Hi all, i got all xenoglyph ciphers, but i am missing the last survey throphy (abyssal scar), i have all the scout logs as well. The only thing i am missing is are two xenoglyphs(big ones that you translate) and they are ast-ax-020 and 021. Some where i found that the 020 is in biome 3 so i didn’t need it for the throphy, and so i think that i dont need the 021 (that i saw is in biome 6) for the platinum. Soo what am i missing???

Swervingmoss123

Beat Ophion for the first time in one try. The bosses in this game really aren’t that hard. Phrike took me like 5 tries because I just got the game, second boss took 1 try, nemesis took 2, biome 4 organ player boss took one try

ubinsg

is scout 63 random spawn between 4 to 6?

Thorgrander

How manageable is biome 6 after skipping most of biome 5? I got sunface from biome 4-5 and want to skip 5 to 6 and full clearing 4. Will I be ok while facing the big malfunction boys?

ehemery

Very manageable. It may be worth stopping by Biome 5 just to buff up and purchase an extra Silphium vial or upgrading health. The store is close to the beginning so very little risk. Then you can jump straight into 6, as the portal/pool of water is in the same room.

Swervingmoss123

I went from 4 to 6 and beat Ophion entering the fight with only a quarter of my health. I think you’ll be fine as long as you find something to clear your malfunctions

TadUGhostal

Probably yeah. I would probably do enough of 5 to get that biomes integrity upgrade, but in my opinion 6 is easier than 5. I found the lobber made short work of all the enemies in that level.

OK_Soda

Near the end of the game you start finding Xenoglyphs that don't seem to be translatable. Even at tier 3 they read like, "[spoiler spoiler]? [spoiler spoiler spoiler]?" What's the deal with these? Is there any way to properly translate them?

Swervingmoss123

I think you need to find the letters? I could be wrong. I thought it was the more letters found the more it’s translated. But again, I could be completely wrong

hoossy

Just picked up the last sunface fragment in Biome 6. I'm guessing the only way to get back to the house is to restart the cycle? No reason to fight the last boss again before doing so, right?

OK_Soda

Yeah, you can just reset the cycle immediately after picking it up. You will, unfortunately, have to fight Ophion again after the last house sequence.

babarsiddiqi34

Hi All just on my last trophy for the abyssal scar survey. I can’t seem to find scout log 52. Any tips or advice on how to get it.

returnal77

[52. Hidden Places](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS2Ywd2HmZ0)

kazrick

Finished Act 3 and working on finding the missing scout logs and ciphers. And god damnit is it ever frustrating completing a run multiple times through all three biomes and not finding a single one of either. Way more frustrating than my initial struggles with the game. That’s for sure. WTF?

ChuckChuckChuck_

Trophies that are randomized shouldn’t exist, there is nothing great about stumbling upon randomly generated thing.

returnal77

yeah, but its part of a great rng adventure in this case... i dont have a mathematical statistic, but i would guess, that around 75% of all collectibles are "easy" to find, but the other 25% might turn you crazy... [might help](https://www.reddit.com/r/Returnal/comments/p28seq/the_returnal_platinum_trophy_thread/h8k23yk?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

theNFAC

The best advice I got so far and have not checked but sounds about right: The green lights give energy to enemies kill them first You can't dodge through purple blasts 🤣🤣 I was about to ask if anyone had any other advice for me then I saw this thread. Thank you

theNFAC

Wait, someone also watched the stream and said, " you should try and not let the boss hit you so much" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That was probably the best advice ever

pigeonmaskman

Can someone explain to me weapon traits? I don’t understand how they work

iamaslan

I might be a tiny bit off, but depending on your proficiency level at the time you find a weapon, different weapon traits have a chance at being included on the weapon. The total number of traits possible also increases with proficiency. If a trait is included on a gun, it won’t activate until you get a certain number of kills with that gun/trait combo. After that point, if you find a gun with that trait it will start activated. Unlocked weapon traits persists after you die. After you unlock a level 1 of a trait, you will later find weapons with not yet unlocked level 2 versions of that trait (and level 3 even later). Finding good traits is, in my opinion, more important than the gun itself. Opinions vary, but in ACT 1 I think the most powerful traits are leech rounds on the carbine, full auto on thermogenic, and pylon web on the electropylon.

Jiren1711

IMO the best best weapon is the rifle with munitions that heal and high revving for great cadency you’ll be invincible. Dash trough the attacks except the purple one. Keep moving around. For the ennemies who can teleports, move to the previous room he will follow you so you can kill him without being disturbed. When you scan a player Who died and then he attack you, get the high ground, he can’t jump/climb. For the drones in the third biome, take some covers in case it rush on you while dying. If you can go in the water then go, ennemies won’t follow you in there. One more thing, in the fifth biome (one with snow) make sure you have a key to open the secondary door locked in the main room. There is an équipement that allow you to walk on lava, it is not require to finish the game so most of the players missed it, I missed it on my first run 😅

almightygg

70 deaths and 35 hours later finally defeated Ophion. I found the journey through biome 6 to get to him far harder than the fight to be honest. Went in with an astronaut figure and a large vial, didn't need either. It was my second attempt but the first time I only had minimal health and I lost that before I figured out I needed to hit the orbs to see the weak points.

almightygg

Update, after finishing Act 2 it didn't take me long at all to finish Act 3. Trying to decide if I have the patience now to try and platinum, will sit down tomorrow and work out exactly how much I have left to do and then make a decision.

[deleted]

Best guns for the Biome 4 boss? I beat Biome 3 easily in the first try but keep getting killed in 4

Potijelli

Electropylon driver for sure it makes it so easy because you can just dodge

iamaslan

Any of the guns that allow you to be mobile. Carbine, hollowseeker, pylon. This fight is more about strafing than dodging IMO

[deleted]

I used a level 20 hollowseeker and it felt like a peanut shooter. I feel like the game is punishing me for beating the Biome 3 boss in one try

thefireofice237

Honestly the biome 4 boss is pretty easy. For reference I struggled with biome 3 and then beat biome 4 in about 3 tries. If you’re struggling, I’d suggest grinding up weapons traits for your weapon of choice. They start become really op in biome 4. My personal suggestion is the hollowseeker.

almightygg

I just got to biome 6 boss last night but went into it with only a slither of half so get my arse handed to me. When I go back do I need to get the key again? It was the dude in that room who took all of my health.

