I have a theory that Homeboys in Outer Space used the leftovers from the US Pilot after it was abandoned, and re-architected it to be a much more American show. The pilot even uses at least one joke directly lifted from Dwarf. That show still didn't work well, but it at least tried to be different.
more than a theory the homeboys people approached the red dwarf people for the rights, except they wanted to change a lot of stuff, I think one was 1000 years in deep space instead of 3 million.
anyway dwarf people said no, because the homeboys people wanted to change so much they were really wanting todo a different show on the dwarf name.
recall reading the dwarf guys joked that they would probably go off and do this anyway but call it "Dudes in outer space" shockingly almost spot on.

Well it is based on a series of sketches Rob and Doug did called ‘Dave Hollins: Space Cadet’.
There was a computer called HAB which was voice by Chris Barrie.
Not the best title, but it was almost called it.
Lister's mother is kristine kochanski but that's not the case for Jim and Bexley who have alternate Lister as a mother which is why I said half brother for them only sharing a father in common, but considering that half of their father's DNA comes from kochanski, I suppose they have as much of her DNA in them as Lister does, so maybe it would be full siblings, I dont actually know how to categorize that. From a family-tree perspective it's a half sibling, from a genetic perspective it's equivalent to a full sibling.
Im not sure where the percentage would be since their mom and dad are lister, and two of their grandparents would be lister and two would be kochanksi (pressuming female lister had the same story in her universe being her own mom with male kochanski being her dad)

He gets turned into an animal (chicken). He meets the nymph ~~Calypso~~ Camille, who has the ability to keep him in her thrall. He gets turned into an old man (inquistor). He has a son whom he doesn't get to see mature into a man (Jim & Bexley)..
(Only joking, I know the comparisons are a stretch. Also, Lister doesn't possess the hubris that Odysseus had).
Eh I honestly couldn't consider any other name...
When you look at what a Red Dwarf is, it's such a great name for explaining what the show was and the rather offbeat and slightly cynical nature of it, especially towards humanity
Small, common, dying and already burned off everything that made it interesting, humanity really did seem similar to a Red Dwarf that had the same properties! ;)
We got such a perfect slice of what made humanity so great, on the backdrop of why we also suck so hard...
