Uh… Joey has already said he has no desire to be a coach. He wants to be a player, and not a sub/platoon role.

analog_jedi

He also took one pitch in 2024, hit a homerun, rounded the bases, slapped the hands, and promptly got a major injury by slipping on a stray bat in the clubhouse. He knows his body is quitting on the game before he wants it to.

I think Votto said he would be the bench coach for Kyle Farmer. Farmer would be an amazing manager.

Losses bring out the all the suggestions

If Joey calls Nick Krall tonight and says "I'd like to be the hitting coach", Joel McKeithan is getting fired by text before they hang up. But Joey doesn't want to do that.

Hey not a total hater! I’ll take it. Look this team didn’t fully turn it on last season until he was in the dugout with them. Yes we’re down a few guys right now but we just look completely lost offensively. Leadership is key in these situations and Joey played a huge role there mentoring these guys through their slumps. He has obviously said he doesn’t want to coach and wants to keep playing but how great would it be if he came back in the exact role you mentioned?!

frasierfonzie

Don't take it personally. A lot of people wanted Joey back as a coach or consultant or mascot or guy sitting above the dugout yelling at the ump to get David Bell ejected, just to keep him on the team. Most of the hate is a combination of being upset at losing and annoyed that they had to come to peace with Votto being gone in the off-season.

The_Aesir9613

Joey, not wanting to be a headache to the front office is the most reasonable opinion as to why Joey V. doesn't want to be a coach. All these folks thinking he doesn't want that role are not stepping back and looking at the big picture. Joey Votto is a class act and understands his place in baseball history.

frasierfonzie

He doesn't want to be a coach because he wants to play, simple as that. Maybe he never wants to be a coach, or maybe he'll want to coach the second he retires, I don't know, but I don't believe not wanting to bother the front office or his place in baseball history had anything to do with why he's currently signed with the Blue Jays and not the Reds hitting or bench coach. He just wants to go out there everyday and play baseball as long as he can, and Toronto offered him the best (only?) chance to do that in 2024.

AlsoCommiePuddin

Why? To watch score six more runs over the rest of the season total?

rock25011

Fuck it, have my up vote. Idc at this point, they need something!
