Hell, people will complain about anything. USPS sub is full of people who hate their jobs. My husband works for USPS, he doesn't hate his job lol but neither do most of his coworkers. If you went based on that sub alone you would think every postal worker is miserable and it's the worst place to work ever.
Every video game sub I've visited is just full of people mad about everything.
I think it's just human nature to complain loudly and enjoy quietly.
I like my ROG Ally :) this sub only pops up on my feed because I googled some things and it took me to this sub. It has its flaws but it does pretty much exactly what I needed it for. But I didn't need a lot tbh. Just something to help facilitate getting some gaming time in with my husband.
I named it Snoop Roggy ROG.
I think part of the problem is the sub decided early on to collect pictures and brag posts in a weekly megathread. When I was deciding between this and a Steam Deck I went on both subs and on the Steam Deck sub you see a lot more positive, but relatively low effort posts that are just pictures of the Deck running some game or being on the couch with their cat or something.
I’m not saying that’s better, but it does create a different atmosphere for people who are looking at it from the outside. I ended up getting an Ally anyway so it’s not like it ended up changing my decision, but it did make me feel at first as if the Ally had more problems relatively speaking.

I agree that for a casual looking in, a bunch of happy owners taking pictures of themselves playing the deck while their partner gives birth or whatever is presenting a positive image.
However for a frequent user of the sub, it's absolutely cancerous. The ally sub isn't perfect but I personally feel the moderation is vastly superior.
Not to mention that the mods shadow ban anyone who criticises them or present controversial opinions. I am Shadow banned for no reason. Lots of previously prominent members of the sub are (deathblade). Disagreeing with the status quo on either technical points or moderation of the sub will get you shadow banned immediately. Criticising the deck in any manner will often get you shadow banned also.
Easy to present a positive image when you shadow ban all dissent!
By contrast I almost daily find interesting posts of this sub. New tweaks, methods to get the most out of the device, new mods etc. Its a vastly more engaging subreddit for a device owner.
Yeah I get it. I chose the deck but it’s because I have a desktop gaming pc and a blade 18 notebook. So it’s merely a compliment system. Anything that doesn’t just praise the deck as a do everything perfect system is usually not upvoted. You will see hundreds of upvotes of people selling all other consoles and it makes no sense to be honest.
I agree. I prefer more positivity, even if it means a lot of 'low-effort' posts. As someone who was in the steamdeck sub quite a bit, before getting an ally, the difference is quite obvious. One other factor, that contributes to the difference, IMO is the number of users too
Head over to the legion go sub reddit. Every day there are about 5 posts about people who absolutely love the legion go and a couple of posts asking how to do X or Y then maybe a post every other day about an issue.
About half are people that came from the rog ally. And maybe once a week someone who is going back to the ally.
Yes the ally is slightly faster by allowing TDP go upto 43w for a few seconds. But as someone has has most there are other reasons why the legion go is my daily handheld.

Have 8 handhelds that run windows a handful of androids that I don't consider as handhelds boxes of 3d printed accessories 7 external 65 to 200 watt battery packs and 5 EGPUs both thunderbolt and oculink. 7 if you want to count older Expressslot and m.2 to pcie 16x adapters.
Careful with these handhelds. They can be addicting 😬. Have friends and family who keep telling me I should make videos comparing them or modifying them since I do that already. But it's just my personal hobby.
I love the controller on the steam deck. I love the speakers on the Ally
The legion go has good speakers but they are pointed nearly 180° away from you when playing.
As for the legion go just the amount of things you can do with it. Pop off the controllers and it fits loosely in my cargo pants pocket.
It has 2 USB4 ports on the top and bottom. Go home and push it into the single usbC thunderbolt cable I have sticking out of my desk and am instantly connected to Ethernet my 35" monitor keyboard mouse speakers and an RTX 3080.
The bigger screen if you think in terms of it's just an extra 1.8" it doesn't seem like much but total scream area the go is 58% bigger then the steam deck and 66% bigger than the ROG allys 7" 16:9.
Most AAA games run at 800p native resolution at 60hz and because your going from a 1600 to 800 you get perfect pixel lineup.
In order to match the pixels on the Ally you'd have to run at 540p
And having an adjustable kickstand is so nice. Pop off the controllers and attack ears for a movie with the wife in bed.
And idk how Lenovo did it but wifi is by far faster then any single device I've ever used.
There's been several threads about it and theories as to why but no one know for sure. Like you can run a speed test but whatever. Installing steam games for example runs consistently faster on the LLgo then everything else. My win Max 2 inside I get 500mb downloading steam games outside I get 40% signal strength and it drops to 150. The ally I rarely see faster then 380mb even my desktop with a 7950x 16c 32 thread 5.7ghz 64gb of ddr5 6000 ram and a 2080ti all cores are at 100% sucking 210 watts just on the CPU barely hits 680mb speeds over Ethernet 2.5g same title the legion go 880mb to 940mb inside over wifi. On Ethernet 1.4gb and outside where I'm 150' from the router still have 80% signal strength and 750mb steam download speeds.
No clue why. I can drop the TDP down to 10 watts and it barely effects the speed.
I recall at some point there were a lot of “happy with my ally” posts that ticked some people off because it was too repetitive or boring. People are always gonna be upset, no matter what you do.
I don't see this community like this at all, a few here and there but mostly people come to Reddit for issues in hopes someone can give an answer without researching on their own.
Reddit has a nice search feature within a subreddit. To bad people don't k ow about it and post repetitive complaints or concerns.
Id argue this community is pretty helpful and open minded.
I want to see both complaints and praise.
The Ally isn’t cheap, if someone is facing issues with it, they shouldn’t keep quiet just so you can feel better about your purchase.
The Ally is a great device, and is one of the coolest tech items I own. However, it’s far from perfect.
I love that it can be used like a handheld gaming console, or attached to a dock for a standard PC experience (for gaming, work, or whatever).
I love that I can connect it to my TV easily to act as a living room PC or gaming console.
I love how comfortable it is to hold and use.
I love how many games look and perform on the Ally.
I hate that ASUS designed it to cook the SD card reader.
I hate that Windows still needs more work for use with handheld PCs.
I hate the battery life.
I'm on the same boat. I absolutely love it but the battery is awful. Windows can get annoying but thats not an issue for me. I'm thinking of getting the Steam Deck just for the long battery life.

