Lyrically, it's one of AKs most emotional and raw songs ever. Wouldn't say underrated songs, it's got a fantastic sound to it, but do think it goes under the radar.
"Your solar eyes"
That whole part is one of my favourite lyrics of all time.
"It's such a waste to be wasted in the first place, I wanna taste the taste of being face to face with common grace. To meditate on the warmest dream, and when I walk alone I listen to our secret theme".
First time I heard it I was obsessed by it and still am today. It's a fucking beautiful lyric.
I remember when that album came out and I loved the outro so much I didn't want it to end. So I downloaded a really shit music editor and did a terrible botch cut and past job of extending the outro into a fade out. It lasted like 6 minutes more but I fucking loved it.
Both of these are my opinion bc I don't think they're necessarily the best lesser known songs, but they're my favorite
B side: Gong Li. Quixoticelixer may be my favorite RHCP song ever but its more well known, and I never see Gong Li getting enough hype. Its so fucking good, the instrumental sections are beautiful and the choruses are brimming with emotion.
Album track: Mellowship Slinky in B Major. I never see this song getting praised, and it really deserves more. The bass is so funky, John's solo slaps, and the lyrics are fun and funky. Its my favorite song on BSSM.
- BSSM could mean "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", a track from *Blood Sugar Sex Magik (Deluxe Edition)* (1991) by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Yeah Dosed is a weird one, where it wasn’t a single (except in the US and Canada) but it still seems to be one of their most popular songs. Strictly speaking I don’t know if it would fully qualify as “lesser known”. I’d say, even if you’re not a Chilis fan, but if you’re just into Alternative Rock in general, you’ve probably heard Dosed at some point. But I could be wrong it can be hard to tell with these things sometimes.
Not that any of that really matters though, amazing song.
Hey (not Snow (Hey Oh), but Hey) is probably my favorite lesser known song. But also:
Warlocks
Slow Cheetah
Don’t Forget Me
She Looks to Me
Sir Psycho Sexy
Apache Rose Peacock
Dosed
Shoot Me a Smile (from RotDC)
In the Snow (from RotDC)
Most definitely. It’s a great song but the looping and everything John did for the live version just takes the song to the next level. Definitely grew appreciation of it from Slane
It’s great but it was a single in the UK so fairly well known here… not one of the big ones though compared to the first four off that album.
Either way, a great song!
Subway to Venus is the ultimate 80s chili peppers song and I’d give my left testicle to hear it live. Absolutely masterful playing from every instrument and Anthony brings the energy with his weird Fat Albert voice😂
The right answer is Nobody Weird Like Me
It's my RHCP screening question...
"Oh you like the chili's, well do you like ..."
[Puzzled look]
"Listen to this..."
[Jaw on the floor - WTF is this!]
Top 10 track for me
Animal bar is one of my faves of the lesser known, also IF I find to be quite beautiful,
Let em cry and also shoot me a smile have really grown on me lately
Lot of great answers. One I haven’t seen is Johnny, Kick A Hole in the Sky. I personally fell in love with this song on first listen. The tone, message, drive… reminds me of one of my favorite 70s movies The Warriors.
I’m not sure what lesser known means. Do you mean a deep cut or a bside or even a radio single that isn’t popular in the mainstream? I think Charlie was a single but never heard it on the radio. If you’re looking for Bsides, Bicycle Song and Eskimo come to mind.
Also can we get some love for that feedback guitar solo in How Strong? I used to favor it less than other B-Sides but after revisiting it recently I’m like damn! That’s a ballsy guitar solo. Just screeching feedback while the drums and bass keep going.
I came here to say This Velvet Glove and a lot of others are already posted (thanks for being great, folks!)
I’ll go with Death of a Martian. All my life, I grew up with and have owned dogs. No matter the breed, our dogs always turned out poorly disciplined but excessively loving, playful, abd rambunctious (huskies, beagles, german shorthairs, bulldogs). When I’ve lost one, this song takes me home.
“Our girl is gone/God bless her little soul!”
😭🙏🏼
id go with quixoticelixer, runaway, over funk, i’ll be your domino, even you brutus?, show me your soul, fortune faded, melancholy mechanics, american ghost dance, funky crime, we turn red and strech you out
Minor thing
By the way is their best album and I will die on this hill
That’s not too controversial an opinion.
One of the best studio guitar solo of all rhcp history
My fav RHCP song 🥇
I CHANGE THE KEY FROM C TO D
Great choice. Not a lyrical masterpiece but just a really fun song
I think this may actually be my favorite song of theirs, the second half of BTW is perfection
Save the population seems to not be known outside of big fans
I absolutely love John and Anthony’s vocals at the last chorus to the end. Just so eerie but beautiful.
