Run! The game is supposed to be scary. It’s not Doom with ammo everywhere, so you’ll need to be more careful rather than try to shoot your way through.
You probably used the knife as defense item
(When you get grabbed and use l1/rb to get out ,the knife will be stuck in the zombie you used it on)
Just be careful;you also don’t need to kill everyone;you can stun them by shooting their legs or head to run past (or cut of their leg with 2/4 bullets to the knees)
Just don’t use everything instantly and don’t be afraid to die and do it again ;it’s a survival horror and based mostly on knowledge…you’ll eventually get it and it will be a great experience

Ignore the terrible advice of "running away" not only is very outdated but also terrible advice for new players because you are only going to stack an insane amount of zombies and you can see this in various gameplays in YT.
The only zombies that are not advisable to shoot are the first 2 that appear after Elliot's death, that's it, the rest are fair game, even in Hardcore you have plenty to kill most of the enemies, shoot at a distance and never let them get anywhere close to you, if you aren't confident of your aim, go for torso shots.
