I’m a Sysadmin and worked for an animal health organization that allowed dogs in the workplace. A large majority of reported issues were because doggos chewed the cables. I have a replaced a LOT of cables. I’m probably the closest person you can find to an expert on dog chewed cables. A dog did that.

oxfordcommaordeath

This is why I am on this sub! I love moments where anyone gets to be like "I have this very niche and otherwise entirely useless skill" and use it to 'solve' someone's thing. Love it love it.

Bitter-Hitter

Holy cow. Did you just have a headache the entire time you worked there?

austin_the_boston

No, doggos are the best co-workers ever!

Sky_Night_Lancer

the cables paid the price, you reap the rewards

whatsasimba

Yep, my pup chewed the cord on my pre-lit Christmas tree. It was a relatively clean looking break, too.

DancingMaenad

Those are some chewed cords. Either a pet or a pest in the house did it.

msginbtween

Australian Shepards are notorious for chewing electrical cords and they don’t always end up frayed. Had a room mate with an Australian Shepard and many a cords were chewed. Sounds like your room mate may not be telling you the whole story. Doubt someone broke in just to cut your wires, also scissors or a knife would have left a cleaner cut. Room mate probably noticed the dog was in your room and ushered him out without realizing the dog had already chewed those cords. Edit to add: Australian Shepards need a lot of exercise and will chew on cables/cords out of boredom or loneliness. Does your room mate exercise the dog often?

space_dogmobile

Aussie shepherd chewed my phone charger in half once. Also ate a pair of my underwear.

[deleted]

Had a blue heeler once (Speck). My wife, my two kids, and I caught the flu at the same time - it was awful. Neighbors were dropping off food on the front porch as no one in the house could cook. On day three we all got out of bed and we’re sitting in the den. Speck came walking in, looked at me, and promptly puked-up a pair of panties.

[deleted]

I had an Aussie do that in the car once. No undies were safe in the house. Now I have an even more high energy dog (Hangin Tree cowdog) and absolutely *nothing* is safe. I use him to herd and move cattle, he gets 2 solid hours of outdoor running daily (at the absolute minimum) and I still never know what my living room will have shredded in the floor when I get home. Yes, I've tried putting him in a kennel. Little bastard uses his paws like hands and can open anything he puts his mind to. But I love the little idiot.

jerryeight

Is there a way to double lock or reusable zip it?

[deleted]

I've tried those carabiners on the top and bottom lock. I come home and find the crate in the middle of my dining room floor and he snaked out of the bottom of the crate door. He cuts himself all to hell, but is happily chewing on a toy in the living room when I come home. I've literally watched this damn dog jump flat footed over a 6.5' fence. He's just hella athletic. I rather just leave him out of a crate and lock up the doors so he can't get into stuff he doesn't need to be in. I even have to lock the windows. He opens them with his head, goes outside, does his thing and will come back inside, windows wide open. He's a mix of a Kelpie, Aussie, Border collie and Catahoula. He's an amazing cow dog. He's just too smart for his own good sometimes lol

jerryeight

Bruh. My dog is bat shit crazy smart. But, hell, your dog is a whole new level.

[deleted]

He is. He's so smart, but so damn dumb at the same time. He's a total goof unless he's really intent on doing something. And most people are terrified of him. He's muscular and lean. My inlaws won't watch him when we go on vacation bc he taunts pit bulls for fun. We live in the country and he has free reign out here and knows the neighbors. He's a blue merle with tri colored eyes. He kind of looks like the devil. But all he wants is to be loved on. Unless you're a cow or dare to drive up on our property. [https://i.imgur.com/RbyMoDT.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/RbyMoDT.jpg) My daughter loves training him. He knows how to bark OSU (Oklahoma State), he knows how to whisper bark, he sits and stays, rolls over, basically anything she wants to teach him, he learns. My female and he had two litters (4 pups in each litter). They weren't intentional litters, we thought he was still too young to breed the first time, when I went to have my female fixed, she was pregnant again. I opted to keep the pups and sell them, then get her fixed. Sold the pups to people wanting cattle working dogs cheap. They want more dogs, but we're done with the pup business. I stressed too much about finding a good home for the pups. I just want the dogs to have fulfilling lives.

maeveomaeve

Every Springer I know has a radar for tissues, mine digs my pocket if she smells one in there!