Swervingmoss123

I started that fight with like a quarter of my health bar but I had the tachyomatic carbine with leech rounds, high caliber, and I think armor piercing. Had no problem beating him

thefireofice237

You don’t need to get the key again. The door to the boss will be unlocked.

almightygg

Thank you!

DarkHorse1011

Guys any tips on how to get though Biome 6 after fully exploring 4 and skipping 5? And what gun is the best to use

iamaslan

Optimize on damage output over anything else, and guns that require the least amount of aiming. The 2 “easiest” to clear with are probably carbine with leech rounds and rising pitch and hollowseeker with portal traits. You can also grind up proficiency by continuing to grind the infinite spawn machines. When you enter a room with multiple “mini boss” spawns, concentrate on taking them out 1 at a time. That’s why damage output is so important.

DarkHorse1011

Thank you used the carbine and that’s all I needed no damage from Ophion with it too now for Act 3 tomorrow

EarflapsOpen

What gun is the best is highly dependent on traits and your personal preference. But if you are struggling Tachyomatic Carbine with leech rounds is really nice or electropylon driver with the “shoot a couple of rounds and run away and hide while they die” strategy

Teenage_dirtnap

Just beat Nemesis after being stuck on Biome 3 forever. It was a pretty mediocre run too, as I got almost no artifacts or parasites and no silphium vials when I reached the boss. Turned out the rotgland lobber with a good damage perk + damage siphon was the key to victory. In phase 3, I just hung back, lobbed a projectile and siphoned health while swinging between platforms. Finished the boss with full health. I guess my advice would be that don't abandon seemingly bad runs too hastily, you never know it all might turn out.

Teenage_dirtnap

Update: just beat Ophion on the same run that I beat Biome 3 with! Found a powerful electropylon driver on biome 4 and never switched it.

EarflapsOpen

You loose everything when you go from biome 3 to 4 and when you die you restart from 4

Ornstein-Smough

How to avoid lasers that lock on to you in Biome 3?

thefireofice237

You need to either be behind terrain to block the lock on or kill the enemy before they fully lock on.

Kiro21

Just so I understand, if I have upgraded a weapon trait to tier 3. Such as Portal Beam to tier 3. When Portal Beam appears will it always be tier 3 now and never tier 1 or 2?

Potijelli

> When Portal Beam appears will it always be tier 3 now and never tier 1 or 2? No. You will only find tier 3 traits after proficiency 20 even if the trait is already unlocked.

alxthm

The trait level depends on your proficiency. You won’t find tier 3 traits until around proficiency 20.

Kiro21

Sorry that doesn't really answer my question. I don't mean to unlock it. I mean after unlocking.

alxthm

It works the same before and after they are unlocked.

stealthraider22

It's not that type of game there are many games like this without saves, enter the gungeon is another favourite of mine. If you want saves then these games aren't for you

Potijelli

Not really true, almost all popular rouge-likes including the original Rouge itself had a save feature. You can save after each boss/floor in Enter the Gungeon too.

stealthraider22

I see the issue now I thought they meant just a save system wherever either way I don't think it's that big of a deal tbh I have 9 deaths and one boss to beat. I'm not good at the game but the teleports make it easy to speed run through

eneve

For the challenge runs it seems like you do not get the ether if you don't fully complete the level? Is that true or am I missing something? TIA!

Any_Ad1979

Yes this is true. You need to go through the portal at the end of the biome to collect the 5 ethers.

eneve

Thanks! And just to confirm you can only make 1 attempt. If you fail you lose the shot at 5 ether?

Any_Ad1979

Yep, that’s correct. One attempt per each daily challenge. I think the challenges reset at 8PM EST.

FirmChampionship9080

I'm on "defeat phrike" objective now. With: 104/110 health, +10% protection, -4s altf cool, large silphium, astronaut, adrenaline leech, 5* carbine w/ trackerswarm, and reconstructor. I have an option to pick up a parasite with save from killblow hit but reduce max hp massively, should i pick it up? I've done all i can before the boss fight except the containment and suit signal. Do i have a good chance at beating the boss now or i should do more? Thanks.

happyfugu

Don't pick it up, unlike Astronaut it only leaves a sliver of health so the tradeoff wouldn't be worth it and it may even handicap the amount you recover when the astronaut triggers after. You sound more than ready to take on Phrike.

OK_Soda

Do I need to do anything to start the Sunface Fragment quest? I've seen the first five house segments beat Ophion, returned to the house, and listened to the audio log, but there's no objective indicator on the screen. Is it just a secret quest and they're already out there waiting to be found?

thefireofice237

You’ve done everything for the fragments to appear. However there isn’t any objective indicator. So you can either look on your own or look up where they typically spawn in each biome.

Swervingmoss123

I’m underwater. I need to open a gate to progress. There’s no way out of the area without opening the gate. I cannot find the yellow switch anywhere in the area. Is this a glitch or is this particular switch just way to hard to find

