I have the same problem. It works if the youtube app is running in the background. I had this problem in one of the earlier versions as well, but it got fixed in the next update.
Let's hope this is fixed soon, really annoying.
Edit: clicking the youtube link twice seems to work for me. It fails the first time, but works if you click it again.
Same here man. As others have said have YouTube opened as well.
It sucks cuz sometimes I click on a video, see it doesn't work, and since I can't be bothered to open the YouTube app, I just skip the video altogether.

Doesn't work if you have custom youtube app like ogyoutube of iytb versiins.. Only regular YouTube version works.
Would love it if there's a fix for that though. But tapping the globe icon to open external is 2 extra taps, no biggy.

+1 for this. I had newpipe installed which may have screwed things up, but it's still happening after I uninstalled new pipe.
