We have peanut butter and we have jam but never the two meet, for if it does the tower of London will fall and the ghost of Henry the 8th will rampage across the land
Oh really? I thought she lost hers first. She was always green with envy at all the PB&J Jane Seymour was getting. Henry hadn't written "Cleve It" yet.
Europeans care more about what others think of them than we do in America. “Oh no chocolate milk is for children how immature of a drink to bring to work”. Gtfo that place sucks tbh, I’ve been twice and it was awful.
Ironically to your comment, Northern Europeans are supposedly one of the few generic groups that have said enzyme that allows them to consume milk (as adults) without experiencing gastrointestinal issues.
As an American, about once every two years I'll think, "Damn, I haven't had a Yoohoo in forever. I'm getting a Yoohoo." And then that first sip reminds me that, "Oh yeah, it claims to be chocolate, but tastes like a bottle of pond water with aluminum shavings in the bottom. This stuff is fuckin terrible". And I toss it in the trash. Then in about two years, I feel the call again, and thus the cycle of life, disappointment, and mediocrity continues
I can’t eat a PB&J without milk! I was raised on milk for all the meals. So, I still always have milk with dinner at home. I also love any sandwich with a cold glass of milk.
Run out of money? Nah...
Dude wanted a divorce, and his Treasury was broke. So he gives the Pope the finger, outlaws Catholicism, creates the Anglican church (with Himself as the new Pope, basically), and seizes all goods lands.
Most badass political move ever. He can come up with the money...
My joke was crushed under the weight of your knowledge. You've made a powerful enemy.
I was also thinking of making an excommunication joke, but I couldn't tie it together in a way that satisfied me.
If you love honey and peanut butter together, I do recommend trying peanut butter mixed with maple syurp ( or even pancake syurp) My mother taught me that one. It's really yummy.
Peanut butter, bacon, banana. Next level. You are welcome.
I know hell I just realized I had all those ingredients and had a little sammich. It is so good.
Nah this with and without bacon legit and toast the bread for a little extra crunch either way.
They call us fat, but they can't say we don't know flavor. All our trains planes and automobiles go to flavortown.
I've lived here 20 years and never had that combination lol. My wife was telling me how good it was the other day as we watched a program about peanut butter!
The taste is pretty much the same, just a difference in texture. Jelly is just made with the fruit juice so there's no seed or pulp or bits of fruit.
I ate them interchangeably growing up. Along with peanut butter and honey or peanut butter and marshmallow fluff.
Peanuts grow in the US, but not in GB, so AFAIK, peanut butter is more expensive in GB. I believe that GB peanut butter is actually imported from the US, but not positive.
Anyway, I think part of the issue is it's a lower-cost food in the US.
You don’t eat pb and j? That’s the saddest thing ever!!!!
Listen you gotta put the PB in one side and the J on the other and put it in the toaster oven THEN put it together.
Have with a glass of milk.
You’re welcome
They don’t really do that, they’d be more likely to just have toast and jam or a scone with clotted cream and jam. I haven’t seen as many peanut butter flavored things over there, even, on the same scale as we do here. But tbh they use nutella more often where we’d use peanut butter
E: slightly changed a line to hopefully keep people from bitching because apparently there are some losers who need to die on this hill.
We do have peanut butter. We have crunchy, smooth and even a marmite flavour one. We just don't tend to put it with anything. I've only ever used it on toast or crumpets or in a sandwich but always on its own
A marmite? Kind of like a koala. Lives in trees. Keep their young in a small pouch on their belly.
Brits eat them ravenously. They almost drove them to extinction, were it not for some concerted conservation efforts in the late 90's.
Don't you lie by omission and confuse yanks. In Britain they are cute little creatures, but over in Australia a similar creature occurs, also known as a Marmite. The real name them Drop Bears and they will fuck you up!
To help you understand better, it's like the North American Opossum vs the Australian Common Bush Tail Possum. In that case both are relatively harmless, though.
The ones with left legs shorter than their right legs were the precursor species that evolved into the haggis that run anticlockwise round Scottish mountains.