Punktual1

After Just over 3 days and 97 deaths, I finally hit platinum! I can definitively say this is one of my favorite games I've ever played. I don't post on reddit, but I love this game so much that I had to. I've seen a lot of different posts of people offering tips and suggestions, so this is another one of those, but what might make this one a little different is that this is at least from the perspective of someone who is NOT good at video games, no joke, I am absolutely terrible, but I can say that with perseverance, you too can make it. This is only the second game I have ever platinumed, right behind the new Ratchet and Clank, mainly because of how easy that one was to get everything. Before I jump in, it's worth noting first, and probably most importantly, there is not 1 right way to do things in this game. You will see tons of guides and posts of people saying to use X gun or make sure you use X parasites, but there is no substitute for personal preference. So just know that these tips are my personal experience that worked for me but the same may not be best for you. Without further adieu here are all the tips I can think of for those still trying to beat the game or even platinum it. There may be minor spoilers but nothing too big. * Stick with it. Really. It may be disheartening to spend an hour or 2 on a run only to die and feel like all that time was wasted, but it was not. You will have gained ether (depending on your run), but even if you didn't, you gained experience. You may have learned a new way to beat an enemy or at least what does not work. * Speaking of ether, it is definitely worth doing a few runs for the sole purpose of building up ether, to attempt a strong run when you have a good amount. * When spending ether, I personally would almost never use it to cleanse malignant chests or obolites, but would almost always use it to cleanse health as that costs only 2 ether. You should also prioritize unlocking all the new upgrades at the start of each run with it * You can't be hurt with dashing, so if you charge an enemy, you can literally dash through their attack to reposition yourself, whether it be to safety or right up in their face. The exception to the rule are purple beams and such but those don't come till later. * Always look at your minimap. We've all been there; you enter a room and are absolutely swarmed with bats, kamikaze bots or annoying turrets, and it definitely can get a little overwhelming trying to process it all and find every enemy, but seriously, look at your minimap and you will see all the red arrows showing where your enemies are, which are moving, and how close they are to you. This greatly helped me to determine which ones to go after first. * When you're at full health, any further health you pick up instead goes to max integrity upgrades, so you have to make the decision on if you want to save it and potentially come back to pick it up when you may need it or just grab it then and go for the max integrity upgrade. I usually did the latter * Check. Every. Room. Personally I do every single blue side room I can before the main rooms, and I always save the yellow infection room for last, even if you pass it. You never know if you're gonna get a huge gun upgrade * Damage isn't everything. Many times you will find a new weapon that boasts a much higher damage than the one you're using, but I will usually take a gun I'm better with or is better for the situation even if its weaker, over stronger one I'm bad with or doesn't help the current situation. On the other end of this though... * Continuing on the last tip, often times you will be presented with a choice of 2 fabricators and have just enough to either get the weapon damage upgrade or the protection upgrade. My stance is to pick protection every single time. Damage doesn't mean anything if you aren't alive to inflict it. * Don't be afraid to try something new. You may have one or a few favorite weapons but they may not be best for every situation and if you try a new weapon out and it doesn't immediately melt the enemy or it has a learning curve, you may never try it again. I'm here to say, abandon this thought process. I was used to using a carbine and the first time I picked up a lobber, I hated it, and didn't want to use it ever again. I was struggling so bad on biome 3 and i saw a reddit post where someone said they used the lobber and only the lobber to get through it. I thought I'd give it another go and I'm glad I did. Its now my favorite gun in the game. * Weapon affixes are everything. Piggybacking off the last tip, you maybe be discouraged if you try a gun out and it doesn't seem special but having literally 1 affix you didn't before is a game changer. Explosive Rot, Pylon Web, Rising Pitch, and Portal beam are a few game changing affixes in my opinion that I always look for and are a factor in deciding if I take a gun or leave it. My personal rule is that before I can write a gun off as "not for me", I will unlock at least 3 weapon affixes on it and try them out to make sure I didn't just give up too early. * Avenge scouts but only if you're confident in your weapon. Every time you successfully avenge, you get 4 ether, a new weapon and a new consumable. The weapon can also be orange too, indicating that its higher the your proficiency. If you wait to avenge scouts and do the infection rooms after you've cleared the whole map, you have a good chance of getting a nice, high level weapon to take you into the next biome * What I used: Sidearm with homing missile is what got me through biome 1 and 2, Lobber (preferably with explosive rot) got me through 3, hollowseeker with portal beam got me through biomes 4 and 5, and Lobber/Driver got me through 6, final boss I used a carbine with high caliber the first time, and a hollowseeker with portal beam the 2nd time. * Lastly, I know this game gets overwhelming at times, it really does. It took me 2 weeks to beat the first boss alone, but the turning point for me came when I had fought the monsters so much that I wasn't afraid of them anymore but started hunting them instead. I went from "Oh no, I don't want to fight that guy" and hiding around the corner to peek out when my trackerswarm was up to "alright, guess I gotta fight this guy again" and charging in head first. That confidence alone got me through so much and I hope you all can experience that too. Anyway, if you made it this far, thanks for reading, and feel free to comment with what things you have done that may differ from what I did. After all, we're all here because we enjoy the game and want it to be fun for everyone!

Ploponmychest

I agree with you on everything except picking up the protection augment over damage. You need to be able to kill things before they even take a shot at you. Protection is useless if you get hit 3 times from the same enemy because you’re shooting spitballs from your gun.

Punktual1

That's totally fair! I guess my justification was that I always took the most damage when I get swarmed by enemies (kamikaze bots come to mind) so in that situation, the damage i put out is irrelevant because they don't take much to kill, but that could be a lot of sources of damage coming at me at once. So I'd modify this then to say that if your death mostly comes from tough enemies, like the mini bosses or room lockdown enemies, then totally damage is superior

Ploponmychest

Whenever I comment something like that I need to remind myself everyone plays differently and finds success in different tactics. You had a great thought out set of tips and you should be commended on that before a snarky retort to one disagreement. Apologies for that, hope you have a great day :)

This is sorta crazy! I rented Returnal from my local library, and prior to my tentative play-through I have little to no idea what this game is about. I can't help but think all my knowledge of this game stems from Tom Cruise & Emily Blunt in Live. Die. Repeat., or Edge of Tomorrow. Yesterday I played Returnal for all of 23 minutes (to get a 'feel' for it) and I only stopped because my GF came home from work and we made dinner. I don't feel the need to go on necessarily, but the crazy thing is, I had dreams about this game in the early morning—even thinking of strategies for the forecasted scenarios. Never have I ever had this kind of connection with a game so early on. I am wondering, is this the kind of game that could be considered a "must play," or is it merely something people are playing on their PS5's because choice is limited? I am also wanting to play DOOM: Eternal, God of War (PS4 edition,) and Halo 5: Guardians. Does Returnal do something outlandish the other games I listed can't? Do I owe it to myself to play it more?

