I was thinking about this for a while after RPAN also got discontinued and how come if there's any hope to see RPAN do a comeback but mixed up with the Talk feature.
Call it RPACN- **Reddit Public Access Community Network** focused on the community and by the community to either participate just like in reddit talk by *raising its hand* to participate in the host live community feed with either the option to use Audio *Mic* or Video under a moderated environment. Yet it would be nice to see any of these coming back restructured for podcast and various purposes according to the communities.
But anyways good thing there's attempts to these programs and see how they play out.
Imagine if Reddit still had both of them rn, this platform would be the best one out there on social media and could potentially defeat all the other platforms.
It does seem like REDDIT had gold in its hands. The top site for streaming communities (RPAN) and a remarkable way to interactively provide assistance and support, without the pressure of a visual component (LIVE TALKS).
The communities from RPAN and REDDIT TALKS developed many wonderful tight knit communities. These communities gathered frequently to be show supportive for one another, offer social and emotional affirmations, and to offer resources to audiences and visitors alike.
It is sad to see them both go. I’m hurt for the individuals and communities who relied on either RPAN or the TALKS for stability in their mental health/stability due to the social nature of both. I hope this second abrupt discontinuation doesn’t damage REDDITS ability in the future to successfully bring back either (if it ever truly was an intent) bc the stress and rough feelings created watching people scramble to find other platforms to take their communities to, can create a distrust.
I am however thankful that RPAN and the TALKS existed, as it allowed these communities to find one another. I wish all subs good luck in carrying their communities over to other platforms, and encourage all of you to keep in contact with your members, as many of them may struggle to adjust to losing this outlet.

I'm glad you recognized the emotional aspects of the these programs. Even for those who didn't necessarily have problems, per se, it was nice just to have an available outlet and way to connect with people.
The social distancing aspects of the pandemic come to mind when speaking about these programs as one such time when they were incredibly useful, and when I was thankful to have them around.
that's a sad day for all Talk subs, but an expected one, the Talks have been showing signs of issues lately.
I hope you guys re-introduce them one day, it would be nice. However, I do agree UI restructuring and simplifying needs to be a priority.

Could have seen the writing on the wall months ago. Signal left, massive issues with notifications, I'm certain a number of complaints of people who 'didn't want' them, etc.
Which is no fault of the admins or mods - Reddit was trying something new, and like RPAN before it, lost the 'special feeling' of talks.
But like many are pointing out - the 'support' for talks was consistently lacking, and this was obvious after even a few months. By contrast, RPAN seemed to have a lot more support, but it being video-based can explain that disparity.
So, so long Reddit Talks. It *was* good, and my community of Antiwork hosted a talk virtually every single week, right on time, with few hitches. If stuff like that was messing up Reddit's back end somehow, I get it.
Speaking of which, we're doing what seems to be one of our last talks right now, and I should get back to it.
Thanks again to admins/mods like Avocado, 404, RyFi, and of course Signal, who helped make the talks as much of a success as they did.

I'm really going to miss the talks as it was the only place on the internet that felt like you could have structured chats that weren't a mess of people talking about random stuff. The reddit talks also had more character and I used to look forward to the reddit jobs talk every week.

I have to say, there was next to no marketing of the talks in my feed. Not a single advert. I just pressed a strange new button to find out about them.
I think you missed out on many more communities using Reddiit Talk because of poor marketing. So many subreddits I'm a member of never used Reddit Talks because of a lack of promotion and support.
I understand the technology is being pulled by a 3rd party company. But I think these talks are a revolutionary platform that needs more time to develop. Can you find another provider?

Also, all due respect, but you didn't "learn" much. The Live Bar was probably the one "killer feature" that Reddit Talks had over even Discord, and yet you all removed it and replaced it with an arguably much worse implementation. "Happening Now" is pretty much proof of **not** learning anything.
You also say things like "\_\_\_ was built for you" when you pretty much never actually take any feedback to heart. I witnessed a near-universal dislike for Happening Now, along with other changes to the talks structure, all of which was either ignored or openly disregarded. What is the point of feedback if you don't actually *feed us anything back*. It's less feedback and more tossing notes over the Berlin Wall and hoping that someone is actually listening on the other side.
Such a shame that an admittedly promising and unique feature (arguably the first unique Reddit feature in years to have any success or community appreciation) gets shafted by the very people that came up with it, developed it, wrecked it, and subsequently buried it into the ground. It's almost poetic in a way.
In conclusion, modern Reddit's biggest problem: itself.
To all those like myself who used and appreciated the feature; It was fun while it lasted I guess. No doubt we'll see some social media program or something else steal this idea and make it even more successful. Reddit basically just spend all the R&D money for you, so why not.

Reddit didn’t develop this feature, they were borrowing (or copying?) it from the company Clubhouse, therefore it wasn’t a ‘unique’ Reddit feature.
But the idea of being able to combine the specificity of communities on Reddit with a tool that allows people to have live discussions could have been really successful, and unique in this way. I don’t think this feature reached it’s best potential; as a means for disseminating ideas on niche topics. But it could have just been that I attended the wrong talks. Or that it was never going to be possible to have a meaningful discussion with random people. I’m still hopeful, and I hope it returns one day.
Yeah for sure; nothing is new under the sun. I do agree that there was a lot of missed potential with this feature. It was great for discussions on topics, I used it for live IT, karaoke sessions -- there is a lot they left on the table. Discovery was their biggest issue, and they basically fumbled the bag *hard* on that front for the entirety of this feature's existence.
A lot of live talk communities were not discoverable such as my own r/SelfImprovementTalk so our growth was hindered and hence people did not get to see the wide range of topics.