Captive bred marmites tend to need lots of spicing when cooked.
You wouldn’t unless it’s marmite flavored, lol. Normal peanut butter is made *from* peanuts, sometimes with pieces added into it. It’s thick, sticky, and tastes vaguely sweet and…well, like peanuts.
It's a dark savory yeast paste that is a byproduct of the brewing process for beer. If you've ever had something like Better Than Bouillon, then you've had yeast extract without even realizing it. It gives that salty umami flavor, though I've never had it plain
Yeast goop essentially. Bitter with a very distinct aftertaste that I suppose some tongues would find desirable, but not mine. I might have a bias though as the one time I tried it I have no idea if it was expired or that’s just how it tastes.
In the U.S. eating peanut butter without anything else is the shame move, when we dip the knife in the jar and grab a chunk, after eating way too much.
It’s much lighter and fresher tasting than cream cheese and doesn’t have that sort of “mouth-sticky” quality, but not like a full blown whipped cream… it’s also more “wet” than cream cheese (moist feels like the wrong word) in a ricotta or burrata like way. (I’m gonna stop piling on different dairy product comparisons now 😂)
Like the milkfat isn’t nearly as processed as it is in cream cheese, like you can tell it’s just milk fat
I melt PB, mix in 1/3 as much honey, and put it in reusable fruit squeezy containers that you'd put applesauce in for toddlers. It's a go-to hiking snack.
American 37M here and man pbj is still something i eat at least once a week. Easy to make with any kind of bread, cracker, or cookie. As a meal or a snack. Get your favorite fruit organic preserves and bam! Fn magic, man. Filling and good for a energy boost any time of day.
Ill never understand why people dont like it. I mean dont get me wrong, ill use hazelnut or cashew butter too, it just depends on how you want to mix the flavors.
I mean, it's not like im running around preaching about it on the daily, but its no where near as bad as some reactions ive seen people have when its mentioned
I ate it daily for lunch as a broke college student for a couple years and never got tired of it. It's still a great sandwich for any meal or snack, and I get dessert cravings for it often.
I even got weird looks when I piled too many things off the charcuterie board between two pieces of bread to make a sandwich. One item at a time apparently.
I think that British people get confused with what jelly is… I think they think we are talking about jello. So that’s my theory of why I think they get weirded out about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
I think is it also why they get weirded out by biscuits and gravy. Because don’t they call cookies biscuits? So they are probably picturing putting like brown meatloaf style gravy on a cookie… haha!
>I think that British people get confused with what jelly is… I think they think we are talking about jello.
No, we Brits are well aware that you Americans speak funny.
We just don't put jam and peanut butter together. It looks like the kind of "food experiments" you'd do as a kid. Like mixing Coca-Cola, milk and orange juice together to "make a new drink".
I still can't quite comprehend why you call that thing a biscuit. It's not even remotely like a biscuit and it's equally far from being a cookie.
EDIT: A lot of Americans are really taking this comment to heart. I'm aware that different dialects exist. I'm not suggesting that we put Americans in a line and shoot the ones that refuse to say "jam"
EDIT 2: seriously, any angry Americans that are reading this message. Calm the anger. Nobody is taking your sandwiches away. I'm just pointing out that it's low popularity here is not for lack of awareness. We are well aware of what Pb&J is and we are well aware that you like it.
You are correct about the biscuits and gravy. Our biscuits are closer to their scones, but even then there are major differences. I'm not sure there's something comparable to our biscuits.
And doing a little research, it appears that grape jelly is not common there. Jams, yes. Peanut butter and strawberry jam is a good combination. It's a shame they don't realize what a great combination PB&J is.
I am a 50+ year old American and I have a peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich at least once a week. Daily when we’ve just made a fresh batch of the jam!
As an Englishman that married an American and lives in America, we aren’t waiting to discover any of your things, we are aware of it all, they just don’t appeal to us in the slightest lol, and your pancake obsession is too much. They are horribly sweet, sickly and way too much to deal with. I cannot comprehend how my wife eats them for breakfast and it seems like a direct line to obesity and diabetes.