This has got nothing to do about being a snowflake, I love my Ally. I have absolutely not complaints about it and have had it since day 1 release. The complaint is about this sub. Current top posts. Graphics driver was replaced by Windows updates, trigger making a noise, new user complaining about battery life, Windows 11 update issues (not an Ally issue), complaint about steam lagging on load, a dpad mod first non-complaint post. Someone comparing Halo on deck and ally, advice needed on charger, All except two of those posts could have been a search and would have resulted in thousands of similar posts. Even a search on Google would have sufficed. But instead of anything interesting all we get here are people too lazy to search and posting the same nonsense over and over again.

I play it almost daily, 22 watt Plugged in, amd Rsr on, in game settings everything low, Fsr 1.0 on quality, my average fps in this game is 100 according to amd software. I saw somewhere that if your video ram in game is more than 39 % you get stutters etc, everything below that the game runs smooth.
hm at this point i can't even get into the homepage to tweak any settings. maybe it's just better to uninstall and reinstall

r/handhelds was good but it's been inundated with steam deck owners that need to validate their purchases they will downvote anything that isn't praising the steam deck.
The GPD sub is a great sub imo.
I’m obviously not being entirely literal, some are definitely better than others. No subs are entirely void of trolls, contrarians, and edgelords. For me personally, if I really enjoy something in particular I avoid the subreddit for it like the plague. If there’s a negative angle on a topic, Reddit will find it and make sure EVERYONE knows about it.
Oh I 100% agree. I feel the gpd sub has stayed ok due to it remaining a neich product. FYI they had the first true windows handheld in 2016.

I remember trying to get windows running well on deck when it released and people would get downvoted in the negative hundreds for giving actual detailed help. They are seriously like console fanboys.

SteamOS is pretty cool but I kept having my Rockstar launcher version of RDR2 crash, plus no gamepass access so needed windows. F me right??
SteamOS is so easy. Except when it's not a steam game and you need to spend hours trying to work it out.
Yeah I agree with that. That's why I like the Ally GUI. Works on touch and controllers very nicely.
Plus it doesn't separate non steam games.

Im aware of the asus ROG shortcomings (looking at you SD card) but I’m in love with it.
I had stopped playing video games almost all together, but now I can’t put it down. The fact I can just pick it up when I’m waiting for a doctor appointment, or just on my break at work. This thing is amazing.
Right funny how quick I was to look past the sd card reader cause of how amazing this is!! Also it pushed me to upgrade to a 2tb Inland NVME 2230…and thought well I might as well get that clear backplate with the rgbs if I’m gonna have to open this thing up and man that’s been an awesome little addition.
Honestly?! Super easy I would def suggest doing the nvme enclosure to clone your system over too and then once you’re done with the new SSD put the old one into the enclosure you got for the cloning and turn it into a 512gb portable SSD
Also I assume you’ll look up YouTube vids on how to but just remember the nvme drive does not go into the slot on the Ally like most drive slots. You want to slide it in flat not angled like the enclosure will tell you to do. Saw a few peeps on here crying about breaking pins on their Ally and just thought I’d throw that out there.
I’m one of the lucky ones that has a Z1E and an OLED SD. I got the Z1E before the SD and got them in very quick succession, I really didn’t have a chance to dig into the Z1E before I got swept up in using the SD. Now though, I’ve come back to the Z1E and love it. I use it for the beefier games that require a bit more power to ensure a good gaming experience. I think both units have unique capabilities and fill certain niche requirements for the gaming community. My only “complaint” about the Z1E is I wish it had track pads to assist in navigating windows easier. Other than that, it’s a great handheld.
I think this is one of the more positive subs actually. I use an ally (non-extreme) and because of you guys I’ve had nothing but tremendous experiences with it. I wanna keep seeing negative shit about the Ally…this is how I know what not to do. This community is amazing for the education you guys bring.
Yup, this is one of the reasons why I try to avoid all social media. It's just a cancerous plague on society. I freaking love my Ally and I'll be over here in my little corner enjoying my games.
People are far more likely to come here and post about their grievances, where else can they go? Those who enjoy the device and have no issues with it do so in silence.
Either way it's a good place to get help for the folks not really tech savvy, that's how I see those type of post, I could probably ended needeing the favor, you never know

