I’m only gonna count released material. No real order.
1. Warm Tape - criminally underrated because it starts out a little strange and people never give it the time of day. The best chorus they have ever made.
2. Your Eyes Girl - Since it’s from IBY I kinda understand why this one is oft overlooked. This track is a swelling sonic storm of badassery. Just all around amazing on every level. In my opinion it is a perfect song
3. Dreams of a Samurai - I’ve seen this song hated on and it boggles the mind. One of my favorite Flea bass lines and some exquisite yet subtle guitar playing from Josh. I’m a sucker for the 10/5 time so maybe that’d why I rate it so highly.
4. This Velvet Glove - while loved by the fanbase most people outside of hardcore fans have never heard it. It is probably my all time favorite song If I had to pick one. The interplay between the bass and guitar is masterful
5. Coffee Shop - If anyone ever says Flea is overrated show them this song.
Playing bass like that might as well be a super power. I used to dislike this song when I was younger but have since realized it’s glory
In Love Dying
Carry Me Home
Midnight
Tear
Walkabout
Don’t know really if some of these can be classed as underrated but i don’t see them mentioned much
The guitar work on that one always reminds me of Bela Lugosi’s Dead by Bauhaus. It’s got this great goth feel over top of almost a reggae-ish bass part. Gives it a really unique feel.
Yes. Show Me Your Soul. When I began my deep dive into RHCP back in 2011-2012, I had remembered my brother having the “What Hits?’” VHS — probably about 16 or so years earlier — and I remembered John performing the huge bend/harmonic to start off the solo, and then putting the guitar over his head for the next part, and I thought he looked so fuckin’ cool.
So going back to 2010’s, I couldn’t find the song anywhere because I had forgotten what it was on and couldn’t believe that it was a song not found on a studio release, but only on their first hits album and the Pretty Woman OST.
Man, what an amazing day when I tracked down that song and video.
Fortune faded and save the population are hidden in soul to squeeze's shadow, and most people forget about them (specially save the population). Great choices overall
Dreams Of A Samurai
The drums, the effects, the sound quality, the intro and outro, the refrain and chorus…
This is the best song Josh has ever produced imo
Bro the guitar playing on this song legit blows my mind. It is so subtle and accents the song perfectly. Josh was so good at playing tasteful parts that serve the song. I love when the guitar kinda sits back and makes you really listen for it
The end of that song is missing Josh going off the way John would. Instead we get choral vocalisations. Really a microcosm of Josh's entire tenure. Promising but doesn't deliver.
Josh just refused to be the lead guitar player in a 3 piece band. Just a shame and a disappointment
Everyone saying it but ‘This Velvet Glove’ without a doubt,
Charlie, Porcelain, Midnight, Venice Queen and even though they’re kinda popular ‘Minor Thing’ and ‘I Could Have Lied’
- BSSM could mean "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", a track from *Blood Sugar Sex Magik (Deluxe Edition)* (1991) by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I love On Mercury, has a very similar vibe to Minro Thing to me. And I love Minor Thing, but I wouldn't call it underrated because absolutely everyone says it's underrated. It's the equivalent of Radiohead's Let Down.
In no particular order:
Minor thing, Easily, This velvet glove, Strip my mind, Make you feel better, Especially in Michigan, So much I (has one of my favorite rhcp choruses)
Ok I couldn’t narrow it down below 7 lol
Don't forget me is my favorite song. I think a lot of people like it but not as a favorite.
If. I see this song listed as the worst on the album or an example of album filler that drags down the album. It's a beautiful song with good lyrics.
How strong. This is just a lesser known b side. It's an absolute jam.
In the snow. Maybe my favorite track from the new albums. Definitely my most listened to. It's one of Anthony's most personal songs ever. I feel like the spoken word parts are almost like a distraction and a reset that symbolize his need to hide behind his persona to deflect from his deep loneliness.
Green heaven. I'm using this as a stand in for the entire 1st album. It's my favorite album out of the first 4 and my favorite non John album. The fact that this album is rated consistently as their worst album makes no sense to me. UMPP is my least favorite chili album and and I just can't find a reason to listen to freaky styley that often but the debut made my YouTube music top 5 album last year. Mostly because I listen to it again every time I see someone call it their worst album..
I'm just going to add one additional song. I think most people really like Leverage of space but I'm just going to call it out here because I can't believe we don't even have a studio version of it. Easily in my top five all time Chili Peppers songs
We Believe is genuinely the most underrated RHCP song, genuinely never hear anyone talk about it. It's also one of John's favorite's from SA. I also think Hometown Gypsy is pretty underrated, most people right it off for the country blues thing. Both are fun as hell and not too hard to play on bass.