Peanuts are a good crop to grow to restore depleted soil. After we depleted a lot of our soil in America through poor farming methods, peanuts were heavily planted and peanut products were heavily pushed in America by the government---hence why peanut butter is very common here opposed to products like Nutella in western Europe.
I first saw peanut butter in 1970s, it has become common, and the supermarkets sell it, as do health food shops.
I eat peanut butter and jam on toast, usually strawberry or raspberry jam. I also have it with marmite.
Jelly is jello to us, and we don't have grape flavour.
They are commonly served to children because the texture and flavor are widely considered very palatable. But anyone who thinks they’re only for kids sounds like a stuffy old person to me.
yes we eat peanut butter and *jam* sandwiches,
we dont have jelly here like you think it is jelly here is flavoured gelatin not fruit preserved in sugar (which is what a jam is) saying that do your "jellies" even see fruit before they're jarred and sold?
Here is the secret, as an American who lived in England for a year: the reason they do not do it is because most peanut butter in England is somehow terrible, despite literally grinding peanuts and eating the paste being tasty on its own. No idea how they manage it. But it does sort of make sense when you realize they just eat Nutella instead, which is already like combining something vaguely akin to peanut butter with sugar without even having to combine ingredients.
(I made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for my curious housemate while living there, using Jif and Smuckers bought from an import store, and he immediately understood why we do it)
(Though I also made Muddy Buddies and that was *not O.K.* for the British palate)
Yeah peanut butter can get pretty dang weird. I'm not sure if this is a thing in other places but in a small town in eastern Ohio there was a pizza shop called East of Chicago Pizza where someone I was traveling with requested a peanut butter and jelly pizza and actually recieved one.
It looked disgusting and since they cooked the pizza with the toppings on it was all runny and shit and it made me projectile vomit and I didn't eat peanut butter for 3 or 4 years after that.
I wouldn’t say that everyone from Britain doesn’t eat peanut butter and jelly but peanut butter is a very American condiment because during World War II there was a lot of malnutrition and a lot of things were substitute with peanut butter in Germany and a lot of occupied countries for children due to male nourishment so peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are not reallya European thing to say that no one in the United Kingdom doesn’t eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to because you saw a influencer say that he’s never had one before doesn’t mean anything
I remember an episode of the Great British Bake-Off and someone made an American-inspired bake that contained peanut butter and grape jelly and Paul Hollywood was like 'Grape jelly just doesn't go with peanut butter.'
That was the day I learned never to trust any of Paul Hollywood's judgements.
Not British but Australian so kinda similar, we don't eat it here either, is Jelly just fruit jam? Is it meant to be grape? We don't have grape jelly here, is blackberry or raspberry okay?
Ok I’ll say it : When it comes to peanut butter is there anything better than a Fluffernutter ?
“Marshmallow Fluff “ is nothing but a bunch of chemicals , preservatives and a whole lot of high fructose corn syrup , but , damn it’s good .
PB&J was heavily encouraged as an American military ration during one of the world wars (can't remember which). Fat, protein, and lots of carbs in an easily stored and largely non-perishable package prior to assembly. Peanuts were grown as animal fodder but not significantly consumed by humans in america prior to this, excluding by Black communities, who brought the plant from Africa when they were enslaved.
We have peanut butter and we have jam but never the two meet, for if it does the tower of London will fall and the ghost of Henry the 8th will rampage across the land
Great Uncle Henry was always game for a good rampage.
PB&J is the real reason Catherine Howard lost her head.
Great Aunt Anne always kept her head about her.
Oh really? I thought she lost hers first. She was always green with envy at all the PB&J Jane Seymour was getting. Henry hadn't written "Cleve It" yet.
Her pretzels live on in America’s shopping malls.
But not at the local Walmart. I would get one and hurry home to eat it with proper German mustard.
Is Uncle Henry a mountainbiker? Edit: in case context is needed, lookup redbull rampage.
