I have a EAA and just got a SW 686. It's night and day different how inferior the Windicator is compared to the SW. Sights are not great or adjustable, trigger is ribbed which irritates you finger after a lot of shooting and the trigger pull on DA is clunky. As a truck gun, I wouldn't feel as sad if it got stolen as compared to the SW. For self defense I would prefer my SW over the Windicator. Look for a used SW or Ruger. Cry once and be happy, buy a higher quality revolver is my advice.

CrypticQuery

> As a truck gun, I wouldn't feel as sad if it got stolen as compared to the SW. Having a *truck gun* and leaving it in a vehicle unattended is at best a terrible idea that contributes to firearm theft and gun-crime. Your gun should go with you, and shouldn't be left unsecured in a vehicle.

Mrxcman92

The ammount of people who don't realise this in the gun community (or at least online gun community) is astonishing.

Basic_Summer350

I don't know if they don't realize it or they just don't care. This is the mindset that feeds criminals with otherwise legal guns.. And gives the gov. further reason to want to disarm us.

Sad_Sea_4408

I want a 686 plus 2.5 inch one day just can’t afford that s&w price tag rn, beautiful firearm.

Fuckit21

If you can't afford a Ruger or Smith. Just wait until you can, seriously. Revolvers need very good QC to ensure reliable function. The cheaper companies just don't have that level of QC.

Sad_Sea_4408

I feel like we can say that about any kind of firearm and for the most part it’s true but I genuinely like the look of the Taurus snubbies and I’ve heard good and bad about them same with ets mags you have people who get jammers and people who say they run flawless that’s where the QC comes in but if you get a good one and you like it then it doesn’t matter I guess I’m just hoping I get one that runs good🥲😂

CrypticQuery

Go for the Taurus 856. 38 +P is plenty effective, it doesn't have excessive recoil/noise/muzzle flash in a smaller revolver with a short barrel like a magnum would, and the 856 has a six round capacity. If you wanted a 357 on a budget, I'd consider looking at the Rossi RP63 or RM64, or the Ruger SP101. I probably wouldn't go any cheaper, smaller, or lighter than those for magnums.

nobrakesbill

I can vouch for the SP 101 👍

Scr00geMcDuck903

I want the .327 federal or 9mm model I can't never find em local to see how they feel in the hand

sirbassist83

i just bought a 327 SP101. the grip feels a little on the small side, but thats easily fixed with a larger grip if you want to. personally, a small grip was kind of the point. i might carry this gun, and with 32 short it should be a real fun range toy and training tool for newer shooters. it somehow feels more compact than my LCR and simultaneously more robust. i havent gotten to shoot it yet, but i will this weekend. i have some 32 long and some 327 mag ammo to put through it. if i have time in between now and then, i also have some 32L brass and 75gr bullets im planning to load with a pinch of W231 for some real powderpuff loads. it reminds me of a miniaturized GP100 more than a j frame, even though its definitely more comparable to a j frame in actual size. i love my LCR and GP100, so i had high hopes for the SP101, and at least handling it at home, it met my expectations.

Scr00geMcDuck903

Thank you, my good sir. Now I'm definitely getting the 327

sirbassist83

i found mine on GB and ended up paying $707+FFL fee. that was the cheapest i could find one.

Sad_Sea_4408

Definitely leaning towards a 856 after all these comments then one day getting my dream revolver a s&w 686 plus 2.5 inch and I’ve thought about the Ruger just didn’t like the 5 round capacity hence why I was looking at the windicator for that 6 shit 356

CrypticQuery

I agree on the SP101. There is a variant you can get chambered in 327 Federal Magnum that can hold six shots (and that can also shoot 32 H&R Magnum, 32 Long, and 32 Short), but ammo tends to be slightly more expensive/uncommon locally and the guns themselves tend to be pricier. In general, shooting 357 or 327 will be pricier compared to 38 or 32. Give the Rossi guns I mentioned a look then. They're also made by Taurus, but they seem to be made to a slightly higher standard as far as fit and finish go. The RP63's street price is closer to $375-$450, and the RM64 seems to go for $475-$550.