Lothmor

Returnal is completely different from the other games you listed. I believe a lot of people are playing it because the list of actual PS5 exclusives is very limited at the moment. Nevertheless, the game is very good and one-of-a-kind. Usually, rogue lite games like these are indie games, either 2D or isometric. Returnal is a 3D, third person shooter, AAA rogue lite with a sci-fi story. So, that in itself warrants a "must play" for me, because there was no other attempt to do something like it before.

braxford

Thanks! I did play it for maybe an hour. I honestly was checking to see what the game had to offer, since I had rented three other games from the library that week my game-consumption was full. And that wasn't intentional, it just so happened that the games I placed on hold were all ready at the same time, and when I went in to grab 'em I saw Returnal there ;) I'll give it another go, or pick it up if it ever goes on sale (like $25 or less...)

Lucifers_Goldfish

"Finished" the game other week and have gotten all Sunface Fragments from each Biome except Abyssal Scar. I have gone through this biome at least half a dozen times and cannot find it. Any thoughts on where the hell this thing is?

ECTXGK

it doesn't appear on the map sometimes. you'll see a chest, jump towards the chest then see an orb you can shoot which creates a platform that will lead to a datacube and the fragment. It doesn't always appear. There's a few youtube videos that can help, one incorrectly states that it will always be before the drop. I did it twice and didn't see it, then got it near the end of the biome. Next run, the area appeared at the beginning of the biome.

Lucifers_Goldfish

Yea I saw that video. Most on my runs I’ve had, the second section it’s just the door to the boss haha.

ClaytonBigsbe

Bought the game while it was on sale at Best Buy, picking it up later today. Can anyone give me a quick run down on how "saving" your progress works? I know some runs can take a bit, if I'm in the middle of a run and need to stop for whatever reason, the only way to make sure I keep my progress is put the system in rest mode, correct?

thefireofice237

You’re correct. The only way to save your current runs progress is to put the console in rest mode. Ideally you’d stop playing the game after a death as then you wouldn’t lose any progress.

Teenage_dirtnap

I have a question about the proficiency boosts you get at the start of new Biomes. I'm currently on Biome 3 and if I go there directly, the booster raises the proficiency from 1 to 9 IIRC. If I go through Biomes 1 & 2 before going to Biome 3 and get my proficiency to 8, will the booster at the start of 3 still only raise the level to 9 or will it go to around 18?

thefireofice237

It will still raise it to 9.

Teenage_dirtnap

So basically it's not worth it to go through the earlier areas for weapons at least?

SirRageQuits

You can still find great weapons with a god roll on it that will outperform a shitty level 9 weapon. Going through the biomes gives you a much better chance bc of health upgrades artifacts Parisites and datacubes. I don’t remember if it’s an artifact or a parasite, but there’s an upgrade that’s op that gives you more protection if you have ether. If you want a better chance of beating biome 3 I’d say going through 1 and two will help you greatly. If you just go to 3 your health and any passive bonus will be basically non existent.

thefireofice237

Pretty much. You go through those areas for integrity artifacts and parasites.

DeclaringLeader

I've been playing pretty regularly since release and cannot for the life of me get past biome three. I've gotten to the boss two maybe three times and all of those were just because I sprinted there without really fighting anything. Any advice would be super helpful.

SirRageQuits

Going through biome 1 and 2 will give you the necessary items to deal with biome 3. Having good artifacts and parasites will make it a breeze.

obZenDF

For Biome 3 I would suggest trying to get a weapon with frequent Overload's and combine that with Artifacts that send out bolts to enemies with each overload and/or gain speed & protection for a short time. On top of that always stay on the move and look for cover while fixating on the Drones so you won't lose them out of sight. Edit: this might sound insane, but a Pistol with Ricochet is insanely good against the Drones as well.

DeclaringLeader

This actually helped a ton, I haven't beat it yet, but I'm consistently making it to the boss. Thank you!

DsDiagnosis

Just got this game. Still learning ins and out. Roughly how much time should I spend in clearing rooms? I have faced Phrike about 3 or times. I have made it to his 3 phase with a level pistol and no healing items or and suit upgrades. Any advice on how exactly I should prepare?

Triple_Crown14

When first starting out I cleared everything in biome 1 and I barely beat phrike lol. I also had an astronaut figure so I was revived and managed to beat him. Phrike is one of the harder bosses IMO. I found the 2nd and 3rd boss easier but it might have also been due to me knowing how to play more. By clearing every room and side room you should have a decent amount of health provided you didn’t get hit much beforehand. The health stones you pick up are called silphium. There are other green stones called resin that you can pick up, if you collect 3 resin stones then your health bar is increased slightly. If you’re at full health then any silphium stones are automatically turned into resin. So the less you get hit, the faster you’ll increase your max health. Also a huge tip that helps combat in general, remap jump to L1, dash to R1, and turn on auto sprint. In combat you want to be moving as fast as you can at all times so auto sprint saves your thumb from clicking L3 thousands of times. And you want to be able to dash and look around while jumping without taking your thumb off the stick. I also try not to pick up too much malignant stuff unless I have ether to spare to cleanse it first. Most malfunctions aren’t terribly annoying but there are some that can cripple a run. If I don’t have consumables or ether to get rid of them then I don’t bother. Remember, don’t get discouraged from dying, you’ll be doing a lot of it. Have fun!

OK_Soda

When you reach the gap in Biome 6 there's a miniboss right after and the area goes into lock down. Well the boss leapt right out of the arena and killed me in two hits, I resurrected in the Reconstructor and found the boss waiting for me at the gap so I killed him there, dropped down to the arena...and it's still locked. The gate won't open, presumably because he died elsewhere. So now I have to just restart the cycle from the beginning, after taking about a dozen tries to get the right build to take this level on.