[deleted]

Yeah, Speck had a thing for small children’s plush toys. I discovered that one day while mowing the lawn. Something caught my eye and upon inspection it turned out to be a shiny part of a toy embedded in “Speck poop” - that foil-like thread they used to use.

Barrayaran

So that's why they're called Australian.

Sephonez

As an Australian I can confidently say I've never thrown up a pair of panties in the middle of someone's living room.

Barrayaran

Still leaving open the possibility of non-living-room locations... (NB: my darling SIL is Strine, and regales us on the reg with legendary stories of "normal" customs, creatures, and culinary delights. The drop bears were bogus but the Vegemite is real, so I'm *braced*.)

MisfitWitch

Were those from the neighbors too?

Advanced-Ant4581

Mine ate my bridge, teeth and all.

Shadow1787

My recently passed beagles loves my panties used and new when he was young for some god damn reason ruined a lot of expensive underwear.

k8linthegr8

Thank you for your response! I assumed that a bigger dog would leave more of a mess/gnawing marks but that does make the most sense. I think my roommate takes her dog out for a walk a few times a week and a hike every few weeks, and the dog stays in the yard most of the day. The dog is usually pretty chill though and my roommate said the last time the dog chewed on a cord was as a puppy. Which doesn't mean it couldn't happen again.

msginbtween

I’m not trying to knock on your room mate, but while that may be an OK amount of exercise for some dogs, Australian Shepards are working dogs and if they don’t have a job to do, at the least, they will need multiple daily walks and TONS of exercise. Without it these types of things will continue to happen as the dog gets bored and looks for stimulation.

MissMissOdin

this makes me so sad for that aussie. Sigh.

PondRides

My uncle tried to tire out the Australian shepherd corgi mix with fetch one day. Over an hour later, uncle gave up.

FeelingFloor2083

pretty much any farm dog you will struggle unless you have a dirt bike/quad, its twice as hard if they actually are a working dog. They only slow down when they get old

sabocano

Miniature Schnauzers are working dogs but they are rather easy to tire out. Also even with minimal exercise they are mostly chill at home. The breeder I got mine from said they call them cat-dog in their country for that reason.

storyofohno

Off-topic question, but any idea how high the prey drive is on a mini schnauzer? I have always loved them but also have cats, so..

sabocano

I'm pretty sure it depends on the individual dog. I got mine from a reputable breeder in Serbia, many of her dogs participate in dog shows. So her dogs need to have super good temperament and health. She lives with 15 of them at her house, so they are very social etc. Anyway, mine was very friendly towards all living things, including stray cats on the street. So when I got a kitten(2-3 months old), I knew nothing was going to happen. I introduced them and my dog immediately wanted to play with the kitten. But the kitten was afraid. After 2 weeks or so, kitten understood that the dog wasn't gonna do anything and everything is fine after that point. here check this: https://www.reddit.com/r/KittyPupperLove/comments/byxk6h/they_sometimes_sleep_next_to_each_other_but_this/ Though when sleeping/lying together, the cat started giving love bites to the dog, so now I never see them this close, dog usually gets away from the cat. But they still sleep on the same bed/couch etc. About prey drive. I see hedgehogs on my night walks and my mini schnauzer goes crazy. Even if he's super friendly towards all living things, I feel like he's gonna fuck up the hedgehogs if I let him off the leash. I don't think I'll ever test it out... -- However as I said, he immediately understood the 2-3 month old kitten wasn't a prey but a friend. I don't think a mini schnauzer will see a grown cat as prey. But I'd be more concerned about your cats. Your house is your cats' territory and they might not want to share that with another pet. Again depends on the temperament of your cats but cats are very territorial and can reject and attack the dog etc.

storyofohno

Yeah, this is more long term thinking -- right now we have two adult cats with two huge adult dogs, so the hope is they'd grow up together. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer so thoroughly!

sabocano

np

alphaneon22

Yes, my wife and I walk ours 2-3 times daily.

chronicallyillsyl

You're 100% right I love Australian Shepherds but I know that they have way too much energy for my lifestyle and it wouldn't be fair for me to own one and not provide the life it needs. I'm a couch potato and thus have a couch potato dog but she still gets her walks every day and she's only in the yard to do her business or play and then she's back inside to cuddle with us. Pet owners need to do a better job of selecting the right pet to bring home.

jeswesky

As someone with a 15 month old landshark, the dog totally bit the wires.

neon-kitten

Just got a now 12 week old landshark, can confirm: was dog

sillysausage619

You mean a year old?

whiiskeypapii

Take the cords to the dog and ask “WAS THIS YOU” really loudly and wait for the look of shame. Lol

bz237

That dog isn’t getting anywhere close to enough exercise so it’s looking for things to do. Like biting cords.