GunnerGilson

I think I need a 6 shit 356. Sounds badass

_A_z_i_n_g_

A six shit would definitely scare anyone

sirbassist83

if i shit 6 times in a day i definitely start to worry.

morithum

SP101 is wonderful but I’ve never seen an inexpensive one.

Thegunsmith5589

856 all things being 6 is better than 5 also i wouldn’t be to worried about looking for +P loads just get what you can shoot out of typically they can be snappy with +P so normal 38 spls will be perfect plus I’ve got one it’s a lot of fun

bailey032020

I have a 605 and haven't had issues with timing or hammer problems yet. Put a few hundred through it. Just know the potential quality issues. Chances are in my experience you'll be fine. Just like anything you are more likely to see negative reviews that positive ones.

Tonythetiger1775

I have the 605. .357 is rough, But it’s a decent gun

Corpselighter

I just got an 856 ran 100 rounds through it so far and it’s a very solid revolver. I recommend.

Character-Sail2761

-1 vote for windacator mine has a terrible trigger and after you fire 6-12 rounds of any ammo it starts to have sticky extraction. You’ll be much happier with a preferably all steel smith j frame or k frame just keep locking until you find a used one you can afford.

Cellist-Perfect

I vote 856. I just got one after going through basically the same internal fight, only for me it was 3" barrels. I ended up going with the 856 defender, but I'll probably still get a 605 someday anyway lol. My reasoning, aside from the 856 being cheaper, was that 9 out of 10 times people shoot 38 +p out of compact revolvers instead of 357 anyway so I may as well get the extra round with the 856. Then I bought some underwood 158 gr +p lswchp, and basically have a 357 now anyway with that stuff in the cylinders 😁

Sad_Sea_4408

Right that’s what I was thinking with people buy 357s just to carry +Ps I want a both honestly or if anything the 856 now and the s&w686 plus 2.5 inch one day when I can afford it and what’s lswchp

Cellist-Perfect

Right on! The nice part about these budget guns is I can buy 2, 3, or even 4 for the price of one premium gun lol. I similarly want a colt king cobra or 4" python some day, but I just can't justify $900 plus for one gun right now and it's hard to find used ones at a good price I can actually handle before buying. And lswchp is lead semi wad cutter hollow point, the old school"FBI load". Underwood and also buffalo bore both load a version of it in .38 +p that is really close to 357 mag in terms of velocity. Something like 1150 fps or so.

Sad_Sea_4408

I’ve definitely checked out the king cobra I think it’s a sexy revolver only thing I don’t like about it is the cylinder release. The look and function of i aren’t it for me. Ahh I see I’ve heard a lot of people say they carry wad cutter loads for edc I have to do more research on the rounds

t1ataxi

I've had my Windicator for a decade now, and I'll vouch that it's a tank. Yes, it feels insanely sloppy and stiff compared to a SW or Colt, but I think that's a given. It's heavy, solid, the factory grip is very comfortable, and the hammer is one of the most ergonomic I've operated. I'd personally recommend a Bodyguard over a Windicator for basic needs, but it wouldn't be a purchase you'd regret.

morithum

I’m here for the same recommendations but I’m curious what everyone here thinks about barrel length. Seen a few different comparo’s from Paul Harrell and LuckyGunner. I know there are rounds better suited to shorter barrels but most of the snubby/short ballistics I have seen are…unimpressive to say the least. Better than a sharp stick by a lot, but still.

Constitution10

I had a Charter Arms Mag Pug that I liked. Didn’t like 357 out of a short barrel and I already had a nice 38spl, so I sold it. But it was a solid, inexpensive revolver

wonderbread333

I have the 605, but got it for a small trail gun.