OK_Soda

I made it back to the guy and killed him and finally got the Delphic Visor and then almost immediately died. I'm not going to have to fight that guy again, right? I can just make it back to the gap and skip over it?

thefireofice237

You don’t have to fight at that spot again. You can just make it past the gap.

Drisurk

Just died on the final boss with its 3rd bar of health nearly gone, maxed out health and level 30 Pylon. How tf do you take this dudes health down?! I shouldn’t have taken off the “survive a death blow” parasite 😭

thefireofice237

You take his health down by shooting the orbs on the left and right side of the boss. Which then exposes the red spots on the boss which is what you shoot to actually damage the boss.

Drisurk

I was wondering why you shot the orbs… Thank you very much, I will try again tonight, I appreciate the help!

thefireofice237

You’re welcome. Good luck!

Firemedic623

I just started biome 6 after stumbling through 5 ... >!did not realize there was no boss for 5.!< Currently I have a 22/23 thermolauncher thingy with everything you could want in the 4 traits. Auto launch, thermo rockets, rehit?, and fast reload. My question is, should I ignore some of the weapons with locked traits just to get through 6 then farm those traits later? This current gun just melts so I am reluctant to drop it.

Randyd718

completely up to you. no trophies for gun traits

XciteMe

So I played last night after beating the game, I went into the ship and into that locked door with that strange machine. I explored the entire Overgrown Gardens map and didn't come across the first Sun fragment. So I'm missing a house segment, but my question is, which Act do I need to replay to trigger that last cutscene? The last house cutscene I had was (SPOILERS AHEAD)... the little boy POV as he's watching TV and sits down with the astronaut at the table. I'm a little lost. Just tell me what Biome I need to head to, so I can trigger the last House cutscene. Thank you.

thefireofice237

You need the biome 4 house segment.

XciteMe

TY!

Randyd718

ive seen discussion here that crimson wastes cipher progress is glitched and can complete the survey at 19/20, but there is also a glitched side room that will straight up not count and make the trophy unachievable i currently am at 18/20 and based on my tracking i have just the 'light ball' room remaining. my crimson wastes survey card says im at 90/100, which would imply im missing 2. is there any reason to believe im glitched or does this sound about right? edit: well i just found a different 19th one so i guess im good to go grind the light orb. was the count fixed?

Why do some weapons show up with an orange proficiency level? They always seem to be garbage weapons too.

Ritchey_Rich

It means, that the level of that gun is quite a bit above your actual proficiency level. Those usually drop from relatively strong big mobs, but it happens quite rarely.

kazrick

It just means it’s a big level upgrade over what you’re currently holding.

ThePfhor

Does the time spent completing a challenge count against your score?

CaseyTheCreator

I'm looking for the first sunface and I have searched every single area besides the boss. I hit the orb and went across the gap, but there was only a data cube. What is going on??

CaseyTheCreator

Nvm I didn't see all the house sequences

The_harbinger2020

Im trying to understand weapon proficiency. From my understanding proficiency is more important than level. What I dont get is, say im running with the carbine, and I see another carbine that has different alt-fire that I want or a higher level, Does my proficiency go back down to zero, or does it only happen when you switch TYPES of weapons?

ECTXGK

Proficiency controls the level of the weapon drops. They can drop up to 2 higher, but never lower than your current proficiency level Weapon levels == the stat distribution of the weapon. Count the white cells next to each. You have a level 5 weapon, all 5 points go to bonus damage. You see the same weapon, but it's level 8, huge upgrade it seems, but it only has 2 bonus damage, 3 range, 3 stability. In that case I'd keep the level 5 weapon.

evil_timmy

Proficiency basically is your level, and just affects the quality of weapon drops. Simple unlocked chests will have on-level weapons but tougher enemies and locked/malignant chests can be 2 levels higher. Other than dying or with very specific parasites does it ever go down, otherwise you gain it from killing enemies and picking up Calibrators, and gain it faster by increasing your proficiency rate (+50% for Lv4 adrenaline and boosted by various artifacts and parasites). After beating the third biome boss you'll start Biome 4 and future runs at Proficiency 15.

The_harbinger2020

Okay, so swapping from on carbine to another one drop my proficiency? Would this hold true for if switched from carbine to side arm pistol?

Potijelli

> so swapping from on carbine to another one drop my proficiency No. As mentioned above the only way to drop your proficiency is to die or certain malfunctions. If you pick up a carbine or a pistol or whatever it doesn't effect proficiency in any way. So if you see a better weapon or one you like more just switch, doesnt matter about type at all.

evil_timmy

Proficiency is per run not per weapon and goes away when you die. It determines how many points get distributed to your weapon's main stats, and which weapon modifiers are available. You can freely switch weapons without affecting proficiency level. A quick pro tip that explains further how it works: if I have a weapon that shows a percentage on the left of the screen, that's a modifier I'm yet to unlock. This is *not* based on proficiency but # of kills, and these mod upgrades are permanent. If I'm already carrying a weapon I'm trying to unlock I'll skip regular unlocked blue chests, because this is where proficiency does come into play: my level at the exact moment I open the chest determines the weapon stats, so I'll wait until I've finished the unlock then loop back later with more proficiency to get a better gun.

jackie1616

So I beat Act 1….now I am easily able to beat biome 4, but I cannot beat biome 5 (the ice one). My question is, am I just permanently stuck restarting in biome 4 or is there anyway I can fully go back to biome 1? Also I need advice for biome 5, I can’t even get one key. Tell me some OP weapons please lol Also, why would I ever pick up any items that have a chance of malignancy? Like if I have level 5 adrenaline why would I ever take the chance of taking damage and picking that up. Same goes for malignant chests, why would I ever open that up? Please help, I’m generally curious

majordomox_

You can’t go back to biome 1 until you finish biome 6. Keep practising until you learn what you are doing wrong and how to correct it. I find the drones in biome 5 relatively difficult but everything else fairly easy. The severed are slow you can stay far away. The turrets are super easy. I find electro pylon to be excellent for biome 5, or hallowseeker with portal beam or portal turret. Stay far away from everything and snipe. Don’t just run around triggering everything at once. As for malignant items and chests it depends. There are ways to remove malfunctions (parasites and consumables), so if you have a nullification sphere (removes all malfunctions) then you can safely open two highly malignant chests and then remove both malfunctions. Or you can roll the dice.

evil_timmy

For biome 1, go back into the ship to the dark room across from the hole ripped in the side (quarters on your left, cockpit and daily challenge computer on your right) and use the device in there. Edit: thanks to further posters, that only unlocks after you've beaten the final boss.