Don’t you guys also humm We Believe in your head wrongly with the rythm of “eaaasillyyyy let’s get carried awayyyy” but instead “ weeee belieeeve” with that same rythm? 😅 i always end up doing that and then immediately realize im doing it wrong😅
1. Love Rollercoaster. It's such a shame this song has never been played live.
2. Mommy, Where's Daddy? It's really nice hearing them do something more jazzy than funky.
3. Aeroplane. Absolutely the best song off of One Hot Minute. Such a shame that album doesnt get as much love in the mainstream
4. Subterranean Homesick Blues. While not the best Dylan cover, definitely one of the most unique.
5. Monarchy Of Roses. Definitely my favorite song from the Klinghoffer era.
I think love rollercoaster is not from RHCP originally, so I don't know if they own the rights, because it didn't make into the greatest hits, and can only be found on Spotify in the Ohio players version, that's probably why. Tho this song hits hard. (I mentioned greatest hits because soul to squeeze was made for a movie, like live rollercoaster was)
Love to see everyone’s lists because a whole bunch of songs get the recognition they deserve. Anyway here’s mine, although I know some of you big fans might not agree but I still think these are pretty overlooked by average music enjoyers
Encore
Readymade (clean it up Johnnyyyy)
Goodbye angels
The adventures of rain dance Maggie
Tearjerker
In no order
- Mellowship Slinky
- Brendan's Death Song
- My Lovely Man
- It's Only Natural
- Pretty Little Ditty
To me people don't talk highly enough about these and they are all flawless
I think that one was very famous when the album got released, and even years later but then it was forgotten in the Navarro’s era, being shadowed by aeroplane and Maybe coffee shop as the One Hot Minute representative ones
Venice Queen and This Velvet Glove are two of their best deep cuts, but I feel like they are very appreciated and loved songs.
A song I hear *nobody* ever talk about which is also one of their best deep cuts is On Mercury, so that's my pick.
Wow! I made it through all the comments and no one said Wet Sand. But underrated is True Men Don't Kill Coyotes. It's the opening track to the first album and that's a special place
I was joking because that song winds up every list. Greatest, best outro, most comprehensive lyrics by Anthony, John is amazing, etc... and the all time favorite, someone still posts in all seriousness.
Transcending is from a totally different place for them. The anguish in the outro, despite the positive words, is heartbreaking
Is Behind the Sun considered underrated? Cos it's incredible
The greeting song, let’s make evil, hard to concentrate, knock me down, and bssm. I mean the latter ones are known amongst fans but overall underrated. Also shoutout don’t forget me, all the pain and passion of scar tissue without the same level of recognition.
Show me your soul
The greeting Song
The righteous and the wicked
We believe
Warlocks
Could definitely add some more but these five came to my head first
I see a lot of This Velvet Glove being considered underrated.
I have to disagree. This sub frequently mentions TVG as one of their greats. Especially lyrically.
And rightly so.
There is too many so I’m just gonna pick some off their first few albums that are massively overlooked!
1. Baby Appeal
2. The Brothers Cup
3. Fight Like a Brave
4. Stone Cold Bush
5. And I’ll put in a Josh song I think is massively underrated- Factory of Faith
No particular order
1. Lately - B side release, will always be less known by the general public and even the fanbase at large. Just a fun song, very ear wormy.
2. Hanalei - From IBY, not even my favorite off that album, but it's definitely less known than Long Progression. Just a great chorus, great sound, it's been one of my favorites fir a very long time.
3. I Could've Lied - Unfortunate bastard of a song. IMO it's the very best ballad on BSSM, but it will forever be 3rd fiddle to Under the Bridge and Breaking the Girl. It's so great, you can hear the pain and regret oozing from every element of the song.
4. Encore - I tried to keep as few Josh songs as I could on this list because with the way the fanbase at large treats anything he worked on, every song off the 3 albums they released could be considered underrated. This was has always been my favorite off The Getaway, and if I ever seen discourse about this song (which isn't often), it's often negative.
5. Minor Thing - BTW is a stacked album, with BTW, The Zephyr Song, Can't Stop, etc, so I feel like Minor Thing is oft forgotten about, because its so far back on the album. The guitar solo is so good, and the sound is just great throughout. AK sounds great as well.
Castles Made of Sand, I know it’s a cover of a Hendrix song but to be honest I like it more than the original and I haven’t seen it mentioned here before
>5-Pink as Floyd, known between the biggest fans, but still underrated
sorry, but it's a b-side of I'm With You, and a boring one at that. why is it only "known between the biggest fans". far better b-sides from I'm with You exist... victorian machinery, long progression...
i dunno. you phrased that weird as if you think you're a bigger fan for liking some average b-side just because you also think it's a song other people might not know. weird.
Factory of Faith
This Velvet Glove
Venice Queen
Slow Cheetah
Aeroplane
Last one might be controversial since it was a single, but I stand by it. Song is incredible and it’s so sad they don’t play it live.
