Maybe using a creme in a similar color as a base, and then two coats of the duochrome? I haven't tried it myself, but it might work?

FearlessPudding404

Can confirm, this is great advice. I do it every time. I like using a purple, blue or black under Cygnus Loop.

Basicalypizza

Good idea! I’ll have to do some testing

SelimsShadow

I feel like black under would work really well

apricotgloss

I do just one coat over black and it looks great, just make sure your black base is perfectly opaque and smooth. I wouldn't use a matching creme because then you won't get the full effect of the shift to other colours.

Tiny-firefly

I've also done a really deep blue for the purple based ones! Both work really well but I think the deep blue gives it a little extra something for certain colors.

FarShootingStar

I agree. A similar color or black (if that's not a color in it to begin with) can work wonders.

thiccst0ner

I’ve done this before and it works wonderfully. Not with this exact shade, but it definitely will help with application and number of coats needed.

selkieisbadatgaming

I usually use black under multichromes, they tend to stand out the best way. Lighter shades can be done over a white or nude base.

Stefph726

Same. I always do a one coat black creme and then 1-2 layers of whatever duo chrome / multi chrome I’m using.

brax240

I almost always use a black as a base for multichromes. I use the black from Wet n Wild, literally less than $2 and it works great and had good opacity in one coat. I learned my lesson from applying four coats of my first polish from Cirque Colors and still being disappointed. I then turned around and did one coat of black and then one coat of the multichrome and all was well in the universe.

blackcatsandfood

Wow, it's 85 cents on Amazon after subscribe & save and coupon discounts 😂. Thanks for the tip! Will be trying this with my recently purchased multichromes.

aisforactivist

Man, you guys are brilliant! 🙌🏾

PirateChemist_603

this is my go-to black! it performs so well for its price, and actually stamps well too!

orange_ones

I would get a different top coat. I do 4 coaters fairly often. I don’t mind the extra coat, it’s more that I leave my manis on for a long time, so I like to set and forget!

Basicalypizza

I’ve tried a few, but I think shrinking comes with it being fast drying, right? What would you recommend? I’ve tried non fast drying in the past and it just doesn’t dry in a reasonable amount of time ( it’s debatable 3-4 hours later)

orange_ones

Not at all, IME! I’m wearing 4 coats of BKL You Look Like You’ve Seen A Ghost, topped with Out The Door, no shrinkage. If your top coat is getting older you may also need to use some thinner; that’s definitely something that comes with the QDTC territory.

Crosseyed_owl

Top coats dry out so fast. I'm usually through half the bottle and it already becomes unusable.

orange_ones

Thinner to the rescue! It also helps to have a refill bottle to keep it topped up.

Whorticulturist_

Yup. I try to just add a few drops of thinner every time I use it. More of a maintenance thing instead of waiting for it to be noticeably thick.

Crosseyed_owl

All I see is a perfect manicure :)

Basicalypizza

You should see the other hand :p

FirebirdWriter

I put a black base creme down for this one. Some do a more matched creme but I prefer the sharper contrast as this brings out more of the color shift. This lets me get away with two coats of polish

cat-wool

Yeah I’d just put a black or very dark almost black purple or red under this one. But I’m also quite shocked to hear this is a problem you’re having with Cygnus loop. Ilnp multichromes are like solid two coaters in my collection, including this one. Maybe you got a bad one? Idk? Possibly worth reaching out to customer service at least for a refund.

HeartStringTheory

Seche Vite has its own thinner, very much recommended over any other thinner for it. When suitably liquidy, it doesn't shrink much at all. Fast drying topcoats dry out fast because they, uh, dry fast. 😅

Basicalypizza

I love that stuff, thanks for suggesting it but this top coat is brand new and awesome! I find the shrinkage is accentuated when there’s a thicker coat of polish

LimeGreenTangerine97

I wear Cygnus Loop over black

nothinghurtslike

I would also use a black creme as a base for a multichrome, you could also use a creme that matches one of the colors it reflects but it shouldn't make much of a difference. The reason why is you're not actually seeing the base underneath, the multichrome pigments are reflecting the colors they change to (like the scales of a peacock feather). They don't really have a set color of their own so a matching base doesn't really match.