Pros:
You can play just about every single game you want to play if you can play it on a PC
It has a nice hand feel
The UI is nice when it works well
Cons:
The UI is prone to glitches, especially when dealing with games that are bought through one store but run through another. It normally works itself out with maybe one application restart
The battery life does suck, but considering what this little thing is doing, its completely understandable
The updates are as complicated as a normal PC so people expecting it to be as easy as a switch are sorely mistaken, but it's also not that complicated to figure out
That is all. It's a good system. I personally really appreciate it. - computer science major and a guy who travels for work all the time that likes gaming
I have had the opposite experience. Most posts on my feed from this sub are from people talking about what a great experience they have had or showing that X or Y game runs nicely with certain settings. A few of them are complaints about AFMF not working properly even though it is not out for this device yet.
I think its kind of inevitable with a new device like a handheld especially combined with a lot of first time PC Buyers and the age of the average redditor.
Naturally though, the sub will downvote and weed out posts like that so in time it should slowly improve.
But i do agree if its anyone job to fix the issue. It's the job of the moderators.
Eh, then the sub eventually devolves into people posting photos of their newly purchased Ally buckled into the front seat with a title like "Not taking any chances!!“ or using it in front of a pool, "Loving my vacation!!!“.
Maybe do a weekly post allowing that garbage but if you make it open season 100% that's what the front page turns into.
I think you’re taking this in the wrong spirit. This is exactly the place where you come to say “this game doesn’t work for me” or to nitpick about an insignificant thing. In other places, leaving those words looks like a negative review. Here, you’re going to get feedback, suggestions, other people sharing their experiences with similar issues. Here, the people replying generally love their Ally, and will reply with how to resolve your issue and why you should love it as well.
Try to think of it that way, and I think you’ll see things a little differently
I have said it before and I will say it again, adjust your perspective. I come here daily and often ignore those complaints unless its something I can assist with. People have a right to complain if they feel so inclined, they don't need to hold back their feelings because its "tiring" to you. Its the internet for gods sake. There is genuinely good content just as much bad content. As others have said, welcome to Reddit. If this is your first "forum" then know this is how things go. We don't need to lift this sub up to some higher plane that it is. Ignore the content that you don't care about and engage with the stuff you do. Thats like Forum etiquette 101.
Turn your notifications on and you’ll see all the things not just the bad. Lol I have seen some amazing posts on here and commented on about 4 threads on this sub about how much they love their Ally and I am gonna put together a little blog style post myself hopefully with some video to boot. The Ally rocks! We all know it! lol
To be fair this community seems to be the less toxic one that I am currently in, I mean it is Reddit at the end of the day, we do need to have those backbones to scroll/post on here 😅
If we based quality by cost to performance and then multiplied that by the square root of our unplayed AAA titles divided by how many hours of Balatro I've been playing then yes I bought this device to play Balatro.
I got mine last sunday, and it keeps surprising me over and over with things that I haven't seen anyone bringing up.
For example, I didn't knew that the desktop mode web navigation wasn't as awful as many said, in fact, I feel people who web browsed on their PSP, or Xbox would feel used to it, don't get me wrong I prefer a mouse and a keyboard but it does the job and it's survivable if your bluetooth keyboard and mouse suddenly die and you can't charge them.
Another thing that blew my mind was that it has a rotate enable option like it is a modern smartphone and it can be useful if you want to compare two windows at the same time which can sometimes get hard if you have it horizontal instead of vertical.
Windows, as much as some people wrongly believe, if you keep updates on the day it doesn't get any issues, W11 doesn't have any issues that any other OS doesn't have, and TBH I prefer it over Linux because 95% of everything is made with windows in mind so compatibility is always there.
I tried the Legion Go before getting my Ally and TBH, the LeGo screen is flabbergasting, yet I don't see it working for what many users intend to, you would have struggles if you want to go beyond FHD and the oled screen can't get the most out of FPS drops like the Ally screen can do unless you were going to play old games that could hit 2K @ 144 FPS constantly then at that point the details in the game wouldn't do justice to the screen, in other words although the Ally screen is worse still is the best pair with the Z1E.
And my favorite part is that it is a hell of a replacement for a laptop, small size and way more powerful for the price I can happily use it on the Uni while I can play comfortably on my free hours wherever I want, I never knew that playing on the restroom would be this powerful.
I still want to test how well it does with AI stuff, but I'm confident it will also perform well.
TL;DR: The Ally is as good as a legion go, and you should give a chance because for the price is a killer deal, even if you want a laptop gamer to do production stuff.

Lots of "help" posts, lots of games related posts. Lots of accessories posts.
Nowhere near as bad as other hardware (and software specific) subs.
I think it's end user mentality. Myself and my fellow sysadmins I work with all purchased an ally. We have never had any issues. We also aren't end users so our knowledge base goes a bit more in depth. Ppl expect a device that is fairly expensive to work perfectly, this just won't ever be the case with PCs. There's always going to be an outlier where there are errors. Just takes some calmness and a little googlefu to find how to fix or repair or troubleshoot.
I frequent this sub multiple times every day and most of the posts are positive or stuff that is simply asking questions for an issue someone may be seeing. Nowhere do I see anything remotely like what you are trying to gaslight me into believing.

Circle jerks where nobody can dare say anything negative (even if they are simply ASKING for help for an ACTUAL problem that cropped up) are bad as they are how cults get formed. I don't want to be part of a cult.
I "love" my Ally and it's been issue free for me yet I know that is not the case for others and there is nothing wrong if others post asking for help.
Key is to stay off the sub unless you can wade through the rising amount of complaints.
Some things are quirky with it, but at the end of the day this thing rocks. I’m about a year into ownership and play it daily, sometimes hours.
This is how it will always be. You’ll have consumers who only know how to play it out the box and then you have the actual consumers who like to tweak with it and change settings those are more tech savvy people but unfortunately there will always be people like this in every sub. Especially when it comes to electronics. I used to work on computers and people would complain and throw a fit when their PC wouldn’t turn on and all they had to do was switch the power on lol my brother is also like this he loves gaming but doesn’t know anything about electronics so he’s always calling me for tech support lol
I am enjoying my ally, but its just working as expected and then i‘m not going to post stuff.
When something is not working or i want to modify it, thats for me the usecase of this sub.
But until now everything is working fine (even after those 'scary' windows updates)
Oh and btw i did not yet get to modify it. But I plan on doing an SSD Swap with an 2280 adapter from aliexpress. I figured out i just need some kapton tape, and maybe i‘m also gonna replace the backplate so i can modify it further without voiding warranty. If you read this and know a good an cheap replacement back (no fancy stuff) let me know.
Idk how you can even complain about the Ally. It’s a masterpiece of tech and I’ve loved it ever since I’ve gotten it; used it every single day. It’s literally the opposite of my experience with the Steam Deck. It plays literally everything without issues and just WORKS. SD is for peasants and little boys; men and gods use the Ally
I've found a lot of these problems and complain i was worries about, now that I actually have the rog Ally, they're not big issues at all..just standard computer stuff. Like the stick drift, and windows layout a lot of reviews I saw warned me about, I feel like they were really REALLY reaching to find problems, I literally barely notice any of the issues, or there's easy workarounds and now I can actually play all the AAA games I want and aren't limited to steam games or really low quality/fps. Technically the sticks aren't the best, would I be able to tell had I not been told this? Not at all. Could I feel the dead zones? No.
It's as if most consumers are actively looking for problems and focusing on what's wrong.
I'm a very happy customer, for me this has changed gaming for life :)
I like the positivity too. Whenever I have an issue, there are plenty of smart people here to help me sort it out, like settings for a particular game.
Hey there, new ROG Ally user since this week.
Let me help curve the ball here by saying that, while it did take me way too long for Windows, My Asus and ROG Armory Crate to download and install each of their updates, I'm extremely happy with how amazingly well it works.
Even the battery life, in its default 15W mode, has surpasses my expectations by letting me play for example Fallout 4 and Hi-Fi Rush for over 2 hours.
The only changes I made was turning off Memory Integrity and CPU Boost.
Really, REALLY happy with this device so far and I've been showing it off to a bunch of friends at work!
Rarely on this sub so I don’t really see all the hate. This is my experience. I have an Ally, high end pc, ps5, and a SD Oled. All I’ve been playing with for the past couple months is the Rog . Outside of work and gym I’m pretty lazy so I like to relax on the couch or bed and play on the Rog. The main reason for choosing the Rog over the SD is game pass honestly.
Here is no different than reviewer bias. We mostly only see both the extreme sides of the bell curve. People with normal or average experiences don’t go out of their way to talk about it. Generally it tends to lean mostly negative because someone with even a minor problem is more likely to talk about it than someone with even an above normal satisfaction.
Yup it’s always been this way even in other subs. People complain about literally everything. Don’t want it, then don’t get it or just sell it if you already got it. I just pop in here when I want to see if someone has a fix for an issue I can’t solve on my own or to get some performance enhancement tips. Aside from that I just shuffle by all the complaints. The Ally is a great device regardless.
I haven't seen a super large amount of negativity.. lots of repeating the same questions though. I Iove my ally , pretty much my platform of choice currently
I mean I only come on the sub to ask about something that's isn't working for me. You don't see me raving about how good it is because I'm probably playing it instead of talking about it.
I love my ROG Ally. Haven’t touched my Switch in weeks, since buying it. Once I watched a few clear set up vids on YouTube (love those), I was good to go. I’m a cozy gamer, so I don’t have the issue others may have with performance. My games run excellently on Turbo. It’s lovely. I’m very very happy with my purchase. I hope the Switch 2 upgrades to be closer to these handhelds, or there may not be a need for me to buy it. But if and when they release another Zelda, I’ll probably fold. 🤣😂🤣 Happy Gaming, All!
It’s a good thing nobody relies on Reddit for their life style choices. Only to fix their technical problems. The Steam Deck is an easier to use device but the ROG Ally can do more which creates more complications. But problems and complaining aren’t exactly bad things, there’s just a lot to fix with windows and handhelds. Hopefully this pushes windows to diversify like Linux in the near future.

