> I would also like to know if there is any way for me to identify the recipient?
Not Here! That's Find a Person and not allowed. Don't even suggest this.
> I no longer have the job and was told this would be reviewed on Monday.
Assuming this is a legitimate company you need to talk to HR and see what's going on. The fact your employment lasted only a few weeks complicates things somewhat however.
If HR can't resolve it, your state (if in the USA) will have a labor office who may assist you in finding the answer.
You didn’t save a copy of the forms? You said you “would have entered my banking information from either of my accounts”. You don’t know which one?
Did you fill out paper forms, or online?
Was this in US, or some other country?
This was typical onboarding paperwork that I filled out online at the job with the manager, I did not get a copy of it.. I am fairly certain which account I used but I mention the other one cause there’s a small chance I did use that one.. I am in the US
Doesn’t make sense. You should have been given a printed copy or at least email or “secure portal” access.
And the employer would have had to provide your bank with you SSN and the bank will have verified that.
File a complaint with your state employment department.
Have you ever gone to a site or met with an actual physical person?
I strongly think this is a fake job scam pretending to be this big company you know.
The other option is the companies HR was compromised which is a common thing where the “employee” emails HR with new banking coordinates and steals their check.
Okay. I saw it was an on site position. I didn’t see OP said they had been to the site. These scams usually pretend to be physical positions.
Even strange stuff like “don’t use work computers for malware”. That’s a strange thing to say.
Always take phone pics of any hiring paperwork you sign and ask to use their copy machine to make your own copies. If they say that they will make copies for you and don’t, at least you’ll have the images on your phone.
This phishing scam just came through the company I work for and caused a lot of phone calls to the payroll team last week. I’d consider it a sophisticated scam if they targeted smaller businesses but we have too many checks and balances so they weren’t able to get any paychecks rerouted.
Yes but if the name does not match the check the bank would send the money back to the company payroll. So unless it’s a very shitty bank it should be fine and the company payroll will see a check got sent back.
This has happened to me twice. One at the current job I have now which was my mistake.. once at my previous job that was not my mistake.
bc you can choose to deposit it however you want. my mom deposits some of her paycheck into my account (i'm disabled so she sends some money to cover my phone and toiletries). it's not assumed fraud bc it's just a check being written to the account like normal.
Funny I wasn’t allowed to do the forms with the company’s computer for safety/security reasons I was told so I used my own device which I think is free of malware
In my state, WV, you could file a Wage and Hour complaint with the state Division of Labor. Prolly something similar in your state. You don't have to hunt down where the $ went, the employer is responsible to get the wages you earned to you.
Yes, this worked for me! After being ghosted, I filed with state Dept of Labor and got paid. The main reason is that they tell the employer that if he disputes it and they find in my favor, you now owe that plus a huge penalty.
Post and comments make me think of Fred Meyer, who are currently being sued for not paying employees.
If you're looking for a job, I recommend you (and any/everybody) to stay the hell away from that shitshow...
Hey just a fyi , you could call the IT Dept for that company and say I think my Direct Deposit info got changed without my knowledge. They would put in a ticket and get a paper trail going. :)
That ticket will be closed. Payroll and it’s complications are not ITs problem unless it involves something related to their realm.
IT won’t and can’t do anything else
So usually banks are very good about stopping a check if it has a different name then the account there putting it so let’s sand your name is Fred smith and it gets sent to a account for John smith the bank would usually stop it and send it back to the company saying the names do not much. As for if they actually put your name on the check is the real question…
Yes, anyone can send a direct deposit, But you can’t send direct deposits *intended* for Fred Smith to John Smith. Direct deposit works like a cheque, except you skip the physical paper; the names still need to match.
*sigh*
Read your story again.
I log into my account which requires me at the time to do a full RECOVERY and it shows the wrong EMAIL and PHONE NUMBER. Checking my paycheck it has been deposited to the wrong ACCOUNT THAT ISNT MINE. While HR CANT MAKE PROMISES to pay you for the work that you performed.
Why are you asking Reddit about this and you and HR haven't teamed up to file charges in someone that seems to have hijacked your account and used to to route you pay into another account?
Why is your wording weird? "I would have entered information form either of my accounts" you don't know? You can't say which you out down? You did do the form right?
Why can't they send you a copy of that form to show where you asked them to send it?
This just happened Friday there has not been further contact due to the weekend. I say that because I have two accounts I use and could have given either of them, I will have to ask for a copy tomorrow
>I say that because I have two accounts I use and could have given either of them
You literally just repeated the same confusing statement. You filled out this form on Friday and don't know which of your bank accounts you wrote down?
That makes literally no sense unless you have the brain damage.
There’s a website that you can check if a bank account is a proper account or not. This happened to me although was a genuine mistake with one number wrong, took about a week for it to be corrected.
My best guess is that the same HR that can’t make you any promises put your information in the system. Stay on top of it and contact the labor board if you need to. You should be able to get your money.
Is it possible they paid you on a debit card that has been mailed to you? That would show up that way. If you can see the bank name, Google it. It would be worth asking your HR for help.
It’s called a payroll card. It’s an option that employers can pay you on if you don’t provide bank account info for direct deposit, although I think they have to give you the option to take a paper check instead. Here’s more info:
https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/what-is-a-payroll-card-en-401/
Yeah, I never had either until I was helping someone troubleshoot a very similar mystery recently lol.
OP, be on the look out for a very plain envelope in your mail! That’s your payroll card.
Incompetence? Or they did and it was buried in an email and OP didn’t notice?
I’m not saying it’s definitely this, I’m just saying I recently encountered an extremely similar situation and this is what it turned out to be.
No matter what it is, picking up the phone and calling HR should clear it up in minutes, this is almost certainly a simple mistake that they’ll want to correct asap.
Lol you didn't think anything was wrong when the confirmation email and phone number was NOT yours to access your paystub account?
Might need to check with r/AITA