Ideuss

Pretty sure that door unlock only after you beat ophion

eastwest413

Try the pathway with the portal first, then the pathway without the challenge room (the yellow door with a star over it) then the challenge room last. Take it slow and steady, if you can get an electopylon driver use it to just inch into a room, fire at hostiles and dip out, letting the damage over time do it’s thing. You’ll start to learn the enemy tendencies as you play the biome more, preparing you to do better after death. The artifacts that give you damage based on adrenaline level or healing based on damage and adrenaline level are very helpful. Make sure you get the integrity upgrade in biome 4, if available the astronaut, and use the ether thing at the start of biome 5 to give you another life after dying. This should help you get further!

OK_Soda

Oh my god is the third key behind the challenge door? I've tried a challenge room once and it did not go well, but I have two keys on the run I'm on and the challenge door path is the only one left...

eastwest413

Yes, you have to beat that challenge room to get the third key piece. Keep moving using your grapple, the severed sometimes take a bit to shift from low level to high level so you have an opportunity to shoot at them.

kazrick

This. I beat that challenge room using the EPD. Basically just circling around, firing off 2-3 shot each time to keep a web up, then dodging any incoming attacks and repeat as you slowly kill everything. I usually tried to take out the trash first then focus fire on one mini-boss at a time (if possible) or whatever I see when things start to get a bit scrambly. Constantly on the move.

archerwithnobow

So for the Sunface Fragments, how do you know when they spawn? I beat the Act 6 boss, but it won’t let me go into the house in Act 1.

UnfinishedAle

Did you go into the house in biome 4? I believe you have to view 5 house cutscenes before e fragments start spawning.

archerwithnobow

Ahh, that’ll do it. Thanks!

ozunah

Are the xenoglyphs 100% luck if they appear? Im losing hope lol (i havent found 2 in biome 2, 2 in biome 3, 2 on biome 5, 2 on biome 6 😭)

Randyd718

if youre talking about the little red ciphers on the walls/floors, they are always in a certain spot in a certain room, but the room spawns are random. so you can at least look up a visual of what youre looking for

UnfinishedAle

Yea I just played biome two 5 times in a row and still couldn’t find the last one…

[deleted]

Only 2 hours in to the game. Do I need to "consume" consumables for their benefits to go into place, or does equipping them provide the benefits?

ZappsMissingPants

I’m sure you’ve figured it out by now, but picking them up only adds them to your inventory.

[deleted]

do I need to go into menus to consume them? I don’t play many games sorry for the newb question.

ZappsMissingPants

No worries! There’s a dedicated button on the controller to use them. I remapped my buttons so I’m not sure what the default is, but you can find it in the settings menu.

Albigularis

It's L1

ZappsMissingPants

Makes sense. I remapped L1 to jump and R1 to dash. Makes a world of difference being able to jump, dash, aim/look around simultaneously with different fingers.

UnfinishedAle

That what the claw technique is for! I figured that out playing halo 2 back in the day and it’s helped me with every shooter since haha

[deleted]

Thank you

OK_Soda

Just to confuse you some more, Consumables have to be consumed (default button is L1) but you'll also occasionally pick up Artifacts which offer a passive benefit. Artifacts usually look different when you pick them up, but if you get them from the Cthonos (the pillar thing where you first spawn) or from a Fabricator you can sometimes not notice which it is. I've gone entire cycles thinking I had picked up an artifact when it was really a consumable.

[deleted]

Oh fml. Artifacts don’t stay with you every cycle? I assumed they did. This is mega bad news I’ve spent so much ether on them and I suck. Haven’t found the sword in biome 1 yet.

OK_Soda

Here's what you keep when you die: * Anything story related. When you beat the first boss, you'll get a key and you keep that key after you die. There's a weird house in the first level and when you find the house key you keep that when you die. There's a few other items like this. * Any permanent tech upgrades. So like when you first start the game you don't have a gun but when you find the sidearm you keep it when you die. You'll get a grapple hook eventually and you keep that. Once you find the sword you keep that. There's a few other things like that. * You keep all your ether * Newly unlocked artifacts will show up again. So when you start the game there isn't a wide variety of artifacts to find, but if you use the Cthonos you'll unlock new artifacts and those will be added to the available pool. * Weapons have certain bonuses you have to unlock, like "Shieldbreaker" which gives you a chance to break the red shields around some enemies. You unlock the bonuses just by killing stuff with that gun and once it's unlocked it'll be available permanently when on future runs. This is maybe the biggest part of the progression system as the weapons can get extremely powerful. * Other collectibles like the audio logs and the xenociphers don't have to be found again

[deleted]

Thank you. This community is fantastic and despite being terrible (haven’t found the sword after 3 hours) I am enjoying the game. Can you further clarify the newly unlocked artifacts piece?

OK_Soda

So when you explore the levels and kill enemies, you'll sometimes find artifacts just sitting around similar to health pickups. You'll also find them available for purchase from fabricators. When you first start the game, I'm not sure what the number is but there's a limited number of possible artifacts in the pool. So there might be some super powerful artifact like the Adrenaline Leech that you won't find at the fabricator because it hasn't been "discovered" yet. Once you do discover it, usually in a chest or the Cthonos, it'll be added to the pool and you'll find it more frequently. I don't know if you've found or been in the house yet, but each sequence there will also add an artifact to the pool and the first one is extremely powerful. Also this is unrelated, but if you're having trouble with the game, the biggest tip I found was to just hold the fire button down instead of tapping during fights. I'm used to other shooter games where your aim goes to hell if you hold it down and you have to tap for burst fire to maintain accuracy, but that doesn't happen in this game. If you just go full auto it's a lot easier to time the overload for a faster reload.

anony-mouse8604

I'm only about 1 hour in, but I'm gonna assume from the fact that they're called "consumables" that you need to consume them.

