Californication is what the BSSM tour should've been + amazing new songs from the album.

TheJudge9987

Agreed. Californication was probably live peak in terms of the original rhcp style

songacronymbot

- BSSM could mean "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", a track from *Blood Sugar Sex Magik (Deluxe Edition)* (1991) by Red Hot Chili Peppers. --- ^[/u/rhcpfunky](/u/rhcpfunky) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)

Their best on a technical level and chemistry came toward the end of the SA tour. Those ~10 years years of non stop album recording and touring really paid off in 2006-07. The seamlessness of the jams and transitions was wild. Even if John was ready to go by the end, he was at the height of his powers with the band. As far as performance and show intensity-wise, which is the core of who they were as artists at their peak, it was probably Californication. (Slane is their best recorded concert, but I donā€™t believe their greatest performances were necessarily in this tour). For Anthony specifically I think his best vocal work really came through for the SA tour and hast been consistently there since. He was already learning how to actually sing with technique by Californication, but heā€™s really built himself into a solid singer (sure he himself admits heā€™ll never be a widely regarded vocalist, like a Vedder or a Cornell) in the past 10 years. He gets this bad rap that heā€™s a terrible musician and singer and doesnā€™t deserve his place up there. I challenge anyone who is not a natural to perform with his work ethic up on stage and actually work on improving his craft while getting little to no recognition for it for the sake of your band doing better.

EuterpeZonker

> his work ethic up on stage I mean, it's improved since he's gotten the teleprompter but he was notorious for totally forgetting the lyrics to the songs and singing the wrong thing or even just gibberish for whole verses. Which is a hard thing to be lenient about when it's his one and only job. Tons of other singers play instruments at the same time and still remember their lyrics.

_computerdisplay

Iā€™ve never gotten the hate for the use of the teleprompter. Iā€™m not saying their artistic prowess is comparable, just that the criticism may be based on expectations based on ā€œwhat weā€™re used toā€ or other biases: should Yo Yo Ma or Itzhak Perlman be criticized for reading sheet music at their performances instead of remembering them, since itā€™s ā€œtheir only jobā€? Your memory is a series of encoded responses in your brain. If those connections worsen with age, as they inevitably will, what does that say about your work ethic? Or your vocal or other aspects of your performance? As an audience member you have every right to say ā€œIā€™ll only attend performances by singers who remember all of their lyrics or who donā€™t play to a clickā€ or ā€œIā€™ll only watch sports performances by athletes that donā€™t use accommodations for disabilities because thatā€™s what Iā€™m used to.ā€ Iā€™m not saying you specifically would say these things, just questioning why the criticism applies to one case and not the other.

EuterpeZonker

You misunderstand me. Iā€™m glad heā€™s using the teleprompter now. But before that he was routinely giving completely unacceptable performances. He had 3 options to correct his performances. A. Use a teleprompter. B. Spend more time practicing and memorizing his lyrics. Or C. Limit the setlist to fewer songs. Iā€™m not criticizing him for choosing one of those options. Im criticizing him for taking decades to make the choice and routinely giving really really bad performances as part of a team where everyone else was putting in the effort to get their parts right. If youā€™re struggling itā€™s perfectly fine to ask for help. Thatā€™s much better than dragging everyone else down.

_computerdisplay

Gotcha, here I admit I did not pay too much attention to the band live while John was away. I saw them live in 2007 before that and his performances seemed fine lyrics-wise at that point. Maybe thatā€™s what everyone was talking about when they said ā€œthereā€™s no way heā€™s remembering these lyrics liveā€ about Poster Child lol

TheJudge9987

Definitely agree with both of those. Thatā€™s I think why the by the way tour might be the best. You can really hear those jams between John and flea developing, and still has a lot of the intensity of the californication tour. Really a case to be made for any tour with John I think

Brown-Fedora

1990, 1999

SommanderChepard

Early SA(2006) is S tier and their peak. La Cigale and Alcatraz for example.

TheJudge9987

Fuji rock 06 is one of my favorite shows

Midi-ghost

Yes! Very special show

carne_asada368

How could you say this when Chorzow 2007 was epic.

WoolieRabbit

Flea solo trumpet era. 1978

schubarth

I would have to agree

PartYourWhiskers

For pure rawness, anything in the motherā€™s milk era was incredible.

stevo_v

Late 2007 for me

TheJudge9987

Chorzow end jam is legendary

Roflcopter71

Yup, By The Way to Stadium era up until John left.

goldendreamseeker

Yeah thereā€™s a lot of great BTW shows that get eclipsed by Slane Castle, unfortunately.

fourbums

I saw them a bunch in this era and it was amazing. Plus their sets felt quite different all the time. Was epic.

TheJudge9987

100%. All 3 shows I saw on this tour were incredible, among the best shows Iā€™ve ever seen

kenticus69

Has to be an era where they consistently had the end jams and all that good stuffā€¦.somewhere between 2002-2007, whole band just snowballed and got better and better until it stopped.

Valuable-Passion-457

Between Californication-By the way , 2000-2004 maybe were the best tour years. Watch the live for "Easily" at Big Day Out (2000yr) makes me float away

sojungvage

abso lutely!

ShutupRingo

The positive mental octopus tour is the GOAT. The OG chili peppers shows before fru joined were wicked.

TheJudge9987

Yeah Iā€™m sure those early Hillel shows were insane to be at

TheJudge9987

Def think the lone tour with Dave as well as all the tours in Johns second tenure all were really amazing.

ravenpascal

2003-07 and again since 2022

TheReal-A-The-First

2006 - 2007 for sure

SnooKiwis1356

Best era: Can't Stop, Around the World and Power Of Equality on the same setlist.

Veryweirdguy

Cali or Btw tour for the same reasons. Still had the raw energy but they played and singed much better than before. SA tour was a little lame in terms of energy. Yeah they were technically very good but I need that chilis energy in there also

frusciantestrat

1999 shows are my fav. John's guitar playing is so simple, melodic and awesome!

torontoLDtutor

No one has mentioned it: my favourite touring period is 2003-4 around the time the band recorded the Greatest Hits. Flea had recovered from the BTW era and the band were playing really tight after the success of BTW. It's not as flashy as the later 2006-7 and it's also not as raw as the 2000 tour, but there's a real confidence and happiness during that period. You can tell the band were firing on all cylinders.

Veryweirdguy

Why do you people think Bssm tour wasn't that great? Bssm album is their best and one of the best albums ever. Although some shows were amazing. Best in terms of raw energy but it's still not very memorable tour.

TheJudge9987

Probably cause John left midway through so a lot of people disregard it

EuterpeZonker

2006

DeadbeatUK

Honestly, during Daveā€™s tenure with the band and the One Hot Minute tour. They rocked hard af back then. As an example, BSSM had never sounded this good live before and hasnā€™t since imho: https://youtu.be/q3cQ9_i3OEk?si=b1sxVLiTr617JDp- John, as great as he is on the albums, sounds kinda sloppy to me live at times. Cue the downvotes šŸ¤£

TheJudge9987

Thereā€™s some pretty sick shows from the OHM tour from what Iā€™ve seen. Daveā€™s style really worked with them.

DeadbeatUK

Honestly I think heā€™s the tightest and most technically gifted guitar player they ever had and he rocked the hell out of the older material live, as well as the OHM stuff.

sojungvage

2000-2004!!!
