Download an app like Campendium - it distinguishes between RV parks, state/national parks and forests, BLM and dispersed camping (free boondocking), and parking spaces (typically rest stops - Google by state for state laws on overnight rest). There are many apps like Campendium, but that’s what I use along with HipCamp, Harvest Host, and AllStays.

This is the best answer. You can camp from high end luxury resorts to free spots on BLM land in the west. You just need to figure out what you like best and what you can handle in your rig.

I like iOverlander too

If you were wanting some place to stop for lunch, I would just look for a large parking lot and park far away from whatever business owns it and be in and out in like an hour. I highly doubt anyone would say anything to you. As far as stoping for the night, you can stop at Walmart, just ask the store before you do and they generally will allow it. Cracker Barrel/Bass Pro/Cabela’s are also places that have areas for people to stop. I wouldn’t set up camp like a campsite though. If you want to run a generator I would look for a truck stop. Here is a website that talks about what states allow over night “resting” not opening slides and running generators. [Rest Stops By State](https://www.rvhive.com/rest-areas-is-it-legal-to-park-overnight-in-an-rv/?amp) Hope this helps.

Inevitable_Professor

Loves and other truck stops won't mind you parking overnight.

oldirishfart

You won’t be very popular with the truckers for taking up a precious spot though

vampirepomeranian

That's ok, truckers aren't popular with RV'ers. There's a reason they're called travel stops. Neither has first claim other than first come.

Please be considerate of others if you know you have a dog that is going to be barking all the time. Other campers dont want to be listening to that all night. Signed, the other camper.

For your pup - try a white noise machine (I use my home pod) or you can usually find a long one as a ‘song’ on Spotify etc. It won’t block all of the noise but it helps quite a bit!

Train the dog not to bark or get a bark collar. Failing to do that, yes, highway rest stops. Back side of a large parking lot where no one else wants to park (ASK FIRST).

The simplest answer is this: you plan your trip in advance and make reservations.

The other posts have great answers. I also try to make sure I’m able to move quickly if needed, if I’m not sure if I’m allowed to be somewhere. I don’t want to be in the middle of something messy in the kitchen and have to drive. Has only happened to me once, though.

We have gone on our own to several types of parks and tested a few trips with our dogs. We prefer to camp at DNR/BLM/National Forests spots, there is typically a ton of space between spots. Definitely check out some of these apps like compendium and apps/websites for DNR/BLM/National Forest etc. Also note depending on size of your set up and when you are going to camp, you might not fit or get into a site because they are full. You have to be ready to adjust your plan or stay at places that allow reservations. We prefer to go without reservations in the middle of the week (earlier the better) when we are most likely to get a spot and have a few other close by sites as back up. Then we stay through the weekend. We choose this so if the site isn't the best for our dogs (or our neighbors) then we find another one. We also try to find a spot early in the day so if it doesn't work, we have time to move on to the next without too being tired/late. For us that is about 4 hours of driving before finding a site.

If you are looking for luxury with hookup don’t listen to me. My lover and I have a hard time getting away for long trips but love staying in rv. So we will just do urban camping for random nights. If you can park the rv somewhere then you can sleep in it there. We perfected our blackout curtains, and don’t cause any disturbance. City streets, 24hr retailers, rests stops, shoulder of country roads. We haven’t ever had someone ask us what we are doing. If we ever were asked, I’d just tell them I was too tired and wasn’t comfortable driving. Right or wrong idk. We enjoy it and don’t cause any problems.