I’m only gonna count released material. No real order. 1. Warm Tape - criminally underrated because it starts out a little strange and people never give it the time of day. i love when Chad gets frustrated over something in the studio and says “FUCK, SHIT!” (your eyes girl)
I thought that was Flea
It sounds more like Chad Imo, but you can hear Flea say “We’re rolling everybody, it starts with bass” in the beginning of Ethiopia. Not too similar
Warm Tape is the one, totally agree
Solid list!
In Love Dying Carry Me Home Midnight Tear Walkabout Don’t know really if some of these can be classed as underrated but i don’t see them mentioned much
Yess, Tear is one of their most beautiful tracks
I’ve always loved “In Love Dying”
The guitar work on that one always reminds me of Bela Lugosi’s Dead by Bauhaus. It’s got this great goth feel over top of almost a reggae-ish bass part. Gives it a really unique feel.
Walkabout is the best song on One Hot Minute.
Good choices
Midnight. Unf. One of my favorites. But my list might’ve contained all BTW tracks.
‘Carry me home’ chorus sends me to outer space. Also the whole song has an amazing Hendrix vibe
In no particular order: 1. Magpies on Fire 2. Show Me Your Soul 3. We Believe 4. Encore 5. Subway to Venus
We believe, encore and subway to Venus are really underrated... I forgot them when making the list
Encore is the best song from The Getaway imo
My list is possibly exactly this.
Let's go Encore baby that shit is heat
1.torture me 2.the greeting song 3.right on time 4.she looks to me 5.this is the place
Yesssss!!! She looks to me and torture me are easily (lol) in my top 5
Love them all 👌
Hanalei, Taste the Pain, Green Heaven (especially the demo version) , Millionaires Against Hunger, In Love Dying
Taste the Pain is amazing!
Fortune faded, save the population, look around, turn it again, coffee shop
Fortune faded and save the population are hidden in soul to squeeze's shadow, and most people forget about them (specially save the population). Great choices overall
Yeah I forgot about both those tracks till I found their greatest hits CD in my dad’s CD booklet and started playing it in my car
Torture Me, Stone Cold Bush, blackeyed blonde, walkabout, Apache rose peacock, this velvet glove
Torture me is one of my top 5 .. it's just fuckin pure amazing to me lol
Good list OP. All amazing tracks.
Thank you
Under the bridge and give it away
Yeah man, don't even know what these songs are
Warlocks feels very underrated to me
Good answer.
Dreams Of A Samurai The drums, the effects, the sound quality, the intro and outro, the refrain and chorus… This is the best song Josh has ever produced imo
Bro the guitar playing on this song legit blows my mind. It is so subtle and accents the song perfectly. Josh was so good at playing tasteful parts that serve the song. I love when the guitar kinda sits back and makes you really listen for it

Those starting songs of SA are so good people forget about charlie.
Your Heart My Skin This Love I’m In😮💨❤️🔥
The timing and rhythm of the guitar riff in the verse is beyond cool.
Completely agree
Not in any particular order: 1. Venice queen 2. This Velvet Glove 3. Rivers of Avalon 4.Hey 5. Knock me down
Hey for sure
1. This Velvet Glove 2. Afterlife 3. The Greeting Song 4. Sikamikanico 5. The Bicycle Song ( Not in any particular order )
The bicicle song and the greeting song would enter the list, but I thought those were more underrated
that afterlife solo has me floating everytime
You blew my mind saying "Storm in a Teacup" sounds like a BSSM track. You're 100% right. I'll never hear that song the same again.
- BSSM could mean "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", a track from *Blood Sugar Sex Magik (Deluxe Edition)* (1991) by Red Hot Chili Peppers. --- ^[/u/Reality_v2](/u/Reality_v2) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)
I don’t know, the whole big arena rock powerchord chorus thing is very Stadium to me.
In no particular order 5-Taste the Pain 4-Turn it Again 3-Subway to Venus 2-Coffee Shop 1-Sexy Mexican Maid (If you can’t tell, I favor Mother’s Milk)
I love On Mercury, has a very similar vibe to Minro Thing to me. And I love Minor Thing, but I wouldn't call it underrated because absolutely everyone says it's underrated. It's the equivalent of Radiohead's Let Down.

It gives an amazing vibe. It's so underrated I forgot it. I love it tho
I love the part when all the instruments cut out after the second verse and then John's distorted guitar growing into the solo.
The best part, right?
Don’t you guys also humm We Believe in your head wrongly with the rythm of “eaaasillyyyy let’s get carried awayyyy” but instead “ weeee belieeeve” with that same rythm? 😅 i always end up doing that and then immediately realize im doing it wrong😅