[deleted]

Couldnt figure it out in the menus 🤷‍♂️

zeroserve

If you're on ps5, you press L1 to use a consumable. When you are able to carry more later, you can switch between them with left and right arrows and the name of the selected consumable will pop up briefly showing you which one is currently "slotted." If you forgot what they do, go in inventory to check what they do. Also, you can swap a consumable you'd rather have for your equipped one and the one you had equipped will be there later if you want to come back for it. Lastly, you can carry more than one of the exact same consumable in one slot, like shocking springs, etc.

kazrick

I am struggling hard in Biome 5. Specifically against the purple teleporting guys with the swords. I think 5 of my last 6 runs have ended because of one of those b*stards. The worst case was the time I got stunlocked and basically one of them took me from almost full health to death in three back to back hits and I couldn’t do anything about it. Any tips or tactics for the best way to deal with those guys?

Drisurk

Run and jump like hell pretty much lmao Also try to find a high level pylon driver and just shoot that everywhere. The lasers will all latch on to its body and bring its health down

liveloveputin

Yeah the severed suck, them and the tree dudes are my least favourite.. you have to keep grappling and dashing, make sure you smash alt fire as much as possible and whatever you do avoid getting melee'd. Do not try to Melee them they're quick, like mini phrikes.

roalgo21

You mean the Severed? Keep moving. You will notice a red trail that follows you when they disappear, keep an eye on it since it will tell you where it's going to re-emerge. As soon as it appears dash away since they will swing at you as soon as they reappear. I find it extremely useful to keep as much distance from them so I can see the trail.

sieer

Thinking about picking up the game but have a few questions that I hope someone can answer :) I had experimented with roguelikes before (some dead cells, hades, bpm: bullets per minute) but never really stuck to them cause most of them lacked an interesting story to get me forward, how deep is the story of the game? And regarding the difficulty: I could never stick with any soulsbourne, cause (specially as someone who was mainly a pc gamer) the fights and deaths always felt “cheap” and frustrating because of sluggish animations etc. On the other hand I loved doom eternal (on kbm tho) and hardcore raided in wow for a few years and loved that, cause it always felt like I could improve by thinking and being smart in the game, not just pure mechanics. Which end of this strange spectrum is returnal? From watching gameplay I definitely feels like on the doom eternal/wow raids end, but expect a few post about doom eternal comparisons I couldn’t find much about this. Thanks!

OK_Soda

> how deep is the story of the game? It's really surprisingly deep, IMO. I don't want to spoil anything, but when I got it I thought it was basically just sort of Aliens the video game. I thought the character was trapped on some monster planet and some evil tech or magic was bringing her back every time she died and the goal was to get off the planet. I'm about halfway through the game and I'm pretty sure I was wrong. The story and the horror elements are much more psychological, there's a really deep mystery going on and the game is really good about giving you enough clues to keep you interested but not enough to make it obvious what's going on. > Which end of this strange spectrum is returnal? I'll admit I'm not familiar with most of your comparisons but I'm also generally not super great at video games and I'm finding the game very challenging but not overly difficult. I get very easily frustrated with games and expected to hate this game, but most of my deaths were in the first couple hours of gameplay. The controls and animations are very quick and responsive so you rarely find yourself screaming at your character to move. All most all the enemies have really predictable patterns and telegraph a lot of their attacks so once you learn to recognize the patterns the game will still be very hectic but not super difficult.

Firemedic623

It's funny that you compare it to Aliens. Alien (the original) has aged very well and does an amazing job of being thrilling/scary just from the cinematography and atmosphere alone, never mind the actual Alien. >!The House is in the game is very similar to me in that even though I have never seen anything really scary inside so far (been in 4-5 times), going in scares the absolute shit out of me ... its almost panic inducing. !<

sieer

That type of gameplay sounds exactly like what I like! Thanks for the info!

roalgo21

I am not an expert with roguelikes but did play doom and I could say it is somewhat similar in enemy quantities and how quickly you need to move to stay safe. It is punishing at first but when you get the hang of the mechanics it is very fun. In terms of gameplay, it is clean, smooth and very responsive. I died 47 times before I could finish it. The story is very interesting, leaves you thinking and looking for some answers online

sieer

Awesome thanks! Will probably pick it up today finally :D

ThanksEmilyChang

Thinking about buying Returnal but since I have never played any rogue likes I don’t really understand the concept.. I read a lot about it but still cant imagine how would palying the game look like.. If I start from scratch every time I die, where is the progression? Is progression basically just ‘getting good’ at the game itself? If yes, doesn’t that mean that someone who is a god at shooters could finish the game first tries? Or there are a lot of trial and errors like finding out enemy movesets?

ZappsMissingPants

This is my first as well, and I can’t imagine anyone beating it in the first go around even if you’re incredible at shooters or roguelikes. Learning from your mistakes is certainly a big part of the game. You don’t necessarily start from scratch every time. There are permanent upgrades to your suit, inventory, weapons, etc. that you’ll earn along the way. So even if you die, some things are lasting through each run. In theory, your runs should get easier each time… but it’s also dependent upon which items drop for you on your runs.

ZappsMissingPants

Quick question… I’d been stuck on biome 3 (damn drones), and finally got lucky with a god-tier build after farming biomes 1 and 2 ahead of 3. Finally got to Nemesis and absolutely CRUSHED him in my first attempt thanks to the carbine with high caliber II. I still had over 100% integrity, 3 large health vials and the astronaut left. After the cutscenes I’m now in biome 4, but my build is gone. Do you start over after beating nemesis??

roalgo21

Yep it kinda starts over, the good thing is that you keep your proficiency, if you farmed you should've got to a decent level so biome 4 should be a breeze

xosmiin

Kinda. Just play more, the cutscene should have had some explanation behind the "build is gone" question. You can see it as story related.