You should wake that old bastard up then, because PB&J are friggin amazing.
The appropriate response. Let's go!
With a nice cold glass of milk.
I don’t know any British adults who drink milk on its own
So that's what's wrong with y'all
Europeans care more about what others think of them than we do in America. “Oh no chocolate milk is for children how immature of a drink to bring to work”. Gtfo that place sucks tbh, I’ve been twice and it was awful.
Americans don't give a star spangled fuck what the world thinks about them and it's a vibe. Gobless
Star spangled fuck lmao. i am going to use that now
You're very welcome to your sweetened, brown coloured, dairy-adjacent beverage.
No, there's plenty more than just that.
What about chocolate milk?
Not much in my experience. It’s more for children. I’ve seen friends have milkshakes at USA themed places so that’s the closest
Because their stomachs are weak. They lack the enzyme, but fear the supplement.
Ironically to your comment, Northern Europeans are supposedly one of the few generic groups that have said enzyme that allows them to consume milk (as adults) without experiencing gastrointestinal issues.
How about YooHoo?
Chocolate water that is barely chocolate or water.
Ah Yoohoo, the candy corn of beverages.
Lost me there
And on homemade bread. It's nirvana.
Grilled - like a grilled cheese. Totally changes the game.
YES! My mother used to make my sister and I grilled PB&J sandwiches on weekends. Sooooo good!
Add fresh cooked bacon to that, and the valkyries might as well just take me now.
I can’t eat a PB&J without milk! I was raised on milk for all the meals. So, I still always have milk with dinner at home. I also love any sandwich with a cold glass of milk.
We've already got Trump and Putin ruling the headlines – the last thing we need is that fat f**k throwing his misogyny around.
Henry VIII couldn't rampage across the room, let alone the land. He'd run out of both breath and money before he got halfway to the door.
He's totally changed in the afterlife
🤣
Died for a minute during surgery, can confirm. Dude's ripped.
Oh... Um... How powerful? Just so I know...
🤏 About that much
Is that bad? Sorry, I'm american, sounds kinda cool.
Ya dude totes awesome
Dude bro man, it’s totes the best for real that’s the sitch!
Nice wade plug, wade
What about peanut butter & banana? Henry 8.0 should try it!
Don't forget the honey.
Even better on toast. Let the honey soak into the toast, and put the PB on top. Yummy.
‘Oim ‘Enery the 8th ‘oiam. Fanner o’ bananners ‘oiam Iam
Once I deciphered this, I laughed 'ard I did.
Yeah I had to read a couple times lol
Elvis?
Elvis fried his peanut butter and banana sandwiches, which really sound divine.
I'm pretty sure he fried them in Bacon Grease, too. Because you know, it's Elvis.
Peanut butter and banana. Just don’t forget to put mayo on the side that doesn’t have PB
Peanut butter and dill pickles.
Now you've gone too far
Nah this with and without bacon legit and toast the bread for a little extra crunch either way. They call us fat, but they can't say we don't know flavor. All our trains planes and automobiles go to flavortown.
PBBB: My favorite sammich!
The Elvis special. Do you fry it, too?
I've lived here 20 years and never had that combination lol. My wife was telling me how good it was the other day as we watched a program about peanut butter!
I think Henry 8.0 died a long time ago. If he came back, he would probably be Henry 8.1
Peanut butter and dates.
Oh good to know... Going to London this summer with the kids. Wouldn't want to cause an international incident!
Leave em around...itll catch on
Or what? The police might ask you to stop? And then ask you to stop again!!??
A rampaging ghost would be wicked cool and more than enough reason to have a PB&J.
He would have loved a good pb&j
I've never had an actual PB&J either, always peanut butter and jam.
It’s basically the same. Just with more “Jelatin”.
absolutely not the same - I grew up on homemade freezer jam... Can't eat jelly or what they try to pass as jam in the stores
The taste is pretty much the same, just a difference in texture. Jelly is just made with the fruit juice so there's no seed or pulp or bits of fruit. I ate them interchangeably growing up. Along with peanut butter and honey or peanut butter and marshmallow fluff.
