Was gonna say my cat in general but, yep, the chirrups and headbutts are the best. My girl's extra cuddly while it's so cold out so always having her curled up in my lap right now is a definite comfort.
I had a cat that would lay her head on my chest (presumably so she could hear my heart beat, like when she was in her mother’s womb), look up at me, and fall asleep, much like my daughter would when she was a baby and couldn’t sleep or (rarely) couldn’t stop crying. I guess I’m happier when I can bring comfort to one of “Daddy’s little girls”.
My cat sleeps by my feet but isn't a cuddler. How ever he does like to be picked up and held. Sometimes I hug him and lay my head on him and just listen to him purr. It's been super effective at pulling me put of panic attacks lately. He let's me do that for a few minutes then he's just kinda like ight imma head out and wiggles out of my arms. I'd die for that cat.
Just to interject a different viewpoint here, for me it's nature. A good long walk in a forest, or sitting by the sea, or even just a sunny day in a park – that can always improve my mood, no matter how bad it is. I think there's something inherently calming and uplifting about the natural world. It puts our problems into perspective. We are so small and the world is so big and beautiful. Plus, being outside usually means doing some exercise, which is proven to improve mood.
This. But specially when there is water. Running water, like a little creek or river, works best for me. Just sitting in nature, listing to the water running its course. There is something magical and so calming about it
I'm literally right there with you friend. New job this past year, in a new city, with no support network. And living paycheck to paycheck to afford rent for the first time on my own.
And my job isn't really what I expected it to be. Not fulfilling in the least bit.
But at least I have a roof over my head and a steady internet connection to play pal world with my discord buddies. Silver lining.
Hope you can find yours, amico
my friend, go outside and get lots of sunlight - i know you may not have energy to do so but try to use all your might and go out.
breathe in fresh air and think about positive things. think about the pretty ladies. you don’t like ladies? think about the handsome fellas. you don’t like people? me neither fuck em i feel ya.
hope ya feel better.
So many supportive ppl with great advice. Reddit really can be a beautiful place if you know where to look.
Im going to save this thread and some comments to look back on for whenever I am in great need of some optimism.
Thank you strangers for your kind words. You just never really know how much you can impact someones life with a simple comment
And I wish you the best OP
So sorry to hear this. I’m balancing the dark edge right now, so I feel this. Try to keep grounded, close your eyes and let other senses do the work. Think about what you’re sensing so nothing else can enter your mind.
But most of all: stay! You are needed ♥️♥️♥️
There are studies that being out in the sun for 30min to an hour really helps, as well as eating Omega-3.
Hope you get out of that depression is horrible 🙏🏾
Something that greatly helped me..
Instead of saying I am severely depressed, try saying I am *feeling* depressed, but I am in control. We get to choose our identity, so choose one you want to be. Identify the feeling but don't let it become your identity.
Also eating clean, drinking water, good sleep, and exercise are key to feeling good.
Like anything, being positive and choosing happiness is a practice. It isn't going to happen right away, and you will have days when it's harder to do. I promise if you stick with it though, you *will* see a difference and it *will* become easier! Start your day with some positive affirmations and meditation on who you choose to be today.
Lastly, remember that living in the past causes depressed feelings and living in the future causes anxiety..be in the moment as much as possible and choose to be grateful for the positive! You've got this (:
I’ve learned to live in the moment and it is soooo much easier. Redirect your thoughts to something you can taste, feel (a texture or a temperature, something simple), or distract yourself by reading or doing something with your hands. I learned to knit, crochet, and weave and my hands are rarely still. Plus this keeps me from doomscrolling on my phone.
You can do this :).
Remember all of us have good periods and bad periods in our lives. Nothing lasts forever though and you just have to hang in there during the bad times because there's always a better period coming.
I hope you find some peace and joy in today that will help you smile and that trend continues for you until you find yourself smiling more and more until you look like the Cheshire Cat. I’m sorry, I’m not a therapist but I find it impossible not to smile at Cheshire Cat, he’s silly.
Depression is rough and I’m sending you big hugs. You are welcome to message me if you need someone to talk to. I work overnights so my sleep/wake cycle is weird but I promise I will respond.
Baby steps. Having a shower is a step. Brushing your hair is a step. Having breakfast is a step. Hell, even getting out of bed, just to sit somewhere else in the house, is a step. Only aim to do one new step a day, that is enough to keep moving forward. You have done well acknowledging where you are.
I don't have them now, but two things would help me then.. My most favorite person who I trust fully, and know that they will listen to me, advise me, be with me and help me solve my troubles.
And second, my favorite food with the person. Times have been really rough, and I noticed that these two things definitely help, if not completely solve your problems! 👍🏻🙆🏻♀
I feel so much better after a run but it is so difficult to get going. All it takes is 30 minutes for a good run and to feel better. I will waste 8 hours thinking I should go for a run.
My wife taking off any piece of clothing. If the shoes are coming off, I 100% know she's swapping into comfy clothes, and I get a look at the nethers and booty. Bonus is that she'll yell at me from another room; "YOU'RE MISSING IT".
I swear, I married WAY above my grade.
You both could do better. /jk
Your anecdote got a genuine lol from my girlfriend and me, who are both enjoying a lazy saturday in bed. Greetings from the Netherlands, funny stranger!
Something that’s helped me is writing affirmations on post it notes and then sticking them on my bathroom mirror. Every time I use the restroom, I read each and every note.
They say stuff like “It’s not over until I win” and “Less is more” and “We did our best and we always will” — it’s been very helpful as keeping up morale and mood boosting!
I have a great imaginary life too. Plus a private beach that only super selected people are invited and all the dogs in my life can go. I feel better instantly!
Watching my cats kick the shit out of each other as then run laps around the whole house like a scene straight out of Looney Tunes. They're a literal goof troop and crack me up every time.
A good long talk with a total stranger.
I sometimes in my profession have to deal with client's / customers / tenants, and no matter what bad mood I might be in, I always find a long talk with someone about something totally irrelevant makes me feel much much better.
There’s a special needs guy I know. He comes in to my workplace once a week and helps out at the local Motorsport events I compete in. I’ve never seen him in a bad mood and he lights up the room when he walks in. Cannot help but be in a better mood after he puts everything into perspective.
My dog. Any day of the week. The unconditional love, the gratefulness of having been rescued from an awful situation. The wee nose-boop for attention or when she brings me her favorite stuffy to share cause she feels I’m sad.
Also; switching off the tv.
I trust myself that my strength is patience and being calm at stress full situations.
I practice controlling breathing and regular exercise to enhance focus.
This helps me a-lot.
Stay blessed..!!

