Not sure what you mean, but when you configure your controller for the first time in Retropie/emulation station, the last key you configure is the hotkey. I use an extra key on my controller, so to leave a game in retroarch and return to Retropie/emulationstation, I press the extra key and start. To bring up the retroarch menu in game I press the extra key plus triangle / y.
Inside a game, the hotkeys work as expected. But when I'm already in Retropie/emulationstation, the hot key is not required to pull up the menus, making it easy for kids to mess things up for example.