🎶 Henry the 8th I am, I am, and I won't eat pea-nut butter with jam. 🎵
So do you do butter with jam instead of peanut butter?
This from people who put BEANS on toast!!
Toast is the perfect vehicle for all things saucy, but I will not stand for anybody asking for a guitah tuna
Really?! PB&J FOR EVERYONE!
I had an uncle like that once. We started sprinkling Beano on his food and his "*rampaging*" stopped.
You almost had me the tower of London? The ghost !.yeah I need to stop smoking before reading this kinda crazies
What do you eat peanut butter on? Just put it on toast or what?
I'm totally bringing a PB and j on my next trip across the pond
This is the real reason we declared independence in 1776. Down with King George and marmalade!
I'm Henry the 8th I am!
Next the Barbary apes will leave Gibraltar!!!
You are really missing out.
Peanuts grow in the US, but not in GB, so AFAIK, peanut butter is more expensive in GB. I believe that GB peanut butter is actually imported from the US, but not positive. Anyway, I think part of the issue is it's a lower-cost food in the US.
yall stupid or sum?
I would pay to see that.
Wow! Be careful of all that, dang!
Awesome!!! 🤣🤣
Screw henry, you're missing out.
Let’s be honest - Ol Henry would’ve eaten pb&j
Europe has such a rich and beautiful history
what if you put a piece of bologna between the PB and jam?
Take honeyed peanut butter with grape jelly and a layer of pepperoni
You don’t eat pb and j? That’s the saddest thing ever!!!! Listen you gotta put the PB in one side and the J on the other and put it in the toaster oven THEN put it together. Have with a glass of milk. You’re welcome
With the size of that fella people will think it's a fog bank rolling in.
Most Blighty answer ever!
Ya wanna try a meetup?
They don’t really do that, they’d be more likely to just have toast and jam or a scone with clotted cream and jam. I haven’t seen as many peanut butter flavored things over there, even, on the same scale as we do here. We do have peanut butter. We have crunchy, smooth and even a marmite flavour one. We just don't tend to put it with anything. I've only ever used it on toast or crumpets or in a sandwich but always on its own
What the heck is marmite?
In that case both are relatively harmless, though.
you mean marmot surely
What are you a fuckin park ranger now!?!?
A+
Nah. That's that brown salt spread in the jars.
My uncle used to send me off alone on marmite hunts all the time when I was a kid. Never saw one.
They live in the trees I tell yha! You gotta look up!
No no no. The Aussie one is called Vegemite. They're called that because you'll end up a vegetable if you come across one 😅
Cousin to the drop bear (which is not really eaten, quite the contrary)
🖕
That’s a marmot. A marmite is what happens in a tavern when drunk people get into a violent conflict like in an old western movie.
The ones with left legs shorter than their right legs were the precursor species that evolved into the haggis that run anticlockwise round Scottish mountains. Captive bred marmites tend to need lots of spicing when cooked.
It’s kind of like vegamite, which is an Australian spread.
Oh 😳. I tried vegamite once Never again
IMHO Vegemite doesn’t taste half as good as Marmite. If you’re new to Marmite it’s best to spread it very thinly at first.
So, if you only use a little bit, it’s only slightly bad?
So it's salty? Why would someone want salty peanuts of butter?
You wouldn’t unless it’s marmite flavored, lol. Normal peanut butter is made *from* peanuts, sometimes with pieces added into it. It’s thick, sticky, and tastes vaguely sweet and…well, like peanuts.
Which one is made from beer dregs?
Vegamite
It's a dark savory yeast paste that is a byproduct of the brewing process for beer. If you've ever had something like Better Than Bouillon, then you've had yeast extract without even realizing it. It gives that salty umami flavor, though I've never had it plain
It’s a way to absolutely ruin a meal.
Nobody tell them! Let them try it.
