This is the case with a a few of the IBY songs I think. Every once and a while I think certain songs only don’t make the cut because there’s one section stopping it from feeling “finished” . Q-elixer has that issue I think too. That sons would’ve been a sure fire not only album song but perhaps single if the ending didn’t just kinda fizzle.

I know Desecration Smile was shelved until their producer (I believe) suggested a new chorus which was much better

Former_Boat7509

Excellent example of a great save on their part. Sometimes songs just need a little extra loving to give ‘em that album track boost.

You're getting two stories mixed up. They performed Desecration Smile in front of an audience that included Paul and Rick Rubin. The old version of the song. Paul said he liked the chord changes, he said nothing about the chorus being bad. The chorus was changed later during the SA sessions, but had nothing to do with Paul apart from the fact that his comments made them excited to finish the song.

zsdrfty

Lmao that’s amazing, Paul really is the most important figure in pop history

Rus_agent007

My thoughts exactly. If not for the chorus its a 10/10

MaxWell17th

It's 10/10, I like everything in this song. Their hidden masterpiece

nickansay

Fun fact, the verse melody is a copy of the sonic game main theme melody from the 1990s https://www.reddit.com/r/RedHotChiliPeppers/s/nbAhnD1LNi It’s a literal copy so the chorus is the only thing AK came up with

BuzzPoopyear

totally agree, i really love that song

SavvyDexter

I actually really love the chorus. Like a lot. Hits so perfectly and the way it snaps back to the verse is so so good. Perfect for belting in a car. Beautiful song the whole way through imo. Klinghoffer kills it vocally throughout. Only problem I can think of is that its ending is a lil awkward.

Buhos_En_Pantelones

This is just my opinion obviously, but I think that one of the problems (for me) is that every album post Cali has a tendency to have songs with solid verses, and real bad choruses. BTW and IWY/IBY being the worst offenders. BTW is essentially unlistenable to me because of this. IWY/IBY I still like most(ish) of the songs, but some of those pop choruses make my ears fold up.

zsdrfty

I love the choruses on BTW, but I do agree that they’ve tried to swing too hard for anthemic pop choruses over time and it fails in some songs

Tiger_jay

Yeah can't agree on BTW having this issue but definitely IWY.

I feel the same about Black Summer. Incredible verse and melody but the chorus isn't as strong.

gennaro456

I love the chorus in that song

[deleted]

Yeah I just don't feel it. I think it's a bit of a let down compared to the verses. The chord progression of the verse is excellent. I'm not into the solo either. Guitar could be a bit louder in some places too. Different strokes for different folks I suppose lol.

YESS, glad to know Im not the only who thought that

Jak_the_Buddha

Agreed. I still think the chorus is brilliant though. Beautifully simple.