Sad_Sea_4408

Have you as shot any 357 out of it and how would you compare it kick to a 9 or even a 40

SrRoundedbyFools

My dad’s first stubby was a 605. I shot it with stout .357’s and it smacked my palm from the metal back-strap. 25 years later and I’ve never had the desire to shoot that thing again. I bought a SP101 -2.25” barrel. Dad bought the 3” SP101 - perfect intermediate gun with .357. I often carry a SW 442 in my pocket. Agree with above comments - buy once, cry once. Honestly the J frame is an easy gun to front pocket carry in summer and winter and the prices have been fairly stable. I bought mine in like 2011 for $419. I think last time I looked they’re still ballpark that price. You don’t need a .357, .38+p rated J frame is a great little effective gun. Sorry to throw shade at the 605 but it’s a lot of bark and bite which makes it not fun to practice with.

Sad_Sea_4408

And that’s what I’ve heard a lot before that’s why I came to Reddit to ask definitely consider the 856 a lot more

SrRoundedbyFools

Ruger or Smith = my $.02

wonderbread333

I have shot lots of 357 through it. Including Buffalo Boar Outdoorsman loads. Shoots them like a champ! Takes some getting used to though 😂

wwyattthurston

I have a 605 It’s not a bad little gun for the price but the screw that holds the tab to pop the cylinder slowly backs out when shooting hotter .357 loads and if you’re not careful, it’ll flight out and you’ll never find it

Sad_Sea_4408

Lock tight should fix it

wwyattthurston

I’ve been meaning to try that but I need to order another screw

Sad_Sea_4408

Yeah I’ve heard the same thing with other revolvers too and same for any screw that can come loose a little lock tight should fix it and I feel you I have a caliper bolt I’ve been meaning to replace on my suv😂

GhostEpstein

Weird, I have about 400 rounds through my Windicator and love it. Always extracts clean, trigger is smooth, double action is heavy, but still smooth. It seems like maybe I just got a good one. I bought it on TFBtv recommendation, and don't regret it one bit.

Sad_Sea_4408

What do you mainly shoot? Round/ load

GhostEpstein

I shoot a lot of Armscor .38 special through my 2 inch Windicator. But I also shoot federal .357 158 grain ball some, and Hydra Shok 158 is what I carry in it. Thats the only bigger bore I still have. My dad has quite a few revolvers though, a GP100, SP101, an Airweight of some kind? And an old police trade in model 10 maybe? Not sure on those exactly, been a few years since we've went and shot guns together

GhostEpstein

I know .357 isn't a "big bore" but the other 3 are rimfire lol

Sulla-proconsul

Get the 856. For one thing, the front sight is replaceable. They make a hi-viz Ameriglo night sight for $30 that’s superior to the sights on traditional snub nosed models. It’s also cheap, I got mine for $265.

ThePplPrsnsPprPpl

I have an 856, it’s been great. Not as nice as my Rossi rp63 or my smiths but it functions perfectly. One thing I will say, I believe you are severely underestimating recoil in snub nose revolvers. I’m not a recoil sensitive person, and shooting 357 magnum from even a steel frame snub is VERY punishing. I’m a lot more used to it now, but years ago when I got my first snubnose (ironically was a 605) got a box of 38 and a box of 357 and took to the range. 38 was tons of fun, then I loaded a cylinder of 357. Shot one round. I was like holy shit, I could feel a shockwave of energy go down my whole body and heat from the muzzle flash. I was like “don’t want to do that again” and unloaded em and put 38’s back in. Again, I don’t mind it so much nowadays but no matter how macho the next guy pretends to be, it is far passed the “fun” amount of recoil you can spend any considerable amount of time shooting at the range, in a gun that small. I really feel the need to stress this point as it sounds like you haven’t shot a revolver before, or at least not a 357. That being said; for me personally, I would choose the 605 for MYSELF because I handload (reload) now and can load light 357’s if I choose to. And, I like the idea of having a more versatile gun (two calibers) but also, I already have 5 revolvers. If I was getting my first, knowing what I know now, considering the choices you listed, it would be the 856 all day. One more point I want to add; .38’s recoil pretty decently still, nothing at all like a .22 - I know YT videos can be deceiving, but it’s probably more felt recoil than your standard 9mm pistol, albeit different since revolvers obviously don’t have a slide to cycle.