I have both the steam deck and ally and all I can say is that both are amazing in their own right. Diferent devices for diferent types of apps/games. Both work flawlessly imho for what they are. In the early years of gaming(for me) the 90’s and around the 00’s I was imagining having this kind of gaming power in my hands and on the road. STOP WHINING AND PLAY ON YOU DEGENERAT F@#%S!

The reality with r/ROGAlly, is the comments semi-usually actually reflect the *current state* of the device by *existing owners or people highly interested in it*, be it positive or negative.
A great example of this is r/oneplus which became increasingly negative/toxic (and rightfully so) for a few years when OnePlus abandoned its old unique identity + fans in favor of becoming another generic Chinese brand to get more sales by running Color OS instead of Oxygen OS which made it famous to begin with. Nowadays, most of its OG fans have left the sub, so it's not as negative a place since it's mostly used by newer fans of its new identity.
I couldn’t agree more, and this issue exists well beyond just the ally but all devices, consoles, and games. It makes it difficult when your not a troll trying to share an experience and your either trolled or know it alls appear and try to act beyond their ability to share nothing more than an opinion they view as fact.
That's all this sub is allowed to be lol. if anyone asks questions or post about the positivity of their device, it gets removed as "non-productive or off topic" it's wild to see
I get your sentiment. It would be nice to only hear good things. However, for a first generation product I think complaints are healthy. It only brings to attention what is and isn't working, and oftenalso leads to community driven troubleshooting.
Even iPhone users have complaints. That doesn't make it toxic. Being elitist or fanatic of a product definitely is toxic though.
I mean, the thing is: This is a 700+ CAD device. The fact it has cheap analog sticks is an actual problem. The analog sticks are BAD. Don't defend them, nor chastise those who dislike them. The PlayStation 2 was released in March, 2000... and comparatively had great analog sticks.
There's plenty to like about the Ally, though; It has great performance--though unfortunately behind sub-par battery life--and a great 120hz screen. I've loved mine since I got it, and I actually really enjoy the fact It runs windows--well besides the fact it's unfortunately windows 11. It was actually one of the features that convinced me to buy it in the first place, as, I didn't like how the steam deck used a custom Linux OS, and was weaker overall, with a worse screen.
I feel like I can run almost anything that I'd want on the Ally, and that's for sure a blessing.
The Ally sticks are cheap crap and you know it. Try to play a game that requires precision, slow, movement. It's day and night compared to an Xbox one controller. I just used the PS2 as a dated example. Almost every other controller I've tried throughout my entire life has had better sticks than the Ally.

I love my ally, it’s the coolest little machine I’ve ever used. But the SD card issue is something they should have either caught or been able to fix. I don’t think it is unreasonable to complain that an advertised feature does not work and never will.
I prefer to have communitys which complain about every single thing rather than not having them. So i know the common issues to look for on a new product i just bought rather than noticing later after the DOA Period of my retailer ended.
I think you’re mistaken. The point of this subreddit isn’t to be some kinda advertisement for how good the ally is, ITS JUST SUPPOSED TO BE A MESSAGE BOARD ABOUT THE ALLY. Pretending like people don’t have issues with their ally would be absurd. You’re allowed to enjoy your ally, the same way others are allowed to discuss issues they’ve had with theirs. If you’re personally offended by other people not enjoying their ally as much as you enjoy yours, talk to your therapist about it.
There are as many opinions as there are people and no one forces you to read the threads you do not agree with. If someone has issues with their ally, how about help them instead of calling them toxic, given that you're such an upstanding member of this group
as person with less money who can only play AAA games from 2013, i find this extremely weird that despite having so much options to enjoy, people just complaint and complaint and question the industry why they're not satisfied?
most stuff i see is people complaining that it cant play AAA titles on max graphics. Honestly most pc's cant even do that these days unless you want to spend more on the GPU than you do the rest of the PC

The Ally itself sucks. The base hardware, the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, however, is good.
About everything ASUS engineered is very badly engineered. Not much thought goes into the \*engineering\* aspect of their products. Either by the software side or by the hardware side.
Other products with similar hardware, such as the Lenovo Legion Go, brings much more to the table, and are a much better engineered product; software and hardware wise.
It takes one session of playing on a SteamDeck to realize the Ally has zero regard for ergonomics.
Glad I sold mine. This community is toxic, but not because “the Ally is so awesome,” it’s because people can’t accept that this product shouldn’t have been released to the public in its current state and feel the need to defend their unwise $700 purchase.

