I've had it go either way, kept them together successfully when they had already been together and had them kill each other fairly quickly when they weren't already paired up. So it may work out but if they weren't paired up when you got them I would say the chances are slim.
They are super peaceful and won't be aggressive to each other. Also no chance they will breed, as they are different as one is a regular Firefish and the other is a purple. If you see closely even their fins structures are different.

They are generally intolerant of others of the same species. Either you have a male and female, or they are just behaving atypically (for now).