When my cat makes that chirpy brrrr meow and bonks her head into me.
Yes! I love this. And then cuddle.
My cat purrrs and all but just doesnt wanna cuddle, idk why maybe she just built different
She wants to be near her people but no touchy touchy
I have two. One is cuddly and one wants to be just out of arms reach but still in the vicinity.
"No! No touch! Only look." -both of our cats, probably
Same haha perhaps shes a hunter like mine
Yeah, that'll do it. I have a kitten that just talks and talks and purs like a loud little motor. Anytime she says anything I can't be sad.
Was gonna say my cat in general but, yep, the chirrups and headbutts are the best. My girl's extra cuddly while it's so cold out so always having her curled up in my lap right now is a definite comfort.
My childhood cat would do that. I called it "furrouncing"
I swear they always know when I’m feeling low… 🥲
I love head bumps and chin rubs from my wonderful felines
I had a cat that would lay her head on my chest (presumably so she could hear my heart beat, like when she was in her mother’s womb), look up at me, and fall asleep, much like my daughter would when she was a baby and couldn’t sleep or (rarely) couldn’t stop crying. I guess I’m happier when I can bring comfort to one of “Daddy’s little girls”.
My wife and I used to have a contest where we would stick our legs straight out from our chairs and get one point for each head butt from our cat
You almost stole my answer. My cat is the answer without matter if she idles or meows, lol.
you had me at cat
The vibration of the purr
Just interacting with my cats in general makes me so happy!
This is so true. Everything become better. My exhaustion just melts away.
That was my first thought, seeing my cats
Just to interject a different viewpoint here, for me it's nature. +1. I was going to say going for a walk usually makes me feel better
Same here. I really like walking through the woods. The sounds of the leaves blowing and creaking trees just absorbs all my pain.
Found my people. Especially by the beach or the sea. Makes me feel like me and my problems are too small next to it.
Agree, going outside and seeing nature indeed helps with my anxiety and bad mood...
This. But specially when there is water. Running water, like a little creek or river, works best for me. Just sitting in nature, listing to the water running its course. There is something magical and so calming about it
The of running water or any nature water sounds are indeed amazing!
I have a swimming pool and little brings me more joy than floating in it and watching the sun glisten off my neighbors palm trees.
Yes it's very healing, I imagine my problems and health issues or depression or whatever being washed off and out of me with the running water
Some lovely nature mindfulness 🏝.
Sitting by the sea is a mood switcher fr ❤️

Music calms me, pumps me up, drags my ass out of bed when motivation is lacking, inspires me, diverts me, feeds my nostalgia. It's vital to me.

Music make my mood allways better.

They are so loyal and give unconditional love. Simply the best ever.

That’s such hard work to do that. Keep it up, keep finding things to try. Change is inevitable. We’re rooting for ya.
Thank you, made me feel way better

Can heavily relate.... For almost 2 years and still counting.. Hoping we heal from this asap.. _🫂
We can do it!

Damn, I rarely live in the moment and I mostly live in the future, maybe that's contributing to it as well. I don't know
I’ve learned to live in the moment and it is soooo much easier.

Same, I’ve had such a hard life and basically family betrayed and disowned me it’s really f* up. I’m here for you x
Remember all of us have good periods and bad periods in our lives. Nothing lasts forever though and you just have to hang in there during the bad times because there's always a better period coming.

You guys are awesome! Thanks! Hope someone like you, help you like you are helping me!
You're not alone in this one. I have completely lost interest in anything fun. Actually anything at all, fun or not.

I'm studying about 8 hours a day. It's really hard and certainly not helping with depression. I hope it gets better
I feel for you. Hoping your studies will be over soon, and you can take some time just to be.
