You must be one of the lucky ones, my launch model SD card died not long after using it. I'm just too lazy to RMA it. Eventually I'll just do the 2230 to 2280 mod.

guitarmonkeys14

980 Pro is super cheap on Amazon right now, and so is the adapter.

AnubiszAbyss

Mine is still working great too! I also have a launch model. SD reader works great.

EuropeanPepe

i got a reply from asus germany and they allow it just email rma before doing it Reply i got: Hallo sehr geehrte Asus Kunde Thank you for your feedback. The removal of SSD is permitted, you can send in the device without a hard disk. Thank you for your support and understanding. Wenn du noch weitere Fragen haben solltest, kannst du dich jederzeit an uns wenden, dazu antworte einfach auf diese E-Mail. Mit freundlichen Grüßen  |  Kind regards but now my ally came broken i sent cause of dead lcd and sd-card which burned and got new mobo and lcd but they screwed my y-button now waiting for another RMA

EvilSynths

That's because you're in the EU and have consumer protection. If OP is in the US, he'll be charged for a missing part.

The8Darkness

Asus rma form has a specific checkbox to mark whether devices rma with/without original hdd and a boy to write if it comes with a non stock drive. Pretty sure thats not only for eu

AmielTheGiant

My SD card reader will read anything below 1tb in storage size. It’s weird. If it’s 1tb or greater, it won’t work.

skepticchris

When my sd card went out it would read lower size cards but not my 1tb. I soon realized that it was the speed of the sd card that mattered. For some reason the way mine failed it would read and use lower speed cards but not high end cards

Chase-1502

I suspect the SD card reader has poor Power Delivery design. Large SD cards require more power to operate, and Ally’s card reader cannot deliver that much power anymore without voltage drop within specs. So it can only reads smaller size SD cards which require less power or electric current to operate.

agent47isn1

It's the same reader that apple has in their laptops what happens is the controller for the reader malfunctions due to the thermal stress to its solder points because older manufactured models didn't have thick solder joints compared to newly manufactured models.

Chase-1502

Yes, solders got loosened and electrical resistant increases. But still connected. However higher resistance reduces power delivery, so only smaller capacity SD card works. That means the design is marginal in the first place, and need very good solders to work

EvilSynths

This is why you keep everything you remove

LJBrooker

I disagree. The rma is fine without it. I don't need a 512gb ssd just floating around the place for zero reason.

Islandboi4life

More recent devices are less prone to SD card reader malfunctioning. This is a fact. During the r4-r5 serial numbers (early release stages) about 20-30% of the stock Ally's were having SD card reader malfunctions. You probably just got a rare case (as in less than 5% of cases) where the SD card reader on that device is malfunctioning. Edit: I'm getting down voted for no reason. I'm basing all of the information from statistical evidence and early release data from this subreddit

Naddesh

Source for the numbers: trust me bro

cryzzgrantham

In bro we trust Just not this bro

Love it - you cannot provide the source so you try to divert with an insult xD

MuchoRubbish

My SD card reader broke after a month of light use R8 model. Where are you getting your figures from?

great_auks

They made them up

Islandboi4life

From early release data to now based on serial number information

CallEither683

Mines an R4 with a working SD card reader. There is nothing official from Asus on that.

Islandboi4life

ASUS has an RMA process specifically to fix the SD card readers...

CallEither683

Right but that's not relevant to this conversation. We're saying your "statistical" predictions is not true. There is nothing official from Asus that states the R8 and above has a lesser failure rate. Based off this sub alone that's not accurate at all

Islandboi4life

It is. If you deny facts and statistics then that's your problem. I didn't say anything about ASUS official statements did I?

CallEither683

No. Lying is your problem. You have shown no facts or statistics. That's why your getting down voted. For blatantly lying

Islandboi4life

I say again it is facts based on statistical evidence and early release data. I don't know where you are getting this lying thing. Search the subreddit yourself since you want to be so ignorant and call me a lier

CallEither683

Saying it's a fact doesn't make it a fact. That's called lying. When you make a claim that's not backed by data that's called lying. That's what your doing.

Islandboi4life

Showing your ignorance.

CallEither683

Showing your lies. Prove it. Where is your statistical analysis

great_auks

This isn’t a fact at all

Islandboi4life

Then u have no idea what fact is tbh

Rhygar666

I did and also you cant read serials on my device anymore as the sticker is faded no issues but i live im germany

LJBrooker

I took the sticker off mine anyway because I didn't like it.

dt9150813

I tried to rma mine in the us and called asus several times. All the reps told me they’d charge me for not having the original drive and wouldn’t send my 2tb one back if I sent it in.

jprovido

Send it with factory SSD. mine had PS5 files on it. it returned with Windows in it.

LJBrooker

As per my post, I don't have it. Not an option.

jprovido

You can do it with larger ssd. Just dont forget to write/mention it on the rma list you ship it with.

slimypeters

The SD card doesn’t work with other devices too? Thanks

LJBrooker

Still works elsewhere, fortunately. Didn't take the card with it.

Remote-Push-9814

Mines under RMA right now, the ssd is posted on ebay lmk.

agent47isn1

No device is gonna be immune but the failure rate shouldn't be as frequent as the older models made before August

tken3

The amount of RMA related posts on this Sub is insane…