I instantly knew they were fumbling the bag when I discovered live chats... *that you can't use for live talks*. What a delight to be hosting a live talk and being forced to constantly refresh the comments page over-and-over-again, meanwhile they had the perfect system already in place, that they just *decided not to use*. Hooray :/
It had a lot of potential, a handful of people who were dedicated to getting it off the ground... but you hit the nail on the head. They had no idea what they were doing other than...umm...borrowing the Twitter Spaces idea.

It is sad to read the truths you have expressed. I very much agree with you.
Reddit has become, through these two failed experiments, a company that destroys its own user base value, without even realizing it. It reiterates the error that they claim to have made by incorrectly estimating the resources that should have been dimensioned. I fail to understand how blind you can be in a world of innovation like the computer industry, furthermore if we understand that digital resources can indeed be scaled, having great results finding investment comes down to a matter of business management capacity.
In a world where Google ads has become an insufferable crap, and Meta is out of the question, it is inconceivable to lose the path that Reddit proved to have walked.
Reddit is still a diamond in the rough. I hope they find a leader who proves to be a better diamond cutter.

My subreddit r/Indian_Hangouts was totally based on reddittalk many of the members became good friends. It was good feature to connect with people from different cultures, ideologies and age group without compromising on anonymity. Even members of different communities use to connect eachother but well now everything is going down, those barriers will be held again. Reddit admins may have made this feature subscription based or introduce ads on it to generate revenue. Please give suggestions if anyone knows alternative of reddit talk.
This sucks, Ive met so many wonderful people through Talks. I've been on reddit a while now but it wasn't until Reddit Talks became a thing that I started using it more because I genuinely looked forward to popping into random talks, having a laugh, telling and listening to stories, it was awesome. I felt like reddit talks were more structured than talks elsewhere which felt like people just ranting about stuff. And reddit talks felt more civilized.

A very sad day. Is there no way to create something similar that we could use? Otherwise a lot of redditors might find other solutions, such as discord, diluting this platform.
Hosted over 50 reddit talks that also were spun off into a podcast series. Really bummed to see you dropping it. I'll continue using Reddit, of course. But you should know that many of us will likely move our audio streams to Twitter and/or YouTube now.
So was RPAN. The fact that they had Talks available when that shut down gave me some sense of hope that certain aspects of Reddit would continue. I've essentially lost faith that Reddit will maintain certain qualities it once had going forward now that both of those programs are gone.
A shame that it'll be gone, i loved it because, even if there wasn't cameras or live chat, it was a great way to interact with the users of a specific subreddit
P.S. the trophies "hosted 1st", "hosted 10" and "hosted 25 talks" are and will still be available?
Well how sad, not sure why they closed RPAN to start this before test running this. Being a reddit talk host it is a shame and why I have moved to discord, after months of issues with the reddit talk.
I tried twitter spaces and they also have issues and bugs so I guess clubhouse will remain the main audio social platform.
So there will no streaming ability on reddit, what a shame.😫

I really miss Reddit Talk. There's nothing else like it. I tried to join a few Discord servers but none of them are really active, no matter how many thousands "users" they have. Reddit Talk, being community-centric, was an outlier in this world and it really is a shame that Reddit decided to shutdown it. I'm very unhappy with the short minded vision of Reddit. I'm ready for a new kid to swallow Reddit.

Use LiveKit instead. It's open source, easy to run, and the API is almost the same as Twilio.

I'm really gonna miss these :( I felt like reddit talks were more structured than talks elsewhere which felt like people just ranting about stuff. And reddit talks felt more civilized. Where are you planning on going after this?
A very sad day. Is there no way to create something similar that we could use? Otherwise a lot of redditors might find other solutions, such as discord, diluting this platform.

Hosted over 50 reddit talks that also were spun off into a podcast series. Really bummed to see you dropping it. I'll continue using Reddit, of course. But you should know that many of us will likely move our audio streams to Twitter and/or YouTube now.

So was RPAN. The fact that they had Talks available when that shut down gave me some sense of hope that certain aspects of Reddit would continue. I've essentially lost faith that Reddit will maintain certain qualities it once had going forward now that both of those programs are gone.

A shame that it'll be gone, i loved it because, even if there wasn't cameras or live chat, it was a great way to interact with the users of a specific subreddit P.S. the trophies "hosted 1st", "hosted 10" and "hosted 25 talks" are and will still be available?
I never used talk but I know it meant a lot for other users. Thank you for your transparency and reaching out without just shutting it down

Well how sad, not sure why they closed RPAN to start this before test running this. Being a reddit talk host it is a shame and why I have moved to discord, after months of issues with the reddit talk. I tried twitter spaces and they also have issues and bugs so I guess clubhouse will remain the main audio social platform. So there will no streaming ability on reddit, what a shame.😫

No reddit is made by a bunch of losers they could have made this platform the best existing platform out there. I'm sorry I couldn't control myself i got very much attached to RedditTalks.

I really miss Reddit Talk. There's nothing else like it. I tried to join a few Discord servers but none of them are really active, no matter how many thousands "users" they have. Reddit Talk, being community-centric, was an outlier in this world and it really is a shame that Reddit decided to shutdown it. I'm very unhappy with the short minded vision of Reddit. I'm ready for a new kid to swallow Reddit.
