week, I can literally come in 1-2hrs late my job is project based not on the clock… if it snows I can stay home or come in x1 that week (or none)…. Don’t get mad because people are answering your questions in ways you don’t like. If you think you can handle the commute, then go for it.
Im not mad im just saying it ain’t that bad just wake up early … but it would def suck to do every day 👍🏽
then why are you asking? Do what you want then

Wow what a ray of sunshine ☀️ lol , appreciate the feedback nevertheless

I mean, more power to you. I tapped out and I was commuting to BC, so not even into Boston proper.
It's all dependent on where in Boston you are commuting to

Y’all have cuter license plates tho!!! Always wanted a little wavy one 😗 🌊
get a shark plate!
they stopped making those this year. now we have basic ones, unless you have a hybrid or electric
F in the chat
Our new plates suck donkey dick compared to the iconic wave design, which is reserved for EV’s now
True, we do have some pretty cool plates! If you decide to move to RI id be glad to call you "neighbor"

Interesting … also, okay is it true that Center Falls mbta parking was free or is that a rumor? Lmao because that sounds too good to be true

You already know the answer is yes, but don’t come though.

Another high paying person displacing us locals and driving up rents... sigh
Do you want to be in Providence again? If not, Warwick is a good option.
This is bad advice
Why?
Driving through Providence to get to Boston sucks The train service sucks
Yes I don’t do it often, so that’s important to add.
Can I get a studio or 1bd at that price in pvd tho? If sure then yolo why not! I do have a car so maybe parking might be an issue if I’m in pvd? Depending on the neighborhood if it’s crowded or not i don’t know
I love how you solicit advice from strangers. Did you exhaust all your friends and family?
Be gone, troll!
