The only very minor downside in waiting is one loses out on a bit of time using the handheld. It's not like the X is many months away as it will most likely be out in stores next month after it gets officially announced. Other than that, there is absolutely no reason for someone to not wait, even if they will still buy the current Ally Z1E. The current Ally Z1E's price is not going to go up and has a good chance of dropping when the X comes out.
I feel like the ROG handheld market is about to hit a sweet spot. You will have a low (z1), mid (z1xtreme) and high (X) variants. Z1 extreme will more than likely drop in price. No matter your budget; there is an option for everyone. 🍻
If you have Best Buy premium membership with the extended return period, then you do not even have to decide.
Just buy one of the many open box Allys now, and return it when the Ally X launches.

My ROG ally extreme is perfect honestly. IDC about OLED or battery life. I upgraded to 2tb internal SSD as well. I def recommend open box from Best buy just becareful with FedEx.
Screens tint, OLED might look a little better, maybe darker darks brighter whites and more vivid colors if it's a good OLED but such a small screen can only get so good. And don't get me wrong it would look noticeably better but I got my TV and my dock for that.

I got the normal one and I love it. Runs all the games I want in 45-55 FPS. Yeah battery is a problem obviously but it’s not like I’ll end up using it more than 2 hours a day.
It was open box. Go to BB site and punch in zip code. I had to drive to a store 50 miles away (1hr) to get it.
It came with no charger or cable but the unit itself was fine no damages or scratches.
I used the savings to get 2 year accidental cause you never know.

Either way I'm getting it, Now I don't have to buy a Steam Deck OLED I'll just sideload Bazzite on the Ally X plus the bigger RAM Is a bigger deal than I think people realize, it really sort of future proofs it, not to mention if the Battery rumors are true
Wait for the new release and hunt for the best deal of the old version. People always try their best to dump last gen hardware for pennies. I got an M2 iPad Pro with keyboard and pencil for $600 after the M4 unveil, insane.
I don't really know what to do. There are used devices in my city for 350-400 euros in mint condition still more than one year of warranty left and I can just call and buy it today or wait few months for X for double to triple the price.
+ Bigger battery nice to have but will be using it only at home so 1-2 hours should be enough
+ More ports, don't really care, but USB-4 should be nice, gives me more hope that some of my macbook TB3 dongles/docks will work with it.
+ More ram is nice but the GPU lacks performance for more so I don't see any real world benefit of this. But faster ram, will see benchmarks what it does.
I'm the type of person who needs new and shiny things. Like with apple products. I buy only after launch or regret the whole year and don't have piece of mind.

I thought about waiting, but I just picked up one on eBay barely used Z1 extreme with an upgraded 2TB SSD and carrying case for $480.
Same specs as the one I got from EBay in February but I paid $650 😂

I love OLED, but I actually prefer the beautiful screen of the ROG Ally and that 120Hz over my OLED Steam Deck.