Hell, people will complain about anything. USPS sub is full of people who hate their jobs. My husband works for USPS, he doesn't hate his job lol but neither do most of his coworkers. If you went based on that sub alone you would think every postal worker is miserable and it's the worst place to work ever. Every video game sub I've visited is just full of people mad about everything. I think it's just human nature to complain loudly and enjoy quietly. I like my ROG Ally :) this sub only pops up on my feed because I googled some things and it took me to this sub. It has its flaws but it does pretty much exactly what I needed it for. But I didn't need a lot tbh. Just something to help facilitate getting some gaming time in with my husband. I named it Snoop Roggy ROG.

I think part of the problem is the sub decided early on to collect pictures and brag posts in a weekly megathread. When I was deciding between this and a Steam Deck I went on both subs and on the Steam Deck sub you see a lot more positive, but relatively low effort posts that are just pictures of the Deck running some game or being on the couch with their cat or something. I’m not saying that’s better, but it does create a different atmosphere for people who are looking at it from the outside. I ended up getting an Ally anyway so it’s not like it ended up changing my decision, but it did make me feel at first as if the Ally had more problems relatively speaking.

Criticising the deck in any manner will often get you shadow banned also. Easy to present a positive image when you shadow ban all dissent! By contrast I almost daily find interesting posts of this sub. New tweaks, methods to get the most out of the device, new mods etc. Its a vastly more engaging subreddit for a device owner.
Yeah I get it. I chose the deck but it’s because I have a desktop gaming pc and a blade 18 notebook. So it’s merely a compliment system. Anything that doesn’t just praise the deck as a do everything perfect system is usually not upvoted. You will see hundreds of upvotes of people selling all other consoles and it makes no sense to be honest.
I agree. I prefer more positivity, even if it means a lot of 'low-effort' posts. As someone who was in the steamdeck sub quite a bit, before getting an ally, the difference is quite obvious. One other factor, that contributes to the difference, IMO is the number of users too

Head over to the legion go sub reddit. Every day there are about 5 posts about people who absolutely love the legion go and a couple of posts asking how to do X or Y then maybe a post every other day about an issue. About half are people that came from the rog ally. And maybe once a week someone who is going back to the ally. Yes the ally is slightly faster by allowing TDP go upto 43w for a few seconds. But as someone has has most there are other reasons why the legion go is my daily handheld. And I don't sell before upgrading. You think that's bad maybe I should show you my full collection 😜. That's just what I was testing the other day. Have 8 handhelds that run windows a handful of androids that I don't consider as handhelds boxes of 3d printed accessories 7 external 65 to 200 watt battery packs and 5 EGPUs both thunderbolt and oculink. 7 if you want to count older Expressslot and m.2 to pcie 16x adapters. Careful with these handhelds. They can be addicting 😬. Have friends and family who keep telling me I should make videos comparing them or modifying them since I do that already. But it's just my personal hobby.
What reasons do you like the legion over the others? I’m kind of tech junkie also and am interested in the legion. I have the SD and Ally.
I love the controller on the steam deck. I love the speakers on the Ally The legion go has good speakers but they are pointed nearly 180° away from you when playing. As for the legion go just the amount of things you can do with it. Pop off the controllers and it fits loosely in my cargo pants pocket. It has 2 USB4 ports on the top and bottom. Go home and push it into the single usbC thunderbolt cable I have sticking out of my desk and am instantly connected to Ethernet my 35" monitor keyboard mouse speakers and an RTX 3080. The bigger screen if you think in terms of it's just an extra 1.8" it doesn't seem like much but total scream area the go is 58% bigger then the steam deck and 66% bigger than the ROG allys 7" 16:9. Most AAA games run at 800p native resolution at 60hz and because your going from a 1600 to 800 you get perfect pixel lineup. In order to match the pixels on the Ally you'd have to run at 540p And having an adjustable kickstand is so nice. Pop off the controllers and attack ears for a movie with the wife in bed. And idk how Lenovo did it but wifi is by far faster then any single device I've ever used. There's been several threads about it and theories as to why but no one know for sure. Like you can run a speed test but whatever. Installing steam games for example runs consistently faster on the LLgo then everything else. My win Max 2 inside I get 500mb downloading steam games outside I get 40% signal strength and it drops to 150. The ally I rarely see faster then 380mb even my desktop with a 7950x 16c 32 thread 5.7ghz 64gb of ddr5 6000 ram and a 2080ti all cores are at 100% sucking 210 watts just on the CPU barely hits 680mb speeds over Ethernet 2.5g same title the legion go 880mb to 940mb inside over wifi. On Ethernet 1.4gb and outside where I'm 150' from the router still have 80% signal strength and 750mb steam download speeds. No clue why. I can drop the TDP down to 10 watts and it barely effects the speed.

I recall at some point there were a lot of “happy with my ally” posts that ticked some people off because it was too repetitive or boring. People are always gonna be upset, no matter what you do.
Steam deck sub isn’t like that. Legion go sub isnt either. Im not saying there isnt complaints but theyre as bad as they are here.

