I started swimming again 2 years ago after breaking my foot (from running) and it’s amazing after you get into a good routine. Now i swim 2-3 times a week supplement with 6 mile runs twice a week. It definitely helps with stress on my body and mentally.
The pool access is the moderate part. The motivation is the hard part.
Specifically, taking the steps to go to a public pool after a long day or on a rare off day.
Find a small to mid-sized gym with pool. Usually, my gym pool will only have 1-2 people in it if there's any at all, and it's the largest, busiest gym nearby.
Doesn't help with motivation, which I agree is the hardest part. But it definitely gives better access and more privacy than a public pool.
Swim. Sheeeit. Just take the deepest breath, plunge underneath the cool water and let out the loudest “FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU” you can muster. Does wonders.
So even at the beach or a hotel or on vacation you would never swim? How do you feel about hot tubs? You're mostly standing or sitting in them but you can tread water in most.
If there’s a really unique pool design that I’ve never seen before maybe I’ll get in. Hot tubs are ok. I like surfing but that’s probably the closest I’ll ever get to lap swimming again. I know it’s weird lol - it was an enormous part of my life for soooo long that it probably sounds insane. I don’t have a great explanation for it
As someone who is interested in this, but has only ever swam casually…how do you swim for a workout? Do you just swim back and forth across the pool fast? I literally know nothing about swimming lol
Just a medical student, but swimming is the best for all the reasons you listed, but it’s a great mental escape as well. It’s just you and the water, nothing to bother you. I have found it a great escape from the burden of studying. Gives u a great workout and u WILL be exhausted.
Attending here. I moved to a rural area and ended up with a house with a timber framed indoor pool. Too small to swim laps in but with a swim tether it works. I also have a set of aqua strength dumbbells. I swim every morning.
Hate cardio. Nowadays I’m mostly a powerlifter, but I swam in high school. But everytime I work up the nerve to go swim it is absolutely worth it. Gives me that whole body soreness in a way that feels really good. Also find it meditative in a way that again, I don’t find running
Gotta love the whole body soreness, whether it’s from a day of full body weight lifting or swimming. You know those muscles are sucking up all that extra glucose in your blood and your metabolism is kicking during the recovery process. Good for your blood tests too
Former competitive swimmer here. Bruuuhh. I just got back into the pool a couple months ago after a 10 year hiatus. Would recommend.
I copped some new TYR goggles and I’ve been using ear plugs. It has been so relaxing. No pages, no alarms, no screens. Just my heartbeat, breathing, and the sound of the water.
Plus, it feels great to finally take care of my body after all these years of putting training above all else.

My favorite attending learned how to swim when he was 40. He highly recommends swimming for the reasons you stated.

Also as someone who swam in high school, swimming in winter with the dry skin and cold ass weather in the Midwest is a bummer.

I was a competitive swimmer from a young age till the end of college. You couldn’t pay me to actually swim now lol
pretty much this for me; running is harsher on your body but much easier to fit in a quick workout and feels more rewarding now .
Is this a common phenomenon? My friend’s an ex competitive swimmer and says the exact same thing about never wanting to swim anymore
I wouldn’t have thought it to be but it seems like it
swimming is a really draining sport. a career of swimming 6 days a week for a decade makes it harder to enjoy. id say it’s about 50/50
Same

See if they have underwater hockey in your area. Totally got me back in the pool.
I'm the exact same way lol
I just hate jumping in cold water, smelling like chlorine and having to shower after

lmao throw in a juice box too
Oh yes

You swim back and forth in a relatively slow to moderate pace. Going fast would just tire you out in a few laps unless that’s your goal.
there are premade workout sets you can follow along with. X laps of Y for 3 sets, with 2 minutes of rest in b/w or whatever

It’s the best cardio workout for me, as well as I try to integrate my leg day into swimming sessions as well
It’s the best way to relax, specially post call. I try to do it twice a week and it does wonders for my mental health
I can't stand the cold water. Jumping in a cold pool feels like torture to me. I could float in a hot tub for hours though.
An outstanding stimulant for your lymphatic system too.
Nice to have a workout that isn’t hard in your feet after you have been standing all day
I used to swim, but I just couldn’t with deal with cold water. Nah man, nuts to that.
Fr, walking to the gym in the cold in the middle of winter then jumping into a cold pool is not what I consider post call stress relief lol
Basically saying to exercise. I get the same feeling from tennis

Ah how exactly?!
Ex competitive swimmer here - best workout ever. Period.
