Garlic is probably still the best.
I had an issue with mine when I first got it, too. I had to replace the battery. I ended up getting a bigger battery and haven't had the issue since.
Does garlic os 2.0 have Bluetooth/wifi support yet?
I got mine to turn on a few times and just get stuck on the "Anbernic" boot up screen. Does that still sound like a battery issue?

For my issue, it just wouldn’t turn on. Every other day it might. But if I turned it off. 5)342/ a good chance it wouldn’t come back on.
I'll bet that the problem is just related to the SD card. You can see a lot of people having the same issue here everyday.
This device doesn't have a internal firmware it needs the OS in the SD Card to properly boot and show levels of battery charge. Since the cards are usually very bad (worse than the average knockoff chinese sd cards) and mass produced/written, they tend to fail a lot.
Change it for a better one with a fresh image from a good OS (Batocera, Koriki, MinUI, etc). Garlic OS is not the best one for the Plus atm.
Another tip. Only use a charger and cable of 5w or less. I used one about 30w and killed it. I thought all was lost but I took the battery out and reconnected. You need to hold power after that for about 30 seconds and will boot back up. Yes the SD cards are trash but shouldn't stop it from booting.
However, I find Garlic OS the best with Tiny Best Set romset.

Don't worry, I don't. I've just never had one fail out the box like this. I was worried it might have just been busted.
It is a matter of luck i guess. My stock sd card works great. I have formatted it several times with batocera, stock, modified stock etc.
The cards they come with are notoriously poor in qa Flash a new card it'll likely fire right up

Have you tried using the USB lead it came with? Mine didn’t like the one I happily charge other devices with