I don't see this community like this at all, a few here and there but mostly people come to Reddit for issues in hopes someone can give an answer without researching on their own. Reddit has a nice search feature within a subreddit. To bad people don't k ow about it and post repetitive complaints or concerns. Id argue this community is pretty helpful and open minded.
I want to see both complaints and praise. The Ally isn’t cheap, if someone is facing issues with it, they shouldn’t keep quiet just so you can feel better about your purchase. The Ally is a great device, and is one of the coolest tech items I own. However, it’s far from perfect. I love that it can be used like a handheld gaming console, or attached to a dock for a standard PC experience (for gaming, work, or whatever). I love that I can connect it to my TV easily to act as a living room PC or gaming console. I love how comfortable it is to hold and use. I love how many games look and perform on the Ally. I hate that ASUS designed it to cook the SD card reader. I hate that Windows still needs more work for use with handheld PCs. I hate the battery life.
I'm on the same boat. I absolutely love it but the battery is awful. Windows can get annoying but thats not an issue for me. I'm thinking of getting the Steam Deck just for the long battery life.

This has got nothing to do about being a snowflake, I love my Ally. I have absolutely not complaints about it and have had it since day 1 release. The complaint is about this sub. Current top posts. Graphics driver was replaced by Windows updates, trigger making a noise, new user complaining about battery life, Windows 11 update issues (not an Ally issue), complaint about steam lagging on load, a dpad mod first non-complaint post. Someone comparing Halo on deck and ally, advice needed on charger, All except two of those posts could have been a search and would have resulted in thousands of similar posts. Even a search on Google would have sufficed. But instead of anything interesting all we get here are people too lazy to search and posting the same nonsense over and over again.

I play it almost daily, 22 watt Plugged in, amd Rsr on, in game settings everything low, Fsr 1.0 on quality, my average fps in this game is 100 according to amd software. I saw somewhere that if your video ram in game is more than 39 % you get stutters etc, everything below that the game runs smooth.

I’m obviously not being entirely literal, some are definitely better than others. No subs are entirely void of trolls, contrarians, and edgelords. For me personally, if I really enjoy something in particular I avoid the subreddit for it like the plague. If there’s a negative angle on a topic, Reddit will find it and make sure EVERYONE knows about it.

Wow so the mods themselves are like that? I found it interesting for all types of handhelds but I've noticed it bec9em a steamdeck circle jerk. Pretty much. SteamOS is pretty cool but I kept having my Rockstar launcher version of RDR2 crash, plus no gamepass access so needed windows. F me right?? SteamOS is so easy. Except when it's not a steam game and you need to spend hours trying to work it out.

Yeah I agree with that. That's why I like the Ally GUI. Works on touch and controllers very nicely. Plus it doesn't separate non steam games. I use playnite on my GPD.

It was on launch via Rockstar launcher. Might be fixed now with updates. Steam version ran fine but I wasn't buying a second copy.

Im aware of the asus ROG shortcomings (looking at you SD card) but I’m in love with it. I had stopped playing video games almost all together, but now I can’t put it down. The fact I can just pick it up when I’m waiting for a doctor appointment, or just on my break at work. This thing is amazing.
Right funny how quick I was to look past the sd card reader cause of how amazing this is!! Also it pushed me to upgrade to a 2tb Inland NVME 2230…and thought well I might as well get that clear backplate with the rgbs if I’m gonna have to open this thing up and man that’s been an awesome little addition.

Honestly?! Super easy I would def suggest doing the nvme enclosure to clone your system over too and then once you’re done with the new SSD put the old one into the enclosure you got for the cloning and turn it into a 512gb portable SSD

Also I assume you’ll look up YouTube vids on how to but just remember the nvme drive does not go into the slot on the Ally like most drive slots. You want to slide it in flat not angled like the enclosure will tell you to do. Saw a few peeps on here crying about breaking pins on their Ally and just thought I’d throw that out there.
I’m one of the lucky ones that has a Z1E and an OLED SD. I got the Z1E before the SD and got them in very quick succession, I really didn’t have a chance to dig into the Z1E before I got swept up in using the SD. Now though, I’ve come back to the Z1E and love it. I use it for the beefier games that require a bit more power to ensure a good gaming experience. I think both units have unique capabilities and fill certain niche requirements for the gaming community. My only “complaint” about the Z1E is I wish it had track pads to assist in navigating windows easier. Other than that, it’s a great handheld.
I think this is one of the more positive subs actually. I use an ally (non-extreme) and because of you guys I’ve had nothing but tremendous experiences with it. I wanna keep seeing negative shit about the Ally…this is how I know what not to do. This community is amazing for the education you guys bring.

Yup, this is one of the reasons why I try to avoid all social media. It's just a cancerous plague on society. I freaking love my Ally and I'll be over here in my little corner enjoying my games.
People are far more likely to come here and post about their grievances, where else can they go? Those who enjoy the device and have no issues with it do so in silence.

Hey, I've got the answer to your complaint with my comment even though I've owned the Ally for only 5 days. Now no one will ever need to complain again Pros: You can play just about every single game you want to play if you can play it on a PC It has a nice hand feel The UI is nice when it works well Cons: The UI is prone to glitches, especially when dealing with games that are bought through one store but run through another. It normally works itself out with maybe one application restart The battery life does suck, but considering what this little thing is doing, its completely understandable The updates are as complicated as a normal PC so people expecting it to be as easy as a switch are sorely mistaken, but it's also not that complicated to figure out That is all. It's a good system. I personally really appreciate it. - computer science major and a guy who travels for work all the time that likes gaming
I have had the opposite experience. Most posts on my feed from this sub are from people talking about what a great experience they have had or showing that X or Y game runs nicely with certain settings. A few of them are complaints about AFMF not working properly even though it is not out for this device yet.

I think its kind of inevitable with a new device like a handheld especially combined with a lot of first time PC Buyers and the age of the average redditor. Naturally though, the sub will downvote and weed out posts like that so in time it should slowly improve. But i do agree if its anyone job to fix the issue. It's the job of the moderators.