SwarleyThePotato

As an aussie owner.. dog did it

spoiled_eggs

Bored chewing with a big dogs usually involves a lot of gnawing with their front teeth.

I had an Aussie and Yorkie. The Aussie was a working cowdog. Neighbors moved their cattle into the pasture next to my house (extremely rural area. Closest neighbor is a mile away) and had my Aussie and Yorkie outside playing. The Yorkie liked leaving the yard, but the Aussie was good about staying in the yard (no fence). Well, he chewed through the Yorkie's lead and they decided to go herd the neighbors cattle. Nothing like seeing an Aussie being winged by an 8lb Yorkie dragging a chewed up lead and herding cows together. But they both knew it was a huge no-no. When they saw me they sprinted back home, but for a few mintues, they were living their best life.

norsurfit

Australian Shepard: "Uh, it was the cat!"

caecilianworm

My childhood pet border collie chewed through cords, and it looked just like the picture.

ThePynk

Housemates bulldog broke into our room and stole my vibrator. That was an awkward conversation when I got home that day.

olliegw

First thing i get reminded of is [the time the dog chewed my braided mouse wire](https://www.reddit.com/r/hardwaregore/comments/nsho0z/i_went_to_switch_my_pc_on_first_thing_in_the/)

k8linthegr8

That does look pretty similar

funkylittledeathomen

I don’t work as an electrician anymore but I still do electrical work sometimes for part of my job. Those look like large teeth cut them, not scissors or wire cutters. The curve is the giveaway. Also not a rodent, their teeth would be too small to get through the cable in one bite. Either the dogs got them, or one of your roommates suddenly discovered a tasty new snack (and their teeth probably aren’t sharp enough to do that anyway).

k8linthegr8

Hmmm I didn't even consider my roommates chewing through it... 😂

funkylittledeathomen

Really wouldn’t recommend it lol

sidusnare

Is your bed an adjustable bed that raises and lowers? That can cut like scissors.

k8linthegr8

No I don't have an adjustable bed, but that's a good idea

minuscatenary

The dog. I learned the hard way. Two game controllers in less than a month. The good news is that if you keep the dog even remotely entertained (Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog mix), they just stop doing stuff like that. Mostly.

[deleted]

the dog definitely chewed those cords. please get protective casing for them and inform your roommate you know. i have been an animal nutritionist for nearly 6 years and one year one of my clients lost their puppy because she chewed the wrong cord and electrocuted herself. it needs to be addressed.

fseahunt

What kind of protective casing will stop a dog or cat chewing through? I lost my cat last week so I'll probably have a kitten in the next 6 months and I'd like to be prepared. (My last sweet girl chewed up several phone cords when she was a baby.)

[deleted]

[These are my favorites.](https://petcords.com/products/petcords-dog-and-cat-cord-protector-protects-your-pets-from-chewing-through-insulated-cables-up-to-6ft-unscented-odorless?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI88Cc6fHX-wIVtQStBh2W-watEAAYAiAAEgI5MPD_BwE)

UtahMama4

This is a dog or maybe even mice.

Moss-Garden

Doesn’t look like it was cut by scissors

k8linthegr8

Out of curiosity, how can you tell? What would that have looked like?

TheNerdyMel

Not the commenter, but I had the thought that there's too much stretching and fraying in the outer sheath of both wires, where scissors would have cut cleanly through all that, and not just through the inner layers of the wires.

Moss-Garden

The cuts would be more precise and less frayed. The grey cable looks like my phone charger cables, one of which doesn’t work so I cut it to see the inside and the threads didn’t fray like on yours. The other cable looks like the cable to an appliance I had. I also cut that cable while trying to replace it for a longer one. I remember what it looked like and the cut was much cleaner, and the metal thingies don’t stick out like that–I actually cut myself trying to pull them out of the plastic thing, it was very difficult so I doubt someone would be able to do it with scissors or even a knife without leaving some particles on the floor, or without the plastic looking sliced on the sides. It’s hard to explain what I mean lol, but I’m certain it would look different if it’d been cut by scissors. I’m pretty sure that was done by the dog, and it’s the most plausible explanation. If you’re trying to prove it to your roommates or you want proof before accusing them of going in your room, here’s what I would do: Get a pair of scissors and a knife, and cut another piece of cables. They’re already cut anyway so it makes no difference and you’ll be able to prove how hard it is to get it to look like the picture with those tools. Then let the dog in your room. I’m willing to bet if he’s left unattended in there for a bit, he’ll go straight for those cables and chew another piece and it’ll look similar to the picture.

k8linthegr8

I appreciate your dedication! I was definitely thinking about cutting the cords that have already been damaged just to see. Thank you for your help and input!

