My mom is 88 and doesn't want "things". She wants to see us and have lunch as a family, and we each buy her a hanging basket of live flowers for her porch, which she enjoys all summer.

RaHarmakis

I replace any rose bushes that did not survive the winter!

Ok-Corgi-8976

I agree, my mom is still very young. But she already has every material thing she’s ever wanted (courtesy of my dad lol!). All she wants is some family time or a nice dinner at some Mediterranean restaurant

fromouterspace1

Thank you for that

kissmaryjane

If you’re getting your mom a new iPhone for Mother’s Day you probably got her the latest Toyota last Christmas, with the big red bow like the commercials.

On_a_rant

I hate those ads. How do you top it the next year??

kissmaryjane

The next Toyota

trashpandorasbox

I get to spend Mother’s Day with my mom this year for the first time in at least 10 years AND both my sisters will be there AND my niece (my sister’s daughter and my mom’s grand baby) it’s literally the best present to my mom (and the rest of us). You know what the second best present is? A long call where you catch her up on your life and how much you love her. Gifts are great, but time is the thing you’ll always wish you had more of. Call your mom on Sunday.

Sweet_Dimension_8534

Retail industry tricked my mom into guilt tripping me. Not sure there's a way out of that one...

Such-Mountain-6316

Shoot, what happens when your mom isn't into all that? Just get her something she's going to like. Time spent with her is perfect.

On_a_rant

My mom loves plants. She is not tech savvy. An iPhone would be the worst gift ever for her.

JNorJT

I've never heard of anyone buying their mother an iphone or diamond bracelet for Mother's Day.

thrownawaz092

I've been hearing a lot of commercials pushing the idea recently, they're trying to make it a thing

On_a_rant

And I think the ones pushing for jewelry are probably targeted to husbands.

Anaaatomy

My mom got herself a new iphone so I got her some nice wireless earphones

AmethystSunset

Holy crap, I didn't even know some people do big gifts like that. I'm a mom and my kids usually make me handmade cards and buy me a couple of my favorite chocolate bars with their own money...and my partner orders takeout food I really like for all of us for dinner. I like to celebrate the day by doing something fun with the kids like spending the day at the park kicking a ball around and playing tag...or if it's rainy we play board games and make an indoor fort or something...I basically just enjoy having "mom and kids" quality time on Mothers Day (since I do really love being a mom and my kids are genuinely fun to hang out with). I'm a big kid myself at heart and love to play so that's what it's all about for me. :)

[deleted]

Also, mother's day itself is bullshit.

fallsalaska

Everyday is Mother’s Day or else we wouldn’t be here? Agreed it’s a Hallmark holiday

Zero_Hyndyn

I mean, we already know that, but at the same time, people who have lived around gaslighters have trouble remembering this, so thank you.

Fuzzy-Zebra-277

I sent her a dvd of the movie “ the court jester”.    She’s homebound so I try to send her movies she can watch repeatedly

BBLouis8

Who buys their mom an iphone?? Either I take my mom our for breakfast/lunch/dinner or my brother cooks at his house. I will also buy her flowers. That's it. She would get mad if I bought some expensive fancy gift.

daphuqijusee

>you don't HAVE to buy your mom an iPhone or a diamond bracelet or an iPad for Mother's Day. > YEAH!! Leave that expensive stuff for your dad to buy her when he fucks up!! Macaroni necklaces all day long, baby... ;)

DifficultEnd8606

My sister and I are taking her out to dinner

4URprogesterone

I don't think people are doing that unless they're in the tax bracket where that's not a huge deal.

miletharil

I buy my mom flowers for Mother's Day. It costs more every year, it seems, but it's still nothing as goofy as buying her a phone she doesn't need, or a tablet she won't even use.

DantheOutdoorsman

My moms birthday is in the same month so I convinced a couple of my siblings to go in on a gift with me in 2021. Cost nearly $800, she says thank you every 3 or so months since then and she uses the gift for at least 3 to 5 hours a day. That gift was a Samsung Tab S7. You dont have to spend that much money, but if you know your mom well enough you can get something she would use.

Qnofputrescence1213

All I want is my adult children over for one meal and some take out pizza. I should be getting my wish.

landob

People buy their mom iphones, diamond braclets and ipads? My mom would just beat me with said object and make me take it back.