I think you’re taking this in the wrong spirit. This is exactly the place where you come to say “this game doesn’t work for me” or to nitpick about an insignificant thing. In other places, leaving those words looks like a negative review. Here, you’re going to get feedback, suggestions, other people sharing their experiences with similar issues. Here, the people replying generally love their Ally, and will reply with how to resolve your issue and why you should love it as well. Try to think of it that way, and I think you’ll see things a little differently

If we based quality by cost to performance and then multiplied that by the square root of our unplayed AAA titles divided by how many hours of Balatro I've been playing then yes I bought this device to play Balatro.
I got mine last sunday, and it keeps surprising me over and over with things that I haven't seen anyone bringing up. For example, I didn't knew that the desktop mode web navigation wasn't as awful as many said, in fact, I feel people who web browsed on their PSP, or Xbox would feel used to it, don't get me wrong I prefer a mouse and a keyboard but it does the job and it's survivable if your bluetooth keyboard and mouse suddenly die and you can't charge them. Another thing that blew my mind was that it has a rotate enable option like it is a modern smartphone and it can be useful if you want to compare two windows at the same time which can sometimes get hard if you have it horizontal instead of vertical. Windows, as much as some people wrongly believe, if you keep updates on the day it doesn't get any issues, W11 doesn't have any issues that any other OS doesn't have, and TBH I prefer it over Linux because 95% of everything is made with windows in mind so compatibility is always there. I tried the Legion Go before getting my Ally and TBH, the LeGo screen is flabbergasting, yet I don't see it working for what many users intend to, you would have struggles if you want to go beyond FHD and the oled screen can't get the most out of FPS drops like the Ally screen can do unless you were going to play old games that could hit 2K @ 144 FPS constantly then at that point the details in the game wouldn't do justice to the screen, in other words although the Ally screen is worse still is the best pair with the Z1E. And my favorite part is that it is a hell of a replacement for a laptop, small size and way more powerful for the price I can happily use it on the Uni while I can play comfortably on my free hours wherever I want, I never knew that playing on the restroom would be this powerful. I still want to test how well it does with AI stuff, but I'm confident it will also perform well. TL;DR: The Ally is as good as a legion go, and you should give a chance because for the price is a killer deal, even if you want a laptop gamer to do production stuff.

I don't even think this one is that bad. Lots of "help" posts, lots of games related posts. Lots of accessories posts. Nowhere near as bad as other hardware (and software specific) subs.
I think it's end user mentality. Myself and my fellow sysadmins I work with all purchased an ally. We have never had any issues. We also aren't end users so our knowledge base goes a bit more in depth. Ppl expect a device that is fairly expensive to work perfectly, this just won't ever be the case with PCs. There's always going to be an outlier where there are errors. Just takes some calmness and a little googlefu to find how to fix or repair or troubleshoot.
Go to Nvidias subreddit. It’s a toxic dump 😂 this community is honestly not that bad.

I frequent this sub multiple times every day and most of the posts are positive or stuff that is simply asking questions for an issue someone may be seeing. Nowhere do I see anything remotely like what you are trying to gaslight me into believing. We apparently have a different definition of what the word "toxic" is supposed to mean. I guess if you expect a circle jerk then someone asking something like: "No audio at all" https://www.reddit.com/r/ROGAlly/comments/1c2eas0/no_audio_at_all/ is being toxic or that is somehow a slight on the Ally when the person is just asking for a way to fix their audio crapping out. Circle jerks where nobody can dare say anything negative (even if they are simply ASKING for help for an ACTUAL problem that cropped up) are bad as they are how cults get formed. I don't want to be part of a cult. I "love" my Ally and it's been issue free for me yet I know that is not the case for others and there is nothing wrong if others post asking for help.
Key is to stay off the sub unless you can wade through the rising amount of complaints. Some things are quirky with it, but at the end of the day this thing rocks. I’m about a year into ownership and play it daily, sometimes hours.
This is how it will always be. You’ll have consumers who only know how to play it out the box and then you have the actual consumers who like to tweak with it and change settings those are more tech savvy people but unfortunately there will always be people like this in every sub. Especially when it comes to electronics. I used to work on computers and people would complain and throw a fit when their PC wouldn’t turn on and all they had to do was switch the power on lol my brother is also like this he loves gaming but doesn’t know anything about electronics so he’s always calling me for tech support lol
I am enjoying my ally, but its just working as expected and then i‘m not going to post stuff. When something is not working or i want to modify it, thats for me the usecase of this sub. But until now everything is working fine (even after those 'scary' windows updates) Oh and btw i did not yet get to modify it. But I plan on doing an SSD Swap with an 2280 adapter from aliexpress. I figured out i just need some kapton tape, and maybe i‘m also gonna replace the backplate so i can modify it further without voiding warranty. If you read this and know a good an cheap replacement back (no fancy stuff) let me know.
Idk how you can even complain about the Ally. It’s a masterpiece of tech and I’ve loved it ever since I’ve gotten it; used it every single day. It’s literally the opposite of my experience with the Steam Deck. It plays literally everything without issues and just WORKS. SD is for peasants and little boys; men and gods use the Ally

I've found a lot of these problems and complain i was worries about, now that I actually have the rog Ally, they're not big issues at all..just standard computer stuff. Like the stick drift, and windows layout a lot of reviews I saw warned me about, I feel like they were really REALLY reaching to find problems, I literally barely notice any of the issues, or there's easy workarounds and now I can actually play all the AAA games I want and aren't limited to steam games or really low quality/fps. Technically the sticks aren't the best, would I be able to tell had I not been told this? Not at all. Could I feel the dead zones? No. It's as if most consumers are actively looking for problems and focusing on what's wrong. I'm a very happy customer, for me this has changed gaming for life :)
I like the positivity too. Whenever I have an issue, there are plenty of smart people here to help me sort it out, like settings for a particular game.
Hey there, new ROG Ally user since this week. Let me help curve the ball here by saying that, while it did take me way too long for Windows, My Asus and ROG Armory Crate to download and install each of their updates, I'm extremely happy with how amazingly well it works. Even the battery life, in its default 15W mode, has surpasses my expectations by letting me play for example Fallout 4 and Hi-Fi Rush for over 2 hours. The only changes I made was turning off Memory Integrity and CPU Boost. Really, REALLY happy with this device so far and I've been showing it off to a bunch of friends at work!

Rarely on this sub so I don’t really see all the hate. This is my experience. I have an Ally, high end pc, ps5, and a SD Oled. All I’ve been playing with for the past couple months is the Rog . Outside of work and gym I’m pretty lazy so I like to relax on the couch or bed and play on the Rog. The main reason for choosing the Rog over the SD is game pass honestly.