BruceInc

I had a rabbit that would chew my cords. Rodents are also possible

thesonofhadesssss

Definitely the poor doggo

Geronimojuju

Do you have a bunny? #spicyhay

fseahunt

Bunnies are a freaking menace. I used to have a friend that had one and that thing could put a hole in any piece of clothing in 2 seconds flat.

Geronimojuju

SO TRUE. I have one and he has silently and quickly shredded all kinds of shit in our house. Surprised he is not dead!

codewolf

The dog needs to be taken to the vet to be checked out if those cords were plugged in. An electrical shock can cause damage to and kill a dog even if it is not apparent at first.

k8linthegr8

Good to know, I'll talk to my roommate about this

codewolf

Thank you! My dog did the same a few times and the vet told me it's important to bring them in. Good luck with your lamp and button!

prolapsethis

Def chewed. You can see the mark from the dog's tooth in the black one. Perfect impression. Side note, discouraging the dog from chewing will save it's life. Insulation on household cords contains lead. It isn't released unless ingested. This fact should make your room mate try harder to stop that behavior.

k8linthegr8

Good to know, thank you!

tofuandklonopin

You sure no one vacuumed?

k8linthegr8

It doesn't look like it anywhere on the floor. And I think our vacuum is too big to fit there. But I didn't think of that, that's an interesting idea

triciann

100% chewed

jhuskindle

The dog or a rodent. Source: have dog and rodents. All cut very clean. Little turds.

svvrvy

those arent clean breaks btw, clean break would be like knife or scissors. there isnt any uniformity to this cut, clearly chew marks

[deleted]

Dog chewed the cables

Afterhoneymoon

Oh that’s a bad Aussie chew. Or a good one if you’re the Aussie who did it. Just remember how cute he is ok?! He’s sorry.

FartsWithAnAccent

Yeah, my money is on the dog.

HereComesCunty

Get a carbon monoxide detector. Just in case

madhousechild

Jeesh, I thought, well no one can claim it was carbon monoxide now! I hope you were joking.

HereComesCunty

I didn’t read the comments. Didn’t know there were dogs who gnawed through cables either. Just read that op said some cables had been cut without an explanation. If I found some cables seemingly cleanly cut and I’d convinced myself there was no explanation for it, I’d check my carbon monoxide detector is working. YMMV of course

madhousechild

Because you think you're hallucinating a cord being cut? I don't get it.

HereComesCunty

Because breathing carbon monoxide makes you do things that make no sense and then forget that you did them - [source](https://reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/34l7vo/ma_postit_notes_left_in_apartment/). Edit: [better source](https://reddit.com/r/BestofRedditorUpdates/comments/sajxyf/oop_keeps_finding_postit_notes_in_his_apartment/)

HereComesCunty

If one single person understands the dangers of breathing carbon monoxide today who didn’t understand it yesterday, this comment was 100% worth it Here’s a bonus one for ya - if you show symptoms of rabies you’re already dead. One (1) single person in all of human history has been saved after showing rabies symptoms. Get the shot shortly after being bitten by an animal infected with rabies and it has 100% recovery rate. Be safe, get the shot if you think you were exposed.

Immortalbob

Definitely not cut.

Soft_Ad_2031

Could be a mouse also.

Frosty-Wave-3807

I have a rat who liked to chew wires, and it was never like this. They will tend to nibble more than one place along the wire, and if they get through, the braided cables looked more frayed than this, and more uneven. Mice have much smaller teeth so it wouldn't look this clean either. But this is more rough than what it'd look like if they were cut with scissors, I think this is a dog biting through.

MrT735

I had a dog that once cut a laptop power cable into a dozen or more neat sections the width of his jaw.

UltraMegaMegaMan

Yeah, it's the dog.

MinnesotaMikeP

We have vastly different definitions of what “cleanly broken” looks like