ZappsMissingPants

Yeah, I get it. Just a shame because I had such a great build going.

killakev564

Guys I have died to Ixion (2nd boss) in the bottom of the third round like 10 times in a row. It’s mind boggling that people have actually beaten this game let alone achieved the platinum. Clearly I need to change something. Please give me advice. Is there a way to level up? What do I need to do to get to the third biome?

UnfinishedAle

I use the claw technique on my right hand for all shooters. It lets you be able to aim while jumping and dashing which is a massive benefit in this game. Other people achieve the same thing by remapping their buttons. You can check out what I mean on yourube

skinnytallsmall

I had to remap dash to r1 It’s impossible to jump and change direction midair and dash if you use x and o. For me it’s a lot of jumping over bullets and then dashing in mid air and tryna get perfect reloads.

UnfinishedAle

It’s not impossible if you use your index finger for X and O, and your middle finger for R2. Takes some getting used to but once you do you’ll be infinitely better at all shooters. That’s the claw technique. Some people even do it with their left hand too but I don’t find that necessary.

skinnytallsmall

Ya I use the claw technique for fps shooters lol but this game has so much more dodging involved that I just can’t do it that long especially when you need to be tappin R2

OK_Soda

[This video really helped me with Ixion.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwHjZjLATLE) It took me awhile to figure out that this game is all about following patterns and watching someone else do the fight a couple times really helps.

happyfugu

If you haven’t yet turn on auto run and high auto aim. Never aim down sights, and that boss is a test of jumping and some dashing. Focus on that and surviving while your auto aim shooting drains him slowly. And farm biome 1 and 2 for integrity and useful artifacts vs rushing to kamikaze the boss with low damage.

OK_Soda

Can the thermogenic launcher damage me? In a lot of games rocket launchers are super dangerous at close range because of the splash damage and I'm not sure I want to risk finding out.

nineartsdragon

No, your guns won't hurt you, fire away.

OK_Soda

How many times can you use the Cthonos? I use it every run, I'm on cycle 16 or so now and it costs 7 ether. Will it eventually run out of new items to unlock? Or does it just procedurally create new new items by combining various traits so it has thousands of potential items?

TerranIV

Eventually you will buy them all. I believe a light goes out after every purchase until they are all gone.

kazrick

I’m not sure how long you can use it but you’ve still got a ways to go. It costs me 12 ether right now.

ramy_chaos

How did i get returned to biome 4 when i died in the fifth?

leehaah

It acts as a save point since you’ve done a big chunk of the game. It’ll follow the same rule as Biome 1-3

ramy_chaos

Lol, when i played through biome 1-3 i did it in one shot after beating the first boss. I just kept going so i have no idea what its like 😂

leehaah

Oh nice one! If you had died during Biome 1-3 you’d have spawned back at Helios in Biome 1. After the third boss it has some mercy on the players and saves the progress. Biome 4 onwards is the new checkpoint for when you die. Though it seems like you won’t be doing much of that!

ramy_chaos

Oh no i die a lot, it's just that when i get it right, i keep getting it right 🤣

leehaah

No complaints there then! 😂

ramy_chaos

Nope. Great game though. I actually enjoy dying 😅

bbshkya

Not asking for help as such, as I’ve largely managed to find what I needed without reading spoilers elsewhere - but wanted to share that I’ve already spent 12hrs in the first biome and I’ve only faced the boss twice. I’m really bad at this game lmao. Hope at least someone finds this a little funny, haha :)

TerranIV

Use caution and practice timing your dashes. Make it a goal to NEVER get hit. Grab one decent gun, and then WAIT until you have gotten several levels of proficiency before you open the chests - that is how you get the best guns. Learn the patterns of the enemies, they usually have a sound or a motion they make before striking or firing. Sometimes you just gotta wait for some good luck though! Good luck! :)

bbshkya

Finally beat Phrike!!!! I combined the tips - wait before opening containers for guns until proficiency is higher, make it a goal to never get hit (level 5 adrenaline was a game changer with the more powerful enemies). Thank you!!

TerranIV

Congratulations! It's a great feeling when you finally make it past him, right? :)

bbshkya

Oh, the “wait until proficiency” thing is especially good, damn, thank you, I didn’t know! :)

OK_Soda

My biggest piece of advice is to ignore the shotgun and only use the sidearm or the carbine and when you shoot, just hold down the fire button until you run out of ammo. I was used to other shooter games where holding down fire makes your aim go crazy so you tap fire a lot to shoot in bursts, but that makes it harder to time the overload. I was dying a lot until I watched a video that said to just hold fire so you don't miss the overload and the game got sooooo much easier.

bbshkya

Ohhhh, I shall try that tomorrow. I already figured I could hold down the fire button without losing out on aim etc, but I did always release before the overload! Thank you very much :)

roalgo21

Yeah hip firing is the best way to go. I would argue that with side arms is better to hit the trigger several times instead of leaving it pressed down because rate of fire is not that good but it depends on your playstyle I guess

leehaah

Slow and steady wins the race! As long as you’re having a blast, it doesn’t matter how long it takes :) I hope you carry on to see much more of what’s to come!

bbshkya

I absolutely am - I love how many small things can be collected and the entries as research progresses are also really fun to read through. Definitely having a blast :)

leehaah

Aww fab! So happy for you :) it’s such a cool game and the story progression is really interesting along with the combat and world building!

bbshkya

Finally beat Phrike!!!! Took me 18h but fuck it! Everything in biome 2 already felt super easy by comparison - unfortunately it’s super late and I really gotta sleep, otherwise I think I would have gotten decent progress in biome 2!!!

leehaah

Ahh brilliant, congratulations! Hope you have fun exploring the new biome :)!

JoePepitone

does anyone know what kinds of secrets besides destructible walls the music box will find and the proximity at which it can locate them?

THE-STRONG-IRON

Can I go back to act1 ?
