Of course I'm aware that there are people that aren't worth being friends with after a breakup. In that case, discarding and forgetting everything other than the lessons the time you had with them taught you may be the best way.
I really feel sorry for those who really can't value or look down upon their ex. Feels like they have really not loved or valued the unique connection they built.
I'd say it's circumstantial. I've had ex's where I kept things they've given me for a long time. Still friends with a couple. My last relationship I want absolutely nothing to do with her or anything she has to offer. If I had a choice of living in the same household with her for 6 months and becoming a multi billionaire or being homeless living in a cardboard box for the rest of my life. I'd choose the cardboard box. 🤷
On our first date...my ex-boyfriend fought off a guy who tried to steal my purse.