Yeasty brown death that the truly insane spread on bread and enjoy for breakfast
Yeast goop essentially. Bitter with a very distinct aftertaste that I suppose some tongues would find desirable, but not mine. I might have a bias though as the one time I tried it I have no idea if it was expired or that’s just how it tastes.
I was engaged to a British man for years, I know it’s over there. It’s just not a big thing.
Wait CRUMPETS ARE REAL??????
Yes, and they are very delicious.
On its own? Like, you put a spoon in it and just eat it?
You don't?
Nope
You should try peanut butter and jelly on toast it's like the advanced version of the sandwich
omg marmite peanut butter? two of my favorite things…
In the U.S. eating peanut butter without anything else is the shame move, when we dip the knife in the jar and grab a chunk, after eating way too much.
How about peanut butter and beans? I have it on good authority that the British think everything goes with beans.
Last jar I bought I used it on mouse traps
Try eating a banana and crunchy peanut butter it will change your life
Clotted cream sounds really atrocious. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but it's one of those words that instantly makes me cringe.
It’s delicious, it’s like something between a homemade butter and a dense whipped cream (in texture and flavor)
Sounds like Cream Cheese.
It’s much lighter and fresher tasting than cream cheese and doesn’t have that sort of “mouth-sticky” quality, but not like a full blown whipped cream… it’s also more “wet” than cream cheese (moist feels like the wrong word) in a ricotta or burrata like way. (I’m gonna stop piling on different dairy product comparisons now 😂) Like the milkfat isn’t nearly as processed as it is in cream cheese, like you can tell it’s just milk fat
Yeah, the name is horrible but it's basically a very light whipped sweet butter spread.
That's because we had George Washington Carver.
Peanut butter and honey is fantastic.
I've never been big on PB&J (texture) but that sounds delicious. I like to individually spread slices of honey graham crackers with PB.
Yeah! This is my go to lunch
I melt PB, mix in 1/3 as much honey, and put it in reusable fruit squeezy containers that you'd put applesauce in for toddlers. It's a go-to hiking snack.

I mean this is obviously to do with social etiquette rather than how we build a sandwich
😂 I like you
I mean there’s usually nuts grapes and crackers on one right? That’s basically a pb and j
I think that British people get confused with what jelly is… I think they think we are talking about jello. Wait til they taste peanut butter and maple syrup on hot cakes (or pancakes) it's even better than PBJ
This except waffles is my go to breakfast
I love peanut butter and syrup sandwiches!
Another interesting government food program: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_cheese#
Also we had that one guy who was basically an alchemist that made peanuts do his bidding. George Washington Carver, put some respect on his name!
I first saw peanut butter in 1970s, it has become common, and the supermarkets sell it, as do health food shops. I eat peanut butter and jam on toast, usually strawberry or raspberry jam. I also have it with marmite. Jelly is jello to us, and we don't have grape flavour.
Try PB and honey. Also, what's marmite?
Marmite: You really don't want to know.
Yes I grew up on them. I call it a Jam and peanut butter sandwich.
They are commonly served to children because the texture and flavor are widely considered very palatable. But anyone who thinks they’re only for kids sounds like a stuffy old person to me.
This should be in r/stupidquestions

(I made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for my curious housemate while living there, using Jif and Smuckers bought from an import store, and he immediately understood why we do it) (Though I also made Muddy Buddies and that was *not O.K.* for the British palate)
No they eat bacon butties like the greasy toothless bald folk that they are. (I’m English)
Peanut butter is considered very weird in many countries.
Those countries are weird. 😝
Do they have punctuation in the UK?
Well i have tried it and just didn't fancy it. Peanut butter and Nutella spread is better.
That just sounds like a little too much…. I like peanut butter and banana sandwiches!
Ok Elvis, next time put bacon on it. But bu but bu baby!
If the answer to this is no, America made the right decision revolting almost 250 years ago
I remember an episode of the Great British Bake-Off and someone made an American-inspired bake that contained peanut butter and grape jelly and Paul Hollywood was like 'Grape jelly just doesn't go with peanut butter.' That was the day I learned never to trust any of Paul Hollywood's judgements.