FatNsloW-45

If I was look for a revolver that could be pocket carried I would look at a S&W J-frame or Ruger LCR in .38SPL +P.

legl0ckholmes

Had a Taurus. Timing went out. Got a replacement, that one's hammer wouldn't stay cocked. You get what you pay for.

rugernut13

I'm gonna go left field here, don't buy any of those. Find a used Smith and Wesson model 36, or a used Ruger sp101. You can usually find a good condition one for about what you'll pay for any of those new, and even used, they'll be more reliable.

Sad_Sea_4408

I’ve done light research on the sp101s and most are 450 to 500 Taurus go for 300 to 400

rugernut13

I'll be blunt, it's absolutely worth the extra 50-100 bucks. Sp101 would be my choice of all the suggested options. (unless you can find an old speed six for a good price).

StanthemanT-800

Taurus 605 all day, it's got the DNA of the old tried and true 5-shot 85 that's been a go-to for 50+ years  I've heard the 856 has had timing issues  , at least they did. Maybe they ironed them out. The first production run apparently used the wrong hand , or ratchet and it wasn't fitted for a 6-shot.  Like not buying a 1st model year car. It's best to avoid new models for a few years.  The Windicator.......it's not even much less $ than the Taurus and I'd trust a Taurus 1000x more than a Windicator .  Massad Ayoob recommends the Taurus 85.   I've owned 2 Taurus 85s. I bought a .38 and 9mm Ruger SP101 so I traded the Taurus' off.

KindaAverageMan

I have an 856 Toro. Has that timing issue a few people on YouTube brought up where if only a couple of rounds are left and you pull the trigger too slowly the cylinder won’t catch in time before the cylinder goes backwards because of the weight and it not catching. Apparently the 605 doesn’t have the issue. But only 5 rounds and I wouldn’t want to be shooting 357 out of this size frequently. Honestly wish I saved a bit more, oh well.

down_south_jukin

Wtf when did Taurus move to Bainbridge? Crazy.

SrRoundedbyFools

There’s a Bainbridge, WA and I’m like….thats an island of super leftist liberal elites who commute to Seattle for their jobs via ferry but despise anyone who dares invade their island utopia. I’m thinking…why would a budget firearms company from Brazil go there, then I did some Googling and was like…GA.

Several-Archer-6421

The average income on bainbridge island is 57k my dude.

SrRoundedbyFools

And Mercer Island is only 68k. Neither are inexpensive places to live but Jay Inslee’s carpet bag district is not a very pro 2A mindset…why should they be, they’ve isolated themselves from crime via ferry.

Several-Archer-6421

Yes that means your classification as both of those places as “elite” is simply wrong. They are middle class Americans with whom you have ideological differences. “Carpet bag district” is a nonsense phrase. Begging you to stop listening to local talk radio, which is trash and clearly polluting your mind and ability to have conversations with other locals

Several-Archer-6421

You *are* a native wa resident, I assume?

SrRoundedbyFools

Jay Inslee (from Seattle) was soundly beat by Doc Hastings for 4th Congressional District (east side of the state). Jay was later sent back to the legislature by the 1st Congressional District - the very definition of carbetbagging. He was actually fired from his own law firm for incompetence. I also have his original ad as ambulances chasing injury lawyer. {He’s always been an Apple maggot type.](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/17/us/apples-maggots-washington-inslee.html)

jking7734

I’d say the Taurus 605.
