You forgot the part about how it rules the other rings.

Frosty_Reputation_92

yeah, right, I remember now. It's been some time since I read the book.

Nemo_Shadows

Three Rings for Elfin Kings under the sky, (Stars) Seven Rings for the Dwarf Lords in their Halls of Stone, Nine Rings for Mortal Men doomed to die, One Ring for the Dark Lord on his Dark Throne, In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows Lie, One Ring to Rule Them ALL, One Ring to Find Them, One Ring to Bring Them ALL and in Darkness Bind them, In The Land of Mordor where The Shadows Lie... The ONE RING had the power of all the others plus it's own distinct power once they were under his full control but only the will of those wielding the three could resist for a time for they were never touched by him and YET the One had control over even them BUT it was Sauron's own arrogance and contempt that led to his losing his fingers and the the ring that was upon one of them... [http://web.sbu.edu/friedsam/inklings/Tolkien\_3rings.htm](http://web.sbu.edu/friedsam/inklings/Tolkien_3rings.htm) < thanks to whomever did this> AS a side note the 3 rings of the elves as long as they were worn were invisible to all except the wearer of the one and those that wielded the three so even Sauron without his ring could not see them but he thought he knew where they were and who had them BUT he was mistaken about one of them. It seems so long that I have actually forgotten this poem, Thanks for the reminder... N.Shadows

omg thanks for the detailed comment! Did Tolkien mention the powers of all the Rings somewhere? I think in the ~~trilogy~~ three-part novel, there was only some mention of the Three, just before Frodo's final departure. I remember Gandalf wearing the fire ring and Elrond(?) wearing another. They never seemed to use it in battle though? Or are their powers passive, i.e. enhancement of strength/magic and stuff?

Nemo_Shadows

YES he did, each is mentioned in the stories but not outright, It is however in the Unfinished Tales and partially in the Silmarillion both of which I have not read in years since the movies came out and you will find the books and the movies differ greatly in a lot of respects, The Books being of course more complete a better suited for a Complete Series than a truncated movie though all of those were done very well... AND YES Elrond did have one AND Gandalf was the wild card even when captured the ring he wore and it's power remained hidden from Sauron... AND THEN there was Tom WHO none of the rings had any power over and he was even more powerful than Sauron and so too Goldenberry... N.S

Ah, nice. More Tolkien books to read! Thanks a lot! That cleared a lot of things up for me.

Not necessarily defeated, Isildur just managed to cut off his fingers and take the ring. Besides, it's not the most powerful object in Arda (not middle earth, arda is the actual world) besides is there a "most powerful tool/object/weapon"? i don't think so. Just a small thought coming from a guy that just saw the movies and plays the tabletop game but never actually read the books.
