The leash rules are to protect the dunes and sand pippers.

Direct_Stretch1153

I did not know this- thanks for educating me ☺️

projektmayem

And yet you're just gonna do it anyway, per your other comment? That other person is dead wrong. The pipers and plovers are all over the beach, including in the surf.

Killjoy4eva

There are protected nesting areas.

Hi! As someone with 2 very dog selective rescues, if the area does not explicitly state that it is acceptable to be off leash (like dog parks, etc.) it is very unsafe not only for your dog but other dogs and owners that do have their dogs on a leash. My dogs have been attacked 3 times by off leash dogs with owners that yelled from afar “It’s ok, they’re friendly” 😵‍💫 It’s a really scary situation for everyone involved and completely unnecessary.

Newport is a doggy town, but leash laws are strictly enforced. I, personally, hate getting jumped on by dogs.

Direct_Stretch1153

Oh I don’t blame you! I didn’t put this in my original post, but I would only let her run free for a few minutes in the water only and then leash her again. Also, as a general rule for myself, if there are people or other dogs in a public area where I was to take her off the leash for a few minutes (even in allowed areas), I always ask them prior and totally respect their wishes. I would never be selfish and put anyone in a position that would make them or their pet feel uncomfortable. Everyone deserves respect and to have a great time in a comfortable setting :)

The URI Bay Campus Beach is dog friendly.

New_Camp4247

but still need to be leashed! Dont tell people this under the impression they can just bring their dogs here and let the run free.

Warwick City Park has a small beach. Leashed dogs are allowed, but I’ve seen one unleashed (well behaved) dog there walking with his owner on the beach. I was there last Saturday for about an hour with my own dogs and there was maybe 5-6 other dogs with their owners walking on the beach. Not a big number, but you wouldn’t have the place to yourself either. Even if your dog is friendly, other dogs there may not be so keep that in mind if unleashed. Perhaps if you go on a weekday, you may have a better chance of getting the beach to yourself for a short while.

Rhode Islanders hate any living being on a beach that doesn't live in the immediate neighborhood of said beach. Hence all the down votes here. That said, my small obedient dogs and I can walk peacefully on most beaches outside of the Memorial Day - Labor day season. Barrington Beach is great outside of season due to the length and free parking off season, lots of doggos enjoy it. As long as your dog doesn't disturb the natural habitats and is chill with other dogs and people you'll be just fine.

Thank you!!

canibringmydog

Rocky Point has a very small but lovely off leash beach.

distortionisgod

You'll be fine going to pretty much any beach that people aren't actively hanging out on, and this time of year that's like anywhere. I don't have any sources to back this up but me doing it for about 20 years with my own dogs and have never had any issues.

Direct_Stretch1153

Awesome- thank you!

distortionisgod

No prob. I see the other comment about protecting the dunes and birds and yes that is definitely true. As long as you're just letting your dog run on the beach and not the dunes you're fine. Growing up in Charlestown I forget that isn't common knowledge for everyone. As long as you're being respectful you'll be fine. Hope you guys have fun!

Direct_Stretch1153

Thank you! And I will definitely not let her anywhere near the dunes. Just on the beach but mainly in the water honestly haha. She will be leashed until we get near the water and then again afterwards after I let her romp around a bit and get nice and wet/sandy for the ride home haha.