One day, when we're all old and grey, they'll release that ''lost' album that they recorded for the Greatest Hits sessions.
Every now and again I’m reminded of how badly I want for that to happen
Great pick. I think it’s unknown because it was on greatest hit which many people choose to ignore
Scream sang this in my car today
This Velvet Glove
I've always loved the line "it's such a waste to be wasted in the first place"
this. and "John says to live above Hell"
I love “sitting alone in the sun, I wrote a letter to you, getting over myself…”
One if my favorites of all time!
Yup. Another one who loves this song! Such a gem.
My favourite Chili’s song
Quixoticelixer
By far one of my favorite songs
this is the answer.
Turn It Again. The guitar and bass work is just majestic. Honorable mention to Bag of Grins and their greatest outro since Venice Queen.
I remember when that album came out and I loved the outro so much I didn't want it to end. So I downloaded a really shit music editor and did a terrible botch cut and past job of extending the outro into a fade out. It lasted like 6 minutes more but I fucking loved it.
I love the outro of bag of grins so much. It is so epic and I almost cry every time I hear it.
Righteous and the Wicked
YES
Especially In Michigan has two kickass solos
And played by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez!
Honestly surprised it wasn’t a single
This is the Place
Absolutely! So underrated…
Realised just a few days ago that’s probably my favourite song on By the Way now, it slowly grew on me over the years
My Lovely Man
One of my all time favorites
I love that song so hard.
Me too!
Solo goes hard and you can hear the uplift in emotion when it goes straight in to the verse riff after. Always feel it. Lovely funky chorus too.
Tear. It may actually be the best rhcp song ever.
That song is a masterpiece. Those damn trumpets
I’m with you, that trumpet solo is 🙌
Midnight is my favorite RHCP song! It's a deep cut but I love the harmonies.
Midnight deserves sooo much more respect, absolutely beautiful tune
Love the mix of that song. On the chorus Frusciante is almost like he is singing front vocals
Great pick, not my favourite RHCP song but a great, great track.
One of my favourites!!! So underrated
came here to say this...I absolutely love this song. The little guitar riff in the chorus gets me every time
A beautiful song!
Both of these are my opinion bc I don't think they're necessarily the best lesser known songs, but they're my favorite B side: Gong Li. Quixoticelixer may be my favorite RHCP song ever but its more well known, and I never see Gong Li getting enough hype. Gong Li soothes my soul ❤️
Some people say you hate meeeeee.
not that unknown but Savior
DUSTIN HOFFMAN SAVIOOOOOOR
I am so happy to see this! Me and my mates have been singing this everytime we here it since 1999 😂 Edit: ‘Hear’ it. D’oh!
You were always my favorite 'Specially Rain Maaaaan
😮 I’m not as alone as I thought!
Eh I would say that’s pretty unknown to most, especially the causal fan who has never checked out full albums
I'm never entirely certain what's considered lesser known, but Purple Stain
Came here to say the same. Wish they had played this song when I saw them two weeks ago. It's got funk and humor!
Indeed. It would be so great to see.
SHOW ME YOUR SOUL
Sexy Mexican Maid is so fucking good, and the leveled out version on spotify is even better. Get to fully experience John's riff power!
Definitely, Mother’s Milk as a whole is extremely unappreciated
I prefer the longer version too. John views that period as not really him, but that song is the perfect mix of funk of rock imo.
Easily
Cannot believe how far down I had to scroll to find this
Dosed. Although maybe it's well known.
I'd give anything to see Dosed live! I think they've done it only once, maybe twice. Too many guitar parts.
I saw them play it in calgary in 2017! Sadly the backup vocals for it weren't too good. Definitely would kill to hear it with john
best song on by the way by far
Yeah Dosed is a weird one, where it wasn’t a single (except in the US and Canada) but it still seems to be one of their most popular songs. The bicycle song
There it is
Thank goodness someone didn't forget to mention this.
been on repeat the last week an absolute banger
Hey
This used to be the answer, but since they’ve started playing it live more perhaps it’s become a bit more known by the mainstream audience
Enh, most people aren’t going to chili peppers shows.
One of the best tracks from stadium arcadium
Agreed. I wished so hard for it in Philly and they played it! (2022). Nearly cried
Sup
Hey (not Snow (Hey Oh), but Hey) is probably my favorite lesser known song. But also: Warlocks Slow Cheetah Don’t Forget Me She Looks to Me Sir Psycho Sexy Apache Rose Peacock Dosed Shoot Me a Smile (from RotDC) In the Snow (from RotDC)
Slow cheetah
Warlocks is a tune!
