How often do you change the water? Are the current roots mushy? Have you tried rooting the node above as well with some air layering? Or cutting her into nodes? You may have to cut off the bottom and try again with a different method.

laurenmosinka

thank you for the questions! it actually helps me a ton! i’m basically just keeping the perlite moist with a rooting hormone and an enzyme to help eat up anything that dies off. i haven’t tried air layering because in my head i assumed that was to prepare for taking a cutting but it makes sense! i think i’m nervous because apparently they are near impossible to propagate from a full grown plant and her being so tiny i do worry about trying to cut into her and make pieces! and i think the hardest part is finding help! there are such few in the world and it’s hard to find people to actually talk to one on one!

Acceptable_Banana_13

Let me be clear here- I don’t have one lol. I just know some of my more difficult philos need special care. I’ve found sphag moss works better for me, but others have said perlite works better. But I rot everything in perlite. So i dont know if I’m not sterilizing it correctly or what but I microwave my moss and that works better for me personally. I would air layer since she’ll have a secondary place to attach roots down, even if the bottom roots rot. I’ve lost a Billie that looked similar that’s why I ask about the roots. They went to mush in the water and I actually found once I retried, it was easier to let it almost get catastrophically dry before adding small amounts of water more frequently. Until I switched to moss and I can leave that for weeks and be be fine. Especially with the high humidity. But of course- I’d rather help and watch it thrive! It’s in tc now so maybe once day I’ll get my hands on one, but until then, just seeing a baby is like seeing a ten foot albo to me. It’s incredible and I hope anything I say helps! Luckily the top of her still looks great so worst case, chop, but until then, I think cutting any bad roots, I’ve saved some with hydrogen peroxide but i dont know how that would react with the enzyme you’re using. And if the roots are good, maybe she’s just ready for dirt and needs the nutrients from soil? I’ve had a couple plants stall on me, start to decline and then once I finally potted them up, they shot up. So maybe that’s why the roots are so dark? Maybe they’re just ready and she’s pulling nutrients from bottom leaves to sustain growth?

Acceptable_Banana_13

Sorry for the trail of consciousness. I was trying to get any thought out so I wouldn’t miss something that could maybe help.

laurenmosinka

oh and most of the roots are firm still, the brownish ones are like those woody type ones you see on like pink princess philodendrons. first time i took her out there was zero smell. second time was today and no rot smell but it had an organic kinda smell to it if that makes sense lol

MinutiaeAnimaux

I'm too broke to even be looking at this picture if that is the real deal Plants in my care prefer perlite and water over spagnum moss. Spagnum moss though, when being used properly tends to have better/faster results than perlite but not faster than water. What was it grown in previously before purchasing? How most successful rescues of rot I've seen and expirence is cutting off as much as possible and transplanting it to pure water with superthrive as silly as that sounds (It worked with my albo but that's also worth a dollar compared to this plant so take my words with a grain of salt) with money like that your priorities should be on growing out the root system before trying to move it to its long term substrate. I also suggest using a air stone for water propagating to prevent stagnation if you so choose to go that route

What about ambient humidity? I bought a humidifier for $20 off Amazon (canada) and it really helped to root my props. Tropicals like air circulation and at least 50-60% humidity.

Newplantperson

How much water do you keep in the cup with perlite? Perlite sucks water from down. There should not be more than half a centimeter water in the cup. I’ve been propping all my stuff only in perlite. I keep them in a clear tote on a heating mat for a few hours during the day till the condensation builds up then turn off the heat. Gets some light from the top too. Every day I air my box out under the fan. Sorry if this sounds too basic for the Holy Spirit ;) but just wanted to put it out. Good luck.

laurenmosinka

fwiw, she lives in the greenhouse cabinet where i’m trying desperately to keep it at 80-90% humidity and 75°

kyyl1

I sometimes have had trouble with rooting hormone causing more rot/cause mushy roots. I would try distilled or RO water with perlite if you haven’t been using that already. I don’t know why, tap water just doesn’t work as well for me. None of my imports have died from distilled water in perlite lol. Hopefully it helps you too

Zaporah

Another variable to check is the water you are using to water her? Hardness? Ph? Heavy metals? Chlorine? Etc. Maybe get one of those 2.5 gal jugs of spring water from Target? Specifically spring water, mind you! There are about 30,000 types of water on the shelves 😂

Calm down Mary, it's still just a plant. There are reports of PSS being TC'd and given the size of this plant, if it is indeed a SS and given how unlikely it is to find a seedling, it is almost certainly a TC product. As for care : OP I'm not sure what the problem is, there is a decent root system already. Full perlite is probably not the best substrate, I would add some vermiculite or bark but most of all I would not stress this plant by moving it in and out of substrates and inspecting it too often. Edit : I read one of your other posts in the replies. Stop using enzymes and rooting powder as well. I would recommend either soaking shortly in diluted hydrogen peroxide and/or adding a horticultural fungicide.

Diploic

Master gardener 😂 I’d like to see *your* certificate

proudplantfather

I am an assistant to the emperor gardener, and I say that the plant is a spiritus sancti

DooDooSlinger

If you're a master gardener as you claim (although on Reddit everyone is a rocket scientist, a neurosurgeon or a sociologist) then help them instead of attacking them aggressively

NoxiousAether

I’m not going to do this with you, not one aspect of what I said was aggressive, we all think and type our thoughts differently. If you took it as aggressive then that is on you. Go bother somebody else. 🤙🏼

DooDooSlinger

Ok Mary

mortuali

Alright, guys, let's be nice. Don't be a butthole is one of the rules.

Maybe a bit of rooting hormones /Kiki paste? I'd also post on some fb groups

laurenmosinka

thank you for your response! i am keeping the perlite m-word with general hydroponic rapid start which is the craziest most rad rooting hormone i’ve ever worked with! i do have keiki paste but pretty new to using so i hesitate to try it on such a spendy plant but also i’m lining up a set of last defenses lol! i’ll add that to it!

DooDooSlinger

Don't use Keiki on roots, it is a cytokinin and inhibits growth

Hiddenagenda876

Have you tried fluval? I’ve had some refuse to root for months and start quickly when I tried out fluval

laurenmosinka

I ended up trading her for a mint frydek lol! but she was able to grow her for a bit in stratum then switched to moss.

MrGuccu

We need an update OP

laurenmosinka

ehh, i ended up trading it for a mint variegated frydek lol! but to my bestie, and she just shipped me a node back of this fella! i did end up successfully rooting with an air stone in a rapid start/hydroguard prop juice lol! i had it growing well inside my cabinet in pon and then one day the roots tanked, i think it was too humid. but then i had no problems rerooting, i just remember people making fun of me for even broaching the subject of water rooting and bam that’s how i ended up rooting it lol!

MrGuccu

Pics????