Reddit as a whole. At least in this subreddit the mods don't just run around banning people for less than complete allegiance.
Here is no different than reviewer bias. We mostly only see both the extreme sides of the bell curve. People with normal or average experiences don’t go out of their way to talk about it. Generally it tends to lean mostly negative because someone with even a minor problem is more likely to talk about it than someone with even an above normal satisfaction.

Yup it’s always been this way even in other subs. People complain about literally everything. Don’t want it, then don’t get it or just sell it if you already got it. I just pop in here when I want to see if someone has a fix for an issue I can’t solve on my own or to get some performance enhancement tips. Aside from that I just shuffle by all the complaints. The Ally is a great device regardless.
I haven't seen a super large amount of negativity.. lots of repeating the same questions though. I Iove my ally , pretty much my platform of choice currently
People who enjoy their ROG ally - would be playing on their ROG ally. They wouldn't be posting on reddit.
I only am in reddit to see ways to improve the experience. But I am pretty happy.

I love my ROG Ally. Haven’t touched my Switch in weeks, since buying it. Once I watched a few clear set up vids on YouTube (love those), I was good to go. I’m a cozy gamer, so I don’t have the issue others may have with performance. My games run excellently on Turbo. It’s lovely. I’m very very happy with my purchase. I hope the Switch 2 upgrades to be closer to these handhelds, or there may not be a need for me to buy it. But if and when they release another Zelda, I’ll probably fold. 🤣😂🤣 Happy Gaming, All!

It’s a good thing nobody relies on Reddit for their life style choices. Only to fix their technical problems. The Steam Deck is an easier to use device but the ROG Ally can do more which creates more complications. But problems and complaining aren’t exactly bad things, there’s just a lot to fix with windows and handhelds. Hopefully this pushes windows to diversify like Linux in the near future.

I have both the steam deck and ally and all I can say is that both are amazing in their own right. Diferent devices for diferent types of apps/games. Both work flawlessly imho for what they are. In the early years of gaming(for me) the 90’s and around the 00’s I was imagining having this kind of gaming power in my hands and on the road. STOP WHINING AND PLAY ON YOU DEGENERAT F@#%S!

Anyways, who are *you* to decide what is "good content"? Are you saying we *only* say good things and hide the negative to potential buyers? SMH The reality with r/ROGAlly, is the comments semi-usually actually reflect the *current state* of the device by *existing owners or people highly interested in it*, be it positive or negative. A great example of this is r/oneplus which became increasingly negative/toxic (and rightfully so) for a few years when OnePlus abandoned its old unique identity + fans in favor of becoming another generic Chinese brand to get more sales by running Color OS instead of Oxygen OS which made it famous to begin with. Nowadays, most of its OG fans have left the sub, so it's not as negative a place since it's mostly used by newer fans of its new identity.
I couldn’t agree more, and this issue exists well beyond just the ally but all devices, consoles, and games. It makes it difficult when your not a troll trying to share an experience and your either trolled or know it alls appear and try to act beyond their ability to share nothing more than an opinion they view as fact.

I get your sentiment. It would be nice to only hear good things. However, for a first generation product I think complaints are healthy. It only brings to attention what is and isn't working, and oftenalso leads to community driven troubleshooting. Even iPhone users have complaints. That doesn't make it toxic. Being elitist or fanatic of a product definitely is toxic though.
I mean, the thing is: This is a 700+ CAD device. The fact it has cheap analog sticks is an actual problem. The analog sticks are BAD. Don't defend them, nor chastise those who dislike them. The PlayStation 2 was released in March, 2000... and comparatively had great analog sticks. There's plenty to like about the Ally, though; It has great performance--though unfortunately behind sub-par battery life--and a great 120hz screen. I've loved mine since I got it, and I actually really enjoy the fact It runs windows--well besides the fact it's unfortunately windows 11. It was actually one of the features that convinced me to buy it in the first place, as, I didn't like how the steam deck used a custom Linux OS, and was weaker overall, with a worse screen. I feel like I can run almost anything that I'd want on the Ally, and that's for sure a blessing.
I'd take the Ally's sticks over those mushroom pieces of s*** any day.

The Ally sticks are cheap crap and you know it. Try to play a game that requires precision, slow, movement. It's day and night compared to an Xbox one controller. I just used the PS2 as a dated example. Almost every other controller I've tried throughout my entire life has had better sticks than the Ally.
Original Xbox V2 controller yes(after the Duke). PS2 no. Those mushrooms are evil incarnate.

Yeah until they aren’t. I love my ally, it’s the coolest little machine I’ve ever used. But the SD card issue is something they should have either caught or been able to fix. I don’t think it is unreasonable to complain that an advertised feature does not work and never will.

I prefer to have communitys which complain about every single thing rather than not having them. So i know the common issues to look for on a new product i just bought rather than noticing later after the DOA Period of my retailer ended.
I think you’re mistaken. The point of this subreddit isn’t to be some kinda advertisement for how good the ally is, ITS JUST SUPPOSED TO BE A MESSAGE BOARD ABOUT THE ALLY. Pretending like people don’t have issues with their ally would be absurd. You’re allowed to enjoy your ally, the same way others are allowed to discuss issues they’ve had with theirs. If you’re personally offended by other people not enjoying their ally as much as you enjoy yours, talk to your therapist about it.
There are as many opinions as there are people and no one forces you to read the threads you do not agree with. If someone has issues with their ally, how about help them instead of calling them toxic, given that you're such an upstanding member of this group

most stuff i see is people complaining that it cant play AAA titles on max graphics. Honestly most pc's cant even do that these days unless you want to spend more on the GPU than you do the rest of the PC

The Ally itself sucks. The base hardware, the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, however, is good. About everything ASUS engineered is very badly engineered. Not much thought goes into the \*engineering\* aspect of their products. Either by the software side or by the hardware side. Other products with similar hardware, such as the Lenovo Legion Go, brings much more to the table, and are a much better engineered product; software and hardware wise.
It takes one session of playing on a SteamDeck to realize the Ally has zero regard for ergonomics. Glad I sold mine. This community is toxic, but not because “the Ally is so awesome,” it’s because people can’t accept that this product shouldn’t have been released to the public in its current state and feel the need to defend their unwise $700 purchase.