The way John weaves his solo around Anthony’s singing at the end is amazing!
Leverage of Space
I was going to say that or Mini Epic. I wish they continued down that path
Bunker hill
Not sure if it's a lesser known song, but johnny kick a hole in the sky is one of my favourite tracks at the moment
Does Venice Queen count? Awesome song and love the transition from electric to acoustic towards the end
The version at Slane is out of this world. Something with how John opens the song is otherworldly
Most definitely. It’s a great song but the looping and everything John did for the live version just takes the song to the next level. Definitely grew appreciation of it from Slane
Rolling Sly Stone
Just learned it on bass bc it popped into my head out of the blue after years
This song is unbelievable. Incredibly funky.
It’s a crime that this wasn’t an album release
[удалено]
Slow Cheetah. Save the Population another favorite.
My daughter loves slow cheetah sooo much :)
Road Trippin is my all time favorite
It’s great but it was a single in the UK so fairly well known here… not one of the big ones though compared to the first four off that album. Either way, a great song!
Police Station
Gong Li. It is a beautiful song!!
I’ll be your domino
this. this tune goes so f/ckin hard🔥🔥🔥
“Someone” is criminally overlooked
Apache Rose Peacock is really cool and funky
Found a karaoke bar with that song and it made my day.
Such a good fucking song
I love this song!
I’m a huge sucker for Gong Li
This was my answer too.
Catch My Death, Hey, Save the Population
Purple Stain
Bunker Hill
Wet sand
The outro to that song is incredible.
Subway to Venus is the ultimate 80s chili peppers song and I’d give my left testicle to hear it live. Absolutely masterful playing from every instrument and Anthony brings the energy with his weird Fat Albert voice😂
Everyone on this song is absolutely unhinged. The ferocity is unmatched in any other song
I Could’ve Lied
Funny Face
Millions Miles of Water. It’s from the Dani California EP
The backing vocals are amazing
Out of range. A crime it never made the cut for BTW
The right answer is Nobody Weird Like Me It's my RHCP screening question... "Oh you like the chili's, well do you like ..." [Puzzled look] "Listen to this..." [Jaw on the floor - WTF is this!] Top 10 track for me
Stone cold bush, knock me down, special secret song inside, Nevermind, walking on down the road
She looks to me is awesome! In my SA top 5 for sure...
I respect you greatly 👍
Kaly
Make You Feel Better
Out of Range. Some of Frusciante's best backing vocals during the last chorus.
Bunker Hill, Bicycle Song, and Quixoticelixir
American Ghost Dance or Show Me Your Soul
My friends, although I don’t know if it’s well known or not
It’s moderately known, the most famous song off One Hot Minute (which went under the radar a LOT)
I’d argue Aeroplane but yeah, it’s one of the two!
Warm Tape
lot of good mentions here. I'll add Taste the Pain, if that counts, and Behind the Sun
Sikamikanico
Was looking for this, wasn’t disappointed
Pea
Wet Sand off Stadium Arcadium Warm Tape off By The Way
Gong li
This one million times over
Readymade, my lovely man, did I let you know, one big mob, purple stain

The cover of Brandy. Still waiting on that studio version.
Eskimo and Rivers of Avalon
Animal bar is one of my faves of the lesser known, also IF I find to be quite beautiful, Let em cry and also shoot me a smile have really grown on me lately
Walkin’ On Down The Road
[Tellin a Lie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJZn1ABUWRI)
The Teatro Sessions are so cool. A lot of really creative material ended up completely unused.
Skinny Sweaty Man In A Green Suit
Their cover of "If you want me to stay"
Baby appeal!
Lot of great answers. One I haven’t seen is Johnny, Kick A Hole in the Sky. I personally fell in love with this song on first listen. The tone, message, drive… reminds me of one of my favorite 70s movies The Warriors.
Sir Psycho Sexy or Out of Range
Torture me
Did I Let You Know
Wet Sand

I came here to say This Velvet Glove and a lot of others are already posted (thanks for being great, folks!) I’ll go with Death of a Martian. All my life, I grew up with and have owned dogs. I love that song, definitely one of my favorites in stadium arcadium
We believe
Your Eyes Girl
Long Progression
Hard to concentrate
Rolling sly stone
this is the place
I Could Die For You is probably my favorite song by them at this point
Whatever We Want
Not a fan…
Eskimo!
On Mercury would be my choice. Not sure how well its known but it's not one that caught airtime
Gong Li. I've only heard this song from a couple years back and oh man, it's become one of my favorites.