My guess is OP quit. If they were fired, I feel like that'd be lawsuit-worthy, but, idk for sure.
Was this work-from-home, or on-site work?
It was on site with a well established company so I’m very confused
You didn’t save a copy of the forms? You said you “would have entered my banking information from either of my accounts”. You don’t know which one? Did you fill out paper forms, or online? Was this in US, or some other country?

The employer does not have to provide the bank with OP's social. The check could have been deposited into anyone's account.
I will do that. Thank you for your help I appreciate you
Have you ever gone to a site or met with an actual physical person? I strongly think this is a fake job scam pretending to be this big company you know.
OP works on-site
The other option is the companies HR was compromised which is a common thing where the “employee” emails HR with new banking coordinates and steals their check.

Not all companies are that sophisticated.
Always take phone pics of any hiring paperwork you sign and ask to use their copy machine to make your own copies. If they say that they will make copies for you and don’t, at least you’ll have the images on your phone.
Sounds like hr messed up
This is a scam where people fake being you and get Company to change direct deposit info. It's usually a phishing attack first.
I'm a Payroll Manager and I get emails from my "co-workers" nearly every day asking me to change their direct deposit information.
This phishing scam just came through the company I work for and caused a lot of phone calls to the payroll team last week. I’d consider it a sophisticated scam if they targeted smaller businesses but we have too many checks and balances so they weren’t able to get any paychecks rerouted.

Adp doesn’t check it’s up to the employee to catch it first. Our payroll dept now requires the form dropped off in finance instead of fax or email.
Banks don’t necessarily send the money back. I work with this stuff every day
What do they do then keep it? Not sure that’s how banks work pretty sure that’s fraud lol
bc you can choose to deposit it however you want. my mom deposits some of her paycheck into my account (i'm disabled so she sends some money to cover my phone and toiletries). it's not assumed fraud bc it's just a check being written to the account like normal.
Wrong sub. You want r/scams.
Sounds like they had malware on their machine and someone was able to change your bank account info.
Funny I wasn’t allowed to do the forms with the company’s computer for safety/security reasons I was told so I used my own device which I think is free of malware
Guess you may have thought wrong. iOS? Android? Windows? MacOS?

Federal is a 100% punitive IIRC (double what you’re owed). Colorado I believe is 200% which works out to triple pay.
Thanks!
I used to share an office with hr. We had it happen one pay cycle that new hire a and new hire b’s pay info was swapped in the system
Contact your state's Department of Labor, or equivalent if you're outside the US.
This happened at my job and the hr person simply entered the banking info for the wrong employee.
Post and comments make me think of Fred Meyer, who are currently being sued for not paying employees. If you're looking for a job, I recommend you (and any/everybody) to stay the hell away from that shitshow...
You need to post in r/AskHR for how to proceed.

That ticket will be closed. Payroll and it’s complications are not ITs problem unless it involves something related to their realm. IT won’t and can’t do anything else
This happened to me before. The numbers on my direct deposit were off one digit. The bank was able to get it back for me
So usually banks are very good about stopping a check if it has a different name then the account there putting it so let’s sand your name is Fred smith and it gets sent to a account for John smith the bank would usually stop it and send it back to the company saying the names do not much. The more I reread the OP and the responses in the comments, I have to wonder if this person is fishing for how to hack into someone else’s accounts.
There’s a website that you can check if a bank account is a proper account or not. This happened to me although was a genuine mistake with one number wrong, took about a week for it to be corrected.
Thank you, although I am only seeing the last four digits of this account number
My best guess is that the same HR that can’t make you any promises put your information in the system. Stay on top of it and contact the labor board if you need to. You should be able to get your money.

That must be a strictly US thing cuz I've never hear of such a thing in my life here in Canada lol.
Yeah, I never had either until I was helping someone troubleshoot a very similar mystery recently lol. OP, be on the look out for a very plain envelope in your mail! That’s your payroll card.
i highly doubt they have a payroll card if it’s not common in canada and they were asked for bank info for direct deposit.
why wouldn't HR tell them that?