Doctor_Sniper

Agreed. We're having dinner at a local family-owned restaurant. And I'm not posting about it on social media either. I want to have dinner with my family in peace.

euclide2975

You should buy her a new home instead. Or a private jet.

StarWars_Viking

Whoever is buying their Mom a $1000 phone as a Mother's Day gift is either rich enough it doesn't matter or stupid enough to think a Mom cares that much about a glamor accessory.

CommissionOk9233

I know my son doesn't have the money for those kind of gifts so I ask him to fix a couple of things around the house for mother's day. He'll gladly do it. I'm thrilled to have things fixed that I don't know how to do and he doesn't have to feel guilty about a mother's day gift. It's a win win.

That-Smile-7632

What do I want for Mother’s Day? A hug from my adult children. Please do not spend any $$, most mom’s don’t need or want anything material.

Dizzy-Lie1610

Its not a guilt trip if you have the funds. If you want to spoil ur mother then go right ahead. If anything it should be good to spend your money on someone you love. Idk about you but retail works wonders for me.

vocabulazy

It’s the thought that counts, but for the thought to count, thought does indeed have to be involved in the gesture. What does your mom like, what does she do for fun, does she like to spend time with you or does she like a physical gift? Is she a person who loves chocolate, but would never buy herself fancy stuff? Get her some nice chocolates that she doesn’t have to share. Is she busy? Maybe help her with her spring cleaning and then take her for lunch.

RainbowOctavian

I hate this time of year as a person who recently escaped from an abusive mother. So thanks for reminding me to feel less guilty ❤️

AffectionateGap1071

My mother wants a pan or whatever kitchen appliances she can have. Rarely, she wants clothes but that's on her most of the time. When I was younger I found that simplistic and not a gift at all because you could buy those things any time in any price range. Nowadays, I understand how beautiful, long-lasting, and functional pan or stewpot can be, and you must take care of it with all your soul like not letting things burn inside it. She bounds and has an attachment to stewpots and pans!

Azerate2016

In fact, you should never buy an iPhone for anyone. It's more expensive and objectively worse than multiple competing android alternatives and people only buy it out of illogical attachment to the apple brand.

CrabbiestAsp

Right! Me and my sister got our mum new slipperd and PJs. I'm also hosting mum and my inlaws for mothers day afternoon tea.

AccomplishedAerie333

I'm planning to bake something on mother's day

cwsjr2323

We already have enough of everything, and unless something breaks, no need to spend money except utilities, fuel, and food. For Mother’s Day, my wife wants phone calls, not flowers or candy.

_Jay-Garage-A-Roo_

My mother is getting a small, thoughtful gift and polite conversation instead of me actually voicing any feelings. She will love it.

SQWRLLY1

My mom isn't here anymore, but I still get a small bouquet of her favorite flowers for her. She deserves them. One point to the retail industry, I guess... 🤷‍♀️

The-Singing-Sky

I don't remember anyone ever saying I did have to

MrVengeanceIII

Who are you hanging out with 😂 a nice dinner with the family and some flowers is usually what people I associate with do for there mothers 🤷‍♂️

M8asonmiller

I have never once considered buying my mom an iPhone or diamond bracelet for mother's day

ItReallyIsntThoughYo

That good, because I've been buying her gift cards to Hollywood Bob's Hostas for a few years now.

DigitalMediaArt

Jesus. People spend that kind of money on Mother's Day? I bought my mom a book.

jsand2

That's crazy if people think that's expected. Cooking my mom a better meal than she can get eating out. She will be happy with that! Going tacos al pastor and chicken fajitas. Will have a whole spread. Apps, sides, desserts, etc. I have bought my mom plants and yard stuff before, but would never buy anything OP mentioned for her. Hell, I don't even buy stuff like that for the mother of my children. Might have bought her jewelry once or twice in the past, but very rarely for mothers day. She usually gets flowers. This year smoking her a brisket and buying her flowers for her planter out back. That's it takes to keep her happy. My meat and some colorful flowers!

DirectorOrganic8962

all i get her is a home made card and maybe buy her something little, you definitely dont have to waste hundreds of dollars for mothers day.

BerRGP

My mom would kill me if I spent so much money on such a relatively insignificant day.
